I grew up in the NYC/NJ metro area and for me, pizza is an essential food. Ted's pizza is like nothing like you've ever had. It's really a hybrid somewhere between a flatbread and a traditional thin crust pizza. I agree with a previous review of "you either hate it or love it". Surprisingly, I love it. It's just a great bite of sauce, cheese and a unique crust that is addictive and delicious. Don't walk away when you first go in to get your pizza. Ted's isn't in the "dive" category- it's a little below that. But, it really is clean, they take Covid seriously and they are very friendly. I've lived in Rutland for more than 40 years and it really hasn't changed (including the furniture!). All credit cards are accepted. If you're not from the area, give it a try. Extra cheese is a must and if you like your pepperoni spicy, order that as well. It is indeed an experience and hopefully one you'll love. Insider tip, they open at 4, order early, they get really busy especially on Friday. If the line is busy, just try again. read more

Simple, tomato-forward and perfectly balanced sauce. Pepperoni that crisps and curls and a cheese blend that melts and stretches just so. Locals rave about it. But everyone else on the planet would find that sentiment utterly baffling. Seriously. Go to any other review site and you'll see that those giving the place a superb rating either are from Rutland, or grew up there. Ted's has been around for a dog's age, and it shows. Yes, appearances can be deceiving, but in Ted's case, it's pretty indicative of the quality of the food that for the life of me cannot conceivably be called pizza. The 'pizza' is barely a step above the frozen kind you'd get in a supermarket. The sauce is too oniony and chunky, the cheese oily (unless burnt), the dough gets mushy in your mouth like biscuit flour. Plus, it's not as much a bargain as you'd expect, and takes forever to get your food. And for some unknown reason is that the pizza is cut in rectangles. Round pizza, cut into rectangles. So you get a longish slice from the center, and then mostly crust on the edges. I spent the latter part of my childhood in Rutland, and had their pizza a handful of times over the years. I thought it was some cruel joke that this was the place EVERYONE loved. Yes, it is a traditional pizza joint, because the quality remained consistently awful for years. If you're acquainted with real pizza from New York, or even Chicago or Europe, Ted's is just some weird anomaly that by rights shouldn't be nearly as popular as it is. I guess you could chalk it up to people not knowing from good pizza, although some friends of mine who've move away still recall the place fondly. Perhaps there's some secret pizza that's served only to locals. I don't get it. Suffice it to say, there's no pizza on Earth like Ted's. Thank god. read more

I'm a local....born and raised in Rutland and I still don't get the good reviews about Ted's. Seriously, I don't. I have some local family members who just rave about it and then they're others who think it tastes like canned, unflavored sauce on cardboard......and I'm one of them. As other "old time" Rutland restaurants and land marks Ted's has been in Rutland it seems like an eternity! I cannot remember a time in my lifetime thst Ted's wasn't there. It had been such a very long time since I had gitten a Teds pizza that when I finally got it I absolutely could not wait to sit down and enjoy, what i had remembered to be the BEST PIZZA in town! Well when I called to make an order during the starting back up of the city from COVID-19....I was informed that their menu ONLY HAD PIZZA...no grinders or special dishes. That was fine. I always loved their pizza. Well I was a bit disappointed as the pizza just want what I remembered it to be. And the service either! Not real friendly and the pizza just wasn't what it used to be that I had remembered. Not enough sauce...spices weren't quite there. Just wasn't what I had waited for. Sorry Teds! read more

It's a shame that I've been to Rutland so often and yet never known that this place existed. Had I been aware of how good it was, sooner, I would have eaten there every time I visited. Yes, the place was crowded, but that's to be expected, considering its popularity. And the pizza was well worth the wait. There is some mention in certain other reviews about the rectangle slices, but my table was asked, when ordering, if we wanted it cut that way or in the traditional fashion. So I don't much think those complaints were warranted. Aside from the delicious pizza, the staff was friendly and the garlic bread that we ordered was as good as the rest of the meal. Each bite I hoped it would get better but it just tasted like a frozen pizza that had been over microwaved. The crust tasted like an old biscuit and everything else was the cheapest ingredients you can get. It was super expensive and I can't believe how many people were in there waiting for a pizza. I expected it to at least be edible. We threw half of it away and cooked something else for dinner. read more

I live in NYC which supposedly has some of the best pizza in the world. I could eat all the pizza in NYC and never find a slice that tastes as good as Ted's. It's definitely a local joint, but a diamond in the rough. Each pie is custom made, just for you. The sauce and dough are made fresh daily and if you're turned off by the rectangle shaped slices, GET OVER IT! The best part about this pie is the way the pepperoni curls up and gets a little crispy! I do not understand the bad reviews at all. I was in the military and traveled all over the world, and I had pizza wherever I could. Ted's Pizza is the best pizza I have ever tasted! Gordon Ramsey would even say so! Anyone who says otherwise has mental issues. read more

Ted's is a Rutland City institution. My four sisters and I were lucky enough to live just around the corner from Ted's and grew up eating their pizza. Now that we are all adults and living elsewhere, a Ted's pepperoni and mushroom pizza is the first thing on all our lists to have whenever we're back home for a visit. I've never heard anyone properly describe just what it is that makes Ted's pizza so special. To this day I don't know why it's so good. It's really not like pizza you'll find anywhere else. But we all hope that Ted's stays right where it is and keeps on making their pizzas for a long time to come. We love the Romeos and we love Ted's! read more

Worst pizza I've ever had. Terrible sauce, flavorless boring crust, fake cheese that looks worse than a frozen pizza, and canned mushrooms for crying out loud. How this is considered Rutland's best is beyond me. I waited seven years living here to finally try it (because their ordering system is insane), and I will never be back. First of all, let me explain that Ted's has been a family owned institution in Rutland since 1958 (a monumental feat for any restaurant), and from what I've heard the pizza has not changed. Rutland has no foreseeable shortage of pizza shops, and many of them are good and have some unique qualities to them... but I'd be willing to bet that few are as busy as Ted's. This is not your ordinary pizza shop... if you're out looking for high end table service or metropolitan ambiance you won't find it here. Instead you'll walk into a room that is part diner, part dining room at your grandmother's. Next you'll probably notice the long line of people picking up their takeout... this place does so much takeout, if you don't get your phone order in early you'll only get a busy signal. They must have a quota of pizzas they make every night and that's it. No delivery, either. But all this is okay... because the pizza is simple, consistent, affordable and delicious. It is what it isn't... it isn't overly spicy or exotic, it isn't round, it isn't pretentious, it's definitely not overly greasy... and best of all, it isn't rushed. It is unique. Some may say it's over-hyped, but I think it's just the opposite. It isn't Ted's trying to sound their own horn as to how great this pizza is, it's their legions of loyal customers. And aside from all the other pizza shops out there with corporate advertising, crazy logos and coupons and specials and speedy delivery, isn't the best measure of how good a place is... if the customers keep coming back? Call them early, get in line, and enjoy this real taste of Rutland. read more

Place has terrible service. Ordered a pizza for pickup, the guy told me 50 mins then hung up the phone. I didn't even get the chance to give him a name. I walk in 50 mins later, and I'm told they don't have my pizza anywhere. Last time I'll make the teds choice! read more

I was looking specifically for a little hole-in-the-wall type of place, the kind that caters to the locals and has food that you eat and can't wait for the next time. Well. I got one out of two. Ted's is a little tiny family pizza joint and they greet regulars by name. I'll admit that I selected the place based on reviews and photos of their pizzas and they looked amazing. I'm a sucker for a thick, chewy soft pizza dough and a lot of cheese. What I got was a thin, crispy cracker-style crust. Still got plenty of cheese and toppings but the crust was a disappointment. I think, based on seeing some of the other pizzas being served, that they had two or three different pizza crusts available, but there was nothing to indicate that on the menu. I guess you gotta be one of those regulars to know. Nevertheless I give Ted's three stars for now until I can go back and find the secret behind the crust.
