I have to give a huge shout out to the guys at Ted's Automotive. I just moved to the island yesterday and rented a car to go grocery shopping. I was on my way back to return the car when my phone died and thus my only source of navigation. I had no phone charger in the car. The car was due back at the rental shop in 10 minutes and I had no idea how to get there. I saw someone outside of Ted's and so I pulled in and asked them if they could help me. It was 5pm and I'm sure they were all finishing up their day and wanting to go home, but two of the guys stopped what they were doing and came out to talk to me when I asked for help. They went out of their way to search their personal cars for a charger and offered to let me use their phone in the meantime. Because of their kindness to a stranger, I made it back to return my car rental within 5 minutes of the deadline. I will definitely be calling this place next time I have engine care needs. Went to this place to have my wheels center bored out larger. I specially asked the associate that I have 60.1mm wheel and need it bored out to 67.1mm wide and 9mm deep. This is because I want to use my original center caps and to also prevent taking out more martial than I should so that the integrity and structure of my wheel is not risk compromised. One week later, when I picked up my set of wheels and noticed that it was done incorrectly. Instead, noticed my wheel was bored to 70.1mm and about 1" deep. That's 3.1mm gap that I have to fill now!!! Now I would have to spend more money to buy hub centric rings to fill this gap. Also when they bored it they did not taper the cut out and the hub centric ring would not fit because the hub centric rings have lips to it. Also, I'm still puzzled, and I don't know how 70.1mm got thrown into the mix, but I did provide my vehicle information, for them to cross references. If this was checked, 70.1mm would not have came up. The finished product was way off. Basically more material was bored out than requested which can hinder the structure, integrity and strength of these alloy wheels. (This is what I wanted to prevent this whole time). It's very unfortunate that these wheels were so expensive and cost me about $1,400 just to get them on to my vehicle. Now, moving forward on my end, it leaves me no choice but to spend more money to purchase a hub centric ring to fill this 3.1mm gap which is very frustrating on my part because of the material lost in width and in depth so I spoke to them over the phone and asked if they can honor me a refund because this is unacceptable. They're supposed to be backed by 80 years of experience base on their website. And they took out more material then they should even when I was specific. These kind of machines job needs to be precise when installed on to a car to prevent wheel vibration if the hub bore is not perfect as numbered. Let alone I have to spend more money to fill this gap which I shouldn't have to. Now I have a ring floating in between when it should have been a clean bore with a clean fit on to my vehicle m. The associate said he was clear that he said 70.1mm and I told him 67.1mm which is only 7.1mm so maybe that's where he was confused. He added the zero on his paper so it became 70.1mm.. I was like man I should have looked at your paper but then I didn't want to insult you because you guys have a lot of experience and supposed to know what you're doing especially with 5 star rating.... regardless I told him I gave you the number specially and it was wrong and I never wanted to look at his paper because I didn't want to insult his work that's backed by 80 years of experience when I went there to pay for their service and expertise and I should not feel the need to be like, checking their work, and asking to see their invoice and what you wrote down. This is like looking over his shoulder and can be insulting. Basically I trusted in their work and because they're supposed to be the top machine shop on island but I couldn't believe it. What a nightmare for me. Instead of waiting one week to finally put the wheel on my car I had to wait another week until the hub rings arrive. Delay over delay when it should have been done right to begin with. Upsetting and frustrating. The associate also said that next time he will look it over with customer and will implement this as a lesson learn because verbal exchange is hard to understand sometimes and I told him yes, that's why it needs to be in black and white so you can always refer back to it for reference and clarification. And or have customer see the invoice and what you wrote down or have customer initial. I think if he showed me what he wrote down I would have corrected that mistake and all then wouldn't have happened but man, I'm wondering why me? After 80 years why me? Did they not check with customers prior to doing jobs or they have been lucky all this time for 80 years. How does people do it. Obviously if you look at their ratings, maybe people are happy and they're a 5 star company. In good faith as a result of this error they offered me a $75 refund and even said that they undercharged me to begin with. What kind of twisted money grab statement is that? Man.. if anything, they should understand the fact that young people will keep coming back for their business and the fact that they are in business for over 80 years they will be ok. What's the big deal of issuing a refund for an obvious mistake that they caused. They'll make their money back like nothing.... oh on a side note. I taped up my wheels to prevent curb scratches on the machine and you would think, if a customer tape up their wheels, it means that they don't watch scratched on them and it's on valid to them. But no...... the tapes were scratched off ins some areas so that means that the wheels were moved around between hard surface to hard surface scratches my rim. read more

My 1927 Ford Speedway with a Pinto 2.3 Motor experienced multiple problems with my heads, brought it in to Ted's and worked with Craig on resolving my issues. He found that my rebuilt heads that I purchased, incorrect valve length used, so there was coil binding that resulted in all bad valve seals, one bent valve, cam was too big for the street. So all issues were discussed & corrected, machine work performed. I reinstalled the heads a few days ago, & 1st run on the street today, and wow, what a difference! I am ecstatic because the motor sounds amazing! I can't say enough about Ted's. They are a professional machine shop who cares about their customer's and ensures that they are providing the best services. If you are looking to do machine work on your motor, look no further, Ted's is where you want to take your ride. Note: Until now, I never stepped foot in Ted's, & I am not getting a discount to post this review, this is my honest evaluation of this outstanding company! Wish I could give less than one star! First, back in July, I dropped an engine block to get decked and cam bearings installed and they asked if it was a rush job. (Maybe that's where I went wrong) I said no, and the guy (can't remember his name) said that it would be done in a few days. My parents were here on vacation, so it was pushed to the back of my mind. two weeks later, I still hadn't gotten a call, so i call them up to see what was taking so long. They tell me that it was put to the side and that they had been swamped then tell me that it'll be done by noon the next day. I call back at 1pm the next day and the cam bearing install still hadn't been done. I was told that the one person that does cam bearings was at lunch and it would be done by 3pm. I go to pick up the block after they call me that it's done. After I get home, I realize that the hot tank hadn't been done and that the cam bearings had scratches and dents. They looked like that ones I wanted replaced. i call them back to tell them that the bearings look terrible and I get told that that's the way they are supposed to look. Fast forward to yesterday (2/26/13), I take my car in to get the engine checked out. Today I go to my mechanic and he has the entire engine disassembled and points out that the #6 cylinder wall is cracked forcing him to replace the block. Had Ted's Automotive actually done a good job, they would have notice the crack and notified me. Rather than not make the $320 that it cost me to have the work done, they just let it slide and now I have to replace the block costing at least twice that much. Please do yourself a favor and do not go to Ted's Automotive Machine Shop! Your bank account will thank you. read more

Took a basket case motor over there dealt with Chad the whole time. Chad has a great friendly attitude! They were very patient with me. I didn't have The money to pay right Away I was able to make payments. I had issues with the rebuilt engine turns out their ex employee kind of rush things but they resolved the issue right away! Now I'm loving my brand new motor that has about 140 miles on it I'm babying this thing because it's known to be very temperamental :) So happy to hear this thing fire up in the morning! I don't know how this shop has been in business for so long. Dropped off an engine to have cam bearings installed. These retards not only screwed up my cam, they screwed up my new bearings by removing material from the NEW bearings to make the cam fit. I didn't realize it until after the cam break in period. So I pulled the engine and sent it back to them. They wanted to charge me double the second time. Fuck these guys. By far the worst machinest and no knowledge staff. Negative 5 stars!!!! read more

This past April I took the the toasted cylinder to a Honda XR650L project bike to rebore for an oversize piston. What can I say? The guy I talked to was informed and friendly, they did the job (and even cleaned off the old base gasket without my asking!), and now I've got strong-running bike to rip around on. Brought in a nissan maxima block to be tore down, machined and cleaned, and reassembled with 192K miles. Chad worked a great deal including cylinder heads he had on the shelf. I put my trust in the guys at teds and what a mistake, first off the told me it was going to coat less than half what they ended up charging me and was in for a big shock when the work was supposedly done. I had them ballence and blueprint a big block chevy motor, they told me that the block was decked and the heads were milled and charged me accordingly . they put in all the parts I already had, rings pistons cam shaft and crank, all the parts were already mine and new, the total charge was all labor and came out to $3,000 I had no choice but to pay the bill to get my motor, I was short $400 and he said I could pay him later, after running the motor less than an hour it blew, total melt down,, I took the motor apart to find that some of the washers for the ARP rod bolts were not even installed. the head still had the factory marking stamp on the head surface so it was never milled, and the block was not decked like I had been told, I had also had them put in aluminum rods and they told me that they would have to special machine the block to get the rids to clear the block,, NOT true,, this block already had factory relief cuts in it and did not require machining, but I was charged for it anyway..FRAUD. when I tried to talk to craig at teds about this in a calm manner all wanted to do was get in my face and ask if I paid the other $400. asked me if I paid for it,, the answer is yes I over paid for work that was never done. and then told me to get the F out of there, so if you as a customer likes to be treated like this, help your self and go to teds to have work done or told you it will be done, and then when you show him it wasn't you will be treated like you wouldn't treat your worst enemy, teds took almost $3,000 from me for work that was never don't and the motor only lasted about an hour and blew, its wasted and they will not do the right thing, and no I didn't get my money back, I am putting to gather a class action law suit against them at this time so if anyone has had similar treatment from teds machine shop, please contact me at tneptune1@aol.com read more

I sure wish I had read this before I took my boat engine to them to rebuild. I got the same experience as the other guy. they told me two weeks and it took two months. I had an idea of what it would cost from my mechanic who regrets sending me to them for the rebuild. after taking my engine and keeping it a month, the new number is 50% higher. Then they need money for the parts, but the number keeps changing even though it is three times what the kit is available for on line at a RETAIL cost. two weeks from that point turns into another month. When they get the engine, I asked them if they warranty their work and they tell me that they stand behind their work. I should have caught the non-answer as they are very good at that. Now that it is finished and they want the balance it is "Oh no. We never warranty marine engines. What if you start jumping waves." Seriously? Even if i could get a twin engine 15,000 pound boat to jump a wave, that kind of stuff ruins engines??? i asked him if they rebuilt the engine to Mercruiser specifications. They told me they could never give a warranty for a boat engine. Why didn't you tell me that two months ago if it is such an absolute thing. I asked if my 7.4 liter Mercruiser engine that is basically a GM 454 V8 beast isn't the equivalent of a dragster engine and able to handle extreme loads. Chad tells me, "Oh no, that isn't a dragster engine." But today he says, "See we can't warranty those engines because they are just like dragster engines." I wasted the whole summer with my kids out of school waiting for them to finish this motor and then I get a run around when they want paid about the lack of putting anything in writing. I am having my engine held hostage when they haven't tested it (that would take too much time), it has no warranty, cost 50% more and took four times the time to fix. If you want to know how this feels, I suggest you take your engine there too. read more
