I live in the Bay Area, but Masu is probably one of my favorite sushi places ever. I've only had lunch here during my work trip in Nov 2025 (both times to-go) in the 3 days I was there; that's how much I enjoyed the sushi. I went a third time when I was in Portland recently and made it a point to stop by for lunch. I always get the Chef's Choice Nigiri for $29 (7 pieces with a miso soup). The quality of the fish is absolutely superb, especially for this price. I always end up ordering something else like a handroll to be fully satisfied. read more

It has been many years since my last visit and it is still a magical place. The ambiance is perfect for a relaxing and fun time. We ordered a bottle of sake which w turned out to be out of stock but the one they recommended in its place was lovely and paired well with our whole meal. Receipt says it was called Gozenshu Female Brewer's Skill Bodaimoto Omachi. We started with oysters which I highly recommend. Then had the Kamo Somen which was not what we imagined but we very much enjoyed all the flavors and the process required for each bite. Then we shared the nigiri assorted and a tuna flight. If we were rich we would have doubled that order. Each piece was treasured. We finished with the Okinawa Sweet Potato Butter Cake which was recommended for a cold day. Fantastic! Made reservations for PDX Dining Month and I highly recommend. For $55 you get an app, choice of ura maki and nigiri or sashimi, and dessert. I choose the mushroom salad and it blew me away. The umami of the fresh mushrooms shined through. The fish was very fresh and tender. The dessert was also a treat (ha!), sweet but not too sweet. Masu Sushi is a more upscale sushi experience in Southwest Portland by the Burnside area. To get here, street parking will be your best bet and there is a lot of it around the area. Once you get to the entrance, there is a short walk up the stairs before you get for the restaurant. Reservations are highly recommended so plan accordingly. Wifey and I stopped by with a reservation at 7pm to celebrate our friend's birthday. Inside, they have a dimly lit and gorgeous setup with a good amount of seating. For their menu, they have an extensive selection of different appetizers, sushi, nigiri, and hand rolls to choose from. Our group ended up getting a spread consisting of the Calamari, Yakiniku Pork, Koma Somen, Philly Roll, Nemo, Kenzo, Makanai, and the I Dream of Creamy. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. The seafood was super fresh and all of the hot foods were cooked to perfection. All of the staff here are very friendly and welcoming. Coming upstairs this place is beautifully nestled among the tree tops and makes you forget that you are downtown. The interior is also very beautiful. The service was fast, knowledgeable, and attentive. I highly recommend starting with the chawanmushi - it was super silky smooth, flavorful and the uni and crab were perfect toppers. Dreaming about when I will go back. My partner and I visited for a quick lunch on a weekday and was blown away by how amazing the food was. Our total meal cost only $54 and we left really full. We ordered the chilled tofu bento box (sooo good) as well as the japanista roll and the veggie maki. Everything in the tofu bento box was vegetarian friendly except for the miso (which I drank up and it was delicious). That chilled tofu was special and eating it with the rice and ume, the tiny roasted mushrooms and wakame salad made for such an exquisite experience. We definitely ordered too much food since they really do give you a good amount here. Or maybe it's the items we ordered? The Japanista roll was super fresh and had the right amount of fish. Weird name for a roll but can't complain about the flavor and quality! Then the veggie maki was also delicious. It was refreshing and well balanced. And my partner who is vegetarian can't wait to try more vegetarian sushi here. By the end of our meal, we were so full so we had to skip dessert. Their dessert menu looks amazing and uses a lot of traditional ingredients. None of that Americanized fried tempura ice cream and mochi ice cream stuff. It looks like this restaurant put a lot of effort in crafting their desserts, not just their savory menu. Will definitely need to be back and try even more rolls and definitely their desserts. As mentioned in my previous review, the food is just amazing. Their fish is super fresh. Everything from flavors to textures were exceptional. This time, we had to re-order some items that have been living rent free in my head since the last visit. Definitely recommend the lioness roll and the hotate nigiri (so so good). Oh, and the masu banana dessert is a must. In fact, I don't think I've eaten anything here that I don't like. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to return, but one of the owners of Masu Sushi, Jennifer, invited us back. And just wow. What a complete different experience we had this time. I do think that customer service makes or breaks the dining experience. And I can honestly say that this was by far the best dining experience I've had this year. I believe this time around we received the true Masu experience and will definitely be returning. Came here for dinner and had the chicken karaage and seasonal pickles as appetizers. For nigiri we got light tuna, medium tuna, and fatty tuna nigiri. For rolls we got the Japanista Roll and Nemo Roll. Fantastic ambiance, industrial but modern. It's located on the second floor up a flight of stairs. We almost missed the front door, and then thought it was closed because of how dark it was from the outside. Service was on point and timely. We were seated immediately, and our server came over after just a few minutes of browsing the menu to take our drink order. Everything came out to our table fairly quickly after we placed our orders. For the food, overall great quality and taste! Fish tasted fresh, and the flavors were well balanced. Karaage- light and crispy exterior, chicken perfectly juicy Nigiri - tasted fresh we got three tunas (light, medium, fatty) and it was fun to try them in sequence for the difference in taste and texture. The fatty tuna was so tender! I'm not the biggest fan of rolls, I prefer nigiri, but the two we had (Japanista and Nemo) were tasty and well proportioned. We stopped by Masu for dinner without reservations and were seated at the bar, which actually gave us a great view of the action. We ordered the chef's choice, seaweed salad, and the sweet potato dessert; everything was beautifully plated and the sushi tasted incredibly fresh. I went with the lychee cocktail (my usual safe choice), though I had my eye on the strawberry cocktail, which unfortunately they were out of. Hopefully next time! Stopped here one night (10/28/25) after my conference. I was told by a local to go to Bamboo Sushi, but glad I found this little gem upstairs right before the rain started coming down. It was a slow night and was going to sit at the bar, but decided to head to the back table with a view of the street below. Yang was my waiter and he was great in his suggestions and service. I started off with some hot sake that hit the spot while I waited for my food. I ordered Chu Toro - medium fatty tuna and Sake Toro - King Salmon Belly to start. Then got the Rip City - spicy tuna, shishito tempura, green onion, habanero masago, and avocado before finishing my meal with Ami Aji - Japanese Horse Mackrel. All of these dishes were made with the freshest ingredients and melted in my mouth. It was my favorite meal of the week and I would recommend trying this place out. read more

Some things like the gyoza were pretty unique. I think there's better sushi in Portland though. The drink menu also was a little surprising. They only had one hot sale on a giant list of options. And one of the specials, the Paloma, felt a bit out of place for this time of year (had a very autumn flavor profile in the spring) The service was a little slow, which was surprising because it didn't seem super busy. I've been coming to Masu for over 16 years. When I lived in Seattle, I used to drive down to Portland just eat here. After moving to Nashville in 2016, life took me away, but this place never left my soul. The last time I was here was five years ago, the best sushi I'd ever had. I'm back in Portland for work, and somehow, it's even better than I remembered. I learned that Chef Tommy Shin took over as owner about a year ago, and you can feel it in every detail. Trained under Nobu Matsuhisa and Masa Takayama, he brings precision and intention to each piece, and that house pickled ginger that's still magic after all these years. This isn't luxury in the conventional sense. There's no pretension, no performance. It's something quieter and more true: the luxury of someone pouring themselves completely into their craft, and the way that care becomes woven into our own story over time. Hidden gem! Okay, maybe not hidden but as Portland natives for some reason this was our first visit! We were sad to learn that in order to have the omakase you need to book the bar seating, but everything turned out okay with us ordering from the menu anyways! We started with oysters on the half shell, which was a daily special and had a strawberry something mignonette, and I wasn't disappointed per se but you couldn't taste the oysters at all because there was so much vinegar and the mignonette was so powerful; it was a great flavor but very strong and I enjoy being able to taste the oyster flavor as well. Next we got the house-smoked salmon shokupan (see pic 1) and it was very unique and yummy! We both agreed that the yuzu gel overpowered the flavor of the salmon though, even though it was a great taste I'd like a little bit more salmon to offset the yuzu and crème fraiche or less yuzu gel. We also had the chef's choice nigiri which was all excellent, with unique accent flavors and all of the fish tasted very fresh. We also enjoyed the holladay roll, which came with a peanut dipping sauce and had a bit of a tangy Thai-like essence. It was not spicy despite the Serrano description, but probably wouldn't order again. Then we got the st Helen's volcano which was easily my favorite and 10/10 recommend! It had amazing presentation with a tiny flaming volcano but best of all was the fresh, juicy crab and the flavors melded just perfectly! We polished off the meal with a little ikura and creamy scallop sashimi, both extremely fresh and excellent! All items tasted so fresh and yummy! Service was very fast and friendly, 10/10! The setting was super cool, upscale warehousey vibes that felt very trendy, this would be the perfect place for a girls' night out or a special date. Parking can be tough in this area, especially if it's a game night. And you probably need a reservation, at least for weekends. Definitely will be back! read more

My absolute favorite was the creamy dreamy roll with their habanero roe was so yummy it's definitely got a kick to it. The service was amazing as well. A couple of my friends and I stopped by here recently as they were randomly craving some sushi to snack on. It was a short walk from the Flock, where we were hanging out. The interior of the place is nice and spacious, and has that nice modern vibe to it. You can see the chef prepping the sushi from one end and also the bartender making drinks in the center. We ordered some stuff off both the happy hour menu and regular menu. I really did enjoy their kaarage, as it was cooked perfectly (had to order another) and their yakinku pork. The pork was super tender and full of flavor. My friends ordered a few sushi items and did enjoy it. They were impress with the uni. Wow, I just left this restaurant, and it was a shocking experience. When I first walked in, the restaurant itself was beautiful and I love how you can see the trees through the windows, but no one greeted me, so I just sat at the sushi counter myself. A male host greeted me after and brought me the menus. I had made a dinner reservation here for my boyfriend's birthday that is coming up, so after reading all the positive reviews regarding the high quality sushi here, I wanted to stop by and try it for myself before bringing him. So, a lady server came by and I placed an order for a few sashimis, their mushroom salad, and two of their specialty sashimi dishes. The first plate I received was the Hamachi Pepper sashimi and the hamachi slices had those stringy tissue bits in them, so it wasn't pleasant to eat, but overall it was fine, so I kept eating it, and when I had one piece left, the server asked me how it was and I told her about the stringy parts and she said she could take the plate away and she did. The next dish was the Bincho sashimi and I was really hopeful because the albacore looked so soft and fresh, but omg it was soooo lemon-y, it was hard to eat--like my lips stung and my teeth hurt from all the acidity. It was like they poured lemon juice on the sashimi. I didn't want to send it back so I really tried to just enjoy it, but I really couldn't. The mushroom salad came out at the same time, and that was also served cold, and super lemon-y. I eat a lot of sushi, and I recently also just returned from Japan. If the fish is fresh and high quality, you don't need much paired with it, especially not that much sauce. A little goes a long way, especially for citrusy sauces. I gave the server my feedback and I even said "I feel really bad. It's my first time here, and I don't want to send things back to the kitchen, but these fishes are too acidic..." and I just explained my experience, and she angrily took my plates and said "I'll just take these away"--my barely eaten mushrooms salad and the Bincho sashimi that I had two bites of. I even told her that I wish she could try it to see for herself if those dishes are usually that sour and lemon-y or if it's just today. Once my nigiri and plain sashimi came out, I felt much better. The Chutoro and scallop were fresh and buttery soft. I really enjoyed the fish by themselves. The creamy scallop nigiri was way too mayo heavy though. Once the bill came, I noticed that nothing was taken off the menu. I very politely asked about that since she took 3 of my plates away without me even asking her to, and she said that because I had eaten most of it (which was only the first dish, which I would've paid for), she left everting on. I said "had I know they were all going to stay on the bill, I would've at least tried to eat it or something (probably try to mix it with a side of rice to balance out some of that acid).." and she just rudely cut me off and said "I'm not gonna argue" and took the 3 items off and practically threw the revised check on my counter and walked off. I immediately cancelled my reservation for next week, for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, paid in cash and left. If you want fresh sashimi, go and get their a la carte sashimi and nigiri. I haven't tried any of their rolls or miso cod but those looked good. I wouldn't recommend the mushroom salad, Bincho or Hamachi Pepper. I, for one, don't ever plan on going back or taking anyone there after my experience today. read more
