My husband and I were in Orlando for a convention and decided to have dinner at Taverna Opa because it was nearby. Unlike the venue in Hollywood, Florida, which is near our home, this one is larger and brighter and more spacious. The food is just as good and the atmosphere also is cheery and bright. We had the saganaki and the grilled octopus appetizers. Both were very good. Although we are used to cold, marinated octopus we thoroughly enjoyed this grilled version. For dinner, hubby had the lamb board and I had the slow-cooked lamb. Both were savory and satisfying, and we had enough leftovers for the next day's lunch. We were adventurous and tried the Galaktoboureko dessert, custard wrapped in honey phyllo. It was served warm, and it was sweet and creamy. Our server Rafael was very attentive. About the only problem we had was that the appetizers and entrees arrived at the same time. Say what? Nico, one of the managers, chatted with us before and told us he had worked at the Taverna Opa in Hollywood. After our meal, he stopped by to see if we liked this restaurant and even offered us a taste of mastiha, a Greek liqueur. Hubby doesn't drink, but I gladly accepted a shot (and really liked it). We had dinner around 6 pm and the entertainment was starting just as we were leaving a bit after 7 p.m. We couldn't stay longer because we had to catch a speaker. FIVE STARS - NO QUESTIONS, NO DOUBTS. Wow, I was literally blown away by Taverna Opa. This doesn't happen often, and especially not in this part of town in what I would consider a touristy area. We had a party of 6 and were seated outside at a nice, big table. We booked a reservation at the last minute and thankfully were able to snag one late in the evening. The server came over quickly and checked on us, explained the menu and his recommendations. We ordered a ton of food, a few drinks and a couple shots for a digestif. Everything was hot, flavorful, delicious, and exactly what we wanted. I don't think we had a bite of anything that was in any way disappointing. Major shoutout for the Pastitsio - it was one of the best we've ever had. This is my husband's favorite dish, and he was amazed at the flavor and the cook on the food. I will be back! read more

We went around 4pm on a Sunday and the restaurant was dead. We left around 7pm and the place was extremely busy. (Also keep in mind that dinner takes quite some time.) We chose to do the family style meal so we could try a little of everything. They start with warm pita bread, homemade hummus, and cold appetizers. There was also a big Greek salad. The dips were all absolutely delicious, especially with the pita bread, which was perfectly soft and had delicious spices on it. I loved the hummus the best. It was chunky and had lots of garlic in it. Different from any kind of hummus you buy in stores. Hot appetizers came out next. My three year old scarfed down the Greek meatballs. I had one bite and thought they had great flavor so I could understand why. There wasn't one thing on this plate either that I didn't like. Finally, the main entree of meats came out. Chicken, pork, and beef skewers and lamb chops. I enjoyed the appetizers more than the main meats, but I did find the lamb chops to be amazing. Since we were celebrating a birthday, at the end of the meal the waiters came out to sing. That's when it got really fun. We were all able to get up on the table and dance and at the end throw napkins and yell "Opa." It was so much fun. Came here for dinner while at a dance competition with a group of about 16, we were able to get a large table at 8:15PM on a Saturday so we were grateful. The place was on fire (not literally). Lol I can't even begin to tell you what others ordered on the other side of the table. I can just remember those immediately next to me. We ordered the Saganaki, which was perfectly flambéd (literally on fire this time) and delish! Our part of the table ordered lamb shanks, lamb chops and chicken kebabs; they seemed happy with their orders. I ordered the pork kebabs with feta fries. It was a huge portion (even had leftovers for lunch the next day) and had great flavor. As far as service, the waiter was pretty good, given our large size. The place was packed and the belly dancers came around to dance (on tables) and they really make an effort to get the guests engaged. It was very loud, so hard to have a conversation and the food took a while to come out, which is why I think the waiter brought out multiple mortars with their homemade hummus. We chose the family‑style meal, and it was a feast. The warm pita and fresh dips were a great start, followed with a Greek salad and a generous platter of hot appetizers. Honestly, most of us were already full after this. The main meat platter was just as delicious, with everything tasting fresh and well‑seasoned. Only one of the pork skewers (pork souvlaki) was undercooked from the main meat platter, but there was already a lot of food so we didn't gripe too much about it. Toward the end of our meal, the belly dancers came out and added a fun, engaging energy to the atmosphere, especially for anyone who hasn't seen that style of entertainment before. I had high hopes for Taverna Opa, but unfortunately, our visit fell short in several areas. I ordered the lamb chops medium rare. They arrived well done. My wife's Greek salad with salmon came out raw in the center. Things went downhill from there when the waiter who took our order was nowhere to be found; I eventually had to go inside from the patio to ask for assistance. After some effort, another staff member brought out the manager, who did step in to replace our meals and assign a different server. While I appreciate that gesture, both rounds of food took a long time, and by that point, the evening had already lost its rhythm. The replacement dishes were passable but nothing memorable and certainly not enough to redeem the delays and service issues. The final disappointment came with the bill. After everything, only a 10% discount was offered. I expressed my frustration, and the manager ultimately removed one of the entrees, but the gesture felt like too little, too late. Overall, this was not the experience I expected from such a well-known spot on International Drive. Between the kitchen missteps, long waits, and uneven service, it was a tough night. We came here for a celebration during Magical Dining and it did not disappoint. The service was excellent and our server was an absolute delight. Make a reservation because by 7pm the place was completely packed. For food I had the falafel which was just okay, the lamb chops which were very flavorful, and the Emek for dessert which I enjoyed although the texture might not be for everyone. The atmosphere is lively with loud music and a belly dancer who puts on an amazing show. During birthday celebrations napkins are tossed in the air which adds to the festive vibe. The crowd was very diverse which makes sense since Taverna Opa is located in a tourist area. I think the restaurant was just trying too hard with the belly dancers and trying to engage dinner guests into climbing tables and also throwing up in the air so many white paper napkins! Some Sysco food service distributor representatives is definitely making good money off of this restaurant wastefulness. There is definitely no green initiative here. They were very wasteful with all of the napkins being thrown all over the restaurant. It was so loud that you really couldn't have meaningful conversations at all. Mediocre food plus super loud music and trashy entertainment. No dig on the dancer. She was very sweet. It's just honestly not the right atmosphere and as she is dancing, she has dollar bills on her waist so I believe there is an expectation to tip her to engage with you while you're not even trying to engage with her, she just comes up to you and starts picking someone to dance with her all of this during dinner. Well here we are a year later and we had the whole joint to ourselves. Yocclin was the barkeep (I prefer Max by a long shot) and was only as friendly as she needed to be, which is why I provide 4 stars (rather than 5), which means "not very," or like one says in Greek: " ." Too bad because this AIN'T Hellenic hospitality by any stretch. Anyhoo: Queen Bee appetite still ain't very hearty so we stood with apps and called it a day. First: keftedes and calamari, which we had last time here. Both still well made and yummy. The sauce they serve with the calamari is a big misfire and never had anything like it in Greece whenever I was served calamari. I prefer it plain...just a squirt of lemon is all one needs, just like with keftedes. Onward with more apps from the specials list...Queen Bee had dolmades along with feta and olives. She asked Ms Jocclyn what brand feta they use...she had to ask but said "Duldones." Doldoni is the most popular brand in Greece, along with my fridge back home. So they sealed it for QB. She enjoyed all of it; nothing left for me to try. I chose pork souvlaki and then crispy zucchini. The latter had a small dollop of tzatziki and some shredded kasseri cheese atop it. Not bad on their own; tzatziki actually tasted like it was recently made too. Zucchini was thin chips of said gourd fried to...well: a crisp. Eh...pork souvlaki fared better. Typical Greek pork marinated and grilled to within an inch of its oinkless life. Very good; twas paired alongside nondescript fries topped with Dodoni feta. Next time (should there be one) shall have me purchase an entree rather than a lotta finger food. I know this place can do better. I almost gave three stars rather than four. The food itself barely enabled me to give the fourth...BARELY. At least the restroom was clean. read more

Thoroughly disappointing experience. The prices were absurd. Coming from Portugal, we're used to paying far less for similar food of decent quality, and what we paid here was simply ridiculous for what we got. On top of the outrageous prices, the noise was unbearable. It was so loud that having a normal conversation was impossible, which completely ruined the meal. To make matters worse, we were expected to leave a tip of around $40. Forty dollars in gratuity? Absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend it. The place is chaos, the staff is trying to survive and doesn't really have time for you. We go to Opa's Orlando about once or twice a year and usually has a nice time. So we decided to have my wife's birthday here with a group of friends. Unfortunately, our experience on 8/15, was very disappointing. When attempting to check in for our reservation, the host was rude to the birthday girl, as some of our party was delayed by the overcrowded parking garage. We shrugged it off and got drinks at the bar while awaiting our entire party, but this first impressions are important. During dinner, service was not friendly and mostly absent. Our drink glasses were empty most of the time, and appetizers took forever. Staff serving other tables constantly bumped into our chairs as if we weren't supposed to be sitting at our table. The restaurant was not even at capacity, and there was plenty of staff. The food was good; our issue was mostly around the attitude and attentiveness of the staff. Our party of 9 people spent about a thousand dollars there in two hours, and we were treated as an inconvenience. When paying, the server brought a digital payment method and refused to hand it to me, offering only offensive default tipping options for such poor service. When reaching out the resturant I did not hear back. Two stars since the food was fine. Not sure we'll ever go back. read more

My husband and I both ordered gyro pitas. He ordered with gyro meat and I ordered chicken (no tomato's, no lettuce, and asked for feta). Upon receiving; the gyro meat wasn't as good and juicy as previous. And the kitchen forgot the feta. We waited at least 10 minutes to ask for it (plus we wanted ketchup for our fries). Ambiance was casual with light and airy decor with a cool bougainvillea that centered the main dining. Our servers were fantastic, very friendly, and gave great suggestions on the menu. The saganaki came to the table flaming with brandy, such a fun presentation! The cheese itself was soft and mild on the pita bread. I decided to go with the lamb board and asked to sub the fries and pita for a small Greek salad. The Greek salad was flavorful. The lamb board normally comes with braised lamb, tzatziki, lettuce, tomatoes, pita and fries. Again, I subbed out the pita and fries. The tomatoes were not good - they looked soggy and didn't taste fresh. The lettuce was simply unappealing. The lamb and tzatziki were quite tasty, and I enjoyed it paired with the Greek salad. Throughout the dinner time the venue was filled with music and dancing - which I did not expect. I didn't read any reviews or look it up before coming. Occasionally, the belly dancers would come around and "offer" lessons to the customers. Sometimes there was dancing on the table - by both the staff and the customers. There was even line dancing around the restaurant. Lots of fun entertainment going on during dinner. So, it was a lively crowd, full of music, dance and people having a great time.
