After all these years of golfing on Oahu, Ted Makalena somehow managed to elude me until now. Finally had the chance to play with a group of friends, and I'm glad I did. The course has a relaxed, local vibe with a layout that's both forgiving and enjoyable. It was clear how popular this course is with the community. The tee boxes were busy, but even with the crowd, play moved along smoothly throughout the day, making for an enjoyable round. What also stood out was how green and well-kept the course looked. Compared to Ala Wai, which tends to show more wear, Ted Makalena was a pleasant surprise with its condition. It made the experience that much better and left me wondering why it took me so long to finally play here. read more

My husband and I have been playing at C&C for years. We are seniors and take advantage of the monthly card. I have to say over the years, Ted Makalena GC is the best municipal course and one of the best course compared to public and military courses. Overall, it is very well maintained. The staff are friendly, respectful, and will put the golfer first. I like that the starters stick to the rules so the golfers know what to expect and don't take advantage of them. If the golfer checks in earlier than their tee time, they will be told they will be called. if there is an early space opening, they will call the golfer/group. It is difficult getting early tee times, but that is because many golfers want to play at this course. keep up what you are doing at TM...best course ever! Thank you. read more

City & County puts more stress on the players now if one of your party doesn't show up and you get a warning if not all persons show up for a tee time and also can lose your privs to make future reservations if it continues. read more

Right now Ted's place is the best muni. Greens are nice. All Wai's greens are bad. Pali's greens have 10 weeds per sq ft. West Loch is digging up all over the place with temp tees and greens. Ewa is probably second best but their greens need help too. And now it's aeration season too! read more

Stunned.....absolutely stunned! That was my reaction to the conditions at Ted Makalena Golf Course. Bring your own astroturf mat...forget it. Dirt everywhere - almost non existent. As I stated in my previous review, all of the "bad stuff" attributed to this municipal golf course is clearly overstated - "fake news." What I found this past Sunday was a continued improvement to the greens, fairways and the areas surrounding the course. Is it Waialae CC....no, but the conditions at this city course are on-par with several of the commercial courses on the island. It's clearly the best conditioned municipal course on Oahu....my only wish is that the other city courses could do the same. read more

The Ted Makalena golf course is a municipal golf course. It is a flat course with sparse fairways located in the Waipahu community on a peninsula into Pearl Harbor. This 18-hole course has two tee boxes Men's and Women's that play to 5,976 yards and 5,551 yards, respectively. At current time, this course does not have a "pro shop" or restaurant. There is a golf specialty store stocked with new and "experienced" golf equipment called "Roots and Relics". The course's flat layout makes it easy to play for golfers of all-skill levels. This course was named after an American professional golfer, Theodore "Ted" Makalena, who was born and raised in Hawaii and the first Hawaii born professional to win the Hawaiian Open (now Sony Open in Hawaii) at the Waialae Country Club. This was his only professional win that occurred on October 30, 1966 where he beat professionals Billy Casper and Gay Brewer. He unfortunately died at an early age (34 years old) after a swimming accident just two years after this historic win. As you travel down Waipio Point Access Road enroute to the course, you'll see the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility. This facility is home to Pearl Harbor's "Ghost Fleet". Because this facility is a graveyard for ships, its close proximity to the sparse fairways can give you a feeling of eeriness and distraction. 8/3/2018 played 18 holes with cart $35/person. It was very busy at 11am compared to 2pm. Got stuck behind old people took 5 hours! The back holes after hole 11 the cart paths started sucking potholes galore. But the grounds were surprisingly green and well manicured, much better than Westloch. Better to go after 2pm ******* My 1st time actually playing a round of golf after taking lessons. Since I am a newbie I only could handle 9 holes and we were also walking the course without a cart. Since this is my 1st time at a municipal course I can't compare Makalena to the other county courses yet. But obviously compared to Koolina where I got my lessons it feels ghetto. But that's an unfair comparison really. You get what you pay for and it was only $13 vs $85. We went at high noon unfortunately after a 6 mile hike. Bright idea yeah but that's the only time we had. It was hot but nice breeze. The starter asked if we wanted to join a single and we declined as we were new and total dorks. He let us play as a 2-some. We also didn't have a tee time and walk ons are totally cool here. I had tried to use the Auto mated phone reservation system the day before And it said there was only a 3:00 p.m. T time. So don't trust that phone system, you can just show up. I liked that it was really low key and chill there for our 1st real game. I heard at Ala Wai everyone is watching you play. The course was pretty decent but could use more signage where the trees are or what number hole you are at. Probably my newbie problem. Also wish there were showers in the restroom. And finally, the soda machine was broken. They say no outside food or drink but I snuck 1/2 my uneaten sandwich in and ate it on the 5th hole. Nobody knows. Next time I will bring my own water, not many water fountains. read more

The best public golf course on oahu. Brand new cart path, greens are great now, fairways now have grass growing, bushes being cut down and course is getting very nice. Staff there are awesome. If you like to walk, its fairly easy. Flat. Go out and play there. You wont regret it. read more

OK, wow, golf courses. OK Makalena golf course is my favorite muni golf course. Is it a 5 star golf course... no. No muni course really is..... But does it deserve 5 stars? Yes. Here's why. This is the only muni that lets you play 9 holes from 10am. YES 10am. NO ATTITUDE. The various starters are ALL COOL. I mean, they are nice, friendly, let you out right away for the most part when they can. A long time ago, gave my son golf balls for free. These guys and gals ROCK! The course. OK let's be honest, I should tear this course up with good scoring. NO!!!!! I keep screwing up at the same holes and the first hole (because you are not warmed up), is LONG. The 7th hole par 5 is almost always into the wind and causing havoc!!!!! I keep coming back and screwing up, but I still love this place and dream of the day I shoot below par because if it's going to happen somewhere - it's here! BTW: They DO NOT OVERCHARGE for drinks. Drinks are cold too. They also have a Roots and Relics next door. OK enough. You can tell I love this course. read more

Good walking course. Relatively easy course with good greens and fairways, some in great shape. The course has been in repair and getting better, mainly certain cartpath. Great prices: weekday 9/18 - $11/$22; weekend 9/18 - $13/$26. Staff is uber friendly except at Roots & Relics. The only downfall is that there is no concession there but there is a drink machine. We are lucky that we have good courses here with very reasonable prices. read more

I'm a new golfer, female, left-handed and first time at the Makalena course. Really a beautiful course, their under some construction right now but seriously, not an issue. Everything is properly labeled if you will. Once it's complete this is going to be way more than a 5-star yelp course! Any level golfer needs to check this place out if they haven't already. I really love the bathrooms along the course. Being a girl, that really makes me feel more comfortable about hydrating along the long 18-hole course! sorry maybe a little tmi...but any female I'm sure appreciates this too! read more

A fun place and loving the upgrades and changes. My husband and his crew have frequented this course a lot and we just enjoy the fun without the high cost. What can I say it is a decent cheap municipal golf course though the greens tend a little toward the browns but it's a good place for someone like me who can't golf for s*&# haha I've come here with my friends from Japan who love to torture me (I can't play two rounds of golf in a day) and want to play as much as they can while here, good thing for other friends who I play one round with them and they take my friends to somewhere else for another round. I swear I am so bad that I'm lucky to have a hole with less than 6 or 7 strokes (usually more). I'm sure any of you that have been there after me probably found a lot of the balls that I lost heh... From what the my friends tell me this is one of the easier courses to get a tee time at (I wouldn't know too much about that since I only play when my friends come from Japan) but it does seem that way as I have been pretty lucky when they come here to play. read more

They're actually 1 to 2 holes that greens turn 90 degrees to the pin. Price: $32.00 for a round and cart on the weekend, with a golf ID card. Parking: Nothing to worry about. read more

First time playing this course that I can recall. Must hit a great drive, especially the long par 4's. Usually play other courses like West Loch and Ala Wai. Wouldn't mind playing there again when I get a chance. read more

A cow pasture. Flat not challenging greens nice shape no scenery other than Pearl Harbor bone yard. Cheap public for local old men. No restaurant/bar or even beer available so byob. No beer cart girl? Really? I saw dead cat floating in the polluted waterway that cuts across course. Best thing was stop by Honolulu Kitchen in Waipahu for huge plate lunch. This is my weekly golfing mecca. I am up with the worms for the AM morning 9 Holes and checking in @ 5:30am with the rest of the regulars.. Golf is in better condition than most people imagine. Greens have improved greatly and the amount of dirt areas have diminished. Course is not too hard but still a challenge for the weekly hacker in me. Good bang for your buck since this is a Muni course. Make sure to have your Golf ID with you. read more

Ahh yeah, Ted Makalena. The guys and I love this course. Who hasn't come out of here with a completely red towel from the dirt?! For the most part it's a relatively flat track. Most of the greens are in relatively alright condition. It can get hot out there so make sure to at least bring two bottles of water. To make a reservation, I would call in early because there are plenty of regulars. The best part for kama'aina? It's cheap because it's a muni. It's right next to Pearl Harbor and you can see a moth ball looking type fleet right off shore before you enter the parking lot. read more

Hands down the best municipal course I have played. Fairways and greens are both in great condition and well maintained (for the price). Dirt patches (mentioned in previous reviews) were not an issues at all, if you stayed on the fairway. Great course for beginners and high handicappers. I shot 20 strokes lower than I had at Pali just a week before. Wide straight fairways, no hazards or carrys to speak of. All in all it was a great course for the price. Highly recommend! read more

Went out before 7am today(Saturday) to play the back 9. Haven't played here in years and it really is a decent course! The starter is a very nice young lady and I was able to go straight to the 10th tee without waiting. If you want to play just 9 holes and you don't want to spend a lot of money, I would recommend this course. Easy to walk and the fairways and greens are pretty good for $13(weekend 9-hole rate). read more

The worst phone etiquette. What the hell Hawaii. Where is the Aloha! I am hoping service is better when we arrive. Situation- I called to book a tee time a day in advance. The answer I received- "it's to late!" "You can't call this number to book a tee time!" Me- I even said thank you. But then the long beep happened and phone call ended. After golfing here for 5 years I showed up with my international student who is living with us and attending school. They would not accept his school picture ID as proof of residence and wanted to charge him visitor rates. They also wanted to charge visitor rates to my friends son who is a junior golfer (13 yr old) because he didn't have state ID. Terrible customer service. This was the first course I ever played. We were there for twilight and the sky looked like it was on the verge of spewing rain but we were so eager to try out of so-called "skills." We got through about 5 of the 9 holes. Thank goodness I didn't have my Callaway's at that time since I think it would probably get super scratched and dirty. But the greens are okay. I swear I remember I had to hit it off of some rocks. There are like swampy areas and scary areas if you hit your ball into the wrong place. It almost looks like Jeepers Creepers will come out to get you. Get choke red dirt and your shoes and bag and clubs will probably give you that evidence. It is super cheap of course since it is a municipal so that is one plus. But I recommend any other municipal as this place is probably someplace I won't ever golf at again. Haha. read more

shhhh - secret spot! If you just want to swing the clubs this is as good as it gets. New cart paths on the front nine and a Greens Keeper that is whipping this place into shape will surely bring that dreaded crowd to this formerly known as "Maka-dirt" hidden gem of a muni track. Don't go there expecting Augusta National. This is muni golf at it's finest. The front nine is pretty easy and straight forward. On the back you need to be straight. Mangrove forests and the course perimeter will eat any way ward balls. Just remember, it's better then being at work! read more

Did you know that the Ted Makalena Golf Course is incomplete? It was built over 44 years ago and the City has yet to complete it by building the driving range portion. A driving range is an integral part of a golf course. Golfers go to the driving range to learn the game of golf; warm up prior to playing a round of golf; go to the range after playing a round to correct their flaws; try to improve their golf game incorporating game improvement changes at the range; teach their children and friends how to golf onthe driving range; and for the pure pleasure of striking the ball. Sufficient unused land is available South of the 10th fairway. Land is also available North of the Cart Barn. This area is now occupied by Grounds Maintenance. This function can be moved to the unused land East of its present location between the 8th and 9th fairways. The 9th fairway will have to be tweaked so the driving range can be placed in the area of the the 9th green. Move the green eastward and move the 9th tee box further East to where the area of the dry bed. Sufficient fill material is available in the area plus the detritus from the Grounds Maintenance location. Approximately 100,000 rounds of golf is played at this Course annually. The Ted Makalena Golf Course deserves to be completed with a driving range. read more
