Same story as many of the other reviews. I answered an ad on Craigslist, that appeared to be a direct hire for an Office Manager position. Lindsay emailed me asking if I could come in for an interview, and when I saw the job title "Director of Legal Division, Recruiting", I decided to google the company.... which is, of course, when I learned that they are a staffing agency. In general, I don't like to deal with folks who aren't upfront and this felt like a red flag but I scheduled an interview because I felt like it couldn't hurt to go see what they're about. (It is worth noting that I was asked to bring two forms of ID for payroll and that felt shady too.) I used that opportunity to for a bit more about the position via email and was told that it was in the early stages and that they needed more information themselves. Um, what? At that point, I became ill and had to reschedule the interview. I sent another email requesting more information. Lindsay said she would "try her best" to obtain it, but that I would need to come in anyway. Finally, I composed a professional but stern email, basically calling them out and stating that the lack of transparency was making me uncomfortable, and that I needed to know exactly what was on the table. At that juncture, I received a lengthy email explaining that yes, I applied to the Office Manager position, but that they have two to three available and would need ID because they're temp to perm, and the agency issues your pay for the first three months. She copied and pasted an example of a job description she was referring to. I wrote back thanking her for the clarification but never received a response. Though she was very nice, I feel like there was dishonesty from the very start, and that I had to do a lot of insisting and digging to get any actual facts. It doesn't make me feel like they'd be very useful in placement, negotiation, or back up - and at that point, I'm better off on my own. read more

Granted, this was much faster than usual, but Minerva, Janice, and Cynthia also sent me on another interview and had two others lined up when the opportunity that panned out turned up. I was contacted via telephone by Cathy M. on Oct 15 after I responded to an ad on Craigslist. At the time, the job didn't seem like a good fit but I told her I would call her the next time I was planning to be in the city so I could complete an application, meet her, her learn about other opportunities and such. She agreed. I called her back Nov 5 and the receptionist took my name, put me on hold and then told me Cathy was on the other line, but would call me back. She was ready to hang up, but I asked if I could leave my telephone number since I doubted that Cathy still had my resume from two weeks earlier. The receptionist took my number, but Cathy never called back. I received an e-mail from Cynthia M. on Oct 21 regarding a job I had applied to on CareerBuilder on Sep 26. I informed Cynthia that the hiring firm had unfortunately, already seen my resume through another recruiter back in September. She responded that she would keep me in mind if other opportunities should arise. I e-mailed her again Nov 4 to inquire if she would like me to stop by their office to complete a new candidate application since I would be in the neighborhood several days, I did not get a response from her either. So far, my first two impressions of them are not very favorable. read more

I also agree with Marita S. that Taylor Hodson Staffing deserves MUCH more credit than a few people have given them. First off, these businesses exist because they take a cut of what would conceivably be a part of your salary at the job that you can only pretty much find through them. Lots of these jobs are low paying $9-$20 (which is low if you have to pay back debts from a fucking grad degree that got you nowhere but into a deep hole). The jobs are also dependent upon the clients that the temp service happens to have. The temp service is beholden to the type of employee that the CLIENT seeks, so who they call is an enigmatic blend between availability and fit. In these lean times, no one's special, so forget what your mom told you. The last time temp services guaranteed a job was pre-2009. Now, applicants WILL outweigh vacancies, even in jobs you'd be above doing . When there's activity, the staffing office will be busy as hell, unable to tend to your emotional needs or even contact you if you don't fit into a spot they need to fill. That said, you can't fault an agency. Don't hate them; hate this terrible economy and the trend of most businesses (non-profits included) in paying staffing services because they would rather do that then commit to salarying people when it's not a sure thing. They are the ones who want to get overqualified people to work for clerical per-hour pay rates. But what YOU get out of it is a gig you normally wouldn't have had - or a gig, period. It gives you the freedom to jump around if you are an artistic or freelancing type. You can also walk away with any connections or experiences that you gain from temp experiences, however short they are. Moving on: I found a gender balanced office on my first visit to the site. As for any male claiming that the company is sexist...are you kidding me? I still don't think there is any professional environment in which a woman has a given advantage over a man. And even if she does, it's little payback for the eternity of chauvinism that preceded workplace equality. Men whining that women get all the jobs should consider how that comes off. Man up and compete, because the game just got harder...for men and for women. So take it like a "man." When I walked into Taylor Hodson, I was completely at the end of my rope after a long, disconcerting bout of unemployment. I met several of the staff (again, a small group of women AND men), and basically poured my heart out and said how I was one breath away from peacing out to Alaska...and so on and so forth. The agent who took on my case, listened...she really listened, and if she thought I was kind of a whacko, she didn't let it show. Then, she got really practical, and spent a good portion of an hour asking me pretty insightful questions, gaining knowledge of my background and skills and my specifications/desires for future work. Knowing I was totally desperate for income, she hooked me up with a very easy 3-day stint at a huge investment firm between Christmas and New Year's. Though three days sounds ridiculous, it made all the difference to me, and made up the last bit of rent I needed and helped me buy groceries for January. She then called me up a couple more times, floating options that hadn't even been stated in my preferences, just in case. Foolishly, I refused, and was going to be really up the creek when I finally got a full time job. I let her know, but said that I was always open to an upgrade. However, I did not expect that she would waste her time tending to someone already situated in a salaried position. BUT SHE DID. She contacted me about an opportunity when I was a few weeks into the job. I followed through and things went well. From there on out, she followed through all the way, personally mediating and negotiating on my behalf even when the company decided to hire me permanently and was going to therefore pay a premium to the staffing agency anyway. Am I giving five stars just because I happened to get really lucky after being unlucky as fuck for a block solid year? Well, yeah, but so? It's pretty clear to me that none of this would have been possible without this particular staffing agency and the thoughtfulness of one of its employees even after other places would have dusted their hands of me since I already had a job. Before you rip up a staffing agency for not getting you what you want, you might want to remind yourself that in this situation more than ever, it's just business. It's a business about business, for Christ's sake, so don't take it personal if they don't treat you like a career counselor at an Ivy. What matters is attentiveness and resourcefulness, and you'll get that here, Whether your conversations with T.H. ends up in a job or not is up to a LOT more than the quality of this business and your worth as a member of society. I was actually impressed with this agency despite them not finding me work (another agency beat them to it). But from my experience, they seem to be a dedicated team. They set me up with a couple of companies to interview for - one I was really interested in, but unfortunately, they just took too long to get back to me due to a staffing restructure. The other wasn't for me but gave me good interview experience. Minerva was really fantastic in keeping me updated and calling me almost daily with moral support (being unemployed is really hard!), and prepping me for interviews. I would recommend, but I think my resume/qualifications were a bit too qualified for the types of roles they had on hand. If you're after competitive EA or admin roles, I'd highly recommend them. read more

I have been overwhelmingly happy with my Taylor Hodson experience. I am about to attend my second interview through this agency. The first was with a highly prestigious firm; yet while I appreciated the opportunity, it might not have been the greatest fit for me and I believe my interviewer agreed. But Kathryn recognizes my professional strengths; she immediately set me up with an interview for another position that I believe will be more my speed. In addition, she has been kind and extremely thorough in helping me prepare for interviews. I can only imagine that the candidates who left negative reviews lack either the qualifications or the level of polish Taylor Hodson feels comfortable submitting to top clients. They got me in to interview quickly, got me work quickly and have worked with my flux between true temp work and finding a long term temp to hire position. They've been great to other people I've sent their way. They've been supportive when I've had bad temping assignments to get me out of there. They've also helped me find a really great job that I hope to turn permanent. Also, when there was a paycheck snafu, they went above and beyond to make sure I got paid. Taylor Hodson is by far the best of the staffing agencies I've come across in New York. Let me explain: First off, their clients are legit. All of the places I've been sent have been in Manhattan with sweet offices and highly professional personnel. I've been sent to consulting firms that work with Fortune 100 companies, a big name financial services company, and up and coming start ups. Second, the recruiting professionals themselves at Taylor Hodson are professional and classy. They're well spoken, conscientious (will remind you to turn in your timesheet if you forget), and check out clients prior to sending you out to them. I can say this for certain about Lauren, Theresa, and Ed, but especially about Lauren; I've worked with her most closely. She's a great recruiter. Lastly, they don't seem to be just collecting candidates to increase the size of their potential temp workers pool-- meaning they seem to be as much or more on the side of the temp workers as they are with their big name clients. Taylor Hodson seems to genuinely want to find their temp workers jobs. Anyway, it's a great place that should continue being a trustworthy New York institution. read more

I was in their neighborhood for an interview so walked into their office to drop off my resume, with the hope that someone might have a minute to speak with me impromptu, at least enough to see that I dress appropriately, have a poised demeanor, etc. Now, granted, I didn't have an appointment. And I certainly didn't expect anyone to roll out a red carpet. But I also didn't expect the receptionist to look at me like I'd just asked her to let me hold her wallet. "We don't DO that," she said icily. "You MUST have an appointment." "Okay," I said, taking the clipboard she offered. "I just thought maybe somebody would be free to shake hands-- you know, put a face to the name." I spoke casually, hoping to convey "no hard feelings, I was just askin'." She literally glared at me and then said haughtily, "I'll SEE if someone can talk to you." I took a seat and started filling out the form. Then I hear "clomp clomp clomp" and look up to see a female recruiter standing over me. I stand up and introduce myself, saying, "Thank you so much for coming out to speak with me." She stares at me accusingly and says, "I am NOT coming out to speak with you, I am coming out to tell you that we only see people by appointment. Fill out the form and if we are interested in speaking with you, someone will contact you." Her attitude was pretty darn close to hostile. I wondered what the receptionist had told her. That I was insisting on speaking with someone? It was so over the top that I almost laughed. I'd just inquired if someone was free and suddenly there was drama all around me. I asked her a question- I forget what, and thanked her again for coming out, and she did almost seem baffled that I was not some odious demanding creature who'd come in and started making demands. So when she clomped off back to her desk (I think her shoes were uncomfortable or something), there was a tad of humanity about her. I considered leaving without filling out the form, but I'd said I'd do it and I was curious about what else would happen. So I sat there and filled it out, and watched other people come in and interact with the receptionist. It seemed like people who were looking for temp jobs were received with more interest, and recruiters came out to quickly talk to them and give them the once-over, even if they didn't have an appointment. (I'd said that I was not interested in temping. Perhaps that was my crime.) When I returned the completed clipboard packet to the receptionist, she smiled sweetly as if the earlier part of our interaction hadn't happened. That said, I am pretty sure the minute I left, my info went into the trashcan. I was not surprised when, despite my excellent credentials, I never heard from them. I left that encounter very grateful for the recruiters I've met who ARE respectful-- Forrest Solutions, for example, where Gail Bloom met me with no appointment and has continued to be an ally in my job search. Core Staffing, even the dreaded Glocap where so far as I know, no one ever really gets an interview for anything. But at least the people were nice in face to face encounters. My sense of Taylor Hodson was that - perhaps because of the economy- they have ceased to see people as people and only see faceless shells waving resumes at them. That feeling must inspire a heady power, like being a bouncer at an exclusive club, picking the hippest, coolest people from the line merely by your whim, to let them behind the velvet rope. It's not real power, but it probably feels like it at the time. Please understand- I've reached a level of success in my career that gives me reason to be confident of my accomplishments and marketability. Usually, recruiters are happy to speak to me. Everybody's busy- believe me, I understand that- but most recruiters I have met have recognized that I am pretty much what C-level executives are looking for in an assistant, and I have the resume and references to back it up. (I'm looking for a job because I took time off for family reasons.) I'm giving Taylor Hodson Staffing two stars (rather than 1) because my sense was that they did actually have jobs, and also because, once her hackles went down, it seemed like the recruiter who stomped out to tell me she couldn't talk to me might be a good resource, if you got let in to the elite club. So good luck to you who send in your resume and get a call-- perhaps your experience with Taylor Hodson will be positive. For me-- I will remember them as the place where I was treated most roughly in my job search. It was an interesting experience. But when I get a job, I'll never to use them to help with hiring. I was called in for an interview after submitting my resume on their website. I remember going in, seeing the staff talk amongst themselves (not about work). I noticed the lack of diversity that further made me feel like I didn't have a chance in hell. Well, that feeling was spot on. I remember the dude at the front desk giving me the once over as if I was Medusa. Then after filling out the long application, I met with my recruiter who took me to the far back; away from where the staff was just taking it easy. I remember seeing someone walk across from where we were seated to make herself a cup of coffee. Short version, the recruiter sold me a dream and I haven't heard a whistle back. Nick with Taylor Hodson was quick to find me an IT position for $25/hour with a good nonprofit company that I liked... at first. However, there were issues with my paychecks; they don't have an option for direct deposit and there was major inconsistencies with when my checks would arrive in the mail. A few times the envelopes weren't even sealed, another time my paycheck arrived three weeks late and was told I wouldn't get paid at all until my missing check was found. When I tried to discuss this and other matters about my temp assignment with Nick, I was brushed aside and even laughed at. I'm thankful for the work they found me but felt disrespected and undermined towards the end of my employment with them. Don't know if it was jealousy or she was having a bad day, but will never forget how rude she was. Now that I'm older and think back I don't know how anyone would go to this agency. I was unhappy with how my job search was going. I'm a secretary/bookkeeping type, so I figured SOMEONE must want to hire me. I submitted my resume to Taylor Hodson online, but I only heard back after I discovered a friend of my husband's had worked with them (and gave them RAVE reviews), and he directly referred me to a staff member. I worked with Trish Wilk, and she's great. They then brought me in right away for a meeting. I never ended up taking ProveIt tests. Temporary Alternatives had already placed me in a short term 9-5, but they got me the following: 1. A 2 day assignment when I told them I was available December 26-27. Hey, it's money! They offered me something for one day on Christmas Eve as well, which I wasn't able to take because of another commitment. $15/hr for those. 2. A part time, flexible job filling in for a bookkeeper on maternity leave. $20/hr for those. 3. A part time job doing filing and e-mailing for a company that had a backlog. $15/hr for that. All were good workplaces. I ended up finding something permanent through another agency, but I believe Taylor Hodson when they said they were trying to place me in something permanent. I would absolutely use them again and recommend them. read more

Taylor Hodson is the third staffing agency I have worked with in NYC. They have been by far the most attentive. I sent in my resume through Craigslist and got a call back from a recruiter at TH a few days later. She brought me in and was immediately refreshingly honest. She told me her opinion on how I presented myself, and we discussed what kind of job I was really looking for. It turns out, working for a hedge fund or an investment firm is probably not the best fit for me (I really don't want to wear a suit to work every day). She said to sit tight, and she would contact me when the right job came along. About a week later, I was back at her desk discussing an administrative job at a creative start-up. She scheduled me for a interview and then began the coaching. She did a mock-interview with me in the office. We tore apart my resume and re-did the entire thing. Then we discussed how I was dressed and decided I needed to go shopping. I texted her photos from the dressing room and we decided on my interview outfit. Before my first interview, she had me on the phone for about 30 minutes prepping. Same with the second round of interviews. Needless to say, I landed the job. I could not be happier, and cannot think of a better fit for myself! I have recommended TH to many of my friends and will continue to do so. read more

I asked if the the job i applied to was still available she says she will get back to me. I emailed her a few days later and she never got back to me. One of the Best Agencies in NYC! Easy to apply, working the first week. Hours ranged from a couple to full time. I had the choice to take a job or not which allowed for flexibility in my other endeavors. Relatively short lulls between jobs, I could say that I was supporting myself solely on the money earned from my temp work. Although not necessary, I would consider obtaining a reference or recommendation before submission. Otherwise, gear up for the interview and be prepared. A conscious, in-the-moment worker is present and open for anything, ready for everything. The office team is courteous, talented and resourceful. They will open up a world of opportunity for you to gain experience from multiple job sectors; consider it paid training for the future. If you are diligent, curious, self-motivated, inventive, affable and open, you will go far. Hands down awesome experience! Started out in the temp dept. I enjoyed the benefits of not being tied down to anything. When my plans switched, the office team was supportive in creating a permanent opportunity for me. I had a fantastic experience with Taylor Hodson, and I would highly recommend their services to anyone looking to work with a placement agency. Back in 2006 I was living in Boston and planned to move to NYC; with the help of Minerva (owner) and her great team, they were able to place me in a Fortune 500 company. The interviewing process for the company I worked for took 5 interviews. Minerva and her team were great in making sure that all details of the process and next steps were clearly outlined, and I felt I had a true support in each time I went in for the next round of interviewing. I ended up staying with the company they placed me in for 3 years (before I moved to PA). I'm sad to see some poor reviews on here, and that is definitely why I wanted to take a minute to give my honest review of Taylor Hodson. So often people don't always remember to review a company or service when they are exceptional - usually it's the few that had a poor experience for whatever reason. They are very polite, if erratic, but management and some staff tend to make temping more difficult than necessary. I had an extremely positive experience with Taylor Hodson. They were responsive, eager to help and always willing to listen when I had questions. I worked with Clover and Cynthia and they were both amazing!! They helped me prep for the interviews, went over details about the different companies so I would know what to expect and were very supportive throughout the entire process. I ended up getting a job offer and it is the PERFECT position for me. It did take a few months to finally end up where I am, but you need to remember to have patience throughout the process. They are looking for opportunities that would be a good fit for you as the candidate but also for the company you are interviewing for. Not very friendly...I walked in to see if I could speak with someone. The young lady at the front desk tried very hard to mask her displeasure, but it was clear, she was not happy to see me. Met with M.T, the owner. She was hesitant about working with me because she placed my current manager years ago and they are still friends. Really? You're in business, you foolish woman. She suggested some tweaks to my resume and suggested some roles she had that would be great for me. When I told her which ones I was interested in and sent her my updated resume (Using all her suggestions), she kept telling me my formatting was off. Yet, when I sent it to her colleague, B.B. (who is REALLY out of touch and has no idea what is going on unless M.T. informs him it's okay to do so. Maybe the online stories are correct and TH IS a cult??), he saw it just fine and kept sending me the same crappy leads after altering the wording slightly. This place and its people are odd. Look elsewhere. P.S. Regarding the review below about their aversion to male admins; I, a woman, can vouch for this. M.T. TOLD ME TO MY FACE that many of her clients specifically state "no men" in their role specs. Supposedly, many high-powered male executives prefer a female assistant because they are less likely to butt heads. The rare exception is made for either a gay male assistant or an alpha straight male. I expressed my shock and told her this was blatantly sexist and that I was sure it was illegal for potential clients to even be able to submit such requests, and she just shrugged. There you go.
