While my husband was getting his hair cut in Missouri, his barber told him we absolutely had to stop at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. He was right. This place did not disappoint. Honestly, the hardest part was figuring out what to order because everything on the menu sounded amazing. I finally decided on the Hawaiian Delight concrete with pineapple, banana, coconut, and macadamia nuts, and it was delicious. My husband went with a root beer shake, which was completely different from mine but just as good. We both loved what we ordered. The place was packed when we arrived, although we also happened to get there during one of those quick, crazy Missouri rainstorms, so everyone was crowded underneath the eaves trying to stay dry. Our timing actually worked out perfectly. As soon as the rain stopped, we walked up and were able to order with very little wait since most of the people taking shelter had already ordered. A whole new crowd showed up right after us! Ted Drewes is definitely a busy place, but the service moves quickly, so I wouldn't let a big crowd discourage you. I'm only in Missouri for a short time, and I'm already hoping I get a chance to make it back one more time before I leave. Heard about this place from someone local to me. They said it was a must try. And it was such a must we went 2 days in a row. First day I got one of the concrete mixers on the menu. Second day I got a root beer float. Both were very delicious. The service was amazing. They were fast and the friendliest people ever. Very family friendly. Not many places to sit though. Disappointed Every Time and I'm Done Trying Since moving to St. Louis, I've heard about Ted Drewes nonstop -- it's basically a local landmark. I've now been four times, and each visit has left me more confused than the last about why this place is so beloved. Yes, the menu is massive, but despite trying four different desserts of my own (and tasting several from friends), nothing stood out. The they all consistently lacks flavor -- it's dull, forgettable, and regret-able. Customer service has been poor on nearly every visit (not surprising given how busy they often are, but still worth mentioning). The price is also ridiculous, paying nearly $9 for a dessert that feels like an overpriced letdown is a tough pill to swallow. Sure, it's cheaper if you just get plain custard, but once you add anything, the price shoots up -- and frankly, it's nowhere near worth it. My final visit was for a Reese's malt, which turned out not to have real Reese's cups, but some generic peanut butter candy, that's fine, but don't label it "Reese's." That's like ordering a Coke Icee and getting "King Cola." The malt was also barely identifiable. The spot itself is cool, fun to see a lot of people lined up to get custard, and on a nice day its great to hangout after ordering. I'm all for supporting local spots, but let's not pretend something is great just because it's a tradition. (Looking at you, Imo's.) Someone recommended that I visit Ted Drewes for custards, and boy was he right! At first, I was confused by the nomenclature: concrete versus Sunday. Turns out, everything is made out of vanilla custard and they add the goodness into it. You can make it be whatever you want it to be. Tons of flavors. This a local institution and a no-frills frozen custard shop that serves delicious frozen custard. I liked what they offered and the prices were very reasonable. I have had my fair share of good frozen custards so this wasn't anything mind blowing or such but it was on point regardless. In my three visits to St. Louis, the third visit recently was the first time I went to Ted Drewes. It was worth it. I had two concretes. You check out the menu on the side of the shop on a blackboard or you go up to the counter see the menu posting there. The menu post by the ordering and pick-up counters is very hard to read. It's not printed in a neatly organized way. First, I ordered their 'Fox Treat' concrete - "a concrete or sundae with hot fudge, raspberries and macadamia nuts." I asked them to make it with their Abaco Mocha flavor. It was da bomb. I snarfed it down. Then, I realized that I was already done with my concrete but craved more. So I went up to the counter and ordered another concrete. This time, I asked for their Lemon flavor with Blueberries. It was pretty good. On the second go, I slowed down a bit and savored it more...heheh...as I wasn't going to have it for the third time. I enjoyed my cups of their concretes. You could taste the freshness of their vanilla custard and the mixed in ingredients. Again, it wasn't anything extraordinary or special as I have had same quality good ones elsewhere and Greg's in Mundelein, IL (to me) is a bit better but still a solid punch of good tasting frozen custard. One thing I didn't like about their menu is that they only offer their regular vanilla flavor in a cone (and dipped in chocolate coating, if you want that) but otherwise, any added flavor kind is not served on a cone. On my first trip to St. Louis, I was told to come to Ted Drewes for a Concrete, a St. Louis institution. I'm very glad I came out here! Around 7:30pm on a Tuesday, I came here for a nice dessert after playing a couple rounds at Top Golf. Now they do have lot parking around but when I arrived, their lots were filled. Thankfully, there were side-streets nearby that you can park along for free. Upon stepping up to the window, I looked over the menu and was impressed at the variety of flavors and the different custard-desserts you could order! Looking over the custard flavors, I knew I wanted a mix of two flavors. The staff behind the window took my order swiftly and were very quick. They were young but not the friendliest, which is understandable as there were a ton of people here. I ended up ordering a regular-size Mint Oreo Concrete. Since it was a mixture of two flavors, there was a slight up-charge, but nothing crazy and they had to put it in a large cup. The flavors were so refreshing. The custard was cold and smooth and not overly sweet, at least in my opinion. The amount of custard in the regular-size Concrete was perfect and capped off a humid night in St. Louis perfectly! Ted Drewes is a little slice of history that serves up one of my food-kryptonites. I have come to prefer frozen custard over regular ice cream, so we stopped here while visiting St. Louis. The whole family loved it and found the flavors fresh with plenty of options. I prefer a thicker frozen dessert, so I would choose the sundae (toppings on top of the custard) over the concrete (toppings blended into the custard to make it the flavor) in the future because it seems like the blending process makes it softer and quicker to melt. The area is mixed commercial/residential off a very busy road. The parking lot is adequate for the business. There was some debris in the surrounding area, but none at the walk up space. There is a water fountain on the side. My order. Banana Split / three scoops of frozen custard topped w/ hot fudge, strawberries, pineapple, pecans & whipped cream. Outrageous yum! My son got a lemon concrete which is similar to a DQ Blizzard and he loved. Staff was helpful to new customers, smiled and was in general nice. There are other Ted Drews locations around the city. I even saw a vending machine at the airport before flying home strangely enough. It's pure Saint Louis and a must when visiting. read more

Yes. It really is that good. Everything you've heard is likely true. There's a soft serve ice cream place in Lynden, Washington I couldn't imagine being superseded by anyone, but truly, Ted Drewes did circles around my previous number one. What is so special about their frozen custard? For me, it's the right balance of creaminess, flavor, and lightness. It's not heavy feeling as you eat it and sits in your stomach. The custard makes it taste like a proper vanilla flavor. Not too sweet either. It's not icy or watery, but a very creamy consistency. It really is wonderful. We were in St. Louis on a hot summer night so the line was long, orderly, yet fast moving. We ordered our treats and enjoyed them in the parking lot. So good. It has a very old school, OG feel to it and a large menu - containing countless ice cream flavors, concretes, shakes & malts, sundaes, cones, OH MY. I ordered a concrete, which essentially is similar to a blizzard, but they blend it so nicely! No large chunks of toppings on top of the custard, perfectly blended, with still an occasional larger piece of Oreo which I much appreciated. I ordered mint Oreo to be exact and the mint was SO FRESH, so light. It was amazing. I ordered a mini which was a perfect size (comparable to a small) for I believe $3.20? Very fair price, and I'd pay at least a few times a week if I lived in the area (perhaps it is a good thing I do not as my waistline would undoubtedly expand). It was busy this night, but they were filing customers through the line and with excellent customer service. We had ordered some custard for our friends back at our hotel and the woman at the counter provided us with dry-ice so that their custard wouldn't melt. Got this right before I left St. Louis! And it was worth the visit. Just $2.00 for a mini. And the peach flavor is actually mixed with lots of real peach slices! Accepts credit cards, has a parking lot and each cup goes through the upside down spoon test. But of course, I had to test it myself...and sure enough, it sticks!
