"Go in, the food's amazing!", said a stranger coming out of Tavern as we stood outside debating where to go for dinner. Luck was on our side, we managed to snag a table on a busy Saturday night. We got the Tavern Pig Nut Skillet to share and I split the braised pork belly poutine and duck lettuce wraps with a friend. That skillet. A pork trifecta is how I would describe it. A pork meatball mixed with pork belly wrapped in bacon and then baked in a maple BBQ glaze. Ummm, can they please make this into some sort of sandwich?! The smokey flavoring for the duck was perfect, although there didn't seem to be enough of it filling the lettuce wrap which was a bit disappointing. We saw Tavern 1883s menu on the side of a building outside and thought it sounded good. Upon reading Yelp reviews and how good it was we figured it was a good idea to get our name on the list. We called and it was no problem and we were thankful we did! We watched so many people turn and leave due to the long wait. I split the bison burger and gnocchi with my friend and I was a little bit sad to pass my gnocchi over because it was drool-worthy. However, when she passed me the bison burger I felt much betted based on how delicious it was! Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful -happy to answer any questions! Tavern 1883 is one of the few restaurants that remain open late. The interior has quite a rustic feel to it. There's plenty of street parking nearby. After a long day's hike at Lake Louise, I was quite hungry so I ordered the tavern classic burger and fries. The wait for the food was quite long, probably on the order of 30-40 minutes. This isn't the place to go if you're in a hurry. The burger was just okay. It had a distinct texture. Compared to other burgers I've had, this one broke apart easily while I was eating it. They were very busy the night we came since it was basketball playoff and hockey night, but we go lucky that there was one last table of two open when we arrived before the family dinner rush came in. They also have a patio you can sit at when it gets warmer (it was still winter when we went Memorial day weekend 2019) so nobody sat outside. They also have an amazing view just by being in downtown Canmore because they're surrounded by snowcapped Rockies. We walked in and the hostess was very friendly and sat us down promptly. Although I will say getting the waitress to get our order did take awhile though. We ordered their Tavern burger (I asked for lettuce wrap), gnocchi, and fried brussels sprouts. Their brussels sprouts was surprisingly delicious (I am NOT a fan of brussels sprouts LOL). It wasn't as bitter as I thought it was going to be and the seasoning they used on the outside complemented it very well. As for the burger, the Alberta beef used in it was AMAZING. I've been trying to figure a method to describe the meat texture, it's definitely different from American beef. I just don't exactly know how except that it's very tasty! Unfortunately, the boyfriend did not like his gnocchi because the dough to potato ratio was really off (too much dough) and wasn't to his liking. Tavern 1883 was our first stop in Canmore & it certainly made a great first impression! From the cozy atmosphere, amazing food & friendly staff - we instantly felt welcomed & excited to explore more. My partner got the Tavern burger & was recommended the truffle oil parm fries to try & we are so glad because they were a favourite! The shaved Parmesan was delicious and more than a step above the powdered parm that is typical at restaurants. This is the real deal! Fresh, high quality food. I'll admit, I snuck more than a few off their plate. They also raved about the burger for the rest of the trip, the flavourful, juiciness was certainly memorable. I got the truffle oil smoked Montreal meat poutine & it was incredible, the cheese curds were nice & squeaky, topped with fresh gravy - the highest of Canadian poutine standards :) The menu takes food everyone enjoys, such as burgers and poutine, and elevates it with interesting ingredients that take it from soul food to fine dining! There are even fun events like open mic nights, unfortunately we had to leave before we could check those out but they are definitely a must for the next time we visit Canmore. This was probably one of the bottom 3 places we went to in our week-long trip in Canada - the service was slow, all the other customers seemed agitated by the service and food, and the meals we got were just a little bit lackluster. Perhaps it was our own fault that we ordered salads when everyone else was getting burgers and other more traditional bar food, but at least we got our food in 15-20 min while other patrons were waiting 45 min or so for their food to come out. The kitchen seemed slammed with so many people on a warm summer day, filled with tourists, so they probably just didn't have enough kitchen staff or servers, so just beware and don't come here if it's crowded and you're in a hurry or hangry. Spinach and Avocado Salad ($13.83) - This was pretty basic and I could have made this at home by myself. There wasn't much to this except spinach, pecans, dried cranberries, 1/3 of an avocado and a bacon vinaigrette dressing. At least the spinach was not wilted in the salad and the dressing was really good, but there was nothing too special about this. Roasted Vegetable Salad ($14.83) - The raspberry vinaigrette didn't really seem to go along with the ingredients in the salad, so I'd request one of the other dressings and get it on the side. My fiancé got this salad and the salad was swimming in dressing. I don't think he liked this salad too much. We got chicken on top (+$4.83) and it was a weird rubbery texture. The beer we ordered was just so-so, and overall I would not come back here or recommend it. The salads came out pretty quickly as there's basically no cooking involved, but we could have made better salads at home. In fact after we are here we felt compelled to go to Safeway and buy groceries to make salads and food for the next 2 nights. This place is not super cheap, needs to step up the their food game a little, and hire more servers and kitchen staff when the summer months get busy. read more

Decided to check this place out. While the Beer was good.. it was super crowded (only God Knows why) with marginal food and even worse service... and I mean as dumb a box of rocks.. Post hike/bike/snowboard beer/caesars! It's an activity and ritual more important than the reason I went to the mountains in the first place! Whenever I'm in Canmore, there's a fantastic chance it's for this reason. As you can probably tell from the epic Caeser photo below, Tavern 1883 has everything I was looking for. Shy of celery, the Tavern 1883 Caesars comes with every possible Caesar garnish you could ever need. Pickle, pickled onion, olive, beef jerky (hopefully from Alberta) and a chunk of cheese - it's like a mini antipasto platter on a stick with every drink! Then, give me an option of regular or Spicy Sriracha vodka and I'm a happy camper... er, hiker. The place is casual with a bit of class. You could come here showered and respectable, but you also wont feel like the world biggest dirt bag if you show up after a day on the mountains. Lots of natural wood, exposed lightbulbs, and wildlife photography, give this restaurant that super popular rustic Calgary beer hall feel with artwork that is unmistakably Canmore. If the weather is in your favour, the patio is large and across from the "friendship park" so it's an attractive place to hang out. Well, that and it's in the middle of Canmore with is surrounded by the most incredible mountain views of you life, so... The food is "gastropub" - higher end reworking of the classic pub fares with trendy ingredients like lamb, elk, duck and truffles. I got some deep fried pickles and banana peppers to much on. Yup, the banana peppers are deep fried too. They taste kind of like little zesty onion rings. Very enjoyable. Both the pickles and peppers are heavily battered as opposed to the breaded pickles you'll find around Calgary. Still a fun, fried way to eat a pickle but I personally like the crispy breaded kind a little better. Considering the trendy, above average and adventurous kitchen ingredients, I would have liked to have seen a little more of an adventurous selection of beers on tap. It's all the standard Alexander Keiths, Shock Top etc. This is ok, I was just a little surprised given the forward thinking menu. Give me Tavern 1883's food with Iron Goat's beer list and I'd be in post mountain adventure bliss! This place piqued my interest. Another wonderful visit to Tavern. The poutine never disappoints, nor does the beer selection. I had the gnocchi and added shrimp which was delicious - shrimp was perfect & not rubbery like you end up with at so many places. My husband had the butternut squash & pumpkin seed salad & loved it. He says we are going back for it again before we leave town. Service was perfect, friendly & always there when needed. Tables can be a bit close in there but we made friends with the 2 young men who had skied Sunshine in a competition earlier in the day. I consider myself to have a very picky palate as I grew up in a food cultured area, and Tavern 1883 definitely met my expectations for good quality food. The lamb shank is cooked sous vide, and literally melted off of the bone. The cheesecake is good. Not something I'd order again, but decent. It is very pretty though. After doing some shopping in Canmore, my friend and I stopped here for a late lunch. The place looked cute and rustic on the inside. I grew up in Canmore but have been living in the States for 3 years. Came home excited to try the Tavern, hadn't been inside since it was Zonas. Unfortunately our experience was seriously lacklustre. We ordered fried jalapeños and pickles for a starter, and the kids quesadilla and chicken tenders in hopes that they would come out before our mains, but when our entrees came and we asked about the starter and kids meals, our waiter ran back to the kitchen and said they were just finishing up the fries. When the kids food came out 5 minutes later, the fries had definitely not just been made, and everything else was piping hot like they had rushed to make it, because it had been forgotten. My friend and I both ordered the chickpea and kale curry on rice, and found it was hot in some spots and cold in others. Rice was hard and obviously right out of the container it was stored in, peppers right out of the jar, lacking any hint of curry flavour with rubbery, tasteless chicken. Our waiter didn't check on us at any point in time to ask how we were doing, we didn't really have the opportunity to express our disappointment because he really didn't seem to care whatsoever, and didn't ask. Last week we did a week trip to Canmore and out of the 4 nights we were there we came here twice. Both times we had to wait for a table but it is well worth it ( especially since they had heaters on the patio while you waited ). The service here was very pleasant and consistent considering how busy they were both evenings. Our first night there was on a Wednesday that ended up being trivia night and it was fantastic! The food was great and the drinks were delicious and the host of the trivia night was amazing. I order the popcorn chicken and waffles both nights as it was perfection and had the cocktail called The Shaft. Both nights were incredible and I look forward to returning. This was a cute place with nice outside dining. Our server was friendly yet did not have much knowledge of menu, which later to find out she was new after she messed up my husbands order. His burger was okay, although not cooked as told it still had good flavor. My fish and chips (which I requested to make poutine) was good! Crunchy outside with moist flaky inside. As an avid lover of brussels sprouts I feel like I tried every variation. Yesterday when stopping by Tavern 1883 on our way home we ordered them as an appetizer. Holy cow were they some of the most incredible brussels sprouts I've ever had! As long as you're not a vegetarian or vegan, getting these is an absolute must! I got the avocado and wild rice salad as my main meal and added chicken to it. The chicken was so amazing. It seemed slow cooked and just fell apart and was so juicy. Next time I am passing through Canmore I will be stopping back into the city purely to order a bunch more brussels sprouts and try some more food! read more

Decent bar with reasonable food. We arrived for dinner on a warm day. There was a lot of outdoor seating and sliding doors open to the outdoors. We received our drinks and food quickly. We had chipotle chicken tacos with a bowl of soup du hour (split pea w ham), Cajun chicken tacos with sweet potato fries and Montreal sandwich with Caesar salad. The soup wasn't the typical green; instead it was orange in hue but still good. Tacos were large with plenty of garnishes but only two tacos. The Montreal sandwich was ok; we've had better. The chicken sandwich didn't have a Cajun flavor but the fillet tasted freshly grilled. The bun was soft and fresh but disintegrated while eating. The sweet potato fries were crispy. Very happy to be back at the Tavern. It's a go to spot for us and we love the "at home" feel. The drinks are always great and we never leave feeling hungry with the food being amazing every time. Big shout out to Chris. He was our server tonight and has severed us in the past a few times as well. He is one of those people that always has us coming back and wanting to make the trip to Canmore,B-lining for this place with no questions asked. Absolutely fantastic!!!!! Service couldn't have been better. Food was some of the best we have ever had. We got the crab and sweet potato dip to start. The blend of flavors was perfect; as well as the perfect amount of bread for the amount of dip. We were impressed already. For the main, I got the shrimp tacos with truffle parmesan fries. I have a tomato allergy, and was very surprised when the waitress informed me I could still get the guacamole! If you like truffle at all; the truffle fries are an absolute must!!!!!!! On top of fantastic flavor combo, the parmesan is layered throughout the fries, not just on top of them! If possible, we were even more impressed. My other half got the lamb burger. This was also on point I am told (came with a tomato on it, so I couldn't taste). Sweet potato fries were nice a fat, with excellent crisp. Sauce was tangy but not too sweet. Tavern 1883 has a great patio for apres skiing, hiking, etc. and it's one sweet spot in Canmore that doesn't charge tourist prices. My sweet potato fries alongside infused mayo were heavenly, and their fresh squash salad is a hit. The service is snappy and caring (definitely doesn't suffer from summer tourist burnout) and I love that it's a little off the beaten track so the patio experience isn't packed and loud. Spent a couple of days in Canmore and was very interested in trying some local flavour. Tavern 1883 seemed to have a good reputation but I found the quality of the food to be quite poor. I had a lamb burger accompanied by an order of poutine. The 'burger" was essentially a patty of ground lamb that appeared to come out of a freezer and grilled in a way that produced a hard crust. The meat was not juicy and appeared to not have any spices leading to a tasteless mass. In addition, the bun was stale. For almost $20 for the burger alone I expected much higher quality. The poutine was not much better, soggy and lacking flavour. However, the server was very friendly and attentive so no problems there. read more

The location first and foremost is in a great place. It is right in the center of town and like most places in the area, it has a great view of the mountains if you are outside. I had the pork belly poutine and it was rich, heavy, fatty, and DELICIOUS! Everything you would want out of a poutine. The portion was huge and I struggled to even eat half of it.
