Most of the Brooklyn restaurants I visit are all presentation with middling food. Cute to look at, a snooze to eat. Testo ain't like that. The vibe is unpretentious but confident, and the food backs it up. We had the octopus, a salad, the taglioni and the cavatelli, and a slice of ricotta cheese cake. Everything was balanced and wholesome, true to Testo's hand made in house style of cooking. Service was excellent and we felt very welcome as we demolished our meal. I ordered the Ravioli di Fungi al Gorgonzola, which was accompanied by cubed focaccia, as a pickup, and arrived as it was coming out of the kitchen. The dish included 5 raviolis. Nothing to complain about as far as the flavor of the raviolis and the sauce, but by the time I got home -- a literal 5-min walk away) -- the raviolis were luke warm (some weren't even warm, just room temperature-feeling). The bread was tough/rubbery - tasted as though it had been microwaved to possibly warm it up, initially. Maybe the temperature is better dine-in because I definitely don't recommend ordering to-go. read more

The only bad thing I can say about this restaurant is that you'll have trouble picking what to order because of the wide choice of delicious items on the menu, from Italian classics to one of their specialties Padine (think flatbread sandwich). My friends and I had a great brunch here. It was hard to decide what to order because all of it sounds delicious so good. I ordered the carbonara because it was late enough in the day it felt appropriate for breakfast. It was incredible, and I am picky with how I like carbonara. GJ was our server and he could not have been more fun to interact with or knowledgeable about the food. One person in our party is pescatarian and he alerted us that the gravy with the lobster bisquit is cooked with sausage meat, so helpful to know and she didn't think to ask at first and nearly ate it. I'm not gonna lie, I came here after a fun day of consuming several Aperol Spritz's. This restaurant was recommended to us by a bartender at a spot nearby to Testo. I'd never heard of it but I figured it must be good! For an appetizer we got calamari. They really give you a lot! It was delicious. For dinner our table ordered an assortment of pasta dishes. I believe I had the gnocchi special. Everyone loved their pasta and it was gone within minutes. It wasn't super busy and was very cute and authentic on the inside. They even gave us some complimentary Limoncello at the end of our meal! Not sure if I would come out of my way to eat here again but it was excellent and I'll be back if I'm out and about in the area again. read more

I had two very different experiences with takeout and dining in. When I got the butternut squash tortellini to go, it was genuinely one of the best pasta dishes I've had in New York. It also came with bread which was great to dip in the sauce. When I dined in, I had really high expectations because of the excellent takeout and stellar reviews. Service was super friendly and we started off asking to sit outside because the back room unfortunately had an unpleasant smell lingering. The patio was lovely and I enjoyed the bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon we got. For appetizers we tried the mussels in white wine sauce and piadina with ricotta, kale, and tomato. I enjoyed the mussels, but noticed they were advertised as being served with garlic toast and we didn't get any. We also didn't get any bread in the restaurant. The piadina flatbread was tasty but the tomato wasn't seasoned at all and the dish could have used some salt and pepper. The kale wouldn't have been missed if there was some basil or even spinach. Pasta-wise, the pappardelle was fresh and al dents, but again lacked salt. Ditto with both sauces we had. Mine included sausage and kale and the kale could have been cooked longer, but I loved the flavor of the sauce and the Parmesan cheese. Dessert was our favorite course. Excellent tiramisu and espresso in the affogato was strong, how I like it. I really wanted to be blown away by this place and I would come back just to see if it was an off night. read more

This place must be related to Il Passatore in some way because their menu is almost identical! We started off with the fried calamari, shrimp and zucchini as well as the Brussels sprouts with pancetta and pecorino. The calamari was good although it was a little on the bland side, the garlic aioli however was phenomenal. Brussel sprouts were very yummy but my only complaint is that they were a little strong on the cheese. We then got the rib eye steak and gnocchi with eggplant. The steak was absolutely delicious- juicy, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. It was served with caramelized onions and rosemary potatoes, it is also very cheap. The gnocchi was great too but nothing extraordinary. The staff is very friendly and attentive, they get extra points for offering us more bread (it is SO good). Ambiance is very low key and intimate, plus the tables are nicely spaced out. They have outdoor seating too if you prefer. Overall had a really good time and would go again. read more

This is all you want in a tiny neighborhood classic. Staff is extremely polite and attentive without being the slightest bit overbearing. The service is always quick and accommodating. We even like sitting outside in the warmer months, even though it is a sliver of tables and not much view. Food is homemade and tasty, to say the least. We used to stick with just the calamari as an app but found a new favorite in the Aranchini (rice ballz). Tiramisu is SO GOOD. Favorite mains - the butternut squash sage dish is rich and has a strong depth of flavor. My boyfriend enjoys the seafood dishes, namely the lobster biskweet which serves a nice portion of the crusteceaan friend (or... not "friend" anymore lol). I recommend Testo to anyone in the neighborhood looking for a great, inexpensive Italian meal! We came with a larger group and were graciously accomodated. Their fresh pastas are simple and delicious, with quality ingredients and reasonable portions. Their appetizer selection is relatively straightforward - execution on the calamari was really good (crispy and light, not rubbery) and their pate on toast with jam was perfect. Wine selection was very reasonably priced, with a broad spectrum of Italian varietals. The night were there had only one server, but we felt pampered and never wanted for attention. My favorite restaurant in New York. When I lived around the corner, I was working crazy hours. I would stop by right before closing, put in an order of strozzapreti al ragu and a salad to go, and drink a glass of wine at the bar while they prepared the food (homemade pasta and long-simmered sauce, natch). It was perfection. I still favor the strozzapreti (though I'll dabble in the gnocchi and tortelli as well as the daily specials). I no longer live anywhere near, but I still make it over here every now and then for dinner with friends. Warm, relaxed, affordable, delicious, and you can order wine by the carafe. I think this place is really special. Delicious food, nice ambiance and above all else, incredibly reasonable prices. A friend of mine was visiting from out of town and craving Italian food, and we decided to check this place out as it is walking distance from my apartment. WOW! My expectations were far exceeded. Dishes ordered: Fritto di Calamari e Zucchine ($9.50) -- we absolutely loved this as a starter and I thought having pieces of zucchini mixed in with the calamari was a nice addition. We asked for extra lemon with ours, and the sauce that came with it was flavorful as well. Tortelli di Zucca e Olio Tartufato ($12) -- this was a butternut squash ravioli in a butter sauce with truffle oil. AMAZING! I can't wait to eat this dish again. The portion sizes were generous and I loved every bite of this. Ravioli di Funghi al Gorgonzola ($11) -- this is the dish my friend ordered, I didn't try it because I'm not a fan of blue cheese or any of its relatives. She absolutely loved it though! The calamari appetizer was fine but also disappointing. The only redeeming quality is that by nyc standards it was cheap with main courses just under $20. Meh. In 14 minutes you could walk from Testo to Il Passatore. The menu & underwhelming food would be the same at both places. The Caprese con Mozzarella di Bufala ($10) was really disappointing. The tomato wasn't ripe, the cheese was dry & the garnish was ONE basil leaf. The plate needed a healthy drizzle of olive oil. Where was the waiter to bring this? Outside, smoking. Rip off. The entrees were fine. The handmade pasta in the ragu was great. The sauce itself was thin & kinda like the sauce in Chef Boyardee. Once upon a time, Chef Boyardee was a great champion of Italian cuisine. I wasn't surprised that my steak was overcooked. The poor thing was dry & gristle-pocked, but the garnishes made it more enjoyable. The caramelized onions atop the steak were the best part of my meal, really delicious. The small space & atmosphere are charming, i expect to see a lot of traffic here.
