Two of us made reservations for Kiku on Christmas Eve. Kiku is tucked away inside Station Square and the inside is fairly large with multiple tables. We decided to go with the sukiyaki hot pot for two which was an excellent choice. The hot pot broth had such an incredible umami flavor that we were scraping the bottom of the pot to get it all. I would come back solely for this dish!

The food was was fresh, and they honestly undercharge. The ambience, dedication of the sushi chef, and beautifully plated food were phenomenal. I wish I found Kiku sooner. They are much more authentic than other restaurants and very committed to good food and service. Please see for yourself!

4.5 stars. Kiku Japanese restaurant introduced sushi to Pittsburgh in 1983 and is inside the Commerce Court office building in Station Square. (Over the years, I must have unknowingly walked past this restaurant hundreds of times!) Its menu has many options for appetizers (e.g., gyoza, takoyaki, yakitori, and edamame), soups, salads, entrees (e.g., katsu, teriyaki, and tempura), hot pot (e.g., shabu shabu), sushi bar (dozens of rolls, nigiri, sashimi, maki, and temaki), and non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages (e.g., tea, ramune, wine, beer, sake, sho hi, whiskey, and gin). My husband and I ate one lunch here. We saw a sign that explained that the construction of the restaurant is a traditional nail-less Kyoto style. Our waiter promptly and courteously served us. Here are my reviews for what we ate: Jade East and Kiku Punch - 5 stars - These two cocktails tasted delicious. The Jade East contained melon liquor, vodka, pineapple juice, and cream. I forget the exact ingredients of the Kiku Punch, but it also had a wonderfully fruity flavor. Tuna-avocado roll - 4.5 stars - These sushi rolls contained very fresh tuna, avocado, and cucumber and tasted very good. Teriyaki salmon - 5 stars - My salmon was cooked perfectly, and its sauce and sides of vegetables and miso soup were very flavorful. Zaru soba - 4.5 stars - My husband ate these chilled noodles with dipping sauce. He added on a side of tempura shrimp. He liked these foods very much. Taiyaki - 4.5 stars - For dessert, I ate a red-bean taiyaki with a side of green-tea ice cream, and I liked the flavors.

A friend and I were in town and he was in the mood for sushi. This was the best ranked place within a few miles of our hotel so we gave it a try. It is located in one of the Station Square buildings which was oddly very vacant. I don't know if there was any closer street parking but we parked in the parking structure across the street. It has a fancy looking entrance and the carpeted floors give it a bit of a 'restaurant in a hotel' feel but the inside is nicely decorated. You are greeted and immediately given warm hand towels which was a nice way to start the meal. I actually wasn't very hungry so I just ordered a spicy tuna roll. Most places just put your cuts of spicy tuna roll on a plain looking plate, but the presentation of a simple roll here was very nice and the flavor was great. My friend ordered a big plate of Nigiri sushi. I wish I would have remembered to take a picture because it's presentation was also great and he said every bite was excellent. I will definitely return if ever in the area again.

My favorite sushi place in Pittsburgh. Before eating you get hot towels for your hands. Great service and nice atmosphere. Super large pieces of fish that taste fresh. The age dashi tofu was so good it made me start eating tofu at home. The broth is so good I wish it came with more. I've also had the set course here before and it is also so good. Great variety of dishes and left very full.

This place seems authentic, but the taste didn't quite meet my expectations. I feel like I've had better quality and value for raw fish at other Japanese restaurants. The sashimi tasted a bit fishy, which was disappointing... However, the ambiance and service were great.

Probably be best and freshest taste of sushi in Pittsburgh! This is a hidden gem located in a very deserted part of station Square. Few places offer such a variety with fish coming from global sources. The Uni was so very authentic and delicious that I had to order another piece! The Toro was surprisingly too chewy and not as fresh as I would have preferred, especially for the price. Portion sizes were average, but the prices were definitely premium. I spent over $100 including tip for what you see pictured. The bowl had a great variety, including octopus, which was not too chewy since they cut it very thin, but also included to know when I specifically asked to replace it with something else like salmon. Nonetheless, it was good, but not sure if it was worth a $35 price. The miso soup which was included in the meal was very good with a nice mixture of complementary ingredients. The service was friendly and attentive although there was only two tables being served at the time. I would consider going back if I'm in the area just for the variety and freshness, but would be a lot more careful in what I order because of the premium pricing.

GOOD ASS FOOD! I can not say more. The sushi was great and the dessert was awesome. The appetizer were ok, some need some work. Great great great service, knowledgeable, kind, attentive!!! Good looking place, nothing special or over the top and not average. Was a decent ambiance. Not fine dining. But was pretty good. I would def come back.

Finally came back after a year to try other stuff on their menu. This time it was omakase! I didn't expect that it would so filling but needless to say. It was! Staff are very friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a traditional Japanese restaurant, this is it! It's one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in town. I would recommend that you stick with the traditional Japanese options if you can. They're worth every penny.

The oldest authentic Japanese restaurant in all of Pittsburgh and my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh.

The restaurant is located right on Mt Washington, giving a good view of the city. The interior looks appropriate for a sushi restaurant, but due to the massive windows lacked the darker vibe of other upscale restaurants. I've been to hundreds of sushi spots and the interior was merely average. Otaru seems to struggle with its identity. It needs to either commit to being an upscale restaurant or relax and simply be a quality one. The wait staff were kind and prompt, but at times appeared they may be less experienced. We were brought hot (paper) towels and edamame. We ordered the fried tako balls as an app. I personally don't prefer tako and found it very dense and chewy and the overall flavors were too undeveloped. The hand rolls were well filled and were easy to eat due to being more of a taco configuration than a true hand roll. The nori was not too tough, lending to a pleasant experience. The nigiri and sashimi were also good. The nigiri were good, but not as elevated as another upscale sushi spot in the city. They were still very good, but not quite excellent. They either need a bit more development or to be relaxed and served as two per order and the price adjusted slightly upward. If you take one thing from this review, let it be this. The yellowtail jalepeno cups were astonishing. By far this was the most well executed dish I have ever eaten and the best sushi dish I've had. They appear to be wrapped in toasted sesame seed wrappers. If you've had Hapi mixed crackers they give the same great flavor of the "fried chicken" pieces but with yuzu vinaigrette and the umami of the fish. I will certainly be back solely because of how good they were.

I wouldn't really call this a supper club to be honest but the place definitely carries a house music bar vibe and the back bar area and seating is very dimly lit, perfect for cozying up and enjoying a drink late night. The ladies' room was so dark, I mistook it for a storage area because I could only make out a white ladder in the corner that was being used as cute shelving. The place is seat yourself. Our waiter was not super friendly and didn't offer to give us napkins or anything when our wobbly table caused our drinks to splash all over the place. The cook served our chicken with a big smile and happy interaction and we really loved his personality. The bartender also stopped by to bus our table and he was very pleasant as well. We enjoyed the perfectly fried small plate cauliflower with the plum sauce and the fried cheese/garlic wonton bites with the sriracha mayo spicy dipping sauce. The fried chicken breast on the large plate was slightly overcooked with a maple gochuchang sauce that was very bland. We were so thankful that the large plate fried chicken came with a side salad to offer some respite from the heaviness of the fried dishes. It would have been great to have some side acidic or fresh vegetable options like Kimchi or something. Maybe we tried the wrong dishes and there are other not fried things that are delicious? The dirty martini cocktail was just so-so, not really much flavor at all, but the mojito was very good and refreshing. It's probably a good late-night place for a bite and drink.
