Terrain is stunning! It really makes you feel as if you're dining in a gorgeous terrarium - tons of plants lining the walls and gorgeous air plants + stones on the tables. I didn't realize that Terrain is part of Anthropologie until I walked in - keep walking past the plant section in their store to access the cafe (where Barnes used to be!). It's fairly new, so be prepared to deal with issues in their service as they work out the kinks. We had a long wait before our table was ready (took 30 minutes beyond the reservation time), but we had a gracious host who made sure we were taken care of while we waited. I tried their version of the moscow mule, with elderflower syrup and tumeric. Starting off, you get warm bread in a pot + whipped honey butter!! My favorite dish of the night had to be the Lioni Burrata toast that a gf had gotten - the burrata is so creamy and balanced well with the smokey/sweet black garlic. My Harvest Bowl was delicious as well albeit a bit TOO well seasoned with salt (PS - always say yes to bacon). Am I coming back? I'm so glad they opened back up! Located within the Anthropology store in downtown Bethesda, this cafe offers a small menu of fresh and great tasting food. The indoor space is small and whimsical but I like sitting outside if the weather is nice under the shaded trees. I stopped by for lunch and the service was great. The "potted" bread is just ok - cute but lacking some flavor. The mushroom frittata with potatoes and greens was delicious. It takes quite a while for the food to come out. The iced tea of the day was vanilla hazelnut which was earthy. The price point is on the high end but the quality of food and presentation is great. I worry a little how long the food would take it if were busy but I look forward to returning. read more

A worthy addition to ritzy downtown Bethesda, Pennsylvania transplant Terrain Cafe delivers on the aesthetically pleasing atmosphere, healthy and delicious (if pricey) fare, and fairly good service. A friend and I met up for a late brunch on a humid Sunday - even at 1pm, the place was packed and we were glad to have made a reservation. I was pleased when our waitress promptly stopped by our table and took our orders - at other Terrain locations, service often is overwhelmed and slow. Complimentary bread, baked in a flowerpot and served with hibiscus butter, arrived shortly afterwards and was as good as ever. I ordered the burger and was very, very happy to find that it was a true medium-rare. So many places I've been to in DC tend to err on the side of over-cooked burger, but Terrain's burger is fresh, well-seasoned, and shaped as a thick patty - one of the best burgers I've had in the area. The accompanying fries were great as well. Since the burger had gone so well, I decided to spring for dessert. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a letdown: the salted honey tart could have been good, but was served straight out of the refrigerator. If the tart had been warmed (even microwaved would have been an improvement) and served with perhaps a dollop of whipped cream or a small scoop of ice cream, it would have been much, much more enjoyable. All in all, Terrain is a great option for meeting friends over well-prepared, fancy but casual brunch fare in an Instagram dream environment. Oh my my my I have only great things to say about this place! Not only is it super cute (refer to the flower pot bread loaf pic!) but also delicious. Both of the salads we ordered plus the salmon were all super fresh. The charcuterie was a charcuterie board of my dreams with all the perfect fixins. Plus the espresso martinis were top tier. Where do you spend a beautiful but disgustingly humid day in the DMV? The answer for us was Terrain Cafe. An awesome cafe that lets you feel like you're outside but all the benefits (#AC #nobugs) of being indoors. We made a reservation for a Sunday afternoon and I recommend doing the same. The resturant isn't huge and was basically full when we arrived. Once seated I enjoyed how simple the decor was but also how calm the busy restaurant made me feel. Our meal started with fresh bread inside a small clay pot. The bread was a great way to start the meal and definitely follows the theme. Upon arriving I had checked out the menu online- which appears to be missing sections. The menu at the resturant is larger but it's not very big. I ended up getting the omlet without fish for $16. The omlet was great but the capers didn't belong and left it tasting very salty. I would order it again but leave them out. The dish came with a small salad (could have used lore dressing) and potato hash (super good). My friend ordered the burger that came with a large portion of fries. The burger appeared to be cooked to perfection and was really good. This was a neat place and I didn't know it existed until today. I've always assumed it was a part of Anthropology and when I walked in the store I never found the cafe entrance. Now I now the door to the cafe is to the right of Anthropology's door. A solid four stars for Terrain Cafe! Been in Bethesda for a while and was really excited to see such a cute cafe replace an outdated Barnes & Noble. Decided to pop in for a quick snack after a day of shopping and I was definitely pleased. We sat at the bar, which is first come first serve and I'm glad because it was poppin on a Saturday around 2 pm. Service was a little slow but it was busy and we weren't in a terribly huge rush so I don't hold it against them! They had some really interesting drinks and beers on tap. I went with a Ramona wine cooler, which is my FAVE and I couldn't believe they had it. We went with the mushroom soup, burratta and black garlic crostini and the cheese burger. The mushroom soup was absolutely exceptional! I'm a big mushroom fan and it was excellent, it was more like a bisque than a real soup, not at all brothy. The burratta and black garlic was a big surprise! The black garlic was actually really diverse in taste and had a sweet layer that was so nice, the creamy burratta on top was a perfect pairing. The cheeseburger was super juicy and the cheese with the caramelized onions complimented each other perfectly. Also, was super impressed with the fries! It's more of 3.5 stars based on our brunch experience. Also keep in mind that it was just open this past Thursday, and it'll probably get better after some time. Place: pretty and cute. But the layout is cramped. The restroom is accessible, but the dining area doesn't seem that easy to get around for those with special need and even strollers. Food: it wasn't great nor bad, nothing really stood out. Butternut squash fritter was interesting, not what we expected. We still enjoyed it. For entree, I got the burger based on another yelp review. The patty portion is large, and I love how it's still pink in the middle like a real medium should be. For those who are used to a "less-pink kinda medium," make sure to adjust your preference when ordering. The shakshuka hubby ordered was alright. The tomato was bland and egg was overcooked. A friend's breakfast board came out with this gigantic presentation and he seemed to enjoy it. Another friend got the harvest bowl, but she thought it was a bit too salty for her. Staff: they are nice for the most part though not particularly warm. Awkward comments mentioned on a previous Yelp review didn't occur to us. But I won't be too harsh on them since the restaurant is very new. Cleanliness: Our table was right against a wall where it could be harder to clean, but there was a piece of half eaten bread and some crumbs under my seat right when we got there. And tiny crumb on the bread plate and between tables as well. Slightly turn off by this since I kind of expected a cleaner place since it's new... I do have to mention a high light, also the reason why I gave a 3.5 star instead of 3. This place has lavender syrup!!! It had been difficult for me to find lavender syrup in dc for years, and this is one of the handful places that offer it!!! I understand Terrain just opened, but service was a bit spotty. I look forward to coming back and trying Terrain again once some of the kinks are worked out. When I arrived, my friends had ordered drinks at the bar, a glass of wine and one of Terrain's spritzers. When we finally were seated at our table, the drinks still weren't ready at the bar. The drinks took quite a while while one member of our party stayed up there and waited for them. Then he was given the incorrect amount of charge. It wasn't until later in the meal when we went back up to the bar to get the promised change was it finally returned (less $1 still!). When we asked our waiter for recommendations about the menu he said everything was good except for one salad that was nasty because the lettuce was bitter. Normally waiters don't describe the food as nasty and tell you about that when you ask for a recommendation! He kept trying to find the salad on the menu to tell us which one it was, but he couldn't quickly find it. I questioned whether they had removed it from the menu and the waiter quickly stated they did. I honestly don't know if they did or not, but knowing we weren't planning to order salad and he didn't have any other recommendations (or other items to point out that were horrible and we should avoid!), we moved onto ordering. I got the hibiscus cider to drink (non-alcoholic, cold) that was delicious, a perfect fall drink. We all ordered the terrain burger. The burger was good, a little pinker than I would have liked (I ordered it medium), next time I probably would order it medium well. It came with a balsamic onion jam on it and fries. The burger was very juicy and flavorful and the fries were tasty. One of my favorite things was the complimentary bread served in a flower pot. The bread was so nice and fluffy and I loved how it was served in the flower pot. The herbed butter it was served with was delicious! For dessert, we got the Autumn Chocolate Terrarium. The presentation is cute, it actually comes in a bowl that looks like a terrarium complete with an edible rock! I really liked the dessert and the combination of flavors and the nice crunch from the dark chocolate matcha crunch against the smooth silkiness of the mousse. I was a little surprised at the size for the price. I was expecting something much bigger for $13. I think it would be better if the terrarium was more in the $9 price range like the rest of the desserts. Service wasn't incredibly attentive and the table right next to us had multiple issues with their bill. They were charged a different amount than what was printed on the menu and had some other problems that we overheard because the tables aren't spaced too far apart. Overall, I liked the food and the decor and if the waiter wasn't so frazzled and there weren't those service issues, it would definitely be 4 stars, so I would definitely go back and give it another try and at the very least, eat some more flower pot bread! read more

Not only is this location extremely aesthetic and located next to an Anthropologie (big win), the food is incredible! This is not a place that's only photogenic- everything is fantastic: the atmosphere, the drinks, the food, the presentation. They do seasonal menus to keep weather appropriate dishes and vegetables, and as I went during the autumn there was lots of root vegetables. They do mostly plant based dishes, but there are also some meat dishes. I got the Garden Spritzer, essentially a flavored club soda (I chose blueberry and elderflower for my flavors), Hummus and Crudite Board (my least favorite thing I ordered I would recommend a different appetizer), Mushroom and Oat Burger (delicious!), and Chocolaye Terrarium (the perfect not too sweet dessert). read more

My girlfriend and I love coming to this cafe! It is such a neat addition to the already really nice Anthropologie store in Bethesda. We've been there a few times now and each time the bartenders are very friendly and personable. It is nice to go to a bar where you can have an open conversation with the bartender and they can then recommend drinks and foods based on what they've discovered about you. We really like their seasonal cocktails. The ones they have on the menu at the moment are very refreshing and are always prepared to look very nice and appealing. We never have to wait particularly long and always get good attention when we're here. If you're still in the brunch mood, their dinner menu includes some of their toasts and cheese plates to fill your cravings. If you're looking for dinner, the menu offers fish, chicken, and other meat dishes, packed with flavor. Before your dinner comes, they bring a bread appetizer in a flowerpot, which lends to the super cute environment I previously mentioned. I love this unique take on your traditional bread basket! For dinner, I went with the famous "harvest bowl" that you've probably seen the most photos of here on Yelp. Lots of veggies, quinoa, and your choice of protein, drizzled with tzatziki dressing. I've been a huge fan of the Terrain in CT for a long time and was over the moon when I saw they'd come to the DC area! The one in CT has the garden store and cafe attached which I kind of prefer. This one has the garden store inside the Anthropologie. Who doesn't want to have some amazing food and leave with a cute little house plant or terrarium? :) We got the black garlic and burrata toast, mushroom soup, and the fennel and squash salad with chicken. Comically bad dining experience. I came here for brunch on Saturday 3/11. Friends and I were starving after a night out, and the coffee and cocktails made us more nauseous. There were about 10 servers working (standing around) and only 3 tables full. It was confusing as to why it took 30 minutes for 2 coffees and 2 cocktails to be brought to our table. Our server was sweet, but she would drop food/drinks off and then immediately run away from our table before we could request for more water/bread/ask a question. Fries were cold, food was nauseating and all came out at different times, espresso was watery and burnt, and the bloody mary didn't even taste like booze. There was no music or heat, so the dining experience was very much like eating cold leftovers in the back of an Anthropologie. As a server myself, I know Saturday brunch is the worst, but for the price, Terrain really needs to get it together. read more

I'm a huge fan of Anthropologie so I was quite excited to try the cafe related to their Terrain Store. The cafe itself is beautiful, rustic but still retains modern lines. Since it just opened there was quite a line both days I tried to grab a table. If you are interested in going I would recommend making a reservation. I ended up sitting at the bar which was fine but I would love to go back and soak up the atmosphere in the dinning area. I ordered a latte and the Brioche French Toast which is served with hazelnuts, brown butter and Nutella. I was also offered fresh bread served in a terra-cotta pot and salted butter. The bread was warm and fresh and the salted butter was a nice compliment. My French toast was good but I would probably try something else next time I go back. People near me ordered the Pear and Ricotta Fritters and they looked amazing as did the Shakshuka. read more

Had a very Basic Bethesda Sunday: Solid Core followed by brunch at Terrain. I love that Terrain sticks to a strict horticultural theme. The bread comes baked in a flowering pot and served with freshly whipped honey butter from the cow out back. The menu also stays on subject with a selection of vegetarian dishes "from the garden" like the "harvest bowl" or "Greek yogurt with bee pollen." Anyways, good expensive vibes, but I'd advise everyone to steer clear of the shakshouka, as it is basically tomato soup served with two eggs on top. Put a bird on it! Put an egg on it! read more

Whenever we had questions, he would answer politely and when he was not sit with the answer, he asked manger for answer. We ordered mushroom soup and fried chickpeas. The soup tasted good and the chickpeas were crispy. We had stake and burger. The stake was juicy, and well seasoned. The burger tasted excellent. The fries were yummy. We ordered ice cream for dessert. It came with 3 scoops. We chose chocolate, vanilla and pistachio. They were really good and you could tell it was not from store. Keep in mind this isn't a overly large restaurant so if you do plan on having a party of more than 4 I would recommend calling ahead to make a reservation. Additionally, everyone of the 9 (including me) loved the food. You can tell they use quality ingredients. The staff is super attentive as well. The outside of this restaurant is so cute and it always catches my eye. It is located right next to the huge Anthropologie and its decoration fits right in with the store and the plants next door as well. We both ordered the burger and fries. It was delicious, and the setting is very cute and romantic. I would love to come back and try their other dishes.
