I usually walk near Teruya's and sometimes pick up a bento for Lunch although the Bento selection is small there usually is something I can get so it all good! I usually pick up one or two andagi to go with my Bento for a snack later. From what I understand Teruya's used to be in the old Shirokiya and had Bentos there so it's pretty good bentos. The Andagi is some of the best I've had here so I am always happy to get some. I love the small Mom and Pop feel of the shop and although there isn't any parking except on the street it's not a problem as I am always walking past. read more

I'm so happy that I decided to try the food at Teruya's Andagi. I bought the garlic chicken roll bento box with karaage chicken, croquettes, eggplant, green beans, and a hotdog. I picked up the bento in the early morning but didn't eat it until dinner. Everything was delicious and tasty. The chicken was soft and full of flavor, the rice was good and the eggplant was soft and juicy. This bento has such a good variety of food items. For dessert, I ate the Mochi and the Andagi. Both mochi and andagi were good. Because I went to Teruyas in the early morning, there were lots of parking spaces available on Pensacola. Just be sure to feed the meter. There isn't a seating area. Teruya makes the best bento boxes! This is my work's 'go-to' place for bento take out for our weekly meeting luncheons. What sets Teruya bento boxes apart from the rest is their delicious vegetable sides...they are the best! The bentos come with so many to choose from unlike other bento places I have tried in the area. The vegetable sides (I don't know the exact names of) are described to be pickled radish/green bean medley, steamed squash, lotus root, shoyu eggplant, and potato panko patties. They surround the main bento compartment containing a very yummy shrimp tempura roll and/or karaage chicken. Drizzle all with the katsu(?) sauce packet and enjoy! Another good COVID takeout experience! I called and made my order for pick up a little later. Picking up was good for me because I had just gotten the last metered stall on Pensacola ($0.25 for 10 minutes), otherwise I would have had to go around and around. They are doing transactions in their tiny entryway - you cannot enter but the food is staged behind and on the side of them for selection. My pick up was easy and getting the extra sweet potato mochi for checking in was a bonus. Paid with my credit card, got my food, and went on my merry way! I got a garlic chicken roll and a shrimp roll bento that had nishime, tofu patty, goya champuruu (bittermelon), and mochiko chicken as sides. I liked everything but the bittermelon, but that's normal for me...if you normally like bittermelon, you'd probably enjoy this side dish. I wish they could do options for the bento sides (I'm not sure if they normally do but because of COVID they don't) but I wasted the bittermelon and felt guilty about it. Of the shrimp and chicken rolls, my preference is the shrimp since I'm pretty particular about chicken and the extra fat/cartilage that it usually has but the taste of both was really good and very filling. Couldn't finish both...I was full after initially eating the mochi and andagi - I know, but it was warm when I got it and that's the best time to enjoy it! The sweet potato mochi was one of the best things I've put in my mouth since the COVID shutdown, I wished I had bought more! The andagi was delicious too! Yes, yes, and yes! The bentos are fresh, fresh, fresh! Anything fried in it (croquettes, garlic chicken) is actually crispy! I can't stand when all the fried components in bentos are soggy or hardened, and this just wasn't an issue. The cute little sides are just as delicious as the main. Nothing was left but the plastic containers to throw away. I grabbed some sweet potato mochi and andagi to go for the family (I'm so nice). I ate a few on the drive home. But who can resist? I don't know why some people are writing to complain about these being oily. They're fried. And scrumptious. The warmth and greasiness only attest to the quality and freshness. You have okinawan doughnuts aka: andagi, you have okinawan sweet potato mochi puffs, you have super duper scoobie snack in shrimp tempura musubi and chicken katsu. Not a huge selection yet what you have is tasty and priced well! What I am always craving for tho is delicious vegetables and you have that in a beautiful nine choice vegetarian bento consisting of kinpura gobo, kabotcha, goya chanpuru, tofu patty, green beans, nasu, renkon, mochi red rice and an okinawan donut. Not a huge portion rather just enough. The tastes are in nice contrast which I enjoyed immensely. This bento packs well for the airplane and satisfies while not weighing me down...just right while traveling. My friend Oli told me about this place awhile ago and said to check it out. I bookmarked it and told him I would. Soon after, I saw several people check in there. Reviews were good so I told Mink that we should do lunch there next time we're in the area. Luckily one day we had a ton of errands in the area so we decided to check them out. Make sure to check in on Yelp for a free piece of mochi with purchase of $5.00 or more. We came around lunch time on a weekday and there was a ton of street parking right in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is very cozy and can only seat three people along the window facing Pensacola. We dined in and it didn't feel cramped even though they have limited seating. There is a rack with a good selection of premade bento sets between the drink fridge and cashier. You have the option to pay cash or credit at the register. We picked up two bento sets. One with the Shrimp Tempura Roll and the other with the Garlic Chicken Roll. Both came with pumpkin, eggplant/veggies, karaage and croquette. We also ordered a bowl of the Sukiyaki Donburi. Everything was delicious! Our favorite was the Sukiyaki. It was a good balance of meat, onions, sauce and rice. Parking can be an issue for only metered street parking is available unless you park down the street on Young or on King or Beretania... otherwise worth the trouble to park... if you live near by then by foot wouldn't be too bad to walk to... Once you've reach the shop, the place only has about 4 stool seats by the window, a small frig with drinks, and a shelf system with their bentos on each shelf... at the counter is a clear plastic window that keeps you from drooling or picking up any andagi for yourself... the remaining space is the kitchen where the magic is made! I am a totally geek for baker and fried goods and this place fits the bill perfectly! The goods... 1) Spam Roll... their version of a spam musubi... larger than usual but nothing special from any other spam musubi... still a comfort delight... 2) Shrimp Tempura Roll... Oh yes... me love shrimp tempura roll... nearly the entire shrimp is rolled up in rice and nori... soo Ono.... 3) Garlic Chicken Roll... Hoooooo.... an awesome way to eat a piece of chicken... I not talkin' bout a cut of a piece... We have to go five stars for this local favorite. I usually get tofu burgers for airplane food when I leave Oahu, and stopped in at their new location. It seems much smaller with less options to choose from, but maybe it's just the change in venue that makes it look so. They had my tofu burgers so I happily grabbed a few packs and was on my way. This is the first time at Teruya's. I'm trying to cut down on my meat consumption so the vegetable bento was an obvious draw. I heard they are known for their andagi. I think I stayed away from this little strip because the parking seems so inconvenient but today the heavens looked upon me favorably and we had the first parking stall open!! It's a cute lil shop which looks like a family business. They keep stocking their grab and go bento rack with freshly made bentos. Today we got: 1. Vegetable Bento. Your palate will definitely not get bored. It offers a different array of vegetable side dishes surrounding a scoop of rice with an andagi for dessert! 2. Shrimp tempura roll bento. Shrimp tempura roll was bomb. I think a few pieces of mochiko chicken, green beans and a croquette with tonkatsu sauce. 3. Chicken Bento. Working in town certainly has its perks and one being Teruya's Andagi. It's a 10-15 min walk from my workplace on Ward (depending on how hungry I am) and a nice get away from the office. It's certainly well worth the exercise though. They've got several varieties of bentos, my favorite being the vegetable bento. There's side orders of tofu patty, hijiki, tempura, and musubi as well. The prices just can't be beat and by far the best for the price. I've made the journey several times since being introduced to Teruya's and I never fail to get some poi mochi and andagi. Whether you work in and around the area or on the prowl for a good bento, stop in and pick one up. You won't be disappointed. P.S. It was sad to see them leave Ala Moana but aside from a location change the food is still amazing!!! Absolutely love that everything is made fresh! During the lunch rush they run out of bentos fast! But they're just as quick to put out hot and fresh bentos. Wait time is not long. Even if it was, it's worth the wait. My personal favorite is their vegetable bento!!! It's like a little sampler. It doesn't look like a lot but it gets you full for sure. It's roughly around $8 which is very affordable for the selection you get! You also can't pass up getting andagi to enjoy after your meal. Andagi: Fresh warm andagi from Teruya's. Like many things, andagi are only good when they are fresh and warm. Bentos: My favorite Teruya bento was the vegetarian nine item bento. They made lots of other types bentos too (look at the pictures) but this one was the best value, most unique, and one of my favorites at the entire Shirokiya. Location Parking: On Pensacola Street on the edge of the Makiki area. Near the Kaiser Clinic building and Auntie Pasto's. Start looking for parking as soon as you are at the Beretania/Pensacola intersection. Turn right on Young Street if there is no street parking on Pensacola. Either park on the street, in the Longs Parking lot, or turn around and park near the First Hawaiian Bank. No one seems to be watching those lots to prevent the quick run over to Teruya's and back.
