I was looking for world journal bookstore; however, it wasn't there anymore, but tennistopia was there? Wow, that was nice surprise for me as the only real tennis store I have been to in the past 10 yrs is holabird in baltimore. I had to check out tennistopia, and I do remember their ads on the back of tennis magazines like 6 or 7 yrs ago. First impression, it's clean, very modern, bright, and organized. I like the looks of it. No one came up to me and harass me, I like that. Quickly I realized they do not carry a lot of products or brands. I noticed they mostly carry babolat and wilson racquets, some head and prince. If I was looking for PK, volkl, asics, gamma racquets, I would be out of luck here. Still for the major brands, they have mostly the pro series. Shoes wise, the same thing there as well, mostly player's model. I don't buy crazy overpriced nylon shirts and shorts, so I did not noticed much of their selections. What I like is that this store is a fresh breeze of air from holabird, friendly staff, well organize. They don't have a crazy owner who runs up to me and harass me like holabird. They have a decent lot of used racquet for sale. Their sales selection have really steep discount. What I am not a fan of is the limited selections on racquet and shoes models. Their stringing price is pretty high. Maybe it's the rich MoCo where $22 for labor is the norm, compared to us poor baltimorean who are expecting $12-16. Good thing I string my own... read more

I just got a stringing service done here for my 1 tennis racquet. I got a hybrid set up with Wilson NXT and RPM Blast strings and I paid $57. I'm not a confrontational person, so when the total price was shown to me in the store I thought it was high, but didn't want to cause a fuss. After talking to some friends and looking online, it was evident that I was severely overcharged. RnJ sports in Rockville/Bethesda and other places that do stringing services are at most $40 including the strings. When I came to pick up my racquet (which was ready 4 days later) and asked why the price was so high they just said that's just the price sorry. The price I paid should be for two racquets especially since I'm buying each string at $27 per set. Tennis Warehouse sells a full set online of Wilson NXT and RPM Blast for $20 each, which if I got both I could do two racquets. I hope others learn from my mistake and shop around before coming here and doing business. I feel so scammed and annoyed with myself. I'll never come to this place again that's for sure. read more

Great experience went in for a tennis bag, awesome selection better than Dick's that's for sure. Marco was excellent as helping us find the right bag for our needs. We needed a second racket, and happily the exact one we needed was there on sale. The stringing would be available next day. I couldn't have had better service. The staff had zero interest in providing any sort of customer service. My husband was looking at racquets. Although we wanted to look a bit first, even after more than fifteen minutes of looking at specs on handles, no one checked on us, no one offered any sort of advice. Even though the stringer was in the store , the clerk said it would take three days to string a new racquet. What kind of sales incentive is that? If someone's buying a new racquet from you, string the racquet there and then. Have a little demo area where your customer can see if they're happy with it. Will never go back. read more

Shady tactics, owner publicly accuses bad reviewers of lying, overpriced more than anywhere else. If you read other reviews these are common themes. Other common themes of bad business are not telling customers with every order that returns are not excepted, only exchange or store credit (a trap). The excuse is always, as you can read other reviews, is there are signs. The owner also argues with anyone who post 3 star reviews or under on Yelp and Google. The owner insinuates everyone with a bad review is lying, which is very childish and small. When many people say the same things and are accused of lying it points to the nature of the "used car salesman" tactics. Go anywhere else and get better prices/honest business. On top of it all, all the expensive Nike and Adidas clothes is marked up even higher when they remove Nike's price and add their own sticker atop. Everything in the store is marked up and is usually 1.5-2 times anywhere else. Go anywhere else. read more

Tennis Topia and manager Hunter deserve 5+ rating for customer service and selection. I am a pickleball player and Tennis Topia has an extensive selection of all price range pickleball paddles. They have a very generous demo policy that allows you to rent several paddles during a 7 day ( or less) period, thus giving the customer a excellent chance to try out top rated paddles. They have the biggest selection in the area and it was worth the drive from McLean, VA. They also have many lines of Pickelball/ tennis accessories. We bought a high end paddle, paddle cover, and visor and will be coming back to buy more in the future. read more

Very poor experience at its web site. I was looking for tennis balls, but not only its selection is limited, but also there is limit of two cans for each persons. It's web site is not user friendly too, since it doesn't show shipping cost until very end and very hard to find out how much customer needs to pay. Gift card is hard to use (not sure it is intentionally making it hard to use so customers cannot use it) and I had to call shop to resolve the issue. Got few rackets few months ago and got strung there. It was a good experience. I went back to get restrung one of the racket and I specifically told them that I need Head - Synthetic - BLACK and 54lb. When I picked up it is white color and when I asked the guy about why is not in black, instead of trying to find the issue how it happened, he pulled my purchases and told me that you got white in the past, hinting that what is the problem now with WHITE. Fantastic shop with a wide range of quality gear and knowledgeable staff. After a two decade hiatus, I decided to pick up tennis last year and start teaching my young kids. Tennis Topia has been a big part of that journey, meeting all my equipment needs along the way. The staff's passion for the game is contagious, and after shopping here, I'm always looking forward to hitting the court. My only complaints: 1) sometimes, the service is "too" personalized. I've gone through three different string setups, and at each change, the store staff has said the prior strings (recommended by someone else) were sub-optimal in some way. They listened and patiently guided me through the process and had a new racket ready and strung for me upon my arrival. I also got there and ended up buying a pair of shoes. Tennis Topia has gone to hell after the recent ownership change. The staff is totally out of control. The The racket stringer told me to get out the hell out of the store because he didn't like a Pickleball idea for kids that I had.. Assistant manager completely ignored me, The manager sold me a paddle after recommending me to it and hitting hitting with me on they're totally useless mini Pickleball Court. but you could not test the paddle for groundstrokes or serves. After trying to paddle.the $200 paddle on a real court it was awful. I took the paddle back and the manager Hunter refused to give me any money or store credit back.. when is the new owners did email me and say he would give me some credit if I brought the paddle back. However, I was so upset with Hunter I gave the paddle to someone else. The new owners seem reasonable, but if I were them, I would totally retrain Hunter and the system manager or fire them until I get word that that is happened I would never go in the shop again and I would never recommend everybody go in there. I have recommended several people go there now I recommend know when I absolutely tell them do not go there. I never tell people to go to Pickleballerz in Chantilly which is a little bit further away, but they have Pickleball courts and let you try out the paddles for nothing. read more

My husband and I each checked out 2 paddles last week and paid the $15 deposit for each of us. We were advised that these are paddles that they keep in stock. Today we went back to purchase paddles - neither one of the ones that I was interested in was in stock. We were advised that "the manager will be back in an hour and I can call you about whether we can get them." We were offered other paddles - and many were more expensive. We asked for our $15 demo fee back as we felt that checking out paddles that were not available was unreasonable. We were again advised that Hunter would be back in an hour. We saw that there are many many paddles on the "demo" rack - but many fewer paddles on the wall. We went home and called and asked to speak to Hunter. The call was answered by the young woman who helped us in the store. I asked to speak to Hunter - she put me on hold then came back and said that she explained the situation to Hunter who told her to tell us that he could order the paddles that we wanted and they would be in for us to pick up in 1-2 weeks. I again explained that we wanted our demo fee back as the paddles we wanted were not available and she said "well we sell a lot of paddles". I was really disappointed as we had heard good things about the store. It seems like a case of "bait and switch" and we will not be going back. read more

IF you like Babolat or Nike this place is ...fine. If you play with Prince, Head, Völkl etc you're out of luck and if you wear KSwiss, Fila, Adidas, Lole, Lotto, or Puma. First, I was greeted in a lackluster way, and when I mentioned I had a Groupon (meant to drive in new business) I was discarded. That and it wasn't valid on Babolat or balls, or sale items. Sale I understand. When I saw and was told it wasn't valid on Babolat I didn't really care, given I am anti-Babolat... personal preference, but when that's the majority of your stock... that's a bit of an issue. Now, I tend to drop at least $150 when I'm shopping for tennis, so I tend to look for a little more customer service than getting ignored... I was looking to get two KSwiss tennis skirts, try an Adidas dress, and a Head Tour Team combo bag to go with my racquet and maybe some grips. That's over 100 right there... so after I even make eye contact with a sales person going into the dressing room, there was no questions of how did stuff work out for me, was size, etc. (Full disclosure I play with the Head Graphene Radical MP and am planning on getting one or two dupes, had this place been better they might have had that business.) They were more interested in watching the BNP Paribas Open replay. Not at all what I expect from a retail organization. I've worked retail and If I ignored a customer like I was, I would have been reprimanded. I was really wanting to like this store. I miss my tennis store in Seattle, and the only one I've found in DC has a fantastic racquet selection, good grips and other like accessories and amazing staff, but because of the size doesn't have much clothing. I'll take the racquet selection any day. So I'll be going back to Tennis Zone in DC. Tennis Topia didn't even have the current Head Graphene models. They had the Instinct MP, but that was the only up to date higher end model of a non Babolat and some better Wilson that I saw. Frankly CitySports had better selection. They only have Wilson and Babolat bags and some random gaudy others. VERY disappointing. Their website says they carry Adidas, Fila, and KSwiss, of which I saw none. The stock was sparse for the space, as if they were trying to clear all inventory. Even the tennis gifts were poor, and poorly presented. Most of the Nike line was Maria Sharapova, and fits very oddly. (I'm not a hard fit, I'm about a 2-4 and 5'6'') If your name is Tennis Topia and you say you have these brands, I'd expect to find them in store. After trying on A LOT of skirts and dresses, as I wanted to spend this thing and never go back, I finally walked a way with a skirt I like, but am not excited about. The size selection wasn't good at all mostly Small-Longs, and larges I don't think one item had a complete size run of Small-Large. The feeling I got is this store is geared towards taking the money off of suburban moms who "play" tennis. read more

This is the place to go when you need anything tennis related! Reasonable prices, some may think it is expensive but... like with anything 'you gotta pay to play' and you get what you pay for! Every employee is willing to help out with anything and they answer any questions you may have. This is a generally well-run shop. The employees are fairly knowledgeable and very willing to provide assistance. This is a top notch store. Service is great and friendly. You get very high quality stringing jobs at this store with the best machines available. The selection of clothes, shoes, and racquets is very good considering the small size of the shop. Biggest negative is the prices, but it's somewhat understandable as they are a brick and mortar store with a full staff. Also, tennis racquet prices are price protected by the manufacturer so there's not much they can do there. You can get some tennis accessories cheaper at the Sports Authority across the street, but I purchase the accessories from TennisTopia to help keep them in business stores like this is good for the local tennis community. read more

After a few misfires with Zappos, I visited Tennis Topia. Nice place. Very nice staff. I am just getting back into tennis and needed tennis shoes. The person helping me took the time to listen to my story, asked severeal questions, and offered a few suggestions. She helped select several models which I tried on, and I did choose Nike Court Lite 2's, a nice entry shoe that did not break the bank. I was quite happy to find such an excellent tennis store, and I hope to progress so I can return again and upgrade my equipment. read more

The location is rather unideal. It's a little difficult to get to and definitely not the welcoming. Prices were pretty unreasonable and definitely very high. Some of the items such as the replacement grips, and dampeners were easily twice the MSRP. Stringing was also mediocre, my racquet strings broke in about 30 minutes of play. Was hoping for the 45 dollars they charged, I would get more playing time. Mostly overpriced to say the least and customer service wasn't all that great. I bought a ball clip (for women who don't have pockets for their tennis balls) and it didn't work for me. When I took it back to the store one of the sales people said something to another associate who was probably a manager who then said twice that he had never heard that this device didn't work before as if it was a huge shock the device didn't work. I didn't appreciate the doubt or attitude. They took it back with store credit only. What a waste of time. Now I'm either stuck with something that didn't work or I have store credit for a store that overcharges for almost everything. This place is right behind REI and is definitely the place to go if you aspire to play like Agassi. They have tons of rackets...tons of them! And they'll let you take them for a test drive before you buy it, for as long as you want. Prices are a little steep but you pay for the quality, the advice and fitting, and they have a huge selection on sale. They also have all the tennis gear you can ever want, and all of the geeky tennis gifts that you would ever want to give to your tennis geek friends and family. read more

Well like the other review this is the only place in the Rockville area that has decent tennis stuff for tennis player not the crazy superstores like dicks and sport auth that would be lucky if anyone in there knew how to play tennis. Has all the new stuff and prices are a little steep but you pay for premium for new stuff and a real tennis store. The customer service is awful, usually staffed by young tennis player with no personality, they might know how to play some tennis but when it comes to sales they stink. Never ask open ended questions always are quick to answer with yes or no. Jeff you need to staff with true professional sales people if you want to may the discretionary sales (sales people are not expecting to make when they walk in) Jeff the owner is a great guy but needs better staff to run a good ship. As others have said, this is pretty much the only tennis place in the area. But I'd go there even if it weren't. The owner is great - always nice and helpful. And when he's not there, Ty knows everything there is to know, calls us by our first names, and goes out of his way to take care of us. I'd say it's a bit pricey, but it is a pricey sport after all. You could certainly find cheaper stuff at RnJ's, but only the older stuff (outlet-style). For the current stuff, Topia's prices are competitive with elsewhere/online. They offer pretty good prices for racket buy backs too. When I'm ready for a new racket, I usually turn in two and it'll cover the price of one new one so I only have to buy my second new one. Not a bad deal at all. The biggest drawback is the parking. A few times, I've had to drive around for awhile waiting for someone to leave. That always gives me the worst anxiety, like I'm racing for a spot and someone's going to beat me out of my chance (I know, I'm such a psycho. I also freak out in traffic if the lanes next to me are moving and I'm sitting still. Everyone else is getting there first! This is a metaphor for my life btw). Anyway, that's hardly reason to not shop here. Just something to expect, and Xanax for (jk - I'd be comatose if I did that, but you get the idea). Either way, I'm big on supporting local, especially if they're nice. So this place is worth it. read more

I wish I could give them five stars but I have some reservations which I'll describe. There were more positives than negatives to my experience, hence the 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 stars. It will likely remain 3 stars given how unwilling these guys are to make things right for customers (more details below). I am someone who prefers to support local businesses. So I was excited to go test some rackets and buy them from Tennistopia. Their demo program is excellent and I ended up buying a new Wilson RF97 countervail. There are some online retailers that will sell you the same new rackets for a similar price but with stringing included (a $30-40 saving) but like I said, I didn't mind paying a small premium to support a local business. I also got my wife a used Babolat Pure Strike, and all said and done, I dropped $400+ on rackets here on the same day (I have the receipt to prove it if Darrell, the owner, decides to come out guns blasting like he does in response to other Yelp reviews). Their used rackets are in pretty good condition and the prices are fair, in contrast to other stuff, which I'll describe shortly. So what was negative about the experience? Well, while I was waiting for them to check out a demo racket, another customer came in to pick up his racket that he had left there for stringing. When he picked it up, he noticed that his Babolat dampener was missing. He asked the store about it, and Darrell started responding pretty aggressively "No sir, we do not keep dampeners, all of my staff returns dampeners as a matter of policy when they collect rackets for stringing" and he went on for a few minutes about how impossible it was for the store to make a mistake and then went on to say "if we did find a dampener, it would be somewhere in this box here.. ". So does this then mean that he does allow for the possibility of a human error on the part of his staff, because just a minute ago he said it was absolutely impossible for his staff to make a mistake? In the end, Darrell gave the guy a dampener that he found lying around in that box he mentioned. After the customer (a very polite and soft spoken man) left, the staff member who was helping me commented "People look for free stuff all the time". I was shocked. Do these guys really think that customers who spend $30-40 on stringing come in there looking for a free $5 dampener? I actually asked the staff member this question and he said "oh yea, we get these guys all the time". This is the sort of respect they have (or not) for paying customers at their business. If this is how they badmouth customers, what were they going to say about me, after I just dropped $400+ on rackets, were I to ask them to wrap an overgrip on my new racket as a courtesy? (which most other stores would do in an eye blink for free btw). So when I went in to collect my racket, I brought my own overgrip and requested them to wrap it up for me since I have only done it a few times and messed it up at least once. Darrell cracked a joke about it and that's totally fine, I can take a joke, but not badmouthing customers to other customers. The second negative for me was when I went to pick up my new racket (after a $40 stringing job), I asked to buy a dampener and I told Darrell that I'd buy whatever he recommended. He recommended a Babolat Vibrakill and I bought it. The price was $11.95. The same dampener is being sold on tennistopia.com for $5.95. I even knew of a Groupon deal but I didn't use it on my racket purchase because Groupons are usually designed to lure in new customers and I already knew about Tennistopia, so it seemed a bit unfair to me to use a Groupon. This is just to communicate how committed I am to supporting local businesses, but if they charge me 2X the price they sell the same items online for, that crosses a boundary for me. I expect to spend quite a bit of money over the next months on accessories and balls but I don't intend to buy them from Tennistopia given the 2X+ prices they charge. Fortunately, this is a free country, Darrell is free to determine his own prices and the way he runs his business and customers are free to take their businesses elsewhere. We are a big group of tennis players, many of us just starting out (we have a coach and take group lessons 3-4 times a week). There are at least 3-4 of us who will be buying new rackets over the next several weeks. I have been recommending Tennistopia to them for rackets, especially their used section. However, for accessories and for friendlier/respectful customer service, we will be looking elsewhere. Summary: 1. Reasonable prices and condition of used rackets. 2. Good stringing job (I got hybrid strings for my new Wilson RF97 countervail). 3. Rude to customers when there is a problem that most other stores would deal with much more respectfully. 4. Accessories priced at ridiculous 2X+ premiums. read more

They were pretty busy when I came in (midday Saturday) but someone still took the time to talk me through the options. and implications of each, for getting my racket restrung. They also did it same-day (less than 3 hour turnaround) and all I had to do was ask. May have been pricey (can't really remember) but definitely still a good store for your tennis needs. read more

This is one of the largest Tennis specialty store in Montgomery County. I have gotten my rackets, shoes and have my racket strung there. I like their stringing service the best. They have a great stringer who has experience stringing the rackets for the pro players at the ATP tournament.
