A weekly spot for my family and I! My partner's mom is Japanese and this is the only Japanese restaurant in pgh she will go to. Reservations are highly recommended - it's on the smaller side. The menu has so many options and an amazing variety. One thing to note is this Japanese food is not like most others. Its focus is on homestyle, also fried/stir fried Japanese dishes. So do not expect Ramen or noodle soups. A couple things that are always ordered is the Kaarage, Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki (best in the city), yakisoba or udon, and gyoza. The staff is so sweet and the decorations remind me of Izakaya places in larger cities. They have a bar with cool cocktails and adorable bento boxes they sell during lunch hours throughout the week. I went in a group, and we split a lot of different items. The seaweed salad was good (4/5), and the pork gyoza was all right (3/5). The takoyaki has a crunchy outside and a good flavor (4/5), and the okonomiyaki is pretty filling (4/5); these were the best two. The yaki-udon with shrimp was ok (3/5) but definitely expensive for what it was and the quantity; they also don't add much shrimp, despite the up charge. The sake no shioyaki was below average for salmon (2/5) and very expensive for that amount they give you. Similarly, the onigiri is almost entirely rice if you add salmon (2/5). You order on a tablet, and they bring the food out. Service was ok (3/5); we had empty waters for a while. The restaurant is well-decorated, and you can see the chefs work, which gives it an ambiance somewhat like a hibachi place (4/5). This was such a cute spot! Definitely feels very cozy and like an izakaya. They do Japanese home cooking. Everything is made fresh on the spot. You order on an iPad. I came for lunch and really liked my miso pork katsu bento. It came with miso soup. My friend liked his yakisoba with tofu. They have a large menu that can accommodate vegetarians. This adorable Japanese restaurant caught me by surprise! I came for weekday lunch and reservations are not required. Like others have said, don't expect sushi, but instead come for the teppan (flat iron plate/griddle) yaki (grill)! I love a good okonomiyaki, and I was delighted to see that they have both the regular and Hiroshima-style (noodles in place of, or in addition to? I'm not an expert!) on the menu. I went for lunch, so ordered the small lunch size version, and while it was overall tasty, I did find the pork option to be a little tough/chewy. Among our table for 4 including 2 babies, we also split a karaage (fried chicken) bento, gyudon (beef over rice), bacon-wrapped mochi, fried squid, and a red bean dango for dessert. Overall I'd say everything was pretty tasty! The mochi and dango were my favorites, but I clearly have a sweet tooth. I was surprised that my hot tea came out as hot water and a tea bag, but other than that everything was great. How does this place only have a 4.2?! I read through many and it seems that the pricing has a lot of folks disappointed but I didn't feel that way at all. Albeit I did go during lunch hours which typically reflect lower prices. I'd much rather pay a little more for quality and care than otherwise. I had the Kakiage bento and my husband had the Katsudon- both amazing. Honestly, I don't even know if the Katsudon was on the menu- my husband asked the owner if they made it and he said he would make it especially for him. Four of us went at 6:30pm yesterday for dinner. The inside is small and cozy with limited seating. We family styled a lot of different things so we got to try basically half the menu. Everything we tried was delicious! My faves were the yasai kakiage (it's deep fried but has veggies so it's healthy!), bacon mochi (the flavor and textures were incredible), the yakisoba with beef, and the crunchy and lightly sweet kinako mochi puffs! I think it's a bit pricy for what you're paying for. I would say if you know that you like the items offered here, this restaurant will deliver what you're asking for, but nothing beyond. My okonomiyaki with yakisoba tasted pretty solid, but I wouldn't pay the price for it again. My friends yakisoba portion seemed pretty lackluster and wasn't particularly flavorful or well made. He commented his noodles lacked freshness. If youre a lover of japanese food, give this place a try if you're willing to spend a lot on items you could realistically recreate much more affordably/satisfyingly at home. A beautiful flight of delicious food and fancy. We really enjoyed sitting at the bar and watching the Chef's do their thing. I would definetely recommend making a reservation on peak nights if you want a table- either way you will receive great service. My favorite was the salmon Teppanyaki. I have never had such crispy salmon skin. Do not skip the takoyaki. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Hiroshimayaki (the pancake just wasn't my thing) but my partner cleared the plate happily! This was a very disappointing visit. 1. Okonomiyaki was essentially a oversized cabbage patty with bonito flakes. There was just enough egg to bind it. I definitely would not describe it was pancake. $11 for one of the cheapest vegetables - absolutely not worth it. It literally just taste like cabbage. Even my fiance's mother's cabbage/spam (Irish tradition), which everyone dislikes including herself, is more flavorful. 2. Beef gyudon was an absolute joke. Gyudon is typically made with the cheapest but if meat. For $11, this came in one of those small Styrofoam type bowls that sits in the palm of your hand (expect not made of cardboard instead of Styrofoam). This was probably like 4 oz of gristle and a scoop of rice. There's this authentic Japanese (owned by Japanese immigrants) on Philadelphia next to where I live that sells this for $14, but four - five times the serving. I wear a size 4.5 ring as a grown adult. The size of the $11 beef gyudon bowl is comparable to the size of my hand. 3. Yaki onigiri - rice ball the size of a small palm for $3. Not crispy, did not taste any of the smokey goodness that comes the grilling. Sushi rice used overcooked since it was gummy and mushy in the inside. As a Philadelphian visiting my home town, everything is cheap to me (including LeMont and Monterey Bay in Mount Washington) since that's how overpriced everything is in Philadelphia and Manhattan. Kytoto is hands down the biggest rip off and is the first place i fee that is unrightfully more expensive. None of what we ordered (which were very basic items) tasted better than what I have had in Philadelphia and NYC, but yet costed much more/similarly. Severely overpriced for very average food and every more below average portions. Server was nice, which helped my personal overall rating. My friend confirmed her will not be returning either. This was my first time - he brought me here so we could sit on the floor,but that area has been converted to restaurant storage. I especially do not like I'm giving small businesses negative reviews. I am more likely to not say anything,but my one friend once made a point that it is a learning opportunity for the owners/managers, if they even see it. read more

Authentic Japanese restaurant in my neighborhood of Highland Park. Was introduced by my wonderful friend and I'm glad I finally made my way to it. They have indoor dining but seating is limited so recommended to reserve in advance. Loved the vibes of the restaurant felt very at home. The waiters were very friendly and food was very tasty. The servings were a good portion I carried home my dish to have another day. We ordered the Ozeki drink, tasted like a milky wine and was sweet, I enjoyed it. We also had the Takoyaki which was filled with some diced octopus (very chewy) great snack and starter. Then ordered the Hiroshimayaki mine was filled with shrimp and corn and my friend had beef and bacon. It's a Japanese pancake layered with noodles and egg and your choice of fillings. One of my favorite spots for smaller plates. My fiancé and I like to order a bunch of different dishes, and there are some we always have to get. We are big fans of the Hiroshimayaki and Kushi Dango (dessert). This most recent visit, we also ordered chicken karaage, octopus karaage, and gyoza. All tasty, but the chicken karaage was especially juicy. If you choose to dine in, there are cool Japanese style decorations, and the open kitchen is a nice touch. Really fun spot. read more

Such a wonderful place. We are so happy they have been able to keep their establishment open during the challenges of this pandemic. One of the things our family has really needed has been "comfort food," and this place has given us so much comfort since it opened. We have gotten takeout several times, and were honored to see how much thought and care they have put into serving their food to their customers in a safe manner. Everyone follows mask and social distancing recommendations, and the food simply could not be more delicious, despite the challenges of the moment. Some relatives of mine felt that the quality of the food wasn't on par but I am like you aren't going to really find anything more in this area unless you know how to make it yourself. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this food! I haven't been to too many Japanese restaurants, but I think this is one of the best I've tried. This was my first time trying everything I ordered. The menu has many unique options, but I decided to try the okonomiyaki (Japanese cabbage pancake, without any add one), kushi dango (sweet rice balls with red bean paste), dashi maki (Japanese omelette), and korokke (fried vegetable and potato patties). All of them were excellent. The star of the show had to be the okonomiyaki. The price was quite reasonable for the portions (not too big, but not small either). It was bonded with a fair amount of eggs. There was some seaweed or something of that sort on top, alongside some Japanese Mayo or some similar sauce. The cabbage and vegetables were crunchy and overall, this was fantastic! I can't wait to try one again. Must get this if you come here. The dashi maki was quite good as well. The texture was a bit unpleasant to me, but this could be because it doesn't travel well. Flavor-wise, it was on the sweeter side. Decent portion. They sprinkle some spicy flakes on top. Still, quite a good and light appetizer or snack. The korokke was extremely tasty as well. They were large and crispy; a fair deal for the price, I think. There were little pieces of peas, corn, and other vegetables inside, but it was mostly mashed potatoes with some crispy coating and fried. They serve it with a delicious, slightly sweet sauce, which also has a little blob of Mayo. So good! The dessert was unique and interesting. The rice balls (kushi dango) were chewy, but did not have much sweetness to them. The bean paste was what had most of the flavor, and it was very tasty. They come on a little skewer. For a very reasonable $3, why not give it (or one of their other desserts) a try? This is a good option for those that want dessert, but don't have a huge sweet tooth. All in all, I am very happy with my order. I tried many unique items and appreciate having this option in Pittsburgh. The food is very high quality and the portions are quite decent. There are lots of regulars that love this place, and with good reason. It's a very welcoming Japanese restaurant with authentic cuisine. Although they are called Kyoto, the restaurant features foods from other regions of Japan, especially the Okonomiyaki pancakes from the city of Hiroshima. So while the owner is from Kyoto, her husband was trained to cook Okonomiyaki. There's a wide range of Sake, Beer and Shōchū, oddly there is no Shōchū made from sweet potatoes, which is fairly common in Japan. The Sakura Mochi was a delectable finish to a wonderful meal. We had such a fun meal here! Four of us split a little of a lot of the items on the menu. We loved the ability to order on your phone as it allows for flexibility and adding more to your meal as you go. Every bite of food was good, from the warm and cozy miso soup to the flavorful and soft gyoza to the crunchy and delightful miso pork katsu. Kimchi and takuan were a good refreshing change of pace between bites. The katsu chicken curry had good flavor and was a large portion. What a wonderfully cozy restaurant! It seems that a Japanese family operates the business and a lot of the dishes taste just like the ones I used to enjoy in Japan as a little kid. The Okonomiyaki and Hiroshimayaki (Hiroshima variant of okonomiyaki only available for dinner) brought back so many memories of my own mother making them after school. This was more or less chicken and gravy, but with Asian-style, curry-flavored gravy, on a large bed of white rice. Great experience dining here for the first time last weekend for a friend's birthday! The staff were so friendly and accommodating. I heard from a few people that I needed to try a variety of dishes to get the full experience, so I did just that. I tried the seaweed salad (delicious, classic), korokke (mashed potato and veggie patties, so rich and yummy), kimchi (some of the best I've had), yaki udon with pork (very big portion and very fresh), and a yaki onigiri (grilled ball of rice wrapped in seaweed, so comforting) - all were delicious and so simple yet flavorful! I also tasted some of my husband's dishes, including the gyoza (simple and perfectly cooked), tako karaage (deep fried octopus), and kamo negi (a SUPER flavorful duck and veggie sauté). They have very limited seating due to COVID, so make sure to call in for a table before visiting. Everything is served on paper plates/bowls, which slightly affected our experience dining in. The fried plates were definitely the stars; agedeshi tofu was extremely tender and paired well with the sauce and the tako karage would have been stellar if it came out hot.
