I will start by saying this is not a good place to get a cheap glass of wine - they have an extensive menu and it's helpful to have a tiny bit of knowledge at least of wine before coming! The prices are also on the higher end, considering happy hour pours were between $12-30. Food actually stood out so I'd definitely try that here! We got the Brussel sprouts and the pigs in a blanket and both were really good. We also got Riesling and vinho verde, both were delicious, along with their cocktails. Came here around 6pm on a Sunday! Surprisingly not too crowded given how amazing I thought this spot was! Started off with a frose that was amazing - very well blended. No random chunks of ice. I am just now realizing Terroir Tribeca is the new location of the Terroir in the East Village, which has apparently been closed since 2015. I loved that bar--I went on a first date there with a very sweet boy in 2009, the one summer I was young and single and living in New York. Now I'm a married woman in my thirties living in L.A. (really an improvement on all counts, though I had fun then, too), and I came to this Terroir for a happy hour date with my friend Sarah W. I was a few drinks in when we met up, around 4:30 on a Thursday. Sarah was nice enough not to care, and to treat me to more alcohol. I guess this is a favorite bar of hers, and it's easy to see why. Terroir is utterly charming, lively but relaxing, with a cozy, welcoming vibe. We got a high table to ourselves and a server took our orders, even though we were just there to drink. She was friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about wine. There was a whole binder with countless wines by the glass, and she helped me land on a couple of Rieslings (they were doing a summer of Rieslings thing, so I guess those were being highlighted). I don't remember what they were, but I enjoyed both greatly. I had a lovely time at Terroir, sipping wine and catching up with my friend. As far as wine bars/cocktail lounges in Tribeca go, Terroir is one of my favorites. It's trendy without giving off that pretentious vibe. The most notable thing about Terroir is the people who work there. They are wine experts and really understand the entirety of the menu. They know what cheese/dish will pair best with which wine and can thoroughly explain any question that we threw at them. It's parallel to the knowledge of those who work at a winery and extremely impressive. The selection of wine and cheese are what I would recommend coming here for. Selecting your cheese plate is one of the coolest things you can do. The other food good but Terroir is a place where you get the chance to expand your wine and cheese palette. I've been to Terroir a couple of times, and find it to be more of a targeted marketing success than a real wine success. The clientele looks to be mostly young, and probably experienced. The atmosphere is shabby chic, with emphasis on shabby. The bathroom is smack dab in the middle of the action, only a couple of feet from seated patrons, and right next to the busing station. Be prepared to spend a lot of money and a lot of time going through the binder menu with its stream-of-conciousness commentary that doesn't always hit the witty mark.. For the most part, what they push are skimpy by-the-glass pours of mostly cheap and often strange wines at elevated prices. While that may be fine for 20-somethings with credit cards, it falls way short for the more seasoned clientele. The by-the-glass menu is underwhelming and often vague with undisclosed countries of origin. How is anyone supposed to know if an obscure label is from Uruguay or Georgia or somewhere in the southern hemisphere? Country of origin reveals a lot about a wine. Label alone provides no context. Unique wines and labels are not necessarily a bad thing, but some of the offerings are barely palatable or downright weird. Four full pages of Rieslings, Blue Nun (yes, Blue Nun), an entire page dedicated to a sparkling blueberry wine, almost no Italians or Californians, and very few French reds, is very hard to understand. It gets back to marketing and profit margin on obscure, low cost, sometimes inferior stuff that can be talked up and marked up exponentially. The food menu is ok with enough variety but, again, it's way overpriced, especially for the quality and quantity. The $6 popcorn is literally about 1 cup of nothing-special popcorn. I had high hopes for the $108 cheese and charcuterie board, but it too was pretty underwhelming both times. The so called "funky" cheeses were anything but. To be fair, service tends to be good with well trained, knowledgeable servers. Everything is poured at the table, and they provide small tastes if you ask. Their by-the-glass fortified wines and aperitifs, which are generally not prominently featured at most wine bars, are their strong suit. The selection is decent, and flights are interesting and reasonably priced. They come with an information sheet explaining each pour, which is a good way to learn and try a variety of things you might not otherwise consider. I haven't tried any full bottles, and am not sure that's the kind of place I'd risk dropping that kind of $$ on. I'd have to investigate their cellar situation first. Without proper storage, I wouldn't risk it. read more

I ended up going to Terroir last friday on happy hr with office colleagues and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my colleagues is friends with the owner Paul Grieco, and apparently Mr. Grieco is crrrazyy about Rieslings. That reflects in the menu that not only has a long selection of Rieslings alone, but has like 10 pages devoted to educating the customer about varieties and nuances of Riesling. The first line of those 10 pages is "Not all Rieslings are sweet" and I didn't even know that. Really says something about the knowledge an average wine drinker has about Riesling (or it's just me :-/ ) We shared a bottle each of Riesling and Red among the 6 of us. Surprisingly the Red turned out better! It was a South African unfiltered Pinot Noir (Cradock Peak), and had a beautiful balance of savory and fruity notes. We also shared a cheese and meat board: the blue cheese and the Finochietta were highlights for me. Among other finger foods, the crispy chickpeas were everybody's favorite. Crispy outside, soft and light inside, and aromatic from the crispy basil it was fried with: this went perfectly with our Red. Which means we HAD to order a second bowl of them! Seriously, I can eat a whole bowl of it for dinner and wash it down with a couple of glasses of that Cradock Peak. Some of the food items we got were nothing to write home about, and things are a little bit pricey. But overall, a great selection of wines for people of all preferences, great ambiance (72 cutest animals was playing on the large screen) and great finger foods to go with the drinks. Inside it's quaint and gives you the feeling of being in a wine cellar. The low ceilings and brick walls play up the ambiance. The cheese board came with nutty multigrain bread, honey, and jam. After mentioning my nut allergy, the waitress brought over pieces of plain baguette for me. While the popcorn was good, it was a bit pricey for the simple kettle corn tossed in spices that it was. Every wine bar is fake compared to this. Yes, it's pricey outside of happy hour, but you're paying both for the quality of the bottles and the knowledge of the staff. I can't say that you'll never have a bad wine here, but it's hard to have a bad time. I came a couple months ago to catch the tail end of the Summer of Riesling, being a fan of the grape. I convinced my boyfriend into the flight of Rieslings, while I opted for a glass of a sweeter one recommended by our server. The pour is quite generous for the full glass, making the $15 feel pretty worth it (what you would pay in Tribeca anyway). The flight did not disappoint. Each bottle was presented with a story, and the glasses ranged from ultra-sweet to dry to funky. This is a great place to explore. The wine binders are massive, filled with strange commentary, and offer a wider by-the-glass selection than anywhere in New York I can think of. Put yourself in the hands of your server and try something new. Enjoyed savoring our glasses in a near-empty bar on a Friday night (need we be worried?) watching an old Elvis Presley movie. A really cozy spot despite all of the punk-rock posturing. Sad about the demise of the East Village Terroir; I would probably spend most of my evenings here. The 'Game of Thrones' theme was really cool and I enjoyed the upper middle grade wine with the upper wine grade price tag. The food was fantastic but the wine and servers slow in coming. (Were our Diller's not green enough?) just sayin'. So I liked this place, really, I did but they don't handle crowds well and the film festival was just that.
