Cute restaurant by a small canal with indoor and outdoor seating. Came here for dinner on our last night in Venice after having passed by it earlier in the day, and it was a quaint spot to eat. The food is tasty and the service was nice (albeit a tad slow, although it is Italy). Credit cards are accepted. You pay by credit card inside. It is good for bigger groups. We got bread to start (complimentary) and the baccala (creamed codfish) which was purported to be a local specialty. It came on top of polenta and was a light appetizer. I had the tagliatelle nere which was a super interesting pasta that I really enjoyed (it had pistachios and squid ink). The spaghetti alla busara was a red pasta and my sister enjoyed it. The squid ink pasta is another solid choice. My dad really enjoyed the Venetian style liver (fegata alla Veneziana) if you're looking for something heartier (it comes with polenta). We walked in and the waiter seemed a little put out that we had come in. He did not make recommendations or assist with educating on the dishes. The ravioli Neri, spaghetti alla vongle and pizza baffo was ordered. The pasta plates were extremely nice the pizza was okay. The pizza crust was fantastic and the ingredients were fresh. The flavor combination was okay but not impactful. Overall, there are plenty of other places we'll try before trying this location again when in Venice next to the San Marco church. read more

Taverna da Baffo is located in Campo Sant'Agostin, a lovely, quiet spot in Venice away from the main flux of tourists, not far from the Basilica dei Frari and Campo San Polo. We came over for lunch on a scorching summer day; we made a reservation, although it wasn't really necessarily as the vast majority of tables in Capo Sant'Agostin were actually empty. Taverna da Baffo serve some excellent pasta dishes: spaghetti alle vongole (clams), linguine allo scoglio, and gnocchi con capesante (scallops) were all excellent. Why the low rating, then? Unfortunately we had a lot of issues with the service. Service in Italy is rarely great, and I'm fine with that as the emphasis is on the food. However, this lunch became an excruciating wait to the point that we just wanted to be done with it and leave. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding with our server, or a misunderstanding between the server and the kitchen, but I thought that when we placed our order we told the server to bring all the food out together; the server, on the other hand, thought that we asked for the different dishes to be taken out at different times. The result was that the 3 pasta dishes came out first after about half an hour, and then we had to wait for a good 30 minutes before the pizza came out[1]; after that, another half hour for the frittura di pesce, which was served last. Apart from the odd order of the dishes[2], it really shouldn't take nearly 2 hours to complete a lunch that was basically a shared appetizer, a pizza, and 3 pasta dishes. I don't think the servers or the kitchen could have been overwhelmed, as there were maybe 1-2 more tables when we placed our order. Excellent hidden gem by a small, quiet canal with options of indoor vs outdoor dining. We basically wandered upon it during our exploration of the Venice night life. It was a beautiful evening so we opted for the outdoor seating and we were treated to fine service and fine food by Max. Max himself is worth the stop! The cuisine was varied, reasonably priced and high quality in taste. We even had a 15 minute violin serenade during our meal which made the experience even that much more pleasant. Our group of 4 couldn't have been more pleased with our evening meal and would absolutely return if ever given the opportunity. This would be a fine stop for anyone looking for an authentic meal in Venice. read more

The place: it is actually pretty; it honors its name like a tavern. A bit dark inside, you can see them preparing pizza as you walk to the back to go to the bathrooms. It's actually pretty cool. The food: it's ok. I ordered pasta all'amacitriana. I've had better. The pasta was cooked al dente, which is always great but the sauce, bacon wasn't the greatest. The portion is good for its price. It was 12€. One coworker had veggies and she described them as vey fresh and well seasoned. I wish I had pizza instead. The bruschetta was good. I'll give it another tried for the pizza. This place was recommended by a local; very good food. The BEST olive oil that I have ever tasted alongside soft, flavorful, and buoyant bread! Ordered black ravioli stuffed with cod; the cod was so smooth and rich, it tasted like a freshly made cheese. No traces of a fishy taste; sauce was deeply flavored with olives, fresh tomatoes. Waiter was kind enough to suggest wine pairing with our dishes. The tiramisu was OK - too sweet and lacked the coffee/rum undertones that the cake is known for. Rome had a much better take on tiramisu. Our host was accommodating and courteous; due to my shellfish allergy, the waiter offered to make the sea bass baked vs. grilled; that does not happen in local restaurants in Italy! We stumbled upon this place our first night in Venice. Amazingly fresh Bruschetta and best Panna Cotta I've ever had.

I dunno folks. Walked in here on 14 Jan at about 8:30pm on our way to San Marco Plazza. The staff - an older gentleman and a young man, were attentive throughout, hence the 4. The place then filled with a number of tables including locals. We ordered fried fuccocia (sp) / salami and a mixed cheese plate Both were good, though fried bread is fried bread. The olive oil and table bread was excellent. Ordered a wine - waiter suggested another that was very good (48E in UK; 65 in the restaurant, so normal mark up). We ordered two different pizzas; the puttanesca was not remarkable; the St Augustine looked great but wasn't very tasty. Walked another 10 mins and wished we had waited for the alley stands that abound. read more

We stopped by this restaurant at random, partly because it was getting late. After seating us, the staff said the kitchen was closing soon but we could still get an order in. That's where the experience started to spiral. The waiter came over and we could tell he was immediately irritated. His body language gave away more of his irritation, then any difference in languages could account for. We started the meal with some bruschetta. It was served on a flat bread that appeared more like pizza dough then crusty bread. Next our main courses. My wife had ordered ravioli and instead she was served fettuccine. Given the treatment from the waiter we decided not to say anything about the mix up, and just ate the fettuccine instead. The rest of the meal service continued poorly. The waiter failed to offer us any more drinks or check on us as we ate. The waiter did not offer us any cheese for our pasta dishes, and when I asked if he had any Parmesan cheese, he acted like I was putting him out. The waiter then proceeded to bring us a partially consumed bowl fo grated Parmesan. We were not the last customers in the restaurant, however the only other table appeared to be locals, or at least other Italians. The waiters demeanor towards them was much more accommodating. The were very much the young to our Yang. We finished our meal, paid, and left. I was so frustrated with our experience that I didn't see if the waiter had adjusted the bill accordingly. I have had some amazing service here in Italy. And I have had better Italian food in the United States. I expected better service. If the waiter didn't want to serve us then they should have simple told us the kitchen was closed and not seated us. I would have left and found another restaurant. I expected better service and food here in Venice. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

If you are looking for mediocre food and a very disinterested staff, then this is the place for you. This is my first post on yelp only because I'm compelled to tell others about my experience due to all the other fairly positive reviews here. I'm confident this was not just an off night, as all staff top to bottom were disinterested in taking care of any table. At least the outside ones I could see. At one point we ordered more wine, and the person who took the order (looked like the manager) walked away and had a cigarette with a woman in the corridor. We were forced to order from a random walking by. The food was not good. The pizza was the worst we have had on our 2 week trip. Our food came out with more than 20min between primo and second. At the end of our meal we waited for over 25min for the check, so I just walked into the main area and forced the issue with no one even asking one question or acting interested. Only positive is in the end it was inexpensive. I guess you get what you pay for ... Bottom line is, don't waste your precious time in Venice with an experience like I had. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences people wise I have had in Italy. I have been to Italy before and I know they are not as big of fans of credit cards as us Americans. Thus, before we sat down and ordered my group and I informed the waiter we would like separate checks so we could pay separately by card. The waiter assured us this was no problem and we continued with our meal. As for the meal it was decent. Not the best pasta I've ever had but good and for a decent price. Good sized portions as well. The real problem came with the staff. When we got the check it was just one, not four. We asked the waiter again to split it and he started doing math and making fun of us for not doing it ourselves, acting like we were stupid for not being able to do it ourselves. We went inside to pay with credit cards and the manager informed us it was not possible to pay separately with cards and started belittling us and saying how it was impossible and never happened. We informed him that the waiter had said it was ok and that was the only reason we had stayed at this restaurant. We were low on cash and so wanted to use credit cards. He continued to belittle us as well saying this was impossible. We paid in cash but one friend had to still pay with card as he didn't have enough cash. The manager then proceeded to say paying less that 30 euros by card in Italy never happens. A fact which is untrue as our group had done it successfully several times before by informing the waiter of our intentions. The manager then had a conversation with the waiter in front of us where the waiter denied he had said this was ok. Basically playing us off as stupid Americans. This was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in my entire life. I urge everyone to not frequent their establishment or at least be warned. The food is definitely not good enough to warrant this type of service. read more

Our waiter took it with my cash - two 50 Euro notes. It took a while, but when it came back the change was a 5 Euro note and two 2 Euro coins. I looked at it and then immediately looked across to the far end of the room, where the proprietor was standing next to the cash register watching me. The minute I looked up he reached in the cash register then headed my way, with another 10 Euro note. It looked to me like the son-of-a-bitch was ready to rip me off for an extra ten Euros if I behaved like his view of the typical American tourist and didn't notice the shortage. I didn't have to say a word to anyone - he knew exactly what he was doing. I'll never come back to this asshole's establishment. Then we stopped at another restaurant that had an hour wait. On our way back home we happened upon Taverna Da Baffo and it was exactly what we were looking for. It had a beautiful outdoor seating area on a small canal. The service was great and it had the dish my wife was searching for all over Venice - lobster pasta. I had the day's special, lamb ravioli.
