This is a cool little spot, and a welcome addition to the offerings in this beach resort area. I travel far and frequently, so I can attest to the fact that the seasonings on the black Agua chile shrimp are as they claim... Yucatán traditional with a modern flare. Pork and chicken tacos were also delicious. Fresh corn tortillas are always the best. It is a newer place, however, and 3 stars is my top score due to some apparent growing pains... for example: 1. Bottled beer was not cool but not cold. Easily fixed with an ice bucket, but that shouldn't happen. 2. Agua shrimp Is a ceviche, we did request raw... However, it needed a little more time in the acid to firm up a tiny bit. Also, if there were grilled avocados, radishes and microgreens as stated on the menu, I didn't find them. Same for the passionfruit on the house ceviche. Also, house ceviche menu price is $22, but it rang up at $25 on the receipt. 3. We each ordered a pork and a chicken taco. They came plated with 2 chicken on one plate and two pork on the other. Not thrilled to have to fix this ourselves. Chicken taco could have been a little more full. 4. Cocktail napkin instead of dinner size. I'm sure they will improve on the details, but I really liked it overall, and hope they are here when we return in 9 months. read more

We had a great meal at Alebrije. The Pozole was a. Incredible delight. Try the salsa sampler- delicious way to start. The STEAK ARACHERRA was amazing. We also enjoyed the Poblano Chicken Tacos, Carne Asada Tacos and Poblano Pepper Rajas Tacos. The rice and beans were also expertly prepared. After dinner, the executive chef came out and greeted us. He wanted feedback on the meal. He told us that the recipes were authentic recipes taken from different regions of Mexico. He told us not only were the ingredients fresh but they were grown in Mexico: e.g. the avocados and poblano peppers. We had great food, great service and a great time read more

This is a good choice if you are looking for some Mexican food. Being from California and having so many opportunities for true Mexican dishes, this is the first place we've had a good experience. The carne asada steak taco was great. The Habenero salsa was fabulous and their classic margarita was fantastic. read more

Don't go. Really nice people but two of six out of our group got food poisoning the night after eating here.

We went last night for dinner, food was fine but expensive. We only really had 2 problems. The first which is less of an issue is that our waiter took the pitchers to refill the water at the start of our meal and never came back with them, we ended up asking another server some time later and she brought us more water but we had already finished our meals at that point. The other issue we had was when we received our bill we were informed by our waiter that they couldn't split our bill by item, the most they could do for us is split the bill 3 ways evenly. My wife and I tried to pay for our portion in cash to avoid the fee for using a card but he said that if one of the members in our party was paying with a card we all had to which seems kind of bizarre. Our total bill was $141.03 and we all ended up being charged $56.50 a person which is more than our bill was. I would recommend taking your business elsewhere, especially if your party needs to have separate bills. read more

Im giving 1 star because there was no option for Zero. It was the most horrible food I've tasted. my husband and I eat Mexican food at least 4 times a month. This was trash. Service was terrible. I ordered chicken fajitas, I got some sauced chicken fat with hard black beans and rice that tasted like Mr. Clean mopping stuff. read more

I ordered chicken tacos and they were mediocre. Chicken was juicy but very bland. The oil the chips were fried in tasted bitter, and the chips were stale. The oil needs to be switched out or something because the bitter flavor was very strong. The staff was very friendly and food came out pretty fast. read more

From SoCal so we know good Mexican food and this one was very average. My wife got the enchiladas which were pretty good but the salsas were very bland and they didn't have their own hot sauces or very good options to give the dishes more flavor. They need more flavorful menu options and a regal on their salsas. I make a better homemade salsa, so maybe they need a new chef or someone that knows how to make flavors pop read more

We visited Alebrije 2 days ago and had a wonderful meal. The guacamole, homemade tortilla chips, enchiladas and Mahi Mahi tacos were amazing (Also, the Cadillac Margarita was delicious). The service was excellent also.....friendly and attentive. The Restaurant is comfortable and clean.......a great place for families, etc. Sorry we'll only be here another week but will be sure to stop in before we go home. read more

Really great selection, very friendly staff, and the food is delicious. There's some growing pains with the service as to be expected with a new restaurant, but we're happy to have a new, quality option. The mahi mahi dish was so good and the tacos were delicious, but could have used a lime on the side and salsa. A couple tips/suggestions: we were shocked (we're Mexican) that the aguachiles and ceviches weren't served with chips or tostadas. That's like serving salsa with only a spoon. We asked for chips and they were both good. However, a spicy element option would have been nice- maybe a chile oil or peppers. There was 0 spice to any of the dishes we ordered. Some Mexican decor would have also been a nice touch. read more

Amazing restaurant! The owner, staff, food, drinks and ambience are all incredible. They make you feel like home and go above and beyond to ensure everything you order is to your liking. We ordered Agua Jamica (the leaves are flown in fresh from Mexico), chips and salsa trio, sopes with shredded chicken, and carne asada tacos. Everything was made fresh and absolutely delicious. The carne asada was the best I've had both in and outside of Hawai'i. Highly recommend this restaurant, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. read more

My husband and I came down the hill from Waimea to give their dinner a try. I had a lovely brunch there with a friend a week or so ago, and definitely recommend their brunch as well. The staff is friendly and attentive and the restaurant is comfortable and not too noisy. I ordered the three tacos, two shrimp and one chicken, so I don't know how the mahi is. We also ordered the chips and salsa sampler and my husband had the mango ceviche. The tacos were amazing! The tortillas are made in house, the portions are perfect, the spices and sauces are rich and spicy without overpowering the sweet shrimp or chicken. Both the chicken and shrimp were cooked perfectly. The salsas are all very different, one pico de gallo, one green, and one chili tomato, not too hot but big flavor and a little heat. It was really fun to try each one with the different tacos flavors, and the ceviche. The mango ceviche has Ono, and is rich and flavorful, and we used the chips to scoop up ceviche and load up each of the salsas. This place is definitely worth the trip down the hill and we will be back, VERY SOON. So glad to have really good Mexican food done really well with really friendly , accommodating staff! read more

We were super surprised to see a New Mexican restaurant open in the shops at Mauna Lani. It's a soft opening now but we had a great meal and expect more to come as their hours and menu expand. Though the evening menu is shown as only ceviche you can opt for cooked shrimp and seared fish, so raw is an option. The ceviche dishes are pretty big, meal sized, and delicious. There's a full bar and wine available. We will return for breakfast soon. This is a high end fresh ingredient Mexican restaurant, not a greasy taco joint. As a celiac, I have difficulty finding safe places to eat but here they have a high knowledge of food allergies and intolerances. There's a dedicated fryer for their corn tortillas so the chips are gluten free, they don't use flour tortillas. Most items on the menu are GF and their breakfast menu has a lot of healthy options that are vegan and GF. Highly recommend. read more

Wow! I have been waiting for this restaurant for 3 months to open and they did not disappoint. From the moment I came up the stairs I was greeted kindly with Hilda. I sat at the bar and started to chat with Tina, Trina and Kyla. They all were knowledgable and had great attitude with smiles and guided me onto some of their menu items. I started with their coffee, which was FANTASTIC! I am not a coffee drinker but I would encourage all to try it. Warm, flavorful and a hint of cinnamon (but not overpowering). I also had to get a Mexican cola, which we all know are delicious and very hard to find here on the island. The inside of the restaurant looks and felt clean, organized and updated. I could definitely see myself here after golf for the ceviche bar or in the morning for a chilaquiles plate. I couldn't stay too long so I opted to get one of the pastries (concha's). OMG! SO GOOD!!! Fluffy, slightly crusty, sweet (not too sweet) and SO FLAVORFUL. Went extremely well with my coffee! I ended up getting more to bring to my team to share. I am looking forward to coming back to see the amazing staff and taste more of their absolutely delicious food! Great job Alebrije! First impressions are everything and I cannot wait to go back! Close your eyes and imagine the best Mexican food you've ever had, maybe you're in Tijuana, San Diego, Santa Fe, or even Mexico City, imagine that delicious bite of the perfect enchilada: chorizo, tortilla, salsa roja, mozzarella, Mexican crema, now open your eyes. Could it be, you aren't in the heart of Mexico at all, you're in Hawaii, on the big island, and after mediocre restaurant after mediocre restaurant you found yourself spinning in desperation and out of your vertiginous haze you have finally arrived. Maybe you've seen manta rays at soaring through the depths at night, maybe you've plumbed the coral kingdom of captain cook, or maybe you've just kicked back at the beach looked out at the sea with dolphins jumping in the distance and thought to yourself, where can I go in this paradise for some food that could match this natural splendor. I am telling you now that you CAN find it, on the second floor of a strip mall tucked in a corner of Waimea: Alebrije. Incredible margaritas, incredible food. We ate there 3 times over 8 days because they produce excellence every time. Don't mind the location, don't mind how many people are there, don't mind the decorations outside, the food and service are literally outstanding, my favorite Mexican food in a decade. read more
