I was at the Louisville Ballet's spring recital for their youth programs this afternoon. Probably…read more700 parents, grandparents, siblings and other family and friends come to see 4 to 18 year old dancers perform, most sporting flower bouquets for "Their" dancer. There is some street parking but the garage is located directly behind the theater with a catwalk on the second level that takes you directly into the theater. I equated the 3-4 year old little girl dance routines to t-ball for little boys. Most don't have a clue about their routine but still get dressed up, head out on stage and dance to their hearts content. Like T-ball it's pretty funny. Then the older girls who probably started out as toddlers and have persevered through years of practice are pretty impressive. Costumes are fun, good music and an excited audience to see your person on stage at the Brown theater. Viewing the building itself is worth a visit. They typically have a bar or two set up but not for this matinee. They were selling food, chips, candy, sodas and bottled water, hot pretzels, hot dogs, etc. But what I don't get is you can't take the food inside the theater. So why sell it? Drinks are allowed inside the theater. Just a cool theater, fun afternoon for family and the dancers.

We admired the many beautiful sparkling light fixtures, the detailed millwork, the painted murals, and velvet curtains. We did notice peeling ceiling paint, extremely steep stairs, and narrow theater seats which were quite cramped and uncomfortable. The show was spectacularly entertaining and the singers and band were very talented. We would enjoy returning for other performances at this venue.

Each door bears a sign stating that racism, homophobia and the like will not be tolerated in the establishment, leaving no room for doubt. I was so impressed and encouraged by that immediate assurance that this place shares our values. It takes bravery to lead with a stance that will likely drive some business away in order to stand on principles and I admire it. There isn't much seating. There is a nice stage with pro sound and lighting. Most of the area in front of the stage is open floor. Some interesting bench style seating on either side of the space and a few tables and chairs in the back. Drinks are not cheap by any means but competitive with other similar venues in the area. No food is served but they did have a popcorn machine going. Service was fair for a large crowd. You have to have an open mind to attend Portal. They were holding a "furry rave" there directly after the concert and at a point the venue began to fill up with young people dressed in some interesting and elaborate costumes of that variety. So you should be prepared to share space with people in alternative lifestyles. I love that this establishment provides a safe space for people that some don't understand or accept. Portal hosts lots of cool events like yoga classes, writer's nights, art shows etc. We will definitely go back. It's easier for me to show you than explain it so please refer to accompanying photos.

Membership totals are also limited to ensure players can play without the hassle of long waits. Courts are offered for beginner to advanced levels. During regular hours, players place their paddles court side to reserve the next game. The atmosphere is very social. Facility felt clean. Upstairs is a large room for warm ups, stretching, and tables for food and refreshments. Visitors welcomed and no entry fee. Plenty of parking in the shared shopping center.

They had scheduled tours for when the bride and groom were having their "first touch" and reading prayers... so there were people talking over them and getting in the way of the PAID photographer and videographer. And they didn't listen when told to lower their voices. Extremely rude and the fact that they didn't tell anyone they were scheduling random people to come in and look while a wedding was taking place was just really unprofessional. It made the bride and groom very upset and honestly made me quite upset too. I understand it's also a shared business space but I saw no one from the other businesses get in the way more than the actual event people. And then they only have five approved caterers. Which makes sense when you under the industry... but why they chose those specific caterers made no sense because of the lack of communication with them was just awful. And one of the caterers never even got back with us after an inquiry. And the one caterer we went with had probably the worst food I've eaten. Like I've had better cafeteria food. And they wouldn't approve of any other vendors, even if they were reputable and had a full staff. Terrible communication. Ridiculous standards. Would never recommend this spot to anyone.

There are several businesses here as well so it is a great creative space for start ups, established companies, or artistic cooperatives. It was easy to find the location, there was ample parking, everything was clean, well-lit, and there was enough bathrooms. Also, as someone who frequently helps disabled people around it was nice that everything was easy to get to and accessible for humans of all abilities. Good work, Kaela.
