This place was just ok. The inside was cute and sleek and the staff were friendly, but the food wasn't that great in my opinion. I wouldn't totally write it off and would be willing to try again, but I didn't love it. I ordered the yuzu shio and for starters I was disappointed in the lack of meat that was in the dish? The description states black truffle meatballs (plural) and there was one singular small meatball. Then there was one slice of chicken and one slice of pork. Idk just seemed skimpy. Overall flavoring was a bit off too. If I returned I would order a different dish.
Came here recently and honestly the vibes are the best part. We sat at the bar and the bartender was super helpful about the drinks and the menu. The atmosphere is sooo cozy and cute -- perfect for a date night or a girls night out. Service was AMAZING. Like actually top notch -- super friendly, attentive, and made everything easy. Food was... just okay. Not bad at all, just didn't wow me the way I hoped. The ramen was solid but not something I'm dreaming about later lol. BUT major points for the drinks -- they have Japanese highballs and shochu, which is such a win and made the whole experience way more fun. Would definitely come back for the vibe + drinks.
I think we are very lucky to have a lot of good ramen in Portland. It is so good that I was disappointed when I went to Japan, as I didn't think the ramen there was any better than here! Toya is a really good one. They serve chicken based broth, and you do not miss the pork! I had the shoyu black, which is really rich and flavorful. My dining companion had the old school shoyu, which is clear, but still with a deep umami chicken flavor. The meats are really succulent and tender, I think some of the best ramen meats in town--there's chicken paitan and cha siu. I really like it when the bamboo is seasoned, which it is here. The reason I gave them 4/5 is because they use thin straight noodles, and I prefer the thicker chewier type, but I appreciate that they give a good amount of noodles. Also had the Toya Caesar, which is a nice big size, I liked the crunchy panko. Service is warm and inviting--the waiter asked if we wanted an explanation of the menu and he gave a very thorough walkthrough! I saw some criticism that a lot of caucasians work here, but this restaurant is owned by a Japanese chef. It probably isn't possible to hire a predominantly Japanese workforce. I think they did an excellent job of executing the menu.
The pandemic robbed Portland of some of its finest late night dining options in a town that didn't have that many to begin with. I'm happy to inform you all that Toya Ramen has helped fill that void at least on weekends when they are open til midnight. I was able to get their fantastic Tom Yum ramen and Karaage on this evening and everything was great. In fact it was one of the best late night meals I've had in Portland. What is one of the most important components to a good late night spot? The vibe! Toya was moderately full on this Saturday night and the atmosphere was fantastic with great throwback hip hop and rnb jams and a lively clientele. The Caramel Apple cocktail was perfect and full of flavor while not being too sweet and had a nice bruleed apple garnish that I enjoyed. I finished my meal with a black sesame cheesecake that was the perfect way to end this meal and night.
We were craving ramen and this was the closest to where we were at. A little pricey in my opinion, but food was decent. I got the New School Shoyu, which was quite salty. My bf got the Shoyu Black, which I thought was super flavorful and not too salty.
There was a slight wait when we arrived at 7:30pm. We somehow got a table in 10 minutes. The ramen had thinly sliced red onions that were better than the sharply spicy diced red onions I had in the past. I asked the server what they do with the other half of the egg instead of giving the customer both. He jokingly said they throw it away. The black sesame cheesecake was absolutely divine except for the chunks of sesame in the graham cracker crust. I think it would taste better blitzed.
Such a gem, small space that feels upscale and reasonably priced. Lovely place with delicious food!! O.G. Abura Soba, Tonkatsu, and Hojicha Icecream. Definitely coming back to try other items and drinks
Color me obsessed. I usually prefer pork broth over chicken, but Toya's chicken broth was so delightfully flavorful and clean tasting that I didn't even feel like anything was missing. Service was great, our server was fun and a little quirky in a good Oregonian way. Ambiance was simple and clean, warm and inviting on a cold winter evening. I love this place so much and it's on our regular rotation now for when I'm in the Portland area.

Food: 4-4.5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Value: Pricing comparable to other like-ramen establishments, with an elevated ambiance. My group ordered the shoyu, tomyun ramen, karage, and center cut loin tonkatsu. I'm no ramen connoisseur, but overall the broth was refreshing and authentic to its flavors. Karage was like a Korean fried chicken soy garlic flavor. A good appetizer where the chicken was juicy and flavorful (4/5). What impressed me was the Tonkatsu, having several gyukatsus and tonkatsus all over, I was pleased by how soft and juicy the pork was, when I've had very dry experiences. The breading for mine wasn't the external crispy and crunchy but was crunchy with a good "sog" to it, actually the way I like it. Service was standard with good attention to refills and needs. The ambiance is excellent with great modern and traditional fusion. Good vibes for sure. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend this place for a good bowl of ramen, but I may not immediately come back here over trying new restaurants. It did a great job but fell short of blowing my mind for the fifth star.
This was the first time I've been to Toya Ramen & Bar. The wait staff are accommodating and friendly. The ambiance is beautiful and cozy. I wish I had taken a picture of the pretty lights enclosed in baskets. Maybe it was the acoustics in the space but I found it a little hard to hear everybody at our table of 6. The food got mixed reviews from my friends and I, however. I gave my ramen a 5/5. It was the spicy vegan one and I added a jammy egg to mine for a little protein. I liked the spice level (but might be a little much if you can't handle a bit of heat) and the soy milk gave it a nice creaminess which I liked for a change from typical ramen. I loved the silky texture of the house made noodles and the perfect amount of chew. Two of my friends shared a bowl of the vegan soupless ramen and an order of the tofu. The menu describes that ramen as containing several kinds of vegetables. Instead they received a bowl of flavored noodles and a couple pea pods. One other person in the group ordered the same ramen and it was the same for her, but she didn't mind as much. When the 2 that shared mentioned it later to the server she graciously took off about $1.80 from the price. Maybe they were running low on veggies in the kitchen? That's a they problem, not the diners' problem. My friends were disappointed in the dish, and said they would not be back. The others in our party enjoyed what they had and had no complaints. So there you have it. A mixed review, my friend.
Toya feels comfortably upscale, if that makes sense? It's a very nicely decorated space and it reads as a premium spot, but the prices are very reasonable. We loved the chicken karaage and the lime coconut sorbetto. I had the truffle ramen which was good, but not my favorite. My partner had the "regular" version and I liked hers better. Service was friendly if a bit slow, but in such a nice space we didn't mind.

Each bowl we explored showed depth, balance, and technique, from the richness of the broth to the precision in every topping. Yikes! We were quite disappointed by the meal and service. The staff looked at us when we entered the restaurant, walked toward us and then walked away. The ramen itself is confusing. I ordered the red miso, and there was sugar snap peas and asparagus, which is unusual. The individual ingredients themselves were fine but as a whole, it didn't taste like miso or spicy ramen. The overload of vegetables didn't seem to belong in a typical miso ramen dish (my go-to order) and rendered the broth quite bland. My husband ordered the black shoyu ramen, which was pretty one-note. Ota Tofu is one of my favorite spots in Portland for their amazingly fresh tofu, and it's right across from this ramen shop. Sadly, the tofu they used here was fried to a crisp, lost most of its flavor and had an unpleasant, sharp texture. read more

We planned a double date here and my partner and I started at the bar while we we waited for our friends. The bar service was great, starting out with the chicken karaage (great portion for the price) which was delicious and two tasty drinks: the Next of Kin and the Pleasure Principle. I even got to try a Japanese whiskey for the first time by recommendation of the bartender. I wasn't a fan of the gold flecks in one of our drinks but to each their own. I enjoyed watching the team make the ramen and other apps. After our friends arrived we were seated in the main area. It's a beautiful space and while we enjoyed our time, the main courses weren't the highlight. We got the ceviche which was okay, the katsu which was pretty fatty and the ramen that needed salt or something else. Overall, I think this could be a great options for drinks and apps! read more
I was happy to stop by Toya Ramen this rainy weekend. They were busy (as many ramen places are when it's cold and rainy) but got us in quickly. I loved the atmosphere - comfortable bench seating, huge windows looking out at downtown and the west side hills, semi-open kitchen, great lighting and decor, etc. Staff was great and gave us the run-down on the menu. I don't find their written descriptions all that helpful so this verbal explanation was appreciated. We got two ramens (~$20 each) and one soupless ramen, a couple drinks (~$14-16 alcoholic, ~$7 N/A), and a dessert. Everything was good but nothing wow-ed us. I'm not exactly sure what would need to be done to make that happen as I know they're making nearly everything from scratch and the flavors are good. Maybe just upping the ante like more spice in the spicy ramen. I'd be back when craving ramen year round (hot soup on winter and cold noodles in summer) and a lively atmosphere with a nice view. read more

The easiest way to put it is its gentrified ramen. The kitchen staff was a dead giveaway. Skip the wok fried green beans, it's a mega rip off that a 5 year old could make. Incredibly soggy with an overtly sweet sauce and a portion size made for ants. The tofu appetizer was cooked ok, but once again slathering things in sweet sauces seems to be a one-trick thing here. Ramen broth was off-putting, safe and bland; earthy, yet unclean because at the base it's probably chicken that's been emulsified with the fat still attached to it. I could be wrong and there may be a pork component in the broth, but the chicken far out powers any semblance of it, and I didn't like it. Yokohama Skyline Eatery which is 10 blocks away is leagues better and it's a hole in the wall run by an old Japanese couple, who unironically can get the food out faster than a kitchen full of dudes in their 30's. If you've been scrolling through social media, you've probably seen Toya Ramen getting a lot of attention. Located in SE Portland, it boasts a sleek aesthetic, a friendly staff, and convenient street parking. I didn't realize Toya specializes in chicken-based ramen, which isn't my favorite, but I was pleasantly surprised. The flavors were unique, and it's clear they take a lot of pride in their dishes. Was expecting a lot more from the reviews of this place but it was mediocre. The spicy miso ramen didn't taste anything like typical spicy miso ramen, I can't pick out what flavor it was. There was barely any broth in the bowl too. Their take on a tonkotsu ramen was better but nothing worth going back for. Chicken was the most tasty item but too salt. I wanted to like this place! Went around 9pm and it wasn't very busy, bar was empty. Cute place with open windows, could be convinced to try it out again read more

pleasantly surprised by my experience at toya ramen! this is def a top 5 ramen spot for me now (and also kid friendly which made my mama heart happy), with my number 1 still being ramen ryoma (no one does spicy like they do) what we ordered: * house pog soda * spicy cucumbers * pork centerloin tonkatsu * kids ramen (chicken based) * shio al tartufo ramen (with a side of chili oil + chili powder to add heat) 10000/10 recommend every thing we got. the truffle flavor alone in the shio al tartufo was AMAZING but ya girl cannot eat non-spicy ramen so i had to crank up the heat. the additional spice did not take away from the flavors. staff was kind, knowledgeable, attentive, and the aesthetics is a plus. read more

I forget what I ordered, but I have the photo- the creamy soup was super comforting and it tasted like a hearty soup I would have at home (the photo with the bamboo shoots and pork belly slice). I also had a Norman Osborn drink and tried the cucumber salad during this trip. The Norman Osborn was super strong and bitter (not my cup of tea), and the cucumber salad was refreshing! Overall this experience from June was a positive one- the ramen was super yummy but did leave my mouth feeling salty after, but it was worth it because it was the best ramen I had in awhile. Our waiter was super nice and I believe the owner(?) of the restaurant came out to chat with us too! we finished our meal with a black sesame cheesecake and left with happy and full bellies. The second time I came was on November 11th. It was a rainy day and the restaurant was packed. We were told that there would be an hour wait so we decided to pass some time in the car while waiting for seats. However, after an hour we still had received no texts and had watched a few tables leave. When we went inside, the person who had put our number in the waitlist said that they had notified us awhile ago but we unfortunately never received our text that a table was ready. The waiter was super apologetic and we were seated at the bar. To start off our meal, we ordered 3 different drinks from a super nice bartender. We got a bento yuzu drink, a midori drink, and a peach flavored drink. Out of all three I would recommend getting the peach one! Super yummy!! For our appetizer, we ordered a large garlic karaage and we were pleasantly surprised by the crispy batter and how large and juicy the chicken pieces were. This was a hit. For our main courses, my friends ordered the Tom yum ramen and OG Abura ramen, while I got the shoyu black ramen. The Tom yum ramen was sadly not a hit with my friend as the broth felt a bit watered down :(. The new school ramen was good, but a bit more on the salty side, and I had the same sentiment about the OG abura ramen. Avoid this place if you have high blood pressure. Shoyu black ramen - This was a really disappointing ramen that was not worth the price tag. The chicken paitan broth did not help balance out the severely loose handed pour of shoyu and shio cooked into this broth. The decor was nice here and the ambiance but if you've had authentic ramen in Japan this isn't even in the same category. 1st bite was good, second bite was eh, 3rd bite I couldnt finish my ramen. The broth alone was insanely salty and all 5 of us were downing glasses of water like crazy. It did not help the glasses are slim. People need to understand that ramen chefs are all about balance when making broth. They don't serve up ramen that can send you into cardiac arrest. This one needs to be adjusted in the kitchen immediately considering all 5 of us (who are all ramen versed and in our early 30's) could not finish our ramen. It was just so salty. I will say the charred pork was cooked perfectly. We also ordered the ota tofu which was good and we really liked the sauce but would recommend getting rice with it as it's super flavorful. A heads up the karage comes in the same garlic sauce as the tofu. Kind of wish they included that in the menu description because we were expecting plain karage. Overall I think this another one of those hipster joints trying really hard to be authentic Japanese. Portland does ramen well. I enjoy my goto spots, but Toya is another level! The House Orange Soda was light and refreshing, not overly sweet like a mainstream version. Tonkatsu was a hit, we preferred the darker of the two dipping sauces. The Crispy Gay Gee was the only dish that underwhelmed. "Spam" in the menu description caught my attention, but the filling tasted normal. I wonder if steamed would have been better? Mind you, I'd certainly consume a plate of it without being asked. Loved the flavor of Miso Eggplant, an ample portion too. While the O.G. Abura Soba was delicious, the star of the show was the Carbonaramen. It's worth mentioning that my favorite Italian dish is Carbonara. The chicken butter puts it over the top as does the golden egg. A superb fusion dish. The few desserts were creative, we opted for the peanut butter panna cotta. The large space filled right after the Friday 4:30 p.m. opening. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. Yes, it's higher-end, but price points seemed very fair. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed eating here. Arrived at the dinner hour rush and were seated at the bar and greeted quickly soon after. Most of these places that I have bookmarked over time have been recommended to me and I mostly go in "blind" to avoid putting any place too high on its pedestal. I will honestly say that Toya can stay on that pedestal! I also did not have any idea how many vegan alternatives there would be so a nice surprise bonus. What we had: Miso Eggplant - order 100 of these Spicy Tom-Yum-Men - I thought it was good but not nearly close to "spicy" as they advertise, add the egg, I loved the type of noodles provided in this Shio Al Tartufo - super rich and tasty Toki Highball - This is the reason why I am knocking my star down to 4. We paid $13 for our highball which is generally known to be a lesser alcohol drink similar to a cider or light beer. We should have paid $13 for 2, not 1. I felt as though the remaining of the prices were very fair (we actually stayed under $100 with tip woo!) and we were very full after our dinner but that Highball soured me a little. I would absolutely come back but I would not feed my nostalgia and go straight for a true cocktail or stick with a canned drink. read more
Came here on a Monday for an early dinner with a friend because we wanted to check this place out. The interior is super modern and clean. All staff members provided phenomenal service! I forgot our servers name but he was so kind and attentive so shout out to him for his great service. We started with the tonkatsu rib as the appetizer. It was pretty good, but nothing out of this world. The pork was super meaty and not as juicy as I thought it would be, so maybe I would go with the loin next time. The breading was a little bit crispy and was lightly seasoned. It came with two dipping sauces: a tom yum and a ketchup-bbq like sauce. I preferred the ketchup based one with the pork rib more, the tom yum one tasted really good itself but with the pork loin it reminded me of cheese cheetos? As for ramen, I got the tom yum ramen and my friend got the shoyu black. I found the shoyu black to be more to my liking since it was a richer and more fatty broth. The tom yum was very light in taste, not overly salty or sour. Both soups had one VERY thin slice of meat, which was kinda disappointing given at this price point. I opted to add an egg into my tom yum, but it was only half an egg so do keep that in mind if you choose to add! Overall an okay spot for ramen, but this would not be my first pick. I'm a sucker for truffle so you know I had to get the shio al tartufo. The broth was super clean with a light truffle flavor. The chicken breast was probably the best chicken breast I've had in my life. It's so soft, tender and buttery I forgot it was chicken breast. All other ramens were average. Believe it or not, I liked the soupless ramen the most this place. We also like the chicken karaage to much that we ordered another one. This is def not your typical chicken karaage. The sweet, savory and garlicky flavor gave it a lot more depth. The ramen was ok to me. The brother lacked flavor but I did enjoy the texture of the noodles. I would skip the cucumbers next time. Server was very attentive and nice. Street parking but we found a spot quickly on a weekday evening. read more

Wow. The flavors are subtle and aromatic, letting the quality ingredients shine. The tofu is made next door, which as a vegetarian is a delight. Everything was fresh and delicious. They have opted for quality over quantity for the win. Normally I can't finish a bowl of ramen (though I got the Mala Mazemen actually as per my server's recommendation) but I devoured this whole thing - and after apps! Our server was knowledgeable about the food and what worked well together. We also got the sesame cheesecake because the bartender at The Slammer recommended it. We are not normally dessert people but omg this was good. So great with the yuzu aperitif that our server provided us as well. Cool art. Lots to look at. Chill vibes. read more

Definitely a ramen spot to add to the list! I've been here twice now, and neither times have disappointed. Everything from the service to food is immaculate. Both times were with groups of 4-5 people and we didn't have to wait to be seated either times. I have tried the broth and broth-less ramen, both super delicious! However, I will say that I liked the dry ramen better, I like the texture of the noodles. I also tried some of the appetizers: spicy garlicky cucumbers and garlic chicken karaage. The cucumbers were good but the chicken karaage was probably my favorite thing there. It was flavorful and crispy and not too much breading (the way I prefer my fried chicken). The restaurant also has a clean feel to it with large windows which gives it so much natural lighting. I'll definitely be returning next time I crave a bowl of ramen. read more
