Came across Golden Wok by pure accident. Just wanted some Chinese food and this was close by. The place was nice, calm and it was pretty empty for an evening. Staff was friendly and not hovering, which I liked. They let me enjoy my food and only checked in when I needed something. I ordered the Beef lo mein. And yeah, beef lo mein is one of those dishes that usually tastes the same everywhere. The beef has that familiar Chinese beef flavor that i'm used to, tender, juicy, a little smoky, and piping hot. No toughness, no weird chew. Seasoning was on point. Portions overall were solid. The only thing I always forget until I'm halfway through is there's just not enough beef. This was our go-to Chinese place for decades. Birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Days were always occasions to go there or order in. It has changed hands now and is not at all the same. My husband phoned in our order to a young man who could barely communicate. When he got home with the food, the order was completely wrong. He called the restaurant, and spoke to that same man. First off, I was upset I waited over an hour for my order on a weekday. But the quality is very subpar for the price. Case in point as other Yelpers have posted, their "chicken" entrees (for nearly $20) are nothing more than fried dough balls with a slight hint of chicken flavor. Their audastic description on the menu leads you to believe it's a chicken meatball but I doubt there's any actual chicken per my pics and experience eating that crap. I definitely believe a previous poster about their health code violations, never again! I'll drive further for at least standard quality from now on. The food is tasteless! The Chicken Pad Thai was swimming in sauce that tasted like it was made from ketchup and lemon. There was even a sliced lemon on top. It was the worst Pad Thai I've ever eaten. We owned the building nextdoor and we enjoyed many meals here, until I spoke with inspector. They have had many issues with bugs and rodents, not for us anymore. Our food was always good and I never had any issues with service. I mostly stuck with standard American Chinese foods, like egg rolls, fried rice, beef broccoli, etc. Never had a bad meal. What I got was noodles with ketchup on them horrible. The noodles were soggy. There was not a sprig of cilantro, and any peanut flavor was overwhelmed by the tomato sauce flavor. Golden Wok has been a staple of Brookfield/LaGrange for years. Due to COVID and my husbands and my desire to support local establishments, we decided to try Golden Wok again. Their portions are huge. Their food is very tasty. We ordered Beef egg foo yong, eggrolls and I ordered a side of chow fun noodles. Their prices are absolutely fair, delivery was lightning fast and the food came hot. One of my idiosyncrasies is that I cannot stand cold food. However, Golden woks food came still steaming from the kitchen. Golden wok also has lunch and dinner specials which are very reasonable and which I will try very shortly because we intend to order from Golden wok frequently. RUDE! I walked into THEIR ESTABLISHMENT and spoke to them twice. TWICE! When I said "Hello." The person behind the counter did not say anything. I say "Hello" again, the person behind the counter doesn't say anything, he just looks then he asks, "Are you here for a pickup?" There's nothing signifying I'm there to do food delivery. There's another woman standing behind the counter laughing at our exchange and I didn't think any of it was funny. Then, he repeats himself, "Are you here for a pickup?" I reply, "No, I'm waiting for you to say 'Hello' to me." Then the woman chimes in, "We don't have to say 'Hello' to you." At this point, I say "Thanks." and I leave. There was another gentlemen walking out as this ordeal was going on, he just happened to white, who was standing outside waiting for me, I guess he wanted to know what occurred. When I tell him, he says that they said "Hello" to him when he walked in. Now, I wonder why they didn't say hello to me. None of this was funny to me. This restaurant shouldn't assume that if you're black you're just coming to do food delivery. They should treat every person who comes in as a potential customer, because how would they know. Would be great if they could bring it back, because the buffet used to be very good and convenient-- the food was fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced, plus the staff was so friendly. This past year I went for lunch, found out the dining room was closed, and saw the plastic sheets all around,. Still, I ordered take out thinking that the kitchen would still be good. Oops. Like others commented, dishes that were supposed to be chicken turned out to be chicken nuggets-- breading with sticky sauce. The fried rice and soup tasted like stale cigarettes. I want Golden Wok to succeed, especially during crazy times such as these. Veggie chow foon and veggie fried rice elicited a stop for Golden Wok. I'm not typically a Chinese food lover, and this was no exception. The food we had was decent, but for $11.95 I would expect more food for the Veggie Chow Foon. It was definitely lacking. The veggie fried rice was delicious, though! Yet, I do wish ther were more veggies and green onions. I had asked about green onions upon ordering, she assured me there were plenty. Nope, only white. I will still recommend Golden Wok, albeit even a weird experience upon paying. This is a local establishment and I will continue to support those establishments, especially now. read more

Hands down the beef and broccoli and chow foon were awesome. I would go back for that. The curry rice sticks were a little too sweet for my liking. My kids didn't care for their pan fried dumplings, preferring moy goy's to theirs. I liked them fine. They didn't like the dough, thought it was too thick and chewy. The chow foon was amazing. They put the fried noodles on top of the beef and broccoli mixture. I would totally come back for that. The fried rice was not good. They had diced chicken pieces that were so dry. I recently moved back to the area and started ordering from my old favorite, Golden Wok, and it is still the same great place! I always get the shrimp toast, teriyaki beef and Mongolian beef. The other dish I always get, bit is not pictured, is Mui's Special. The prices may be a bit higher than Chinese restaurants but their food is very fresh and well made. Very disappointed they would not honor my Entertainment coupon. I understand times/businesses are struggling now but then don't offer the coupon and not honor it. I WAS a regular customer to this restaurant but after today I'm done. When I called to complain the manager would not even talk to me. He told the woman answering the phone to just tell me we don't honor those coupons anymore. I don't come here too often because I've always found the food to be just average. Often I visit with a group from work or some friends. And of those visits, most have been for the lunch buffet. This visit with just one friend and we ordered from the menu and I fear that was my last visit. First we asked for an order of crab Rangoon. Typical artificial crab onion cream cheese filling but these were over fried and heavy with oil. Possibly the worst version of crab Rangoon I've ever eaten, and I've tried it hundreds of places across the US and Canada. The egg drop soup I had was fairly good. Very traditional preparation and ingredients and not too much corn starch as some restaurants can over do. The main dishes we had were BBQ pork egg foo young and General Tso's chicken. The BBQ pork egg foo young had an average flavor. It could have also been warmer. After a few bites in to the patties I discovered a large shrimp. I'm not allergic but my friend is and this could have been a tragic meal. The chicken was lightly breaded and flavorful but after taking the leftovers home it reheated poorly and was much too dry. Service was OK. While the waiter was surly because there was an upset table of four or five customers on the other side of the restaurant in the south room. The problem was over the buffet but we couldn't hear exact details. As usual, the woman at the desk where you pay the check didn't say anything but the price written on the paper slip. read more

Yum - decided to try Golden Wok again for NY eve family dinner. Take out order was spot in and the Mongolian beef with chow foon wide crispy noodles was outstanding. Veggie egg foo young was chocked full of fresh veggies and very tasty. Singapore noodles with shrimp had plenty of big fresh shrimp with just the right amount of wok char. Whole family was delighted.
