After arriving, this was the first spot we hit up for food. We all got the fish and chips which were decent but the fish was honestly over fried and crunchy vs soft. My only complaint is that fish and chip menu says that it is a "single mixed" without any explanation of exactly what that means. Stick to the fish and chips here. Pretty small portion for $18 but I understand the markups with tourists and whatnot. You get three cute little fried fish nuggets on a little basket of fries. The main reason I'm even wasting my time writing a review is just to show you this chicken sandwich. You could get a better chicken sandwich from McDonalds, or maybe prison. A tasty spot for fried fish but not earth shattering. We ordered Fried Oysters, Coconut Shrimp, Fish & Chips, and the Fish Tacos. Nicely fried. I wasn't a fan of the tartar sauce-- the mayonnaise overpowered the other flavors which are the hallmark of a good tartar sauce. I liked the coconut shrimp the best. There is outdoor seating right outside of the ordering counter. It can get a bit chilly though as it is on the water and windy. This is one our favorite places on the Big Island- or any Island. Maybe the best fish tacos in the world. I obviously haven't had all of them- but they are in my top 3 all time. Soooo gooood! We were staying at the resorts that are walking distance to this restaurant. This was located in a shopping center that had plenty of parking and other options for food as well as shops. We came here twice because of how much we enjoyed this place! We had the coconut shrimp (picture included). With it comes a side of pineapple cole slaw and two scoops of rice. The second time we came, we had the fish tacos, which came with a side of tortilla chips. Both were delicious and fulfilling! You order at the booth and pay. You then take a ticket, and they will call your name when your meal is ready. Be sure to keep your ticket so you can turn it in when picking up your food. Nice little spot tucked away in the back of other shops in the Kings shopping center. No indoor seating but there are several tables under a large rainproof perogola cover right beside them, surrounded on 3 sides by the small manmade lake. Like everything else in the islands it's not cheap, but that's how things are here. We read the reviews before we went and decided to stick to the mainstay of fish and chips. We were pleasantly surprised. Each order came with 3 decent sized breaded and fried pieces of a mild, somewhat dense, whitefish. I didn't what fish it was, but it tasted just fine. The older ladies who work there appear native, but are actually Filipinas (my wife has a good ear for tagolag). They are quite pleasant. Like everywhere, if you smile and treat them with respect you'll receive the same in return. The fish was sitting on top of enough golden French fries to feed a squad of starved Marines. Drove here from Kailua Kona just for the fresh fish and chips and was not disappointed. The restaurant is a walk up style place but they do have outdoor seating nearby. I went for the shrimp and fish both breaded with fries, tartar sauce and extra lemon slices. The fish was amazing and very fresh. Same for the shrimp. Ordering was a little confusing and they did come across a bit rude because apparently you can't order two of the same thing on their two item option which isn't clear on the menu. one of the highest rating in the area. located by the pond. it's basically a shack that you grab and go and find yourself a table nearby in the pavilion by the lake. not much a service and you can't really see sunset either. just a quick eat will be fine. i had the combo fish and oyster combo, only two fish fingers and three oysters, so basically pay more but less food, the fish only has 3 pieces of fish , and they take out one piece and replace with 3 oysters but adding more money. i dont think it's a good deal. the chips are crispy but i dont think the oyster is very fresh. it has a strange taste to it. the fish is flaky and flavorful. read more

This appears to be a mom and pop joint, not a chain restaurant, which we prefer to frequent and keep money in the pockets of local owners instead of giant conglomerates. You order at the counter and eat outside on tables facing the water. This is a causal joint so it's dog and kid friendly. The food takes a little while as it's fresh made and it comes out hot, and it is good. We came with a party of 8 and nobody left hungry. The boys ordered shrimp po boy, crab cakes and said they were delicious and spectacular. We also ordered the fish and chips which were crispy and perfectly done . The fries here are hot and crunchy and just the right amount of salty. The two piece combo we ordered coconut shrimp and tempura which was excellent. I don't eat seafood so I ordered a tempura appetizer (pupu) and it came with 4 large pieces each of carrot, purple sweet potato, zucchini I split this with my 16 year old. The dipping sauce was not authentic ponzu sauce but some kind of sweet soy sauce/teriyaki sauce. They also have a chicken sandwich on the menu for non seafood eaters. We didn't take any photos since other people have taken enough. You'll have to time your visit if you want to eat here and prepare yourself for a bit of a wait and a longish line. read more

I really struggled communicating with the cashier. We ordered the the 3 choice with fries and I chose two fish and 1 calamari. She kept typing 2 choice with fish and calamari. Their fries.. arguably the plain best fries I've had from anywhere I've been. So crisp and yum. Lightly battered. Fried to perfection. If they would make a garlic fries version.. that would be amazing! They got this deep fry game down! Fish was tender, not dry from being over cooked. Calamari was also cooked just right. Not tough and chewy at all. Batter a perfect golden brown. So crispy and good. I'm not a fan of coleslaw so I didn't try it. Their special guava sauce is extra. It's ok. Their tartar sauce is ok. Service is good. If their sauces were as bomb as their fish and chips I would give the 5th star in the rating. But their sauces could use some improvements. Wife had turned thumbs down on this place a few nights ago. Today she was on a diving trip, so I came without her. Place opens at 11am, as not currently serving breakfast. Ordered the $15.49 pick Three. Ten minutes later, meal is ready in take out box to eat at the covered tables next to the lake. Got two six inch long tempura fish, two five inch long chicken strips, and two small coconut shrimp. The two scoops of rice took up more room than the six pieces of meat and fish. Most people would order fries instead of rice. The fish were fresh off the frying pan cooked fillets of ono covered by a thin layer of batter, not much flavor until added largely mayo based tartar sauce. The chicken strips also were temperature hot, white sliced chicken breast meat, tasteless until added bbq sauce. Definitely a waste of money to order this. The coconut shrimp were the best tasting of the three items, heavily battered, small but tasty, and went well with the sweet sauce on the side. Pineapple coleslaw had only a hint of pineapple taste, and was watery. Looking at the pictures of others, if you order a $13.49 pick one you get six shrimp, or three tempura fish. If you order a $14.49 pick two, you get four shrimp and two fish, probably the best deal for quantity of seafood. Place has good service, food was hot out of the kitchen, not a whole lot of flavor without the dipping sauces, and not enough meat/fish for the price. Go to Ippy's in Queen's Market, a quarter mile away, for better bang for the buck. Wife was right to skip this place. Eat the abundance of fries here too often and you won't be able to fit into that 18" wide airline seat back to the mainland, now that airlines are filling that middle seat. There are a bunch of tables right on the water that make eating here really great, plus it's quick. I opted for take out due to convenience and time. Ordered the fish and chips and a three choice basket: fish, calamari and fried oysters. Everyone enjoyed it, although my husband prefers cod/halibut with fish and chips. The kids loved the French fries, had a nice crispy outside. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw because it had pineapple in it, not chunks but there was the flavor of it in there. However this place is called island fish and chips so I guess it had to be somewhere. The prices are a lot for the amount of food, but I guess for the area it's pretty comparable. When we decided to order the 3 Entrée Meal and asked for 2 breaded shrimp and one fish, she tersely informed us that there was no "doubling up" on items. If you order the 3 item meal, it MUST be 3 separate items (why?!?). So we ordered the breaded shrimp and the coconut shrimp, and she seemed to barely tolerate our stupidity. Food: We ordered the 3 item meal, figuring that at $17.99, there would be plenty of food for 2 people to split for a light lunch. Look, I get that it's resort prices, so I wasn't expecting a huge abundance of food, but what we got for $18 was a serious disappointment. 2 small fish sticks, 4 small shrimp (2 coconut and 2 breaded), and a small handful of fries. Now everything was cooked to perfection, and tasted great, but the amount of food for that price was just sad. We also decided to split a soda for around $3.75 for a large, which means they made $3.50 in profit off that soda, but they charge $0.99 for refills anyway. Ambiance: Don't let the prices on the menu fool you. This place is plastic forks and paper napkins and ketchup packets. They do have a lovely covered pavilion overlooking the lagoon with a few tables and chairs from which you can enjoy the view while you eat. Bus your own table. read more

Beautiful location, but hard to find if you don't know that there is a back side of the shopping area. I had a 2 item basket with the tempura fish and coconut shrimp, and my husband had the 3 item basket with the fish, battered shrimp and calamari. Each were accompanied with pineapple cole slaw and fries. The coconut shrimp had a sweet sauce for dipping. They were very tasty, but only came with 3 very small shrimp. The 2 pieces of fish (Ono) came with tarter and cocktail sauce,and there was malt vinegar available as well. They were very good. My husband said is Calamari was just okay, but he too lied the fish and thought his shrimp were good as well. We also had the edamame which my kids loved and my fiancé had the fish sandwich. You walk up to order at a window and then they call your name when it's ready.
