ok, so we sold our house with the solar installation from Tesla. 1. They make money on the lease, both power from the user and the extra energy. 2. their customer service is horrible. 60 days after our account was closed they charged a mystery charge. I have no idea there was no communication. I had my final bill in July (paid in full on 7/5) 60 days later on 9/5 they billed me the mystery charge. It is sad honestly. Excellent product. The sales and customer support people are very knowledgeable and helpful. The home inspectors were very good, and respectful of my time. True, if you call you don't receive an immediate response, but I'm ok with that. It's very easy to schedule a telephone call or video conference. Our system was installed in spring this year, it's winter now and it's still not on. Per contract Tesla is expected to submit application for approval within 90 days. It's our 4th month waiting for them to submit application and still nothing. Our project manager has stopped answering emails. There is no other direct contact except customer service and on that number every time there is a new person and has a new excuse. I understand it's pandemic time and things are slow but the day our system was installed I got a bill to pay in full amount within 24-48 hours and there was no delay or lack of manpower when it came to asking for money. Our experience with Tesla is horrible and the nightmare continues. I would strong urge everyone to look elsewhere. Tesla is not what it pretends to be, my brother got a model 3 and that was a ordeal on its own. There are better and more responsive companies out there than Tesla. I had been considering rooftop solar for a long time but neither my wife or I wanted to cover our roof with panels. As it turns out, we needed a new roof due to leaks. USAA insurance refused to cover the roof, but that's another review. So we pulled the trigger on a Tesla Solar Roof plus 3 Powerwall batteries. This is 3 home improvements in 1, nicer/new roof, solar generation, and backup power. If you think about it that way, it is a bargain. The installation team was awesome. Those young guys worked their tails off for 6 days straight and even had to put up with my ignorant and corrupt HOA trying to interfere (illegal in my state to impede solar generation projects). However, the downside of this whole thing has been dealing remotely with Tesla Energy. It has been 2 months since the roof installation and I still do not have permission to operate from my utility due to Tesla holding things up. Tesla has not even submitted the application. My project advisor changed at least 3 times during the project and it takes on average about a week to get an email response to a question. I have done lots of home improvement projects and renovations to my house and I have never had such a lack of responsiveness from a contractor. Completely unacceptable. read more

tesla.com says $11k, cheaper than Solar Solutions and others $14k to $17k, but gave up after a month. Get your deposit refunded! Easy to sign up with a credit card. Tech was on time, but took four hours!! and kept returning for more photos. They sent a nice email saying the estimate would take a week, and all the remaining steps. Two weeks later, a random person calls and claims they have to cancel the project, my roof is not solar-ready. Instead of explaining what she means, she suggests I just tell a roofer, they'll know exactly what to do. A week later, they claim my refund is almost ready. Well, all righty, roughly about the last day of August 2018, someone banged on my front door, and leaned on my doorbell. Bang bang bang! Ding ding ding! I came running, thinking, Oh, heck! There's an emergency . . . a mugging? A house fire? Somebody having a baby? I was ready to leap into action. It was a marketer from Solar City. I tear open my front door and the marketer, a young man, gives me a big, unctuous grin, greets me, and tells me his name. (Very carefully, he pronounced his name, to try to create a bond with me, right away . . . a manipulative tactic I instantly despise.) I ask him if there were an emergency, and he says, a little importantly, No, I'm a site surveyor. I ask him why he banged on my door, and leaned on my doorbell, and what's a site surveyor, anyway? He gets flustered and mumbles a few things. I ask him again, why did he bang on my door, and lean on my doorbell, because, unless there's a real emergency, then banging on my door like that is aggressive and manipulative. What kind of mood does he expect me to be in after he does that? He mumbles something to the effect that most houses don't have working doorbells. That was actually the guy's argument. "Most of these houses don't have working doorbells." Keeping my voice calm, I ask him to please leave. Now he's yammering and looking aggrieved and nervous because he has banged on my door and leaned on my doorbell causing me to stomp out like a troll from a cave. He's shrinking away, but also smirking sarcastically, and waving his hands. Please get me: I am all in favor of solar panels, and I think every house and business should have them installed standard. It just makes sense. As a nation, America should subsidize solar panels (not put tariffs on them). We could employ hundreds of thousands of people in the solar panel industry in America. That would be a fine step toward keeping this country, to use a term, GREAT. But this kind of aggressive marketing makes me think twice about working with Solar City. Met a guy from Tesla SolarCity in Home Depot, thought it was worth checking out. First time the sales rep came out seemed interesting so decided to have the house checked out for the quote. Guys came out to check the roof and electric. After they left starting having electrical issues, turns out they damaged a main breaker while inspecting. Sales rep said that they would fix it. Second time sales rep was supposed to come out, he showed up 2 and a half hours late for appointment without calling till he showed up wondering why it was no longer a good time. Putting solar panels on our roof could not have been more painless. They handled all of the details, took time to answer all of our questions and made sure that we were more than just happy. Short of the time it took for Pepco and the county inspections -- everything was super smooth and very timely. The amount of money you will make over 20 years with a lease from SolarCity is more than you will make in most savings accounts. If you have a roof -- you should have solar panels on it! I live in Baltimore, I had a house fire Sept. 9,2020 It is now Dec. we are supposed to have a panel box replace. After calling every 2 weeks to no avail the panel boxes aren't replaced as of yet. The response from telsa is we are waiting on operation to schedule you for replacement. People tell me why it's takes 4 months to replace a panel box. I am a happy Tesla car owner, but Tesla Energy has been terrible. My system has been down almost 30% of the time since it was installed, and Tesla seems completely incapable of addressing the problem. They schedule service, then don't show (third missed appointment last week). It has been down months, and no one at Tesla Energy has any authority or willingness to do anything. My wife thinks I have a $30k paperweight on my roof, because that is all it is. 3 Powerwalls, etc, but those are sitting at zero charge for months, because the solar does not work. What a load of crock. I had a sales guy show up to go over my energy bill, claiming how much I would save if I go solar back In Sept. As other reviewers claimed, quick to sell, yet shallow on the details. I was given a quote for a PPA program, but also inquired about a purchase/finance for the 6 kW system. The latter was glazed over. Upon reading the contract, I had a load of questions, of which were emailed to the sales guy. They were never answered, esp how my BGE rate was only ~$0.08/kW vs $0.12/kW by SolarCity. Specific questions like how would surplus be credited if there are rate differences, delivery charges on BGE bills, and other minute details laid in the contract. Essentially, it was radio silent! At the same time, I kept getting continuous calls of scheduling a tech to inspect the roof, pictures of thermostat, checking WiFi, etc as those are needed to enable the install, and an accurate quote. I finally went ahead to continue, after a divisional mgr contacted me, after providing the details of my experience. Whilst all the commotion, SC kept badgering me or a copy of my BGE Bill. Good thing I couldn't remember my login info! When all the technical stuff had to be done, I still had no response from the sales guy, or a quote on a purchase option of the panels. I finally went ahead and sent them a copy of my BGE Bill, sans personal info. I figured all they needed was the detailed usage of energy to calculate. The sales guy finally calls me on a Saturday, indicating that they STILL needed my bill! Really?? Did you not open the PDF file that you were cc'ed in a email? When I went into detail that my latest bill was sent, which provided 1 year of usage, the sales guy was confused. I finally told him that in the PDF file I blocked out the Meter info. He gave me some load of BS indicating a the meter number was needed to validate my BGE acct. He even offered to come to my house on a that afternoon to pick up a copy of my BGE Bill! The last time I gave a sales guy my meter number was Direct Energy, who tried to fraudulently sign me up as he posed to be a PSEG service guy. From experience, I knew better than to give this info out. Essentially, by signing up for SC, you are giving up your roof space, and mandated to purchase every kW produced, with an annual rate increase of ~3% for 20 years for the PPA option. Utility rates are variable, but public service can only charge you the rate that the company purchased it at (market rate). Signing up for SC, if you read the fine print, negates you from any tax credits, forfeiting it to Solar City instead. I think I will take my business elsewhere, to other more trustworthy companies, and save the environment. I still need to make that call to cancel any other further interactions! As of Dec 1st, I still get calls and emails about the SC need of a BGE Bill. Let's see if SC tries to bind me into the initial contract. Several of my solar panels leaked and my system was down for 9 months in 2020. My contract provides for me to get paid, if it does not generating yearly goals 45 days into the new year. It is now over 6 months late and "the check is in the mail!" I won't even get started on the circus of delays to get the panels replaced almost a year after they started acting up. read more

At the end of May I signed up with SolarCity and quickly became an ambassador after a personal long due-diligence process. Sadly, there was a question I didn't know to ask....and I need to offer a warning to those who are considering SC now. We went thru the site visit and all seemed on track...then there was a long silence, longer than the week I'd been told to expect. Finally I called...and it turned out that because asbestos shingles lurked beneath the aluminum siding on my house (I'd had no idea of this), I had been disqualified without notification. The rep, Tonya Hare, provided no further information, and there was no official postal or email communication from SC regarding the reason. According to Ms. Hare I was required to "remediate the situation" but there were no details about said situation, nor precisely what remediation was required. I am still processing the outrage. Presumably any asbestos exposure would come through attaching the inverter box (i.e., drilling four bolt-holes through the aluminum siding, something BG&E had succeeded in doing without issue when they installed their new meter) to the side of my house - not by attaching multiple panels to the roof. One would think that industrial masks would mitigate that risk. Ms. Hare agreed that it was absurd to require that my house be stripped and re-sided (which I'd been considering in the long run, but not this year) just to install an inverter box. She said she'd get back to me in a day or two... Since then three weeks have passed. I have left multiple phone messages and sent multiple emails to Ms. Hare and an email to the CEO of Solar City. No response. No acknowledgement of the contract I'd signed, no official notification of the reasons for my disqualification or what I could have done had I wanted to meet their specs (of which, BTW, there was no mention in the contract). Nothing. Since then I have heard that a friend who signed up with SC also had asbestos shingle under her siding, and it was not an issue. I am now warning anyone thinking of going with @SolarCity, to double their due diligence - and be ABSOLUTELY certain they know what is under their siding...and if they want a company to treat them with the respect due a contractual (and/or ambassador) relationship, to look elsewhere. I have been trying to schedule to have the solar inverter panels moved for over six months. We are building an addition and need to have them taken off the wall and moved around the corner to a different side of the house. All the work is held up waiting for Tesla to move the damn solar inverter panels. Is there any choice or will we just have to take them off the walls ourselves? Oh at first they told us that we would have to pay the upfront costs(over a thousand dollars) before they would even send us a contract. I told them that is not how it goes first you send me the contract to read then I decide if you are going to do it and then when you have done the work I pay you. This was on a chat and I took pictures of the conversation with my cell phone so I have proof of their attempt to make me pay to receive the contract. Very, very sleazy !!! read more

Don't Buy from SolarCity. They Scammed Me I'm an 88-year-old man from Baltimore living with a leaky roof causing my bedroom to be a soggy, rain and snow-soaked mess. I have to wear a mask so I won't breathe in the mold, and I have to heat my house with my oven because of the hole in my ceiling. All because the SolarCity rep who visited me a few years ago to sell me panels, lied to me. I was rushed through the sales process without even a copy of the contract to read at my own pace. I felt pressured. The sales rep helped me sign a contract that was on the computer, and I'm not very good with computers. I also asked if the roof would be ok for solar panels, and she said it would be fine. Guess what? Now I have roof problems. I contacted customer service to tell them my roof needs repairing so the panels have to come off and then be put back on. When they sold me the program, the rep said if I needed "removal and reinstallation," there would be no charge. Now, when I need it done, customer service is saying it costs $499.99 and it will be 6 months before they can do it and there was nothing further they could do. I'm on a very small, fixed income. I cannot afford that fee. And I trusted what the lady told me during her visit. I'm writing to the public so that no one has to go through what I'm going through. **RENTER BEWARE** Approximately nine months after installing solar panels, the box broke. Contacted customer service and wait time for service call is 1 month. Service technician comes out and says you need a new box. Still waiting WEEKS later for a new box and YET we are still paying the monthly ~$80 fee for a broken system. It's one thing if there is a time lag for a repair; however, don't make the customer pay for a service that is not being provided. read more

BELOW is a quick synopsis of what we have dealt with since the system STOPPED working in June of 2016!!! - August 2016: Tesla purchases SolarCity at a fire sale price from his cousins - June 2018: System went offline;no technician dispatched although one was requested - July 2018: Charged $100 for system being offline...that's right, Tesla charged US for their equipment failure - August 2018: No technician; charged another $100 - September 2018: Tech finally shows up. Tells us the Gateway Device isnt working; tech orders a new gateway device; that's right another $100 because it's offline. Almost seems like they dont want to really fix it because they can keep charging you a penalty of $100 for every month or fraction thereof that the system is offline...even if its their equipment at fault...where is the incentive to EVER fix it - October 2018: Gateway device arrives in the mail. No technician. Tesla customer I DONT care rep tells us to install it ourselves since it is so easy. We install it PER THEIR instructions. Guess what?! It works for exactly three hours and drops offline; I call customer does NOT care line to inform them of the problem. They tell me they can someone out the first week of December. Yes, another $100 stolen - November 2018: No connectivity; another $100 PLUS I had to pay Southern Maryland Electric fo power that was supposed to be provided by Mr. Musk's company - December 2018: Tech doesn NOT show up for scheduled appointment; doesn't even call...just doesn't show up. We inform customer can care less representative; Another $100 stolen - January 2019: Another appointment scheduled for technician; another appointment broken; at least this time he calls; another $100 taken - February 2019: At this point Tesla keeps charging $100 PLUS some arbitrarily concocted algorithm used to "ESTIMATE" what the system produced EVEN though Tesla can NOT prove it produced any electricity, FOR THROUGH PRESENT (JULY 2020) --- YES, THATS RIGHT---Tesla has racked up over $2400 in penalty charges against us because they either are INCAPABLE or UNWILLING to repair the equipment they are contractually bound to repair. March 2019 through June 2020. We attempt twelve more times to get a technician out to FIX the system. Most never show up. ONE finally does in May of 2020. Darren told us, "Tesla does NOT have enough qualified technicians in this area (Southern Maryland) to repair all of the systems that are failing. They only have SIX technicians for ALL OF VIRGINIA, MOST OF MARYLAND AND ALL OF DELAWARE. Additionally, Mr. Darren told us that the inverter's installed by SolarCity are NOT compatible with the gateway devices that Tesla uses and that's why your system goes back online for a couple of days or a few hours and then drops again. The thing is that even though the system claims to be online, it is NOT online. Something to do with the firmware in the inverter. JULY 2020: After 6 phone calls and demand for management intervention I receive a call from the "Executive Resolution Team" at 5 pm on Friday, July 10, 2020. Ms. McCready assured me that she will immediately do a FULL REVIEW of how this happened and get the system back up and running ASAP. I ask her when, what day, will I have results of your full review. She promises, in writing, that on Thursday July 16, 2020 I will receive a full accounting of what happened and a precise accounting of how much power has been generated through the inverter since installation in 2015. July 14, 2020: Technician Tim Kirkland troubleshoots, FROM OUTSIDE the house and inverter, that an arc penetration card is faulty. He was scheduled for between 5 and 7 on July 13, 2020. He showed at 130, took a reading from outside and concluded that the arc protection card is the problem. Now, this is the fifth tech in 24 months that has actually showed up and had enough respect for me to discuss the system. Here's the problem. Shocker, Tesla management NEVER reaches out to Mr. Kirkland to instruct him to retrieve the historical data produced through the inverter. You see, the inverter records locally how much energy was produced. HOWEVER he wasnt told to pull the data. So how is Ms. McCready going to arrive at a resolution on Thursday. And Tesla even filed a negative payment report to the credit bureau DESPITE having contract information. Solar City, owned by Tesla, was worth the wait for the installation. The paperwork time was a little slow due to confusion who needed to be on the contract. However, the installation of the Solar Panels, and the inverter assembly went smoothly. This was completed on Friday morning 10/28. The installation crew arrived on time, around 7AM, was conducted professionally. Now, the next phase of Solar City effort will be for the Baltimore County folks come out and approve the installation. Then it goes to BGE, who comes out and replaces the house meter to one that runs backward as well as forward. It is when the panels produce more electricity than you use that the meter runs backward. It is during those times, producing more power than consumed, you build a bank of energy credits. Anyway, so fare Solar City do an excellent install and we can't wait for the system to be turned on and for us to benefit from Solar Power. read more

SolarCity is absolutely the worst company ever. In September 2018, Vincent Ekuban came to our home and while going thru his presentation broke our Italian marble coffee table top. He assured us that his management team would replace the table. He had Albert Sessoms the customer care manager contact us and he told us to buy a replacement table and send him the receipt. We purchased the new coffee table sent him the receipt in October 2018 and haven't been reimbursed yet. Vincent Ekuban, Albert Sessoms, his Manager Shannon Ross hasn't returned our calls or emails. We've filed a claim in local court and have a court date of 4-15-2019 to hopefully resolve this. Stay away from this company! read more

Buyer Beware! To be transparent let me begin by saying the system was purchased all cash by the previous owner to my house. I have been in the home for almost 2 years and noticed a few months ago a ground fault error. I called the Solar City customer service and they said they will call me back to schedule a service call. A month later, I called again, and they apologized and said a service rep would come in a week (first sign of problems with service). Once the tech showed up, I was told that my house was hit by lightening and that I needed to repair one panel. Aside from the shock of knowing the one in the million lighten hit had occurred, I said I wanted it repaired. I was informed that it was under warranty and they would replace it. I was told a rep from customer service would call me about next steps. Another month passes and no call. I happen to have the service tech's number from his visit, and asked him to followup up....another week later...I get a call from the service manager saying the panels are hard to find because they are no longer manufactured, and they will look for a replacement from other vendors. I was shocked they wouldn't stock parts when giving a 5 year warranty. Another 2 weeks passes and I am told they have located the panel and its one the way and I should have it in 1-2 weeks. 2 weeks passes and I get a call saying that I have a appointment to install next month. After a spirited conversation, they agree to come the next day.....this is when it gets interesting. During that installation...the service tech tells me that they were wrong....its wasn't lightening, but that squirrels had chewed on the wire. Now its not one panel that is bad, but 6. Oh by the way, pests are not covered by the warranty. Forget about the lack of the ability to do their job the first time in checking what was wrong.....now all of a sudden the warranty does not apply and I have to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket. I refuse to pay and they offer to turn on the ones I have...only 8 out of my 16 can be turned on....so basically I will get half the power supply. Just when I was finally calming down at the bait and switch of the service side.....I am now being told that the second assessment was also wrong. Tesla maintenance decided our system was under-preforming so took the system down on April 20, 2021 (without notifying us) When I called to find out what was going on, I found out they hadn't bothered to schedule a repair appointment. The first available was June 4. Crew came out and didn't finish the job, left trash in the lawn and on the driveway and didn't communicate status. I again had to call to find out it had been rescheduled for June 24. No one showed up on June 24, was rescheduled to July 23. I was just told there is no record of whether they did any work or not, but the system is still off and maintenance has been again scheduled for November 23. Did I mention that through all of this Tesla continues to bill us the amount they estimate our system should be producing, even though they took the system down and are unable to complete the repair? Customer "Service" tells me to call Scheduling who tells me to call Billing who tells me to call Customer Service. All of them claim there is no one to expedite my complaint to... read more

Tesla's solar service is awful and it's customer service is THE worst I've ever dealt with. They advertise great promise on their product, but fail to mention the hundreds of thousands of circumstances where they can't generate enough power to benefit the household. My house is not getting enough power from their service at all so I called them requesting to cancel my contract. I read the numbers off the smart meter in comparison to my monthly bill, and even after acknowledging that they weren't producing enough, the customer service rep refused to cancel my contract, stating we would have to be producing 0 WATTS for them to even consider cancelling. He told me the only option I had was to sell my house??? Absolutely terrible service. Don't want it, don't need it. Please be careful before signing up for this lifelong contract that will eat your money away with no regard for it's customer benefit. read more

I reached out to SolarCity to get a quote for setting up a solar PPA on my home. From the beginning, the salespeople I spoke to were SUPER high-pressure, pushy and at the same time really light on actual facts/ details. I wanted specific details like the energy rate I was locking in at, the terms of the contract, etc etc, and they seemed to want me to sign up ASAP without providing any of that info. The more I read about other people's issues with SolarCity, the more that lack of detail seemed concerning. After a few unhelpful calls I gave up. But SolarCity kept calling, at least 12 times in the next 20 days or so (none of which I answered). Finally, I answered a call, told them I definitely wasn't interested and to please stop calling. The salesdude's response? "Sooo, you're telling me you don't care about saving money??" At that point, I hung up. I have no issue with the idea or the concept but I will say that when something goes wrong with your system it will not be fixed any time soon. I am currently scheduled for about 5 weeks out and having no idea if they are going to charge me the monthly lease fees or not. Honestly, the system came with the house when we purchased and in time will be replaced with a company that wants to ensure customers are getting what they signed up for. I can understand a week wait but for them to take 5 weeks to even come out and look at the system is beyond me! I will not make this mistake again!!! read more

Reading the other reviews, I feel like I am dealing with a different company. It's been 6 months since I signed a contract with solar city for a residential solar installation, and I was just informed it would be at least 6-8 more weeks before the system could be installed and turned on. I am installing a small 4+ KW system on a single roof pane. I could order the panels and inverter being installed for next week delivery on the internet. I have no idea why the project will end up taking 8+ months. I have dealt with at least 10 individual solar city employees for various aspects of the installation (there is not 1 point of contact here) and end up dealing with more new people as the process drags on (some local, some on California time). The number of people on their side involved in this project means that all sorts of miscommunications occur because folks aren't familiar with the project but for their one small piece. Hopefully the project ends smoothly and all this will be worthwhile. read more

I spent almost 1.5 years working with SolarCity, first as a potential month-to-month customer comparing companies, and then when I decided to purchase the system outright for the tax, surplus electricity SRECs, and house appreciation benefits. I realize some other people on here may have had problems or dealt with salespeople they didn't like, but beyond a few typical misunderstandings along the way, I consider my experience a success. What people need to realize with any solar investment is that it is going to be a long, complex process with multiple parties (you, SolarCity, the county regulator, and the local power company), so be tolerant of ambiguity and don't get your mind stuck on a specific activation date. If purchasing the system, I also highly suggest getting a few estimates from multiple vendors concurrently, as SolarCity will match the lowest per-watt price, potentially saving you $1,000+ on installation. You need to drive the process forward if things are slowing down too much. Based upon my experience and what I was told by a realtor neighbor who rents her system, SolarCity does the best job of managing the complex regulations (as opposed to Vivint). They also seem to be able to get the system up and running the quickest. Going solar is not a typical home improvement project, but I am satisfied with my system and recommend doing it if this is something you have a strong personal financial and environmental reason for doing. read more
