I don't love italian food so just bear with me lol. Last time I got the scampi and I felt it wasn't hearty enough i'll put it like that. Decided against pasta this time. I started with the Calamari which was great. I think they breaded and fried the peppadews? Never had that but they were good and tasted fresh. Eating the whole cluster of seeds was kind of weird tho lol. But the calamari was tender, not drenched in the aioli, and definitely better than I was expecting. By the time I got my eggplant I wasn't really hungry anymore but it tasted decent. We were really happy with our dinner the other night at Toscana. Appetizer was the best dish of the meal. It was couscous, zucchini, spinach, tomato, with octopus. Absolutely delicious. The entrées were OK. With some minor tweaks, they could be better. The rig was fantastic, however, the Gorgonzola gnocchi totally overpowered the meal to the point where I had to give it to my dad to finish and I ate his entree haha. Gelato was great! Bad Experience It was a birthday dinner and I turned horrible. We ordered pasta dishes and we asked for freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Well they came back to the table with the Kraft Parmesan cheese from the bottle. Our waiter comes comes back over and asked if they offered us cheese and I said they gave us this little cup of cheese he said oh I guess they don't have anymore. This is an Italian restaurant what do you mean there is no fresh Parmesan cheese. As our waiter left the table next to us dinner came and guess what they got the freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Seemed a little racial to us since we were the only people of color in the restaurant at the time. I guess we weren't good enough for the freshly grated Parmesan cheese. We were expecting a more upscale experience of a high end Italian restaurant. We waited 50 minutes for any food to arrive, which is the fault of the kitchen, not our excellent waitress' service. Drinks were fast, they were also delicious. Linguine bolognese is not actually Bolognese - it is like 1 lb of ground beef and undercooked vegetables with pasta. Our teen daughter would not eat her meal. It really didn't have sauce, it was just a lot of meat and vegetables which she was not expecting. Short ribs were dry and salty, there is an opportunity to improve here. Breadsticks were good but there was no seasoning in the oil you dip them in which was disappointing. Salad was fine, halibut was the star at our table, it was very good. Bathroom could use a good cleaning especially on the ceiling. Gelato was and tiramisu were very good. We would not return here and were disappointed. read more

Finally, an Italian restaurant in the area who makes real authentic eggplant parmesan. Not the breaded fried crap that every single other Italian restaurant serves around here. This was probably the best eggplant parmesan dish I've had in the area. It's actually a side but they'll make it into an entree which I will do next time. My husband ordered the chicken gnocchi special and the gnocchi was delicious and cushiony like it should be. I had the kitchen salad as an entree and I asked for it to be vegetarian meaning keep all the meat off but they made it vegan which was a little annoying to me. It was also very late on the dressing and they needed to bring me another one. The salad itself was substantial though with a lot of healthy goodies in it. Wine bottle prices are obnoxiously expensive which is why I'm only giving this four stars but restaurants around here seem to do that crap. However, the food prices were very reasonable and there was no credit card fee so bonus. Our server was a lot of fun too. We usually come here and sit at the bar which I like that it's a separate area. We've always had good experiences sitting at the bar too. We will definitely be back. read more

We dined at at Piccolina Toscana last night to show our support for restaurant week. Last night I spoke to my partner about how good the food was. Today I went eat what I had my server had boxed up for me to take home and my tuna loin was not with my risotto. I was very skeptical when my server asked to box up my food and this is the reason why. As a restaurant let your patrons box their own food. I don't think I'm coming back until this practice is changed. read more

DO NOT Purchase Casual Catering through Picolina Toscana. I hosted a luncheon with friends and family using Toscana's Casual Catering menu. The party was for 12 noon, and majority of my guests were coming from out of town. They called at 12:02 PM when the food was supposed to be delivered to let me know they'd be late but didn't know how long. "Car troubles." For the next hour, no one picked up the phone when I called and no one knew where the delivery driver was located. They showed an hour late, and I did not have any food to offer guests since I hosted the party at a family member's house. The delivery person told me "someone will be in contact" with me about a resolution. After ordering $500 in food from Toscana, the best resolution they had was 10% off and an additional $25 off, which didn't cover the delivery fee. Please DO NOT use this catering service. I wish I had ordered from Wegmans. read more

My husband and I came here for Wilmington restaurant week! The food looked really good on Yelp but the reviews were alittle concerning. I decided to give them a shot anyway. The restaurant week menu was alittle underwhelming but we found some things we would like. Our waitress asked us what type of water we wanted since we said we wanted water so I said tap vs. sparkling (which is fine whatever). We got two glasses of RT water like they were indeed from the tap. I noticed later every other table had cold ice water served to them. Strange. We got bread and oil quickly which we inhaled. After we ordered we waited atleast 30 mins for our first appetizers. We noticed the restaurant getting more crowded and the wait staff running around. We asked for more bread and it took even longer to get. For some reason it seemed like other tables were getting served their meals much faster than ours. For apps we got the flatbread and meatballs. The meatballs seemed like frozen meatballs (doesnt seem homemade) but the sauce and mushrooms in the dish was good! The flatbread was pretty good too. Our meal was another 30 mins (1 hr) and we still haven't gotten our entrees. Our waitress didn't even check on us or apologize for the delay it's like she didn't care about our table at all. Eventually we got our entrees. My husbands shrimp pasta was pretty good while mine was just not good. I got the tuna loin with saffron risotto with lemon sauce. It looks like the sauce just sat there and dripped off the risotto. The risotto was way over cooked and mushy. It looked like my dish was sitting under the heat lamp for awhile. I ate some of the tuna loin and the risotto was just gross. We got our desserts alittle but faster this time. My chocolate cake was pretty good and my husband enjoyed his tiramisu. We were annoyed how long everything was and how expensive it still was for the quality of food. Not sure if I would return. There are way better Italian places in Wilmington in my opinion. I gave 2 stars one for the appetizer and one for the dessert. read more

My wife and I stopped in for dinner during restaurant week. I mention this as the items we ordered were from a special prefix menu. The restaurant had three outdoor tables which we were able to reserve specifically. This is great for those who are still anxious about indoor dining and COVID. The food was very good. The service was ok, but not what I'd define as great. Our initial waiter was nice, but the food service was slow. Took quite a while for our drinks and food to arrive. I know restaurants are doing their best with short staffs, but it was quite a while from seating to drinks to order to food arriving. Over an hour from the time we were seated to when our food arrived. The restaurant week menu gave a limited option for three courses. They all had fancy Italian names, which I no longer remember. I chose the baked ricotta, the octopus pasta dish, and the caramel cheesecake. My wide had the charcuterie plate, the agnolotti, and lemon mascarpone cake. I really enjoyed all the food. I'd be happy to go back again and partake in the traditional menu. Overall positive experience. read more

Great food and awesome service. Ordered the polpo, grilled avocado, short rib, and pomodoro pasta (they were accommodating for gluten-free diet as well!). Their cocktails were also fantastic (strong and flavorful) and arrived on time (unlike what other reviews say). For dessert we ordered their lemon cake. It was superb! Had Valentine's Day dinner here. The food was delicious, when we finally got it, and that's the reason so many stars were knocked off. Look - I get it, it's one of, if not THE busiest night of the year. The kitchen lost our entree order and it took over an hour to correct it - and that was only because I asked someone. Again, I get it. But aside from an explanation from our server, after I had to flag him down, that was it. I'm disappointed that our appetizer or drinks weren't taken off the bill or that we weren't given a small discount, or a free dessert to take home. Something that said "we screwed up, sorry about that, please come back and try us again when we aren't slammed like this." Overall though it was still a pleasant evening. For many years, this was our favorite restaurant. I'm sorry to say that the quality of the food and service is less than average. The chicken was very dry, the pasta was over cooked and the salad was drowned in balsamic, no olive oil it would seem. The wine menu was sparse as well. Went last night for the first time in a long time. Our server was fantastic! I think his name was Joe. Very attentive and friendly. The complimentary breadsticks were a bit hard, however, you could tell the olive oil they served with it was good quality. The fried calamari was average and I got the eggplant stuffed ravioli and it was just ok. I asked the server for a dry wine suggestion and he was spot on. It was around $13.00- decent food and I was surprisingly full even though it didn't look like they gave me enough pasta- thank goodness I didn't order more even though I felt like it. I recently made a "to go" order and was totally dissapointed. The lamb shank could have been the best item, but was not even remotely warm. The crab cakes were passable but also cold. Worse, the grilled veggies were stone cold and soggy, the wings were also cold, pale and flabby, the beignets were actually wet on the bottom and the salted caramel cheesecake was more like pudding with a soggy crust. It seems that things are boxed up way ahead and just plucked from the fridge and sent out. I have not eaten in the restaurant, but will never again order "to go". I would have given this place five stars had it not been for the coffee pot. I was there yesterday for an event. There was a buffet, dessert table, and coffee/tea area. When I poured the coffee, the lid on it malfunctioned, and boiling hot coffee splattered all over my hand and the table. I ended up with a second degree burn. The entire point of having a lid is that the liquid either a.) pours out normally b.) doesn't pour out at all. Please don't serve customers a beverage dispenser with a damaged lid, ESPECIALLY if there's scalding hot liquid inside. Buy a new one, it's worth the money. Brian was an outstanding server. Our drinks were promptly served (excellent martinis by the way) and he asked if we wanted apps. We ordered the carpaccio, which was a winner. He suggested we just sit back and enjoy our martinis before placing our order which we appreciated. We never felt rushed. The scallop dish was an absolute home run from the kitchen staff as well as the gnocchi. The lemon ricotta cake and caramel cheesecake provided a perfect end to our dinner. Absolutely love this place, and if you don't love it as much as I do, then try ordering from Toscana to go instead and I guarantee you will change your mind. The pasta menu at Toscana to go are where it's at. Don't overlook the capellini- it's probably the best seasoned capellini I've ever eaten. We also love the ravioli, the gnocchi, and the eggplant mellanzane (sorry if I misspelled that). The price for those 4 together is juuuuust at or slightly under $50 and quantity wise it's more than enough for takeout for 2-4 people (and you will have leftovers!!) read more

As a vegetarian who prefers to eat gluten-free, I know I'm not the easiest customer for a restaurant to please. Still, this place has a little room for improvement, so I thought I'd mention my experiences here. Not wanting to eat meat, fish, or gluten, I made a meal out of half an app and a small entree. My food was tasty: the grilled avocado app was very good, though it definitely needed a light sprinkle of salt, and there was none on the table. Our server disappeared for such long stretches of time that I didn't want to wait and just ate it sans salt. My small (read: very small) salad entree was listed as beets, arugula, cheese, and almonds. I got an unexpected upgrade to pine nuts instead of almonds. I'm not complaining, but it would have been nice to be notified of changes to the dish I was ordering. A word of advice to gluten-free customers: After ordering I later learned that there was a risotto dish under the "pasta" section of the menu. Since I avoid most gluten, I didn't even look at the pasta. Strange that they would put a risotto dish there. Also, the dessert menu has many (three I think?) gluten-free options including a gluten-free brownie sundae. It clearly mentions gluten-free on the dessert menu. However their main menu never once mentions gluten-free options or uses GF icons or anything. My boyfriend's trout meal was disappointing. It was served skin side up (a bit unusual?) and said it came with potatoes and a pea puree. His peas were whole, not pureed, and the potatoes were nearly raw. Not just al dente. Basically just off-raw. The server was very sweet, but not quite as present as he could have been, as our water glasses went unfilled for long stretches. read more

Although it's a little pricey for the portion of food you get, the quality is high and the restaurant's decor is very pretty. I really enjoyed the Ravioli alla Brasata! My server was so busy that he misheard my order and brought me the incorrect fettuccine entree, but when he didn't check back, I ate it anyway, because I didn't want to wait any longer. Piccolina Toscana is located in a small strip mall in the Trolley Square area. It is not easy to find. In reality, you would be better off not dining there, especially if you are hungry. My dining companion had suggested trying the restaurant. He had heard some good things about it. But this is Delaware and good food does not make it's home here. Had I stopped to read the reviews first, this dining experience would never have happened. Piccolina has an open dining room with little to no ambiance to speak of: think cafeteria with linen on the tables and 3 pieces of decorative canvases on the rear wall. The lack of ambiance was accentuated by the almost empty shelves where they open air store the glasses. The restaurant was only populated by one other table when we arrived for lunch. It rarely is a good portent that a restaurant is empty during the lunch hour. We were told that we could not have a table in the back because a large party was coming in shortly. They never arrived in the hour plus that we were there. I had a problem with the rim or my glass of tonic water being dirty, as verified by my server. I am thankful that I was using a straw and did not have much of it. (It was on the bill, despite my server offering a replacement.) There was also another badly cleaned piece of glassware on the table, also verified by our server. Despite this, nothing was done to replace even the dirty water glass(s) on the table. It's difficult to review the service in a practically empty restaurant. Suffice it to say that we had good service: our server had only our table, but was handling 2 more two top tables by the time we were midway through our meal, which is nothing that a good server cannot handle easily. There were 3 servers on the floor in total and none were handling more tables than our server. Warm breadsticks and olive oil are brought to the table. All 2 of them. While this is always a nice touch, it could be vastly improved by flavouring the olive oil. If it were an exceptional EVO that they were showcasing, this comment wouldn't be here. It's not. I ordered the lunch Risotto with Mushrooms and Braised Veal and a Cesare side salad. My friend ordered the Capellini al Pomodoro. Prior to ordering the risotto I had asked my server whether they pre-batched it: I was concerned about it being mushy. I was told that it was made when ordered. Considering that they use Carnaroli rice, (which is a step above the usual Arborio) and local Kennett Square Mushrooms I expected a good dish to be served. I was very disappointed with the meal I was served. The plating on all of the dishes was nothing special, and the portion size was small even considering that these were lunch portions. The Cesare salad was fresh and bright, with lovely large gratings of Parmesan. What I did miss was the Cesare dressing. Whatever bottle it came from wasn't the correct one. The risotto was over cooked. Not mushy, but not to the tooth, as it should have been. The use of the Canaroli rice can give the dish a more velvety feel than you would have with the more usual Arborio rice. It was well seasoned, but there was definitely some un-mentioned and un-necessary cheese in it. The veal was tender and beautifully cooked, but would have benefited from some seasoning to enhance it. I question why chopped parsley was used as a garnish? It is not only an outdated garnish, but it adds nothing to the eye appeal or to the taste of the dish. My friend had informed our server that I was a chef when we were ordering. I told my server to let the chef know that the risotto was over cooked. Apparently the chef does not even have the decency to come out of the kitchen to discuss or apologise for a poorly cooked meal with a customer, much less a fellow chef. The Capellini al Pomodoro was bland tasting. Factory produced pasta with a sauce that lacked any verve to it. It also had the ubiquitous chopped parsley. While I don't have a problem with a Risotto costing $18, (given that it is labor intensive) I do have a problem with a minuscule lunch portion at that price. I do recognise that this restaurant is in the wealthier portion of Wilmington: but, this is neither Philadelphia, nor is it NYC. Piccolina Toscana would, in my opinion, benefit from a prix fixe lunch and dinner menu. It would also benefit from having a chef who cared about what he was serving to customers. Piccolina got 1star from me for the quality of some of the ingredients only. Not for the disservice that their chef gave those ingredients. read more
