The food here always hits, and I highly recommend the happy hour to get some cheaper appetizers (because tbh some of the food can be a bit overpriced). Meet up with friends for Happy Hour to finalize our mini getaway and decided to come to the tavern in the square for happy hour. it's located near the west farms mall and a prime location to meetup. I've been here in the past and also the Shrewsbury Mass location. Love the restaurant as it's always a good visit. Here I was greeted by the staff and the restaurant was spacious, light music in background, easy to have a conversation, and they had a nice covered outdoor patio area as well. We sat outdoors as it was a beautiful evening and were able to order off the HH menu which was perfect. Our waitress was fabulous she checked in with us regularly and no complaints from our group. I ordered the talk tiki to me and it took you to Hawail, the flavors of the coconut rum and served in a ceramic tiki glass. First the bang bang broccoli!!! I must say this was AMAZING and a huge portion they give for only $5. This dish was very delicious and highly recommended. Wanted to come here a few weeks ago, but my dad said it was always too loud so we went elsewhere and kept this on the back burner. It was a Saturday night a few weeks before Christmas so we made a reservation. Barely any parking spots right outside the restaurant and it was very busy inside but plenty of seating, enough empty tables, and tons of wait staff so it was very quick. Yes it was loud, certainly for someone hard of hearing, but I'm not sure my wife and I would have noticed if my dad hadn't warned us. My wife and I decided to take the 30 minute drive as the menu looked delicious. Upon arrival we were promptly seated and the waiter took our drink order. Upon his return with the drinks we ordered the pretzel appetizer and birthday cake donuts along with a burger and a pasta dish. That was literally the last time we saw our waiter at our table. The food was brought out by a food runner and both the appetizers and entrees were delicious. If I could rate just on the food it would be 4-5 stars. However, our waiter clearly didn't want to be bothered even though he only had 3 tables (including ours). Never checked on, no refill of water, no offer for another drinks, no checking in to see how the food came out....literally ignored us even though he walked by multiple times. We finally flagged him down as he was walking by and asked for to-go boxes and the check. After waiting for approximately 20 minutes without his return, I finally approached the manager and asked for boxes and the check so we could go. The place felt casual but with lots of energy; it was packed but there were plenty of seating and we got in right away. It's a good place to bring your kids; we brought our two babies. For my meal, I had the Picante Burger; comes with crispy bacon, pepper jack cheese, pico de Gallo, and chipotle aoli. The burger was good but it was definitely not Picante (spicy). I was expecting it to be spicy but it was mild at best. The burger itself was ok, it was lacking in flavor and I most likely won't order that again. The fries were nice and crispy. A Thursday night at 6:30 (reservation obtained), the place was humming with diners and people at the bar. We were seated very quickly. Wait staff appeared at our table, asked if it was our first time? Yes, he said "no problem, I will take care of you and all your questions". "I will take your drink order and leave the menu and give you some to time to give it a looksy". A prosecco, diet coke and order of fried pickles. He left us with the menu, we figured out quickly what we wanted the Mac & cheese with chicken and the steak tips. The waiter delivered our drinks and appetizer. The pickles were awesome! As we enjoyed the pickles we looked around at the restaurant, interesting and different lighting fixtures, very modern industrial with lots of concrete. The wife said that the place needed more fabric in the place so it wouldn't be so "loud and echoey" The entrees came just as we were finishing up the pickles. Both were huge portions, the mac& cheese was really good, the chicken was nugget form so they were OK. The Cesar side salad was good. The steak tips were cooked perfectly; the mashed potatoes were good but maybe a little too whipped as they laid flat on the plate and the steam broccoli was nice and tender. Because the portions were too big, we asked for takeout boxes as we were saving room for dessert: salted caramel cookie with ice cream and the flourless chocolate cake. They arrived quickly and presentation was really nice; both were excellent and shared among us both. The waiter checked on us frequently but was not obtrusive, he was excellent, he answered questions, anticipated our needs. We will definitely go away. read more

I've been going back and forth on this review for a bit, and I've decided to settle in on 3 stars, here's why: We stopped into Tavern in the Square on a Saturday around lunch, honestly expecting to find it pretty busy because of their brunch menu. It was pretty quiet. The service was really friendly and attentive. Tavern in the Square advertises as allergen friendly, and the server we had really seemed to know about allergens. That being said.... Maybe only the marked allergens? We ordered the chicken finger appetizer, a side of Mac and cheese, and the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Everything was marked allergy, with a stick in the food. (Gluten free and tomato). However, I also made very clear I had a tomato allergy and the sandwich came out with ketchup in a cup on the plate. After sending it back, it came out a minute later, clearly just with the cup taken off. This isn't proper allergen handling. Our server came and asked if everything was okay after the food was served since the management delivers meals marked with allergens, and we told her, and she showed us all the tomato allergy markings. I'm sure she would have caught the ketchup before it even came out. Unfortunately, this begs a further question about their allergen preparation, and if they just replate things when they get the order wrong... I didn't eat off the replated Nashville chicken sandwich plate, but my husband said the tator tots were pretty good. The sandwich was more like a honey bbq than a hot chicken. The chicken tenders and the Mac n cheese were pretty good. Probably not a place I'd recommend if you have allergies, but great service and decent food if you don't! read more

Went twice in a week during my work trip to west Hartford. It was conveniently located in less than a mile from our hotel. The first time we went, it was with around 20 people. It was early in the week, so there weren't many other patrons. Yet, it took almost an hour to take our orders and two hours to get our food. Holy mackerel, we were starving by the time the food came out. The waiter was very apologetic but this really left a sour taste for us. dinners sitting down get tiring after a couple hours, especially when your drink and food orders don't come in a timely fashion. The food itself was very meh. I got the quinoa bowl both times I went bc I really didn't find anything else on there healthy enough. The first time was with salmon and that was rock hard. I barely ate a fifth of it. The second time was with chicken which was considerably better as a protein but the rest of the dish still fell short of flavor. The beets and brussel sprouts were soggy and overcooked. The service on our second visit was a lot better with just the four of us taking up a high top. The bar was crowded as a game was on and they seemed to be hosting some company dinner party on the side. I can't say the food was good enough but the drinks were fine and service was okay. It's real easy to overlook this place. I'm guilty of it myself. My friend wanted to try it out and I had never even heard of it - but I'm glad we did! The inside is huge. They have a ton of bar seating, booths, tables, and covered (also heated) outdoor patio as well. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were great. Helpful and honest they made ordering drinks and food a breeze. It was mostly a younger crowd so the energy was up, it was loud with conversation, and felt like a fun place to be. Beer selection was great. A lot of local stuff which I always enjoy. We got the tots for an app and they were really good. My friend also enjoyed his meal. But for me the highlight of the night was my chicken sandwich. I expected the typical hot chicken sandwich that everyone has these days but man was I wrong. The breading and flavor of the sauce was so so good!! And it was huge - I was only able to eat about half. I'm glad I wasn't able to finish it because I look forward to having the rest later I think this is a great place for a group of friends, to watch a game, or just hang out at the bar. A typical tavern menu is offered along with about forty different draught beers. I had the sirloin tips with blistered green beans and garlic mashed potatoes. Previous reviews had me hesitant for how it would be with toddlers and let me put your fears at ease that it was fine! Bring 'em! We were seated in a back booth and all fit easily. (Much preferred thank you! So the kids didn't bother anyone) Our server was super nice, friendly, and funny. All our food was delicious and good portion size. The kids mac and cheese was legit like a whole box. Food did take a little longer to come out than anticipated. We also had a question about one of the veggie bowl ingredients that we could not identify and 2 servers came over to check it out and joke about it, but honestly we wish they would've just asked the kitchen for the answer. Tavern is awesome due to the variety of gluten free options for my spouse. Our go-to is the delicious dilly taste fried pickles.
