We were interested in many moonshines and were able to purchase a couple jars, mini bottles, and mason jar lids that have a pouring spout. We also took home some of the delicious jams. This should be on your list of must stop places if you're in the area.

It has to be because this backward county didn't legalize alcohol sale and manufacture until 2016! Believe it or not. And it's a fairly large scale operation judging by the size of the tanks. I tried a flight of 4 or 5 whiskies, bourbons, and a moonshine. The pours were adequate, neither too small nor too big. Honestly, none of them were great but they were all acceptable except the moonshine. Moonshine in my opinion is just unfinished whiskey, suitable only as a gift to bring home to Northerners for their amusement. And ridiculous concoctions like peanut butter whisky - artificially flavored. It tastes as weird as it sounds - avoid! My rating is based more on the overall experience than the actual whiskies. I enjoyed talking with the bartender, then taking my flight off to a table and relaxing for a while in the quiet and out of the heat. I bought a couple of airplane-size bottles and a cool tee shirt. They had heard good things about SKD but hadn't visited or sampled their products. But today was the day. Let me touch on the tour - wow. The tour was expected to be about an hour but we stayed at least two, maybe a bit more. Our guide - Luther, is a hell of a nice fella. Taught us a lot. He told us how he's been friends with several of the other since school days and you can tell he really loves this place. This post would be too long to go over every great thing about the tour and sampling - so go and see for yourself. The products: Folks I'm not a big drinker. But I will say this. I came out buying, a bottle of their Vodka, two bottles of bourbon, and two bottles of flavored shine. I will also say I love each and every shine flavor and it was hard to choose just two. The location: new, very clean, and great looking. Inside and out. Lastly the staff: Again Luther was a great fella. The counter girls were crazy friendly and nice and then the owner Junior was just so nice and personable. Folks come here, bring your friends, and have a great time. Upon approach, the property itself is visible from the highway and was impressive, almost to the point of breathtaking. Justing seeing this was simple reminder on why doing this tour was a must for me. The welcome center was just that, welcoming! It was clean, modern and displayed history of Nearest Green's lineage, facts about the art of distilling, along with display cases filled with tools from the original distillery/farm. There was also a display case for their world-renowned Uncle Nearest Tennessee Whiskey. All the staff I encountered were kind and welcoming. The tour guide for my tour was Terrell Johnson and he was phenomenal! It was obvious from the beginning, that he thoroughly enjoys his job; he was funny, personable, and very knowledgeable. He shared that he's been at the distillery for the past 5 years and has received lots of recognition for outstanding work as a tour guide. The entire property exceeds 450 acres which is massive. That said, the tour only covered a small portion of the property. We did see one of the barrel houses which actually contained barrels of whiskey that were in the aging process. We were also able to see the onsite bottling area which was in operation at the time. Because it was staffed and operational, pictures and video were not allowed. Towards the end of the tour we did a tasting which was included with the tour. During this time, we also got to label our own bottle of Uncle Nearest 1856 to take home with us. Terrell encouraged us to do something unique with the label to ensure it stood out from the bottles that can be purchased at most liquor stores. After completing the tasting, we went back to the welcome enter which and the opportunity to peruse the store which contained numerous Uncle Nearest branded merchandise as well as numerous bottles of the various types of Uncle Nearest whiskey. The unique part about this is they have a few that can only be purchased there which was a nice treat. Lastly, their bar, Humble Baron, is located at the rear of the welcome center space. Unfortunately, I went on a Thursday afternoon and the bar is only open on the weekend. Needless to say, I will make a return visit just experience a pour or two in their bar. His distillery is about an hour and a half from Nashville. Once you're out of the city, it's a beautiful drive, but there is not much between the two. Except of course, Uncle Nearest. We'll get back to that in another review. I don't know what I was expecting, but this place definitely exceeded my expectations. They have a pretty largely laid out property. We parked across the street and a lot and had to walk over and bus back. Walking in. We were slightly early for the next tour time, so we went to there establishment aptly named Happy Hour, and pre-gamed. One thing you can learn in the lobby is that Jack Daniels was not a tall man. In fact, he was quite short, though it would seem that his presence exceeded his physical height greatly. The tour started us on a bus driving us to the top of a hill close to one of their warehouses and we walked our way down to see parts of the property before we got into some more buildings. Our guide, Danna, was excellent! A former navy instructor, she was both incredibly knowledgeable about the business and very passionate about working their and teaching the history of the distillery. On the way down we had a stop at a drink trailer. And had our tour beverages. We also got to see some of what they were doing out there making charcoal for their distilling process. As we moseyed along further, drinks in hand, we learned about the history. We passed by a really old fire brigade station. And landed in a cabin that had a lot of interesting pictures in it and quite a bit of history. I won't go word for word in my review, then you would have no reason to visit. I'll just add some tidbits as we go. Unbeknownst to myself and my companions, Uncle Nearest and Jack Daniels are very closely related. In fact, Jack's first master distiller was Nathan "Nearest" Green, and Jack Daniel distillery has continuously employed members of the nearest family ever since. Their relationship was not only unique, but that Bond has not broken since this distillery was put in place. Very cool things I did not know, and there's plenty more of that. If you go on the tour. Treat yoself to some knowledge. We then wandered through the distilling area, and barrel House. Our tour ended at The tasting area, where we got to try a number of things. Now. Jack Daniels, like Uncle nearest, is in a dry county and they can't serve things outright. So they have to come up with ways to do it and stay within the laws. So you might notice in my pictures that the tastings have just a wee bit in each glass. If you want more, you'll have to go to the bottle shop. And if you want to buy a barrel, or anything else, you have to go to the hardware shop. When you go on the tour you'll understand what that means and why it's important. At the conclusion of the tour, you can go to the happy hour bar, the bottle shop, or the hardware store. There's a shuttle to take you wherever you want to go on the property or back to your parking spot. It's a very interesting and enlightening tour. We weren't aware how much history was here and all the things we didn't know yet. Very cool tour. Highly recommend going!

Honestly we loved the merlot and cab they had. Now it's not your typical Cali red wine but I'll tell you this wine maker knows what he is doing. Great aromas, wonderful taste on the palate. It's interesting how they say that the area is known for sweet wine drinkers, because they really make a decent "dry" wine. The staff is awesome! Super friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of room at the tasting bar to saddle up and not feel crowded. I definitely recommend that you don't pass this gem up!
