For the past two visits, we've had some of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. First, the customer service was disappointing. The short, thin hostess at the front repeatedly rolled her eyes behind our backs while seating us. I didn't notice it at the time, but our friend pointed it out towards the end of our meal, and it left a very negative impression. Our server was also inattentive. He checked on nearly every table around us multiple times but rarely came by ours. We ordered over $150 worth of food for just the two of us, yet received very little service. Despite that, we still left a 20% tip. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing as well. A lot of the food arrived cold. The quality and taste were nowhere near as good as what we remembered from previous visits. After giving this restaurant multiple chances, we can confidently say we will not be returning. read more

So I love this spot. It did not miss. There were some things that I would have liked but it was so good that I don't even bother with that. It's still gonna get a five-star rating from me. It's in a shopping center area in Dora Ville so there's no paid parking. It's a free lot but around that specific part of the building it may be packed but there's parking everywhere. You'll come in and the outside of the building looks drastically different from the inside because inside it looks very rustic Japanese decor. You'll find a lot of wood and a lot of decorations that go to that time period but still great, still very nice and appeasing to look at. The staff was super patient with me and that definitely made me nod my head to the customer service. I needed more time for some things and they were patient. They kept my glass full and I was also very appreciated, especially with that hot spicy soup that I got lol. Super great staff. Spicy gyoza soup - so the soup was really good. My only thing was the fact that they brought it out hotter than lava lol. You will need another bowl there so that you could eat the soup and hopefully it'll cool down because you don't want it to burn through your mouth. The flavor in there was really good and the dumplings in there were great. Ooba maki (delicious pork roll) - so you get a few of these on a skewer and you get two skewers of meat and it was really good. You can taste the distinct pork flavor and it was seasoned very well. You don't really get the leaves, which is what it's wrapped in, but I guess you wouldn't taste that. No this was a really good snack and it's just enough for an appetizer to get you hungry. Yakitori Chicken - this is a go-to no. If it's this type of Japanese spot, I'm going to get the Yakitori. It comes on a couple of skewers and it was very flavorful. I got my teriyaki style but this was a hit. It's very simple but it's direct. Scallop and bacon - the scallop and bacon was really good. Like everything else it came on a few skewers and you get a few pieces on the skewers. It was actually really tasty and I would get it again. The only thing is the bacon kind of overshadowed everything else but bacon does that so I can't hold that against them. Miso Pork belly - the pork belly was okay. I don't want to say that like it was bad because it was actually really good but of the other things this might have been the thing that was the most decent. It wasn't necessarily because of the flavor per se. It was more so that some of the consistency was a little weird. Not in a bad way because I would order it again but it just felt like you have part of it that was melting in your mouth. The other part was a little bit more chewy than it needed to be but that could be for any reason. It was still good. Vegetable tempura - the vegetable tempura was okay. It came with very large vegetables and it came with a sauce that had a little sweetness to it. It kind of tried to balance out with the deep-fried food and the sweet on the side. Atsigiti bacon - The bacon was okay. It really was just as they cut bacon so it really wasn't anything special or major about it. But it got quite a bit of the in the bowl. Chicken wasabi - The chicken lasagna is basically the chicken yakitori with wasabi sauce drizzle. If that don't get me wrong. The chicken is always good but some really creep up on you here LOL. It was a solid choice. Pork belly - the pork belly was good.... I got it teriyaki style. When I got it the first time I got the miso styles but both of it was actually really good. Honestly, there's not a whole lot of difference except for the only sweetness but it's still great. Overall I will 102% be coming back to this kind of spot. yummy! recently visited because i was nearby at the karaoke bar upstairs. i had been craving some authentic japanese food and grateful i stumbled upon this area and this restaurant. so many options. i ordered the takoyaki and it had this delightful sauce. i also ordered the eel over rice. pretty good but not the best i ever had. takoyaki was definitely my favorite. i took my food to go or else i would've tried a curry or miso soup. everything looked really good and the employees were kind and helpful. i'll definitely come back and try more on the menu. read more

The ribeye with butter is always perfectly cooked, and the jagabata corn is our favorite side. The piri kara kyuri is a simple but perfect cold side to cleanse your palate between bites. The salmon onigiri is not worth it. It tends to fall apart after the first bite and barely has any salmon inside so you're just paying for rice and seaweed. I am in shoya izakaya for dinner and I was forced to seat in the counter while there are many tables unoccupied. I was told to go to Hmart if I do not want to sit in the counter. When I complained, I was told that the man who were treated me unprofessionally is the owner... I would like to make the public post and request a public apology. I would give the owner zero star!!! BTW, the senior chef who made me sashimi is always the best every time I dine in this restaurant... he is simply the best!!! And the womwaiters are so pleasant... Ordered via grub hub around 8:45pm on a Sunday thinking the order would be ready within 20 minutes. Turns out the restaurant was still packed by the time I got there around 9:15 and only part of my order was ready. They said okonomiyaki takes a bit longer and I had to wait another 10 minutes. We were pretty hungry but staff were apologetic and offered us water while we waited. The wait was worth it! The okonomiyaki was so good - thick and flavorful. We also ordered a sushi combo and a red bean dessert. The sushi was good but a bit too much rice for each nigiri. I loved the dessert and would go back for that, had never heard of sasa dango before. Overall just know this spot might be busy at times but definitely worth a try. We are looking forward to returning to try it for dine in! read more

Came for dinner on a weekday night and it wasn't too busy as we were able to get seated pretty fast. We ordered a lot of dishes to share. We got two rolls as well (not pictured): the big roll and doraville roll. The rolls were pretty good and they were big and had lots of fish. I felt like the udon was okay, it did have lots of vegetables but the flavor was just not there. The skewers were pretty good. I did think that the teriyaki sauce was a little too sweet. My friend and I feasted here and didn't break the bank. The menu is very extensive and we had a hard time deciding what to get! With the help of the server and pictures on the menu and we were able to find a good line up of items to try. We had the Pirikara Kyuri (Spicy Cucumber), Special Yakisoba (potato, egg, & noodles), 5 skewer set (with chicken), Wanton cheese Age, takoyaki, & salmon skin roll. With Aka Kiri & green tea for beverages. We beat the dinner rush by coming right when they opened but this place became busy very quickly. The service was fast and friendly. Disappointing experience. While dining, a roach crawled onto our table, which immediately made me lose my appetite. When we notified the server, we were told that there was no manager available, which was shocking given the situation. On top of that, we were informed that nothing could be removed from the bill for items we had not touched yet. My friends and I came here on a Saturday night to find their front area FILLED with people waiting. Our party of 3 waited about 30 minutes before getting seated. I specifically was craving sushi so I was confused when there were a limited amount of options on their menu but tons of other noodles, appetizers, and rice bowls to pick from instead. After asking our waitress, we did receive a more expansive maki list so when in doubt, ask. We shared the Caterpillar and salmon skin maki, katsu don, and sukiyaki. Although the more basic choice of the two maki, I certainly preferred the caterpillar maki since I didn't realize it was only going to be salmon skin and not salmon slices. Both the katsu and sukiyaki were well seasoned and served fresh from their kitchen since they were boiling upon arrival. If you're looking to itch your true sushi craving, you may want to venture to other places but otherwise they had plenty of other items to pick from! Portions are a little on the smaller side but given the prices, I feel as though it is evenly matched. Service is on the slower side which makes their little "call lights" at the table convenient even though it still feels a little rude. My family has been frequenting this restaurant for many years. They're authentic and Japanese owned. The taste doesn't change for more than a decade, and their quality is solid. Large menu with a good variety of dishes. Their menu has photos for every dish so it helps a lot with ordering food. They have a separate menu for sushi which I never really see they give out until you ask for it. The plaza has plenty of parking but spots in front of the restaurant is normally full. They're in the same plaza with H-mart and many other milk tea and sweets shops. They don't take reservation with groups of less than 6 persons, and weekend dinner are always packed. We normally come very early to avoid the long lines and waiting crowds. Highly recommended! read more

Highly do not recommend this izakaya. Everything was sub par and only our server was tentative and really friendly. The beef tongue was so chewy and still have a very strong smell so it was not prepared correctly. The kushiyaki was not over charcoal so it was just like meat on a stick and grilled over fire which we can all do at home, missing that smoky flavor in their grilled selection. The sashimi selection was the worse there is. They were not fresh at all and we cannot do mackerel so we asked for no mackerel, but still ended up with similar cuts in the same family. And my wife also threw up eating it. It is so hard to find a decent izakaya here in Atlanta. Sadly Shoya Izakaya is quite disappointing. read more

The salmon skin salad is to die for -- the crispy salmon skin paired extremely well with the salad leaves and the sesame dressing. The tantan ramen was solid, very flavorful. I wished it came with a jammy soft boiled egg. I wasn't a big fan of the agedashi tofu, the outside skin was on the mushier side. The grilled meat skewers (chef's selection) were decent but did not taste like they recently came off the grill. I loved the ambience of the place. There's plenty of parking and when we arrived at Shoya on a Friday night, it took about 15-20 min wait before we were seated. The restaurant is a little crowded and the menu pretty extensive. Our waitress was super helpful with sushi recommendation. We ordered the Yakitori chicken skewers, a specialty salmon roll, and the baked katsu curry. The chicken skewers were absolutely delicious and our roll was very fresh. The katsu curry was also delicious although the meat was a little chewy. Overall, great spot for dinner! read more

I have been coming to Shoya for years and it's definitely a nice spot! It gets super busy and opens late. I usually get the Tonkotsu Red Tan Tan ramen and it's the best!! I love the spice and the minced meat, it's my Go-to!! I also recently tried the Una-Guy don and it was AWESOME!!! It's a rice bowl topped with Eel and sukiyaki beef and it's a wonderful combination that you NEED to try! I am a huge eel fan so this was right up my alley. It also comes with a little cup of miso soup. The rice has a bit of the sauce from the meat and the eel on it and i could eat three bowls of just that!!! Love it! One thing about Shoya, is I feel that it is a little inconsistent. Sometimes the ramen broth is not as flavorful as it could be, each experience is a little different so I usually enjoy my time there, but I have had one or two bad meals.
