Have been to Taverna many times. Always had a nice time, at the bar or table . Food has always been ok, depends on what you order. Went there this past Friday night, late. Our mistake was eating at the bar. The bartender( is there such a word now?) didn't seem too be interested in waiting on us, after we had our water. Was busy talking to a couple exclusively, who decided it was their right to talk as loud as they wanted. Finely we tracked him down to order. To be fair, he was making drinks, for others. He did bring us our bread, as requested( he didn't ask). When meals came, by other servers, he didn't come back to see if we needed anything. I understand it is a bar, but, we have had other servers more attentive. My husband asked for pepper, after getting wrong one( black instead of red) , my husband doesn't always define his requests, tried to get the " bartenders" attention, to get the right pepper. Took several minutes, even though the bar wasn't that crowded. To make things worse, a 4- some came in, & sat next to our area, & proceeded to talk as loud as they wanted. I heard every discussion about their children. So my advice, get a table if you want to enjoy your meal. Oh one other thing. The music! All we heard was " thump, thump". Why do restaurants have to have music? We have been to some very nice restaurants that do have music, but low, & soft. My one irritation. read more

This was a very underwhelming dining experience. There was no hostess when I arrived and after waiting 5 minutes to be acknowledged, I flagged down a waitress to be seated. While the food was not very good, I have to say my waitress was very kind and her service was spectacular. However, I ordered the eggplant Parmesan sandwich and it was very stale. I could tell it was reheated rather than freshly made. Not what you want for $15. The bread also came out very cold and I had to ask to have it heated up. However, The sun-dried tomato oil that comes with the bread was delicious. I am sure that with some tweaks to the food and interior this could be a great restaurant. Just look at this wonderful gnocchi genovese (basil pesto!!), a classic dish at Taverna! Never have I ever been able to order chicken cutlet with a pasta dish before so it was super exciting!! It gave me major chicken katsu vibes but not quite. This dish was so interesting!! The soft gnocchi with crispy chicken bites was an experience I was not expecting but fully enjoyed! I also don't dine out at many Italian establishments so this experience def taught me that I gotta change that. The calamari here was AMAZING as well. Date night and spotted two seats at the bar! We started off with cocktails and a couple apps: pan fried peppers and calamari. For dinner we ordered mac & cheese & hand cut fettuccine. The cocktails were very good and the apps came out quickly. The calamari was crispy and I love the lemon aioli for dipping. The fried peppers were delicious and the grilled bread was perfect. Our dinners came out steaming hot and amazing as usual. The portions are very large and we always have lunch for the next day! Terrific date night with amazing food and good service. Parking can be tricky, but we lucked out with parking right out front. read more

I organized a dinner with 6 friends at Taverna on a weeknight. They had us at a table in front of the kitchen which was accommodating. I felt comfortable but a few others mentioned it was hot, probably from the pizza oven and kitchen. I always get the chicken taverna because it's consistently tasty. It has breaded chicken, with capers, lemon, white wine cappellini (thin noodle). The Chardonnay is a nice pairing. The bar tender is always funny and attentive. Our waitress checked on us and kept the food and drinks moving along. Some of the people ordered the special which was a salmon/noodle dish but they all didn't realize it was mainly pasta with bits of salmon mixed in. I enjoy the atmosphere and cozy feel of the restaurant. I'll be back again! read more

A "nicer" Italian spot in Wilmington serving truly amazing dishes. This location is large and spacious with plenty of indoor (and seasonal outdoor seating). Our party of six was accommodated without any issues and the staff was friendly and attentive. The food was the real star here. Everything was hot, fresh, and you could tell it was just a higher quality of food but for not much of a higher price tag. Entrees were around $25, which seems more than fair for the deliciousness being served. I highly recommend looking at their daily specials, which take some of their usual menu items and feature them on different days for a lower price between $20-22. We went on a Thursday which was Chicken & Fettuccine Alfredo night, so of course we had to order that and it was amazing. Light, fresh, piping hot and perfectly delicious! read more

Made reservations a week ago for a party of 8 for Nov 30, for my husband's birthday. We arrive and the tables are not set and had to be moved before we were seated, they put us in front of the kitchen, the manager came over because our server wasn't there yet (he did a drink order). We get our drinks and I had to ask our server for a menu to order apps for the table. We ordered and get our appetizers and I have to ask to refill water glasses. Finally our entree orders are taken and I had to ask to clear the table of the empty dishes. The best part of the dinner were the appetizers....the bread and sun dried tomato dip was delicious (note would be better if bread was warmed), the grilled artichokes and the calamari were to die for. We ordered 2 pizzas and 6 entrees. The carbonara was too buttery tasting (no taste of pecorino cheese), and the broccoli rabe was terribly bitter. We finished dinner and we had to locate our server to clear the table and bring the cake out. Finally , the server brings the check, the server walks away, I sign it and WAIT. She never comes back. I finally took the signed invoice up to the manager at the hostess stand, he thanked me and we left the restaurant. Suddenly our server comes running out of the restaurant yelling we didn't pay! I said "yes we did, I waited and finally gave it to your boss"! Don't know if we will return to this restaurant, the servers need to be trained and more attentive. With a party of 8 there should have been 2 servers, it would have been a great tip, but now I'm sorry I tipped at all! How embarrassing was it that she came out and yelled in the parking lot that I didn't pay. read more

I'm not a fan of stopping into a place, sitting at the bar & the bartender doesn't give you the happy hour menu. Just the regular menu even though it's happy hour. It's like they are trying to keep it a secret or something. No mention of it until I asked. Odd. Anyway, there is a DAILY HH from 4:30-6:30 Mon-Sun. I've included the menu. I was in Wilmington, DE for business from California and this was a recommendation from the locals. It did not disappoint!! The food was delicious and so flavorful! We also received concierge level service! I think the owner/Manager himself deliver our food. There were 5 of us and we all very much enjoyed our meals. Taverna Wilmington is a lot bigger than their Newark location and the staff was excellent. I went here with a group of 6 to celebrate a birthday. Although they didn't have any birthday desserts or specialties, they did have a sparkler that we put into a dessert! The table bread came with an oil and crushed tomato dipping sauce that was pretty yummy. The truffle garlic bread was a little too toasted but had good flavor. Everyone enjoyed their dishes and had plenty to take home. I had the spicy shrimp and in my opinion, both the spice and overall flavor could have been amped up. I came here on a Friday with a few of my girlfriends and we all enjoyed our food! They have a pretty substantial list of wines and some of them are on tap! You can get two different size pores and they have quite a few cocktail options as well. We shared the Mediterranean salad and whipped ricotta and really enjoyed the starters! The pizza was brick oven and was solid but I would probably steer clear of the carbonara if you do visit it was a little bit more like glorified buttered noodles and didn't have a lot of the egg/Parm you usually see on the dish. Took my dad here for Father's Day. We waited 25 minutes for our food, place wasn't crowded at all. Both my and my father's salad was unwashed and had sand in it. I have been all over the world and have had food ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to street food. But this place will take first place in the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at and the worst experience. If you want to talk about a place where it took 1 hour and 10 mins to get an appetizer, followed by another 30 mins to get main courses, I would like to note that we were the FIRST ones in the restaurant. They opened at 11 a.m. and we were there 5 mins prior. No excuse for why it should take the first table that long to get served. Alongside waiting that long, we had to physically get up to keep getting basic necessities like water, sauce, etc. It was an absolute nightmare of a restaurant. I counted 19 people working, from what I could see, and the management couldn't get a grasp on their team. I've never seen a manager have to beg and keep asking for hands every 30 seconds. To finish up this "experience" of a restaurant, we were served RAW, pink/purple chicken. Hear me out when they pre-sliced the chicken prior to it coming to the table. That was the cream of the crop. I asked for the "executive" chef, Christina, who I had been made aware was serving as the passer, but she never made our way to our table while we were at a maximum of 5 yards away. No apologies or anything from the "executive" chef. We are just throwing titles to throw titles, and say we have people in place who probably shouldn't be in the position they are in. The management team and honestly the owner or whoever needs to take a deep look into A. This team as a whole, from you're host to your "management" team. B. What the heck is happening to your restaurant. I can assure you this is a mediocre restaurant. I advise they shut down for a week, get their heads together, and re-try. read more

Most everyone liked the food (portions were large!) but service was a little slow. With such a large group, that sometimes happens, but the salads in particular were the slowest which seemed odd. Taverna: Walking in- The medieval but polished atmosphere made this experience a whole lot better. Service- All the food came out in perfect time, we got the appetizers almost immediately after ordering. Appetizers- The bread with the tomato dipping sauce was quite lovely, and the caesar salads flavors were unique in a great way, and was very well dressed. Meal- The margarita pizza was delicious but the sauce was really runny and hard to keep together, and the crust was dull and not flavorful. The mac n' cheese was the best I've ever had, the cheeses blended so well together, and it warmed my body so wonderfully. The eggplant parmesan was delicious, but served with a big portion of almost flavorless spaghetti. The gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce is a salty dish, but it was just too salty for my liking. I love Taverna, and it's one of my favorite go-to restaurants that's nearby, and very well rounded. If indecisive on what to eat for dinner, try out Taverna because I can guarantee you'll love it as much as I do. read more

Went here for dinner. They said they're pizza oven wasn't working so couldn't get any pizzas. That's half the menu so my only options were pasta. Got the calamari for appetizer shells aurora for my entree. The calamari was a rip off, very small amount of calamari. The pasta was fine, that portion size was good. I had the tiramisu and that was okay. The employee behind the bar kept taking her mask off to talk to the customers sitting at the bar. I don't recommend this place for anybody Especially if you have high blood pressure or a heart condition or diabetes. Now I know why they push the glass of water on you. Last night was my first time eating here- previous times have been to just the bar. We had a reservation at 630 on a Fri night and were seated in the back section, which is a semi private area in the back. We were next to a large party (10? 12?). From what I could tell, we were the only other table to be seated in this "room" and for the restaurant not being full, it would've been nice to have sat in the dining room. But, we didn't ask to be moved so won't detract for that. We started with a glass of wine and the artichokes. They were underwhelming, I don't believe they were fresh but canned instead and just grilled. The bread and dipping sauce was very good. Our server asked if we would like more, to which we eagerly said yes, but it never came. I had the carbonara. I think I've only sent food back three times in my life, but this made the 4th. The dish wasn't hot, more room temp. Normally this would be fine, but with all of the bacon fat/butter/cheese/other goodness in this pasta, the fat was starting to congeal. It was heated and brought back out. Tasted a bit better but I don't think I'd order again. Just sort of underwhelming. My friend had a halibut special. Said it was tasty but slightly overcooked. Came with fingerling potatoes that were more like steak fries. We both asked for a second glass of wine. My friend got hers, I didn't. About ten minutes later when dessert came (a delicious tiramisu), our waiter asked if I'd like another glass...? Dinner was $125, which included 4 glasses of wine, one appetizer, two entrees, one dessert. Doubtful that I will return soon. Average food, below average atmosphere, service that was just meh....Just don't think Taverna will be in my regular rotation. read more

We came here on a quiet Sunday night and the service was really slow. We hardly saw our waiter when we wanted to order, get a takeaway box or the check. My water glass had someone else's lipstick on it. Yuck! We tried the dipping oil with the bread that was infused with tomato sauce, which I thought was creative; however, there was no taste and the bread was very bland. The garlic bread fared better in terms of taste but was a bit burnt for my crowd. I had the pork ragu which wasn't bad but is a bit oily as well. Walked in this restaurant Italian atmosphere to enjoy a glass of wine with some food. Waiter was very nice. I asked for a glass of Sauvignon blanc. Sorry we are out. I said ok I'll have Chardonnay. Husband too. We had a salad & sausage penna. was good. The bill comes and they charged me $20 for my 9 ounce glass of wine! Really?? $14 for my husbands 6 oz. I call the manager over cause this just isn't right! I said ok to the house Chardonnay... $12, what's this all about? He says "we were out of the wine you asked for" I replied " Why wouldn't you tell me all you have is $20 glass of wine left? He stood his ground and said" sorry we take pride in our $20 glasses of wine". I asked him if he was going to make any kind of adjustments for this misunderstanding.?? He said, sorry no.
