I started with the miso soup, which was incredible. The tofu was so nicely cooked, even if you're not a tofu fan then this will make you change your mind. I got a nigiri plate, which was a nice sampler of what they have to offer. I chose this over the sashimi because this one already had the toppings built into it rather than the sashimi making your own toppings choices that all come on the side. I like to hear what the chef recommends with each fish so I didn't have to think about it. It had a tiny bit of wasabi in between the rice and the fish, which was nice and each fish had different toppings so you get quite a variety. They also have a chef special plate, but I didn't choose that just because I've never been here before, so I thought the regular plate would be fine. If I was a regular or more into fish, like knowing the differences between all of them then maybe I would make the chef's choice selection I did get a sashimi of Toro, though, and it tasted like butter. The tuna toast was fantastic. The milk bread that they use is out of this world and it was so fresh. I recommend adding some soy sauce to really complement it. The shrimp tempura hand roll was also very good. Nice size too. For dessert, we got the matcha-misu which was a play on tiramisu. It was very light and flavor, but still very good. I couldn't really taste the Matcha but the cream they used was delicious. We also got the chocolate torte, which was more rich/bitter with the sauce around the side but everything on the plate complemented each other very well, like having everything in one bite was perfect. The cocktails are also yummy. Our service was fantastic, she went over the top with explaining, and I was actually a little overwhelmed just because of the choices here. So much fish and I didn't know the name of any of them haha the place is small so recommend getting a reservation, but they also have bar seating. Vibes are cool. Overall, for everything that we got and being full at the end of it all...it was extremely pricey to get to that point. So maybe for a lunch it would be make more sense financially.

Best sushi in Pittsburgh, everything was so fresh, and the toro just melted in your mouth. We haven't been back in 5 years, and it is still just as good, if not better than the first time. The service was great, and the staff was very friendly and attentive.

Sushi spot known for their sushi, handrolls, and gin! The place has an intimate vibe, with just a few tables and mostly counter seating, which makes it feel personal and interactive. Our waitress was fantastic: walked us through the menu, offered genuinely helpful suggestions, and very attentive. I definitely recommend making a reservation. We had a reservation for two on a Wednesday evening at 5:30pm, which we made about 1-2 weeks beforehand. For drinks, I ordered a Shun mocktail with Yuzu + jasmine, which was super refreshing, as well as DreamLife (orange, vanilla, citrus, orange blossom water, and soda), which tasted like an orange creamsicle. Miso soup was bigger than the typical small bowl, filled with savory shiitake mushrooms, flavor was excellent, although I do wish it came out a bit hotter. Sashimi platter included maguro, salmon, hamachi, kanpachi, madai, fish roe, toro, scallop, assorted house pickles. Handrolls were perfect 2-3 bite rolls. We ordered the beef tartare, red crab, hamachi, spicy scallop, eel, and toro. The fish was fresh and high-quality. We lastly ordered matcha misu, which was a matcha twist on tiramisu, light and creamy, and lovely finish to the meal. Overall, an excellent dining experience with standout fish, thoughtful service, and a cozy atmosphere. Would absolutely return!

We were very excited to finally get a reservation at Gi-Jin at a regular dinner time! The vibe and service was exceptional. Our hostess was so helpful, fun and friendly. However, for the price and portions, it was disappointing. The food was delicious but we left still hungry. We ordered the edamame, dynamite crab plate (to share), beef tartare and shrimp tempura hand roll. The wine I had was also delicious - similar to a Sauvignon blanc with a touch of sage. I'd recommend to anyone but order a lot or leave hungry.

4-4.5 stars for food rounded up to 5 for excellent service Came here recently for a work event and there were the dynamite crab was a standout, an excellent fusion of flavors, the smokiness of the torched rice blending very well the lemon sauce and red crab. The bara chirashi is a nice way to try out some of the fish they have available for the day before springing for the nigiri. The hamachi crudo and beef tataki were both interesting flavor combinations, but the ponzu in the crudo overwhelmed the hamachi. Portion sizes are definitely on the small size. Service was very attentive and friendly. They have small tables so don't come with a group larger than 4.

Came for a girl dinner and shared a bunch of different plates. The cocktails and wine selection were good. The fish was so fresh and melts in your mouth! Our server was very knowledgable and helped decide whats good to share and have a good range. The space is small and intimate, and we were obsessed with the little chopsticks holders! If you need a nice spot for a dinner reservation and want quality sashimi this is the perfect spot!

Genuinely my favorite food spot in all of Pittsburgh, but certainly needs treated as a rare treat unless you've got ample money to throw around. I've made it a point to try and go at least once a year. They import their fish from Japan, so everything is exceptional quality (unlike any other I've ever had) and the taste experiences are incredible. The toro, both salmon and traditional tuna, are both to die for. The lighting and general vibe of the place are honestly just as appealing as the food, as it's the sort of place that makes you feel like you're partaking in an experience rather than just a meal. As said before, the quality is top notch, but you will shell out a good bit of money if you want to satisfy your appetite. The first time I went here, I spent approximately $140 on myself. The second time was in a group outing, paying for another person in the group, and we got a little loose with our ordering of food and drink. I think, with tip, it ended up being close to $450-$475. I nearly died when I saw that bill. Do I think it was worth it? Yes. Can I make it a regular thing? As someone who sometimes lives paycheck to paycheck, absolutely not. Hahaha. If you're planning on going, I would generally recommend reservations and booking about a month in advance. TLDR; The people who work there are knowledgable, the food is high quality and worth the price, but view this as a treat kind of place rather than a regular spot... that bill will hit you hard.

We had a reservation for two on a Wednesday, which was the soonest reservation we could book almost two months in advance. The wait was worth it! All of the food we ordered was scrumptious and the fish tasted very high quality. The matcha tiramisu was amazing and came in a small cup. The bathroom was fancy as well with a smart toilet. We parked in a parking garage for $10 since it was special event parking. Only street parking available near the actual restaurant which is very hard to get.

Visiting from out of town, this place was the perfect spot for wanting a great meal. Service was excellent as well. We were happy with all of our selections, can't really make a mistake as they were all excellent

This place is amazing. It was our first time here and the food was delicious. The service was great. Great people, great chefs.

Gi-jin is always an incredible experience! It can be difficult to get a reservation but it's worth it. My favorite items are the nigiri plates, they typically have one option with more standard fish and one with a chefs selection of fish, and the tuna pizza. The chocolate torte is a great way to end the meal! The service and atmosphere are top notch. There are limited tables, so if you're a party of 2, be aware that they seat you at the sushi bar. Definitely recommend Gi-Jin for a great night out

Great quality Japanese spot but far from authentic , the food prices are unreasonably high but taste fresh. The service was fantastic and ambiance was nice. I really enjoyed the atmosphere but some of the dishes were so expensive for bite size food , with no Japanese chefs in sight , it's silly. You won't leave full unless you get a onigiri. The ginger / wasabi plates cost extra if you ask for a refill and they automatically add a 3% service charge on top of your bill, just a lot of silly behavior that make you lose respect for the restaurant. My favorite was the onigiri and the toro but prices don't make sense.

Their selection of appetizers were great, and the quality of each was stellar. We attempted to try quite a few of them, and still have many we want to try. In our group, the tofu with an amazing dashi broth, the crab puffs, "sexy jalepenos", tempura kani, and the gyoza were the standouts. As I stated, though...everything we had was awesome. We all ordered a different ramen, and then shared. They were all phenomenal. The steak teriyaki was also great. Sushi wise, we didn't get to try as many as we had hoped. We were too busy reordering the appetizers. We did try the Crazy Mango roll, and ended up reordering that because it was so good. My kids were with me, and they love all things Mango, and this was phenomenal. For dessert, we had a few orders (and reorders!) of the fried bananas. Overall, I cannot speak higher of our experience. It is very clean, well kept up on, and the service was phenomenal. Quality wise, you can tell how much effort they put into the place purely on their presentation. I had to remark many times about how utterly beautiful some of their dishes were. This was not like our other AYCE experiences where they just rush food out to you. They actually put effort into their craft here, and it is quite obvious. We will definitely be back, and look forward to trying new things that we didn't get to before!

My usual order is the chicken katsu bento box, which comes with a good portion of crunchy sliced chicken katsu, rice, two dumplings, a California roll, and miso soup. It feels like a solid, filling meal with enough variety to make it satisfying. The only downside with my most recent takeout order was the sauce placed in the middle of the container. I'm not sure exactly what it was, and after tasting it, it wasn't really for me. Because of the layout of the takeout container, some of it spilled into the rice and rolls. Next time, I'd probably ask for that sauce on the side in a separate container.

It honestly raised the bar for sushi in Pittsburgh and feels like the kind of restaurant you'd expect to find in a much bigger city. The restaurant is located right on Mt Washington, giving a good view of the city. The interior looks appropriate for a sushi restaurant, but due to the massive windows lacked the darker vibe of other upscale restaurants. I've been to hundreds of sushi spots and the interior was merely average. Otaru seems to struggle with its identity. It needs to either commit to being an upscale restaurant or relax and simply be a quality one. The wait staff were kind and prompt, but at times appeared they may be less experienced. We were brought hot (paper) towels and edamame. We ordered the fried tako balls as an app. I personally don't prefer tako and found it very dense and chewy and the overall flavors were too undeveloped. The hand rolls were well filled and were easy to eat due to being more of a taco configuration than a true hand roll. The nori was not too tough, lending to a pleasant experience. The nigiri and sashimi were also good. The nigiri were good, but not as elevated as another upscale sushi spot in the city. They were still very good, but not quite excellent. They either need a bit more development or to be relaxed and served as two per order and the price adjusted slightly upward. If you take one thing from this review, let it be this. The yellowtail jalepeno cups were astonishing. By far this was the most well executed dish I have ever eaten and the best sushi dish I've had. They appear to be wrapped in toasted sesame seed wrappers. If you've had Hapi mixed crackers they give the same great flavor of the "fried chicken" pieces but with yuzu vinaigrette and the umami of the fish. I will certainly be back solely because of how good they were.
