While researching a few restaurant ideas for a ladies night out, I came across Sakura, which may be my new go-to sushi spot. The location itself does feel a little like a hole in the wall, but what they do give you is quality. We ordered a few different rolls which we shared so that we could try a variety: spicy salmon, Philadelphia, and eel rolls. Each roll was fresh and very tasty. During the meal, the staff was attentive to our needs but was great about giving us space to catch up. Next time I'm in the mood for sushi, I'm ordered Sakura!

Each roll better! Hard to choose!

We went strictly for sushi. This was our first visit. We were extremely pleased. YAY Staff: very friendly Atmosphere: nicely casual Menu: HUGE, very descriptive Sushi: great flavors, very fresh, beautiful presentation HMMM It was honestly a bit difficult to order additional sushi. This should not be the case. Also, at no time was a fork offered... friend was a little shakey on the 'no utensil backup plan' but was up for the challenge and came out of the deal with better 'stick skills! And, of course, the plum wine was mighty fine! Would definitely go back. Everywhere does not make fabulous sushi - this place definitely does!

They have fantastic prices for bento box lunch specials at $7.95 each which includes miso soup, various types of sushi rolls, gyoza, and tempura. This is what I usually have and haven't gone for dinner more than once or twice. It's of reasonable quality but nothing special. Sometimes the tempura is very overdone. For my visit today everything came out cooked well though. The green tea has a lot of residual powder in it. It's a worthwhile place for decent Asian Fusion at cheap lunch prices.

The best sushi in pgh. I always get the lobster sushi and some soup, and it has been amazing every time. I've also gotten lobster roll and added cream cheese as well as the CA roll. All AMAZING. I also have gotten pork lo Mein and that has been phenomenal too. Also very sweet staff! Highly recommend.

A couple of friends warned me not to ("awful" and "tastes nothing like Japanese food"), but curiosity brought me here on a Tuesday night. Okay, it really isn't that bad. Craving sushi? The fish isn't the freshest, but this is not the worst place to get sushi in Pittsburgh. (Trust me; I've had much worse.) Unless you have ridiculously high standards, you'll probably be satisfied if you order the right rolls. We ordered the shrimp tempura roll, dragon roll, salmon avocado roll, and the red dragon roll. The red dragon roll was probably the best of the four, but all of them were average to good. And I wasn't even hungry; if I were, then I'd probably think they tasted better. Boyfriend was a bit more harsh though ("it's a little better than GEagle's sushi"). The only thing that really bothered me was that the AC wasn't on even though it was 80 degrees out. I am so glad I heard about Sakura from a Pittsburgh food blogger. The Eight treasures bbq pork, hand ripped beef noodles, and Laotongguan pork sandwich were all delicious. It was a crispy noodle pancake with tender, juicy pork. The wide, ripped beef noodle dish had a great limey-spicy oily flavor. The service was great and we will definitely return to try more food on the menu. We had a great meal for a great price.

Truly worth the visit! The staff was very friendly. We ordered our meal based on Instagram influence and couldn't be more pleased with the result. We ordered the Laotongguan Pork and the Eight Treasure Spicy Sandwiches. Both were appetizers and both we delicious. Such amazing flavors and paired well with a Sapporo. We then finished on the Xinjiang Style Chicken and the noddle, minced pork and bok choy dish that isn't on the menu. They both came with noodles which may have been too much noodles. Otherwise, the flavors were outstanding. I'm looking forward to returning and trying more dishes!!

I just stumbled upon this place a few weeks ago, despite the fact that I try to visit squirrel hill as often as I can. I tried the sushi on my first visit. I love sushi, and I know who's good and who's not so great in Pittsburgh. It's very good. The quality of fish is excellent, and they have a nice variety of platters and specialty rolls. We tried a lot that day, and liked everything. Today I was in the mood for something hot, as the summers coming to an end and tonight is almost jacket weather. The owner, Ping Geng, came up to my table and showed me a menu with traditional Chinese dishes on it. I literally just drove back into town from Toronto's Chinatown earlier today, and eagerly wanted to try something traditional offered locally. Everything was excellent, from the eight treasure spicy sandwich, to the scallion puff pancake, to the BBQ pork sandwich to the house made dumplings. In addition, there's a Chinese brunch menu offered on Saturdays and Sunday's from 10am-1pm that I'm very interested in trying.

changed chef. Dishes looks and tastes like this. I took photos. It's getting worse and worse for this restaurant.

I'll be dreaming of their thick, chewy, savory handcut noodles. We also got a dumpling sampler and loved all of those too.

I've been generally impressed by the quality of the sushi. We ordered takeout this time, and everything was extremely well packaged and presented. In terms of the food, we focussed on fairly standard maki rolls: a spicy salmon roll and a spicy California roll. Both were very nicely done. We also tried the veg farm roll, and that was a nice vegetable forward option. Not life changing, but nicely done. We also opted for a vegetable poke bowl, and that was also good. Basically the same combination of vegetables as the veg farm roll, but in a bowl format. The bowl was good, but it was lacking some sort of sauce or glaze that might have pulled things together. It was easy enough to toss on some condiments of our own, but the bowl could have been better. Overall, I this is my favorite sushi destination in Squirrel Hill. It's very clear that the owners are invested in turning out a high quality experience, and that's exactly the type of business I like to support.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

My usual order is the chicken katsu bento box, which comes with a good portion of crunchy sliced chicken katsu, rice, two dumplings, a California roll, and miso soup. It feels like a solid, filling meal with enough variety to make it satisfying. The only downside with my most recent takeout order was the sauce placed in the middle of the container. I'm not sure exactly what it was, and after tasting it, it wasn't really for me. Because of the layout of the takeout container, some of it spilled into the rice and rolls. Next time, I'd probably ask for that sauce on the side in a separate container.

The restaurant is located right on Mt Washington, giving a good view of the city. The interior looks appropriate for a sushi restaurant, but due to the massive windows lacked the darker vibe of other upscale restaurants. I've been to hundreds of sushi spots and the interior was merely average. Otaru seems to struggle with its identity. It needs to either commit to being an upscale restaurant or relax and simply be a quality one. The wait staff were kind and prompt, but at times appeared they may be less experienced. We were brought hot (paper) towels and edamame. We ordered the fried tako balls as an app. I personally don't prefer tako and found it very dense and chewy and the overall flavors were too undeveloped. The hand rolls were well filled and were easy to eat due to being more of a taco configuration than a true hand roll. The nori was not too tough, lending to a pleasant experience. The nigiri and sashimi were also good. The nigiri were good, but not as elevated as another upscale sushi spot in the city. They were still very good, but not quite excellent. They either need a bit more development or to be relaxed and served as two per order and the price adjusted slightly upward. If you take one thing from this review, let it be this. The yellowtail jalepeno cups were astonishing. By far this was the most well executed dish I have ever eaten and the best sushi dish I've had. They appear to be wrapped in toasted sesame seed wrappers. If you've had Hapi mixed crackers they give the same great flavor of the "fried chicken" pieces but with yuzu vinaigrette and the umami of the fish. I will certainly be back solely because of how good they were.
