Came here on a cold Friday night. It always amazes me how they can do so many different dishes so well. The chirashi was super fresh and I always get the eggplant and its tanginess is delicious!

yummy! recently visited because i was nearby at the karaoke bar upstairs. i had been craving some authentic japanese food and grateful i stumbled upon this area and this restaurant. so many options. i ordered the takoyaki and it had this delightful sauce. i also ordered the eel over rice. pretty good but not the best i ever had. takoyaki was definitely my favorite. i took my food to go or else i would've tried a curry or miso soup. everything looked really good and the employees were kind and helpful. i'll definitely come back and try more on the menu.

-- FOOD -- HUGE menu! Lots of options for izakaya and sushi lovers! Menu has grilled meat, rice bowls, udon and ramen, and fresh seafood options! I always get the Salmon Rice here and I love the buttery rice with the Ikura and flaky salmon! -- SERVICE -- Dinner is always busy here and there's usually a wait. The service here can also be pretty slow as they seemed kinda understaffed (totally worth the wait though). -- AMBIANCE-- Tables are clean but do have a slightly sticky feel and the cushions on the benches are well worn. It's not too loud and they have traditional izakaya rooms for larger parties as well as a sushi bar to sit at.

Shoya Izakaya is a fantastic find in the bustling H-Mart center. If you love that authentic Japanese pub vibe, this place delivers. The decor and atmosphere really make you feel like you've been transported to a lively izakaya in Japan--it's the perfect spot for sharing a wide variety of small plates. The Tapas & Kitchen: * Ankimo (Monkfish Liver): This was a standout. It was prepared perfectly--rich, velvety, and a great start to the meal. * Grilled Highlights: The kitchen really excels with the grill. The chicken skin is crispy and decadent, and the chicken liver is another major hit--perfectly cooked and full of flavor. * Seafood Favorites: My wife absolutely loved the steamed clams, and the grilled oysters were a hit as well. The octopus salad was also very fresh and well-balanced. The Sushi Bar: * Fish Selection: The quality and variety here are impressive. We ordered a mix of rolls and nigiri, including scallop, sweet shrimp, and tuna maki. * Quality: Every piece of fish was notably fresh. The only minor critique was the sushi rice--it was a bit dry for my personal taste, but the quality of the seafood more than made up for it. * Snail (Tsubugai): It's great to see more unique options like snail on the menu; it's a nice touch for those who appreciate traditional Japanese variety. The Experience: The menu is huge and well-rounded, offering something for everyone. Despite being our first time, the service was efficient and the pricing felt very fair for the quality and portion sizes provided.

Shoya is our go-to date night spot. The food is always consistent and comes out pretty quickly. It gets really busy on weekends, so plan for a bit of a wait. The ambiance feels like a true Japanese izakaya but just be prepared to leave smelling like the place (kind of like how you would smell after eating Korean BBQ). The ribeye with butter is always perfectly cooked, and the jagabata corn is our favorite side. The piri kara kyuri is a simple but perfect cold side to cleanse your palate between bites. The salmon onigiri is not worth it. It tends to fall apart after the first bite and barely has any salmon inside so you're just paying for rice and seaweed. Yakitori don is good but chicken is sometimes over cooked. Despite this, most of their dishes are reliably delicious!

My coworkers and I came here and Shoya DELIVERED! We wanted sushi and I suggested this place as I have not been here in a while. We ordered many different options. From sushi, to skewers, soup and more as you can see in the pictures. The food was tasty and very delicious. The service was very efficient. The ambiance is the best part because it looks very traditional compared to other sushi restaurants. They have privacy tables and all. If you are looking for your tastebud to explode with goodness. This is your place!

The second I got into the restaurant it was like I was at japan the service was very fast and the servers were nice . We ordered some appetizers, such as the Renkon chips and the Mentaiko. If you are interested in squid I think you might like the Squid legs they were very crispy. I would recommend getting the Kushiyaki set. My family and I had an amazing experience!

Ordered via grub hub around 8:45pm on a Sunday thinking the order would be ready within 20 minutes. Turns out the restaurant was still packed by the time I got there around 9:15 and only part of my order was ready. They said okonomiyaki takes a bit longer and I had to wait another 10 minutes. We were pretty hungry but staff were apologetic and offered us water while we waited. The wait was worth it! The okonomiyaki was so good - thick and flavorful. We also ordered a sushi combo and a red bean dessert. The sushi was good but a bit too much rice for each nigiri. I loved the dessert and would go back for that, had never heard of sasa dango before. Overall just know this spot might be busy at times but definitely worth a try. We are looking forward to returning to try it for dine in!

Came for dinner on a weekday night and it wasn't too busy as we were able to get seated pretty fast. We ordered a lot of dishes to share. We got two rolls as well (not pictured): the big roll and doraville roll. The rolls were pretty good and they were big and had lots of fish. I felt like the udon was okay, it did have lots of vegetables but the flavor was just not there. The skewers were pretty good. I did think that the teriyaki sauce was a little too sweet. The squid was definitely the best. The sashimi platter we ordered was also good. It was all super fresh and the pieces were very thick. The service was fast but could be a little friendlier. It was also super hot in the restaurant!

I finally made it back to Shoya Izakaya after 1.5 years, and I'm glad to say the food still hits the spot! I had a mix of my go-to favorites and some new dishes, and everything was delicious, fresh, and packed with flavor.

My friend and I feasted here and didn't break the bank. The menu is very extensive and we had a hard time deciding what to get! With the help of the server and pictures on the menu and we were able to find a good line up of items to try. We had the Pirikara Kyuri (Spicy Cucumber), Special Yakisoba (potato, egg, & noodles), 5 skewer set (with chicken), Wanton cheese Age, takoyaki, & salmon skin roll. With Aka Kiri & green tea for beverages. We beat the dinner rush by coming right when they opened but this place became busy very quickly. The service was fast and friendly. I loved sitting on the second level overlooking the rest of the restaurant. My next goal is to come here with more people so we can all try more items on the menu!

My family of six came a couple minutes before 5 pm opening and there were already 10 people in front of us. My son says that is a sign of a good restaurant! Food was outstanding. I ordered the fried oyster and salmon rice which was a very generous serving which my daughter and son wanted to try as well. My daughter ordered the miso ramen and son ordered shoya sushi assortment platter. My brother ordered the himachekama which was the last to come but a very large portion and reasonably priced. My parents share a sushi platter, dried small fish, and a jellyfish appetizer. They also tried the pudding for dessert which they liked. . Staff was friendly and i think the owner or manager saw that my mom had a mobility disability and got us a close table to the front in our own private room. My mom was so pleased with the quality of food and affordability. Thank you for wonderful food of great quality. We will definitely be back!

    Roach

Disappointing experience. While dining, a roach crawled onto our table, which immediately made me lose my appetite. When we notified the server, we were told that there was no manager available, which was shocking given the situation. On top of that, we were informed that nothing could be removed from the bill for items we had not touched yet. Between the sanitation concern and the lack of management support, the situation was handled very poorly. This completely ruined the meal and left us extremely uncomfortable. I expected much better accountability and guest care.

Are there pork free ramen options?

Yes. They have soy and shio ramen, where broth is not pork based. Just ask to not include the pork slices/topping.

They not answering phone - are they still in business?

They are open. Hours have changed from 11 am - 9 pm and I believe last seating is at 8:30 pm.

It's still like eating in a walk-in freezer, and their water still tastes like pipe interior, but the food and service has been so much better. The rice is toothsome for what I'm used to, but I've been told the katsudon (so good) is the most authentic to what my friend used to get at a Japanese university. Their tonkotsu ramen broth is pretty great too! I always have a hard time choosing but wish I'd try more from the menu. I appreciate the house-made pickles (though a bit too sweet for me to eat the whole plate). Law of supply and demand. But given the elevation in quality of life this establishment has provided me with across the years, I feel I owe them some good marketing through a review. If there was a sushi coefficient of freshness, quality, quantity, and cost, this place wins everyday. C= (Fr*Q*q*c) Fr: 9 Q: 8 q: 10 c: 10 C(Yokohama)= 7200 Don't get me wrong - the competition is fierce for delicious sushi (Fudo, MF sushi, Nobu, all the Omakase scenarios popping up in town). What this means is the cost (c) is way too high, giving it a low 1-5 in the equation. Also, quantity (q) is low, about 4-6. So, the resulting coefficient is very low overall. From my understanding, the fish here only comes from Japan, so it's good stuff - and they really load up the rolls (a lot of the time), and they have this deal on weekend for special rolls (25% off I think). So you do get the quality, quantity, and decent price (about $12-15 per specialty roll). The regular rolls are good too, and loaded with fish. E.g. spicy salmon/tuna. So, if you're looking to go crazy on some good sushi without restraint and without breaking the bank completely, this is your spot. family owned I believe, very nice and efficient service. What a great deal - my friends and I decided to check it out and we had a great dinner. Servers were attentive and the food came out in a timely manner. I ordered the Samurai Roll, as well as the Chicken Karaage appetizer. The chicken was sooo good - perfectly, lightly fried with sauce to dip. Tender and flavorful! The Samurai Roll was substantial and I appreciate the generosity of the roll. It was topped with salmon, and usually when rolls are topped with fish, it's usually a pretty thin slice of fish, but these slices of salmon were quite thick in my opinion. The pieces of sushi themselves are also fairly thick - it was a big bite for me to eat each piece in one. I made a reservation in advance and the staff already had my table ready even though I was a little early. The table was already dressed with menus, chopsticks, and some small plates/sauce dishes. Love it when restaurants are on top of it!

When we arrived, I realized the location used to be the old Hong Kong Supermarket -- only longtime locals would probably remember that. The layout inside was pretty interesting. There was a Te'amos milk tea shop in the middle, Lao Szechuan on the right, and the hot pot & BBQ restaurant on the left. The staff greeted us warmly and quickly helped us get seated. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was that they offered freshly made milk teas and fruit teas instead of bottled drinks. The drinks were decent and refreshing, especially for balancing out the richness of the meal. Each person gets their own mini hot pot, which I really liked because everyone could customize their own soup base and ingredients. We chose a variety of broths including mushroom, spicy mala, tomato, and herbal soup. Using the iPad ordering system, we basically ordered one of everything from both the hot pot and BBQ menus. The food came out surprisingly fast, and they even used robots to deliver dishes to the table, which was smooth and efficient. For hot pot, my personal favorites were the fatty beef slices, lamb, beef tripe, black tripe, tofu skin rolls, squid flowers, enoki mushrooms, corn, lotus root slices, kelp knots, fish balls, and beef tendon balls. Everything tasted great with the broth and my favorite sesame dipping sauce. On the BBQ side, the standout items for me were the cumin lamb, beef tongue, chicken cartilage, short ribs, and squid. We weren't exactly BBQ experts, so some meats weren't cooked perfectly, but the flavor was still really enjoyable -- and the best part was that you could keep ordering as much as you wanted. Honestly, for around $40 per person, it felt like a very good value. My parents both thought it was worth the price. We left full and satisfied, and the service was always attentive whenever we needed something.
