Driving back from the shore, I asked gpt to recommend an unpretentious, nostalgic Italian-American joint and she uncorked this absolute gem. Wood paneling? Kitschy paper placemats? Neon beer signs? Yes! I sat at the bar and was treated like an old friend by the bartender. I ordered veal parmigiana, choosing to start with Italian wedding soup and picking ravioli for my side. The soup was warm and light, almost like starting a Japanese meal with miso. Veal parm was exactly what you'd expect, but I'd always had it with spaghetti and not ravioli. It paired really nicely with the cheesy ravioli! Then, the coup de grace -- tiramisu and espresso to keep me awake for the rest of the drive. Italian is what I wanted. Ristorante Attilio is where Yelp told me that I should go. I ordered a linguine with white clam sauce and a fried smelt over the phone. They told me that it would take about 20 minutes. 10 minutes later, I arrived to pick up the food. It wasn't ready. I paid and a few minutes later, I picked up my food and drove back to the hotel. The linguine with clam sauce was a nice hearty portion, enough for my wife and I. The linguine contained a lot of clams and was enough for my wife and I. I ordered the fried smelt because I didn't know how big their portions were. The smelt were small bite sized fish. It came with marinara sauce. The fish along with the sauce were okay. Service was good from the person taking my order to the people I spoke to when I first walked in. Their take out is around the corner. There is no parking lot. Only street parking. Sunday night and we arrived a hair before 6pm to try to beat the evening rush. When we got there, there were no tables available, but a party or two were about to finish up. After about a 5 minute wait, we were seated in their small and cramped dining area. There were only a couple of parties to follow us and the crowd appeared to be a lot of regulars. We had come to try out Ristorante Attilio because I'd seen a few friends post recently about their sun dried peppers. So of course, I had to order them. A little spicy for the kids, but they did like them. Prices are reasonable. Portion sizes are actually a bit modest for an Italian restaurant. Friendly staff. I've been wanting to try this place for quite some time. The restaurant was a throw back to my childhood; dimly lit, dark wood panels with basic decor and lots of regulars out for Sunday supper. I had the spaghetti with clams in white sauce with a side of greens. My bf had the chicken Parm with a side of spaghetti. The spaghetti with clams was really good, especially after mixing in the greens and adding some grated parmesan cheese with a little red pepper flakes. We decided to give this place a try on Valentine's day. We have always driven by and said we wanted to try it. Disappointed to say the least. We started with the calamari which was cut too think and was difficult to eat, very rubbery and just overall inedible. We then got our caesar salad which came with the entrees. The lettuce was wilted and the croutons were so stale it was almost impossible to bite through. The chicken parm was okay. Chicken was not breaded as much and I expected a chicken cutlet to be. The girl clearing tables asked me as I was mid bite, with half my meal left if she could take my plate. Confused, I told her I was still eating and watched her do the same thing to other tables. Haven't been to Attilio in a couple of years. Food was still good, although the sauce was a little bland for my taste. Service was fine, pleasant. Not crowded, for all the parked cars around the business. Parking is a pain( on the street), No ambiance, straightforward, service with a smile & food brought to you in a timely manner. They are known for their hot peppers appetizers. And they were HOT! I had a chicken cutlet which I thought would be flat. Nope a real piece of chicken, a little dry & chewy.I ate most of it though . Another great spot we found of Italian food. How often do you really get to enjoy good Lasagna inside of a restaurant? Well we stopped here for dinner, and I was a happy camper. Took my parents (who are fairly picky eaters) to Ristorante Attilio for an early Sunday dinner recently. We arrived to the unassuming, wood-paneled, somewhat outdated dining room around 5 PM and were asked to wait about 5-10 minutes for our table. Once seated, service was quick, friendly, and attentive. For drinks, we stuck to water, but I did see carafes of wine on other tables. Complimentary bread and butter is provided, and I ordered a side salad for my appetizer. The salad was essentially a bowl packed with iceberg lettuce with two thin tomato slides and two rings of raw white onion on top --- not really worth the almost $5. My mom ordered corn chowder (soup of the day) and said it was good, though didn't seem overly impressed. For entrees, we had some hits and some misses: my parents ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and the spinach lasagna (one of the daily specials) and both really enjoyed their meals. I ordered the "Very Special" house lasagna, made with mini meatballs, prosciutto, and hard-boiled egg, which I liked, though I probably wouldn't choose it again. Mom and I both agreed that her spinach lasagna was superior. BF ordered the gnocchi, which tasted kind of watery and flavorless. The portions are large and filling, and I had enough leftover lasagna to take for lunch the next day. Based on other reviews, I think I may have simply mis-ordered --- next time, I'll skip the side salad, try a different entree, and definitely save room for dessert (some cakes went by on a tray and looked delectable)! read more

I visited this quaint little authentic restaurant last night with a "regular" visitor of this establishment. I now know why he's a regular. First, the ambiance is so comfy cozy. Second, the staff seems so friendly. Even the owner or manager, not sure, stopped by when we walked in and at the end to see how things were. As for the food, it's fresh and delicious! I highly recommend the cherry pepper shooters. I could eat those all day! I had the manicotti and was also able to try the ravioli. The pasta is homemade and delicious! It also has this light versus heavy feel to it. I'd describe the ravioli as fluffy even! You can tell they use high quality ingredients. The desserts (we tried tiramisu and a lemon coconut cake) were fresh, moist, rich and delicious as well. Have heard great things about Attilio's and it didnt disappoint. I got food to go consisting of Italian Wedding soup, a cannoli, and cheese ravioli with meatballs. It was some real solid food, I loved the red sauce that came with the Ravioli. I was scraping the container by the end of it for the sauce. Meatball was juicy, cheese ravioli had a nice amount of filling. Also the bread that it came with was real nice, dont think they make the bread there but still good regardless. Cannoli was good as well, you're typical Cannoli. For 5.75 though wasn't anything special enough to warrant getting it again. I'm a big fan of Italian wedding soup, but this one was alright. Wasnt enough meatballs but it still had some decent flavors to it. Overall a good experience, will definitely be back to try more. read more

Someone who has lived in Delaware their whole life raved about this place, so I convinced a co-worker to try it with me. What a disappointment! I was hoping for homemade pasta and flavorful sauces, but instead got boiled, reconstituted carbs no better than the dried Barilla you buy in the grocery store. The pesto was heavy on the oil and light on the basil, and my co-worker suspected the meatball on his dish came from Sysco and spent most its life in the freezer. The service was fine, but it really seems like this place is not what it once was. When the old-world grandparents who made food from scratch pass away and the next generation (or some buyer) takes over the family restaurant, I suppose there is always the temptation to trade on the reputation of yore while phoning it in. No trip to Delaware should not include a visit to Attilio's. We were introduced to Attilio's years ago and keep coming back. It's a small place so be prepared to wait, but you won't be disappointed if you like Italian food. Soup and salad starters include traditional fare - antipasto, smelts, wedding soup. All excellent. Pasta dishes are authentic and made from scratch. Spaghetti is rough in texture and perfectly cooked. Niche and other pasta dishes are plentiful and tasty. Chicken parmigiana, my benchmark dish, was perfect. Place is small and everyone knows each other. When one table leaves they stop and talk with other tables on the way out. The location is sketchy but we've never had issues parking the car and walking. read more

First of all, I am not from Delaware, I am from Northern New Jersey on assignment in Wilmington, DE. I love exploring new areas. As for Italian restaurants I have only been to the following: 1. Pastabilities - Not going back anytime soon. Overpriced and overcooked pasta. 2. Mrs. Rubino's - Good food. Good prices. Traditional. Attilio's Ristorante. After reading many good reviews on the internet I decided to go there myself. Ordered the Smelt and Broccoli Rabe with Olive Oil and Garlic for appetizer. Delicious. Combo Ravioli and Lasgna with Meatball for main course and finished the meal with a Cannoli. Loved the Ravioli, excellent! Lasgna was also good. My friend had the Ravioli, Spaghetti & meatball combo, Cannoli and espresso. Dinner for 2 with tips, $56. Not bad. Although similar to Mrs. Rubino's in ambience, pricing and style, I personally like Attilio's slightly better. So far Attilio's is the best Italian Restaurant in Wilmington, DE. I miss you Attilio's. Now for all those who have been posting bad reviews, I am sorry that you have gone to Attilio's under it's current management. I knew the family that used to run it and it really was a great place. My family would go to Attilio's before Saturday 5 o'clock mass and we all had our favorites. My favorite was the cheese ravioli, my sister got the stuffed shells, my mother would get the lasagna, and my father would get the green beans and onions (special order, not on the menu). We would also order the antipasta. It was amazing. The best thing about Attilio's was it's sauce. It was traditional, and outstanding. I have yet to eat at an Italian restaurant to have that family style quality sauce. As far as the decor, it's looked that way for over 20 years and has never bothered me. To be honest, I don't go to an Italian restaurant for the decor, I go for the sauce. If it's got great sauce, that's all that matters. I see that the recent reviews are terrible, and that really sucks. Not that the reviews are misleading (I've heard the quality has gone down since the sons didn't want to take over the restaurant) but disheartening that such a great traditional family Italian place has fallen. I know my review is definitely misleading because of the four stars and negative review because the place has gone downhill, but I just wanted to give the old Attilio's some love because nowadays you can't find a place like it. Not Madeline's and not Mrs. Robino's. They are just as bad now as they were 20 years ago. And that won't change. read more

I was in the mood for Italian last night but I didn't want to go far. After reading reviews on Yelp, my girlfriend and I decided to come to this place. It was a Saturday night and it was very busy. It felt like a popular local joint because many people recognized each other. We were a bit surprised by their menu. It had items such as "Spaghetti, Spaghetti with meatballs, Spaghetti with sausage, Spaghetti with meatballs on the side..."... not exactly, but a lot of the items seemed like the same things. I was expecting at least some dishes like Penna All'Arrabiata, etc. I ordered Greens over Spaghetti and she ordered Spezzato over Spaghetti. The food didn't take very long to come out. The spaghetti in both our dishes were overcooked -- mushy, like they made one gigantic batch of spaghetti at the beginning of the night and were serving it to everyone last night. The spinach and broccoli rabe in my dish tasted okay; it tasted like they used frozen vegetables. The spezzato, a veal stew with mushrooms and green peppers, tasted like it was from Chef Boyardee. Needless to say, I had high expectations from this place after reading the reviews and was disappointed. read more

Simple, good food. I wonder if it's my grandmother in the kitchen, and then I realize some of the food is actually better than my grandmother's. This is classic Italian soul food and they do it perfectly. The only pasta options are spaghetti because (and I suspect Daniel L was unaware of this) their spaghetti is homemade. Yes, it has a different texture than dried box pasta. It is so much better. If you're not Italian, and eat jarred pasta sauces, come here. If you're part Italian, and only eat good Italian food with your family, come here. If you're Italian and you make your own sauce but don't feel like it today, come here. I actually found myself eating their sauce by the spoonful like soup; this is coming from a culinary-educated Italian girl who critiques her MOTHER'S sauce for not being quite right. Part of the problem with some of these reviews is expectations. This is not an Italian restaurant, it is an Italian-American restaurant. The tomato sauce is thick and overcooked. Exactly how Italian Americans like their gravy. That being said, I go for two things, the homemade pasta and greens ,and the long hot peppers. Both are perfection! The long hots are dried first and then fried and can be eaten like french fries. The greens are on the dry side, the pasta is not swimming in a liquid of garlic and oil. Mix some of those long hots in with it and you have Heaven. There really is no excuse for the decor. It's old and it's dated. I don't find it charming. read more

Great Italian food !!! The atmosphere is right out of the Godfather! So if some goes to the bathroom while you are eating dinner you better make sure they are not packing a weapon when they return!! The wait staff are very helpful and friendly. The prices are fantastic and the quality of the food is second to none! The portion size is great and you might even have lunch from your doggy bag! If you have any room please try their desserts, they are worth the calories. The only negative is the street parking can get hairy! Love this place. I only ate in once or twice and much prefer to take-out because the dining area is so shoddy. But the food? So good! It is very difficult for me to find good southern italian food as my grandparents were straight off the boat, lived in little Italy, had an italian bakery for years & taught me how to cook. Everything I or friends we ate with ever ordered from Attilio's was delicious- except the meatballs, too onion-y flavored for me. The garlic bread, the "VERY SPECIAL " lasagna, the cheese ravioli, you name it. I've even gotten the frozen ravioli for days I wasn't able to cook or lunches at work.
