This was my first visit to the East Greenwich location, although I've been to other Tavern in the Square restaurants and have always had great experiences. We stopped in on a very busy Friday night but were pleasantly surprised to be seated quickly in the bar area, which is my preferred spot anyway. The manager who greeted and seated us was genuinely friendly, setting the tone for a great evening. Our servers were equally wonderful and took the time to answer all of my questions about the gluten-free menu. I was especially excited to learn they have a dedicated gluten-free fryer, which is always a huge plus for those with food sensitivities. We started with a couple of summer spritz cocktails. They were light, refreshing, and perfect for a warm evening. I ordered their take on a Hugo Spritz and really enjoyed it. My boyfriend chose the Limoncello Spritz. It wasn't quite my style, but it was still well made and delicious. For dinner, we both ordered the steak tips with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes. The steak tips were cooked perfectly, the mashed potatoes were incredibly flavorful, and everything on the plate was delicious. It was one of those meals where you're tempted to lick the plate clean. Between the friendly service, gluten-free accommodations, and excellent food, this was an easy five-star experience. I've been a few times, usually out of convenience, and leave pleased with my meal each time. Today my colleague and I went for lunch and we both had the Sweet and Spicy Thai Salad. It was really delicious. It was as described - it was sweet with a nice kick. The wonton crisps were tasty and brought some nice texture to the dish. The salad was dressed very well, too. The server was friendly but soft spoken. It was a bit hard to hear her as it was on the louder side in the restaurant. But it was open and airy - no crowded feeling. Ordered delivery and received a completely unsealed order, no tamper-evident stickers on the containers or the bag, which was left wide open. When I called, I was initially asked, "Has it been tampered with?"but that's exactly the issue:, without any seal, there's no way to know. she also said that she's never received an order where it has been sealed. I was then transferred to a manager who hadn't been briefed, so I had to explain everything again. During the conversation, the manager compared this experience to buying groceries and when I responded "no it's not" he said "well the fruit isn't sealed. While the manager acknowledged my concern was valid and said he would raise it in an operations meeting, no resolution was offered in the moment, and I was left having to decide whether to take the risk and feed the food to my kids. The food itself appeared fine, but this is a basic delivery safety expectation at this point. Most restaurants, large chains and local spots both use some form of sealing. Not having it, combined with the lack of a clear response, made for a frustrating experience. Won't order from here again until they change their policy! read more

A solid family friendly spot on the EG border. Their sour cream and onion dip is pretty tasty and a great way to kick off the meal. My son who does have a discerning palate when it comes to chicken tenders and fries really enjoys them here. The salad was solid and definitely overflowing. Tavern in the Square has many great areas in which to dine. We were in a booth that was as requested - warm and lovely !!! Comfort is important when having a meal. We adore the Bang, Bang tempura broccoli and asked for it to be served without the spicy topping but substituted blue cheese dressing. Then, we totally enjoyed the new rib eye grilled cheese sandwich plate served along with delicious sweet potato fries. That is a hand-held sandwich that should be added to the regular menu! FOOD: Steakhouse Burger was very good, as was the Creamy Burrata, Chicken Avocado Club was also good but the Brioche bread was way too large making it hard to finish. Unfortunately, some of our food was a bit on the "Salty" side. Good selection of beers with a few good locals. Went for an early dinner on a Friday and it was busy but we were seated quickly. Server was friendly! I ordered the fish tacos and they were very good! Everyone else at the table either got the chicken avocado club or Korean crispy chicken and they all liked their dishes. I frequent Tavern in the Square before or after seeing a movie across the street at Showcase Cinemas. They may be a bit on the pricey side, but the have a great bar area with tables that are "first come, first serve". The bartenders are very nice and helpful. I have tried most things on the food menu, with my favorite being the sirloin tips. They come with mashed potatoes and broccoli. They are always cooked like I like them . They also have a good selection of apps and a couple of flatbread options which are very good as well. All in all, I am always happy that I stopped in! read more

They have their water service, where they place a personalized water bottle on the table for us to help ourselves...I like that....no need to flag a server for a drink of water. BLOWN AWAY. Came here with a group of 12.. 8 children and 4 adults.. (we did have a reservation) I was surprised at how many people were here at 430pm on a Saturday .. the layout is open, they have an indoor/ patio, bar was huge, place looked great.. the hostess , waitress and other girls at the front were very sweet and accommodating throughout our time here - we all started with some appetizers (pretzels and two orders of nachos) all were torn apart before I could snap a picture. Meals for the kids were perfectly portioned, they devoured everything.. chicken tenders, burger, steak tips.. between us adults.. along with the apps, we had salad, few handhelds/sandwiches .. we were all very satisfied but I do have to point out my Korean crispy chicken sandwich-- I don't think I even spoke during this time because I was just stuffing my face lol it was so good that I'm actually going back this week with some work friends because I want more !!! This location gets very busy and we were lucky to get a bar spot. The bar is very big and the seats are very close to each other. The staff at the bar were all friendly and attentive. There were four different bartenders on this particular Monday night and they all rotate to all the guests so you don't have just one bartender. Seems like it is a well managed establishment. The bang bang broccoli was delicious. A big portion of fried broccoli with an Asian twist, it came out hot and spicy! The bartender recommended trying it with a dressing so we tried the ranch, which was I also ordered the Bayou Chicken Pasta. This was also a delicious dish. Perfect blend of spicy, butter, bacon bits, and cheese. The dish said it had jalapeno in it, but the pepper tasted like poblano, which was probably better than the jalapeno. The kitchen split the dish for us and we only ate half because it was so filling. Overall, we had a great experience. I would give a 5 if the prices were better. read more

Tavern in the Square has become my favorite dinner spot in Rhode Island for gluten free food! They have so many gluten free options which I absolutely love. The vibes are great with lots of seating inside, near the bar and outside in the covered patio area. I typically haven't had to wait when I go but it can get busy. On my last visit, I ordered the Fried Pickle Chips (which are gluten free) and the BBQ Chicken Pizza (subbed with a gluten free cauliflower crust). Both were amazing and were the perfect meal. First off - great service! Even on a Friday at 6:30, our server was quick and attentive. We love the look of the inside and how it can convert to indoor/outdoor dining. Tons of beers on tap (a little pricey for a place off Main Street EG) but lots to choose from. Neat cocktail and spiked seltzer menu. We have been a few times and this time we got bbq chicken pizza - soft doughy crust. Definitely large enough for one persons full meal or even possibly two people who are ordering a salad to split as well. Great homemade ranch. What dinged a star is the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. This was a huge sandwich, nice piece of chicken, nice bun...but this is like an Asian Zing Chicken sandwich. Not Nashville flavors at all. About a month ago my husband and I were visiting Rhode Island for a weekend getaway from Connecticut, and for our first dinner in RI, we decided to go with a familiar and comforting choice--Tavern in the Square. We've been to the Connecticut location and always loved the food, so we were excited to try the East Greenwich spot. To start, we ordered the guacamole and chips--delicious as always. For dinner, my husband went with the steak tips, and I ordered my favorite: the Bayou Chicken Pasta. I had requested no bacon in my dish due to religious dietary restrictions, and our server (whose name I didn't catch, but he had dark curly hair and was incredibly kind and professional) made sure to note it. While waiting for our food, I admired how many appetizing dishes were coming out of the kitchen--everything looked great! Our server checked on us a few times, and during the meal, the manager, Kayla, stopped by to introduce herself. She was warm, attentive, and clearly keeping a close eye on the dining room to ensure everything was running smoothly. Unfortunately, when my dish arrived, I noticed it had bacon in it. I immediately stopped eating. We let our server know, and he was very apologetic, explaining that it must've been a kitchen mistake. He offered to have the dish remade, but by then, I had lost my appetite. Kayla came over shortly after to apologize personally and offered both a new entrée and a dessert, which I politely declined since I was already full. I appreciated their efforts to make things right. The restaurant took my dish off the bill, which was generous and appreciated. But what really stood out was Kayla returning one last time before we left--with a $25 gift card as a sincere apology. That gesture meant a lot. It showed they genuinely cared about the guest experience and wanted to go above and beyond. This Tavern in the Square location is clean, welcoming, and staffed with genuinely wonderful people. While mistakes happen, it's how a team handles those moments that sets them apart--and this team did just that. To the owner: Kayla and our server deserve recognition (and honestly, a raise!). You should be proud to have such dedicated and customer-focused staff. We've been to many restaurants, but this visit is one we'll remember for all the right reasons. read more

Huge, spacious place...big bar! Sad to say that our food sucked. Ordered crispy sweet potato pakora and it was basically burnt. They were too burnt that I was afraid to chip my teeth. The General Tso's chicken were SO dry. The truffle cappellacci did not taste like truffle at all. It was just saucy, soggy raviolis...like soupish. Service was wonderful though. We have dined at the location at Garden City and when this one opened we wanted to give it a try. We started (again) with the Bang Bang Broccoli from the 'small bites' section of the menu. This is a sweet/tangy tempura battered broccoli appetizer that is quite tasty but can be a bit greasy in the stomach. You get a good serving of broccoli in this dish. Definitely enough for 3 or more people. We always take some home. I opted for a Cesare salad topped with tenderloin for my meal this visit. They have a few protein options if you are looking to make it a meal, as well as plant based cheese if you are dairy free. The lettuce was very fresh and the steak has a sweet marinade and was tender. The salad was very lightly dressed, which for me is perfect. My SO ordered the Picante burger, which for him was not at all spicy. He really likes it hot. It was a very 'messy' burger as the juices ran into his plate as he ate. He ended up eating over his appetizer dish to save his fries. The fries are the smaller variety (not shoe string, not steak fries) and were good while warm. There is a wooden dowel pushed down through the burger to hold it together during delivery, and it was pushed so far down into the burger it wasn't visible. When he picked up the burger he hurt his hand on this wooden skewer as he squeezed the burger. He had to find it and fish it out. Maybe a little flag to stop it from going all the way through would be a nice courtesy to the guest. There were a couple other minor negatives during our visit. First, we didn't see much of our waiter. He was very personable, but after he took our drink and food order we didn't see him until after our meals were delivered. I think this is common, but when my salad arrived, I did not have a steak knife and I had to ask the food runner to get me one. The waiter should have brought that to the table before the food arrived. Friendly is great. Attention to details is better. The other item is their iced tea. It's either one of those dispensers where they push water through a tea concentrate (which is common), or they are leaving the tea bags in the brewed tea too long. Either way, it was bitter. I added water from my water glass to dilute it a bit and that did make it more palatable. If they are using the concentrate perhaps the water to mix ratio is off. The building itself is a large, airy space with very high ceilings and a bit of outdoor seating plus TV's everywhere. There is a huge bar in the center of the room with booths and tables throughout the rest of the space. All the staff are young and hip with man buns and tattoos all 'round. The dress code is black and white. Parking is in a shared lot w/other businesses in the plaza. They do have a few reserved spaces for Curbside pick up close to the entrance. The food is the same as their other locations. The building is similar but somehow the Cranston location feels more friendly. Less uptight. Better service. Either way, it's a good casual spot for a quick bite and a beverage. Prices are reasonable. read more

We came to tavern in the square for dinner. The front desk was so kind and the drinks were great! But our server came over and was being short. We ordered waters and hadn't decided yet what cocktails we were going to get yet. Once she came over and we ordered drinks she instantly went to other waitresses and started clearly talking about us. We could hear her as well and when they noticed we were could hear and it was obvious she then turned and hid her mouth while talking about us still. This place has a really great open wall design. Makes for a great place to get shade with a fresh air, but it's also well ACed farther inside. The service is quick and the food comes out in a reasonable amount of time regardless of how busy it is. They have a large beer selection too. We got the bbq chicken pizza, and that was good. Minus a star because we also got the Nashville fried chicken sandwich, which was a some sweet asian hot sauce that was not part of the description at all. There was nothing on the menu that suggested this would be some sweet, spicy sauce. Otherwise great spot. read more

I've been here a few times and think that it's good. The food is good. The service has been spotty but overall ok. The openness of the restaurant and the style in both RI locations are what I think attracts people. The TVs that you can see from any seat helps that vibe. I think it's good for what it is, nothing great but good enough to keep people coming back. As a side note, on my last visit, I tried the pepper and watermelon dish. I tried it because this (to me) was ambitious. Nice dish. Should've had the peppers stemmed as it was kind of a pain to eat having to stem them myself. Tasty though. read more
