You only have 10 minutes to board and our experience was not great as we were sent to 3 different buses and missed our bus due to this. We ended up having to wait another hour for another bus. I was so glad one of my coworkers told me about the ADO bus to leave the airport! A trip from the Cancun airport to the hotel zone was $7/$8 (a far cry from the $60 and then $40 the taxi drivers offered to go the same way) I also purchased a round trip to Tulum the next day for about $30. Really the only way to travel to Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Merida, and other nearby townships from Cancun short of renting a car. We went to Isla Mujeres, so I'll detail how to finagle that. The TL;DR version: download the ADO app, estimate 1.5-2.5 hrs between the island and the airport. When you land at the airport, withdraw pesos from the ATM (bring a card that doesn't charge you conversion fees like CapitalOne 360), and buy tickets at the designated ADO booth without leaving the airport premises (pirated tickets galore). - Cash only, and it's 98 pesos (US$5) to ADO Bus Terminal in Cancun metro. - Buy one way, because round trip tickets fix your time and they won't let you on earlier or later. The round trip savings are less than a US$1 anyway. Not worth sitting at the terminal for 45 mins on your way back (where do you think I am writing this right now?). From the bus terminal, get a taxi for 70 pesos to go to Puerto Juarez. Don't ask how much; just offer: "Setenta (70) pesos al Puerto Juarez?" They'll counter anywhere between 150 and 250, but walk a few steps out, cross the street to go to McDonalds, and a cab driver there will take you. Ignore the counter offers on your way to McD, and on the third-ish try, you'll get a nice gentleman to take you. Pay upon arrival, ofc. This leg should take 15 mins. (To put your savings in context, 75 pesos is a strong, yummy mezcal-rita/cocktail at happy hour on the island.) (Also, the cab price that locals pay is 50-80 pesos for this route, so 70 isn't bad.) Get to the port. By now you hopefully have a PDF of the Ultramar ticket that you bought online, but if not, do that, and buy round trip. It comes with a QR code, and you can use your return ticket any time within the next 6 months. The actual boat ride is 20 mins even (they claim 18 but we left 3 mins late); add in 5 mins for boarding, and board 20-30 mins ahead of time to cool down in AC. If it's in the evening, sit on the top deck for the sunset and ocean winds. Huge error on the website, btw: it says a boat leaves every half hr in the morning, but as of now (Jul 2021), it leaves every hour on the hour, so nota bene there! On July 13 2024 we left orizaba to mexico Df. The bus was late one hour. The smell on the bus was overpowering with extremely urine odor. We made the five hour trip barely been able to breathe. About two hours into our journey, an inspection was done. I explained to him the urine problem, and he told me he was going to look in to the matter. Nothing was done. This bus terminal, in the middle of Cancun proper, is a bustling enterprise. The ticket counter is often understaffed, but is as efficient as can be with what they have. The ADO buses serve neighboring cities and, like Europe, arrive on time, and depart on time. If the bus is scheduled to leave at 1pm and you show up at 1:10, you gotta wait for the next one. Prices are dirt cheap compared to USA prices. Example is a trip from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen is $6 per person one way. And, if you ask for the "promotional" fare, it's even cheaper than that! So, what do you get for your fare? A clean, very modern Volvo bus. Air conditioning, large comfortable seats that actually recline ( not like a plane seat, these really recline) televisions and an on board bathroom. The staff are friendly and patient with tourists like us. Currently the still require a mask of any kind while in the station itself, but once you board the bus, it is optional. I very much recommend this service to any traveler in the region. They also have an app to download if that is your speed. Great travels amigos! read more

Truly horrible experience with ADO Bus at Cancun airport. Yes, the other reviews are solid and this is an *affordable* option - but I've been waiting at the airport for THREE HOURS for the direct bus to Tulum. (The woman at the ticket office told me to wait for the direct bus vs. other buses that pass through Playa del Carmen as it would be faster.) At first, I decided the promised 1-hr wait was no biggie. To kill time, I went to Air Margaritaville - the only eating establishment in the area. My regular cocktail drink cost $31 USD(!!!). After another hour waiting for the bus, the employees could give me no update and no ETA, only "maybe in another 40 minutes or an hour." Meanwhile, the very aggressive crowd of taxi/shuttle hawkers kept offering immediate shared rides to Tulum - as cheap as $50. After another 30 minutes, I asked about a refund - the first employee said he could only give me 50 percent of my ticket cost back, and the ticket office flat out refused, saying there was nothing they could do but give me travel credit (which I cannot use). When the bus finally arrived, it was completely full. My seat # (I had requested a window when I bought the ticket) was already occupied and I was told there is no assigned seating, despite what the ticket says. I wish I had just paid the extra $60-70 for a shared ride or rental car; this was a waste of my first travel day and a bummer way to start a vacation. read more

This is a great, inexpensive service available to tourists wanting to not hassle with taxis (or the negotiating). I took the bus from the Cancun airport to downtown Cancun, and back. There are power outlets on the bus, but the wifi was nonexistent. At this time (December 2017) the cost is 72/76 pesos, which is a great bargain versus taxis. However, it only goes downtown, and to the other Yucatan cities...so if you are going to the Hotel Zone where the majority of the hotels in Cancun are, you will either have to pay the direct taxi, or go downtown with the ADO bus and take a regular bus (but this will take much longer, and is probably cost efficient for less than 3 people). I was confused on the trip to the airport, but the driver asks which airline and knows the terminals, but I felt like mine was skipped since the order was different than when I was picked up. You're able to walk to the other terminals and there's a free shuttle, but there's not really a map anywhere to figure it out. read more

Great experience...despite not being able to print my tickets or download them or bring them up on the useless app. From the hotel zone, we rode the R1 city bus (12 pesos as of 2/19) to the ADO terminal downtown and got a ride to Playa del Carmen for 78 pesos or so. The service and price is unbeatable. The station isn't special, but the workers allowed me on with just a few screenshot of my ticket receipt (thanks) and it's across the street from a McDonald's if you want some McSican food. read more

While not in the Cancun region, I took ADO throughout Veracruz for years. I got very motion sick on one bus route through the mountains and asked the bus driver at the next stop if I had time to get air and use the bathroom. I was gone for less than 3 minutes, and he left without me. We were in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, I could speak Spanish and knew my whereabouts, but this was extremely dangerous as a solo female traveler. The ADO attendant told me the bus could not turn around even though I could have run to it and stopped it on the road when I exited the bathroom. She also said I had to buy a new ticket and there was nothing they could do to help. As always, I never leave things behind, but I had my luggage below, and everything was taken. If you take ADO, use the bathroom on board and never leave the bus, even if it is a 7-hour ride, as it was in my case. I would say you are better off using a taxi or your hotel shuttle option, but last time in Tulum, our driver stole our friend's phone from her, and we didn't notice until he drove off. As always, get a purse or bag and always keep it tight to your chest. Never leave your things unattended! read more

The best way to travel from Cancun to PDC and Tulum! Was about $10 US to Tulum and the bus was comfortable, had USB charge ports and was clean. Nicer than any Greyhound bus in the US. Felt safe and they took a lot of precautions for covid. Make sure you book from their website and not from third parties. Third party sites tried to charge us $40 US for tickets that were originally $10. read more

There is no better way to get to the Cancun airport or to downtown! After landing in Cancun we fought our way through all the salespeople and out into the loading area. Tons of taxis and resort shuttles were waiting, but we fought through those too, straight to the ADO pickup. So Mexico is hot in the summer, like burst into flames hot! Many taxis do not have air conditioning and some don't even have windows that roll down. But for only $9 you can catch a ride on the huge ADO bus featuring soft padded seating and the coldest air conditioning in the state! Cheaper and a much more enjoyable ride also as we were not weaving in and out of traffic like many of our taxi rides that week. It was super easy to purchase our tickets, we only had to wait a few minutes, and the driver helped load up our bags. This is definitely the best mode of transportation to get you to downtown Cancun or back to the airport! read more

We caught the ADO bus from Cancun airport to Playa. As soon as we left the terminal and exited outside, there was a small outdoor Margaritaville. Just a bit further to the right was a small red popup cart/tent/stand like where you'd buy popcorn at the zoo or drop a car at valet. This little booth sold us two tickets on the next bus for about $9-10 each. The next bus was set to arrive in, oh, 15 min or so. We loaded our luggage underneath the bus (no large bags on the bus) and enjoyed a terrible (loud) movie with Paul Reiser and a dying father dubbed in Spanish on the ride. Our Canadian seatmates had been to Pdc a bunch and pointed out interesting stuff (Xcaret, Cirque du Soleil) on the dusky/dark ride. I'd 100% recommend ADO (it was on Trip Advisor or Lonely Planet) and loved the service coming and going from pdc and Cancun. Clean, air con, a bathroom and a quick trip (about an hour). No wifi, as far as I could tell. We took a cab once or twice but ADO was the best option for long rides. read more

Booked the bus from Cancun to Puerto Morelos at the station for $37 pesos per person. The bus is air conditioned with reclining seats and tv screens. The free wifi advertised doesn't seem to work at all. Also when the bus driver stopped at Puerto Morelis and we made our way down to the door, he started to drive off, so had to yell at him to stop so we could get off the bus. read more

Horrible company. The bus driver didn't feel like stopping me at my stop as there was 'too much traffic to enter the city' (Puebla), so he left me on the highway between Puebla and CDMX. When I asked compensation for the Uber cost I was basically blow off. Unprofessional thieves. read more

Hands down the most affordable way to get around in Cancun . The busses are the big tour bus style bus with AC , WiFi, and tv screens. They are pretty clean and if your willing to try these out on an adventure then its worth it . Even if it's just to get to the airport or hotel. You can also take these a bit further as well but it might take more careful planning as they only depart / arrive to some locations a couple times a day. Also carry coins because if you need a bathroom almost every place is pay only including this bus terminal. read more

Love us by the ADO bus station, it's easy inexpensive and safe. I travel to Playa del Carmen at least one a week for business and because I'm a local I can enjoy the locals discount. It's still inexpensive even if you are not a local. I also like that every 30 Mins they have a departure to Playa del Carmen from Cancun. I would definitely recommend this terminal. The bad; when it is raining the taxi drivers tend to not want to take locals as they don't want to flood their cars. Always ask them what they will charge to your destination. read more

I regret using the bus leaving the airport. I loaded my suitcase along with my husbands in the lower section of the bus like everyone else. The bus made a couple of stops before going to the bus station. When I got off to get my bag it was gone. We reported the loss immediately, and they took our number and said they were sorry for the inconvenience. There are no measures in place to prevent people from stealing the bags. If you don't have any luggage it's an economical way to get around otherwise it's not worth it. read more

I had read great reviews about this bus and it didn't disappoint. If you want a cheap transportation option to Playa or Cancun, take this bus. Avoid the taxis like the plague as they are expensive and way overpriced! They have a ticket stand at the baggage claim area and is very easy to buy tickets. They take credit card so that is helpful. I took the bus to Playa and I only had to wait around 20 minutes before the next bus came. You have to walk around the terminal to the bus parking but the walk is not long. We took the ADO bus from Cancun to Merida - bought our tickets at the booth but was a little difficult with my minimal Spanish and the ticket seller's zero English. The terminal is a far cry from the typical dirty and sketchy Greyhound stations in the US. This terminal was clean and comfortable. Hoy en el autobús de Mérida a Cancún tuvimos un encontronazo lamentable y patético (# de bus 0291; # de trayecto 1410338). Mi pareja fue a dejar la maleta en el equipaje; el empacador le notó el acento español y decidió aprovecharse de su condición de turista. Le quería quitar la botella de tequila que llevaba sellada como souvenir, la botella de jamaica (también sellada) y hasta la salsa de chile habanero, entre otras cosas. Alegó que no se podía documentar alcohol. Llamó a su supervisora y, muy grosera, me dijo que eso venía en los términos y condiciones (que seguramente ni ella ha leído). Los leí en el acto y, en efecto, no decían nada, salvo que no se podía viajar en estado de ebriedad (no era el caso). Le pedí que me indicara la cláusula en donde venía eso y me dijo que yo la buscara, que no era su deber (claro, me viene a exigir que cumpla con algo que no viene escrito en ningún lado). Al final, después de que yo intervine, nos dejó meter todo, pero tuvimos que meter las cosas en diferentes maletas...una ridiculez. He viajado muchísimas veces en ADO y jamás se han atrevido a revisarme una maleta. Solo lo hicieron por joder a un extranjero y quedarse con sus salsas y el tequila. Pésima experiencia. read more
