Our experience with Taylor's Import Auto Service: honest, direct, knowledgeable, experienced and EXTREMELY reasonable in terms of cost. The boy drives a Subaru WRX that just hit the 100k mile mark. The check engine light was on, the engine was misfiring and going into crawl mode, and the car was basically breaking down part by part. Time to have almost everything replaced in order to have it live to 200k! (especially important since the car was finally paid off in full this month... things always seems to work out like that, ugh!) Necessary work: replacing the clutch, timing belt, engine coils, mass airflow, etc. We took it to Subaru of Santa Monica first and they jerked us around - we would've been better off buying another car than accepting the prices they quoted! Jay, the owner of Taylor's Import Auto Service, worked on the car for almost an entire week and went through everything in meticulous detail. He took it on multiple test drives and checked the hoses, sensors, computer, etc. Jay was also nice enough to drop the boy off at work each morning after he brought it in to the shop - since when do you find a mechanic who's good at what he does and is also cool enough to go out of his way do something like that?? Each time Jay did something to the car he would show the boy exactly what he did, explain why he did it, then take him out for a test drive then show him the computer readouts to see exactly why the engine was misfiring and when. We appreciated the info since neither of us are car experts. We were both impressed by Jay's know-how, patience and thoroughness and trusted him to get the job done. Long story short: Jay got the job done. The car is running faster and smoother than ever (even accelerating to the red line in every gear... if that leads to another speeding ticket then I'm going to make the husband trade in the Subaru for something nice and slow). The final price of the labor-intensive, week-long job was INSANELY REASONABLE. Jay obviously didn't charge us for all the labor he could have and for that we are very, very grateful. From our recent experience, Taylor's Import Auto Service has the knowledge, experience, honesty and integrity to do an excellent job and will take the time to do it without shadily or unnecessarily running up your bill. 5-stars, hands down. Highly recommend Jay and his services. P.S. I read T.K.'s outdated, rambling, nonsensical 3-year-old review and his 11 other reviews (the only other ones he's written) and think he comes across as a ranting, raving lunatic who doesn't know what he's talking about. It appears he's written negative reviews on a number of other auto shops while 5-star promoting one that he appears to be directly affiliated with. He sounds much more like a competing business owner/owner's friend crapping on competitors than anyone who was actually a real client of Taylor's Import Auto Service. Tsk tsk tsk, T.K. That's sketchy and probably the reason why you have 0 friends. P.P.S. To end on a positive note... thanks again for everything, Jay! Very grateful to Jay and the rest of the mechanics here. I've been ripped off by mechanics who charged me an arm and a leg - just to find out that nothing was fixed or they made things even worse. One time, after paying the bill, the car died while I was driving out of the mechanic's parking lot. Quality of work, when Jay Taylor, the owner, does it, is actually quite good. The problem is that, since opening some 12-15 years ago, he has passed off the work more and more to much less experienced mechanics. At the same time, the hourly rates have been going up and up. Labor costs are fairly high. Warranties are not very good. And, if he deems you clueless, he'll try to get away with stuff, like, e.g., double-charging labor. An example would be for the simultaneous replacement of an engine mount and a clutch, during which, the clutch removal would require the engine mount detachment anyway; nonetheless, he will charge you for the labor for both independently. This is not cool, and something that other, more honest places will not do. read more

I am new to Yelp and read the other reviews with great interest. I took my Honda to Jay Taylor for a few years for regular maintenance. I am a single mother and I am really at the mercy of a mechanic because I know nothing about engines. But I started noticing a regular pattern: Every time in Jay found some needed repair that pushed the repair bill to $300-$400, and sometimes more. He was specifically creating more costly repairs. Because my annual mileage was very low I knew it just didn't make sense to be spending so much on a very reliable car. In 1994, after believing that it wasn't a dishonest mechanic, but that I just bought a lemon. I heard about Taylors Import and sought a second opinion from Jay with my ongoing problems. All of the sudden all my problems went away. For 20 years, whenever there is a problem or need preventative maintenance before a long road-trip, I drive 35 miles to Taylors Import. There are *only* two I trust to drive my cars; my family and Jay, no one else and especially not valets. Jay has maintained 5 of my vehicles over the years, and even my domestic sport's car. He even found issues that a dealer missed and claimed to have fixed. Jay pulled the bad part out and called them out on it. Jay is honest and has very high standards. My wife and daughter are 100% comfortable leaving their cars at Taylor Imports. While sometimes his prices can be high depending on the work, I am a strong believer in you get what you pay for. Jay has only done work I authorized, and I have never felt he charged more than what the parts and service were worth. When I tried to call him out on prices, he is always willing to explain the pricing. It is true he doesn't do all the work himself, he is only one guy. I've had his mechanics work on my high-end sports cars. While some may not be certified, Jay isn't about to let one ruin his long standing reputation. If there is ever a question of concern by one of his guys, I've seen Jay jump in to make sure the work meets his standards. I'll admit nothing is ever perfect, and I have had to take a vehicle worked on back to Taylor Imports. But he is always willing to work with me and make sure I am completely satisfied. I always recommend Taylors Import every chance I get to people. Why? Because my family and I simply trust him. read more

I've been taking my Hondas to Jay since the 1980's, yep, over 30 years. My current Honda is a 1991 Accord 5-speed, and it wouldn't be running still, if I didn't have a knowledgeable mechanic like Jay to maintain it. I don't put many miles on my car in a year, less than 5000, and the current odometer reading just hit 156,000 miles. Nevertheless, I take the car for 2 oil changes a year, to have Jay check on the car and make sure the various systems are functioning as required. He has caught many items that were about to go bad, and saved me worse repair bills with his preventative approach. It's well worth it to me, as I want to keep driving my '91 5-speed as long as I can. read more

I've been taking my cars to Jay Taylor for years, and never have had a problem. Service has been great, and he don't fix what ain't broke.

Out of the various auto shops I have gone to over the years this shop is the one I feel most comfortable. The owner Jay is by far one of the most honest, kind, hardworking, and all together great guy I have met. I went in there with my 2005 a4 Audi after getting a "diagnostic" on the car from the Audi dealer saying I needed a new turbo and their price quote to replace it was outrageous. That's how I ended up at his shop he found a better price helped me at every turn even made sure I got home safely from the shop every time. The Audi ended up having recalls the dealer had been aware of and managed not to inform me about I sold it and started looking for a new car and jay has been so helpful and pretty much lifesaving to my auto hardships this last year. He is meticulous with his research and auto body work, nothing but direct and honest with all of his findings and opinions on a vehicle, and he goes above and beyond the everyday mechanic expectation he stands behind his work and clients through what most would not. I can say without a single doubt i will be a long time customer. If your looking for a great mechanic, a well done repair on your vehicle, and honest diagnostic and pricing rate for your car.
