Got my guinea pigs nails cut and even bought some in store items for them. The lady that trimmed my piggies nails was very knowledgeable and told me how to hold them and what exactly to feed them at their ages. This place is so nice, low prices that go to a good cause. I got a lot of stuff for way less than I would've got at big corporations. The animals here are also very well cared for and definitely loved by the volunteers. Animals that are sick or pregnant are labeled so they are not adopted out which is nice to know. These animals seem so happy, saw many popcorns from the piggies as well! read more

A great rescue devoted to finding forever homes for abandoned or surrendered guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas, and other small furry critters! All the animals waiting for homes have nice big condos to live and play in and get fresh veggies every day. It's obvious they are very well cared for at this rescue, which makes them even better companion animals when they finally go to their forever homes. There is even a store in the rescue open every Saturday so you can but your small animal, cat, dog, or bird supplies from a nonprofit, cheaper than Petco or Petsmart, and be supporting the rescue at the same time! I reached out on the Petfinder website and didn't hear anything. Then I emailed inquiring about a bonded pair I saw online. The email said I need to fill out the adoption form so I did. It's been over a month now & I haven't heard anything from the rescue. The website says it can take a couple of weeks, but I thought I would hear something after a month. read more

Though I believe they do good work, Texas Rustlers Small Animal Rescue is very unprofessional. After filling out their application, I received the following reply based on the additional comments I left on my application. I will not make inferences and judgements as this person did about my character as she doesn't know me and I don't know her. But I was not rude or abusive as she proclaims. I am an animal advocate and lover. I am also forthright. I also know that I wouldn't want her for a teacher as she's very comfortable at telling people that they've failed. YIKES! FROM TRGPR- I'm rather shocked at your audacity in filling out your application this way, but since you have I'll take a moment to educate you. We are an organization to support and advocate for the animals, we are not here for the happiness or convenience of humans. It sounds like you're not truly aware of just how many guinea pigs are dumped, fed to snakes, left outside to die, let go in parks, and/or literally thrown away into dumpsters while inside of their cages. We are, and we screen people to make sure we can feel confident that the piggies and rabbits in our care are going to responsible forever homes. The application is definitely thorough, and it is a litmus test for us to see how respectful and understanding potential adopters are by carefully reading their responses. You have failed this test, obviously, by chastising us while trying to adopt Frank. Frank who you are likely only interested in because he is a bit of a novelty breed. You clearly don't understand guinea pigs well to enough to understand why we only adopt out in pairs and you're clearly putting your own needs and wants above that of what is best for the animal. Again, fail. Frank was actually happily paired and adopted just days ago, so it looks like we may know what's best for the animals after all. We run this rescue as a volunteer mission - we don't get paid, we give up time we could be spending on ourselves, our family, our hobbies, our jobs to run this rescue out of the kindness of our hearts and due to our compassion for the animals. We definitely can chose who we work with to adopt out our animals and who we won't work with because they are rude or abusive to us. Again, you failed. You sound like someone who wants what you want when you want it and doesn't actually care about others - so buying from a breeder will now be your best option. For every animal in my care, trying to acquire Frank has been the most work and requirements. I am knowingly filling out this application even though you require that he have a companion before he's adopted. But some animals prefer to be alone and I think this requirement is unfair. If Frank has been a single pig and he's an adult pig and he's been surrendered, it could be because he didn't get along with other pigs. If you felt like he should be a pair, you could have already bonded him with another pig. I know that the care I give him will be light years better than most families with children who purchase animals as a novelty, get tired of them, and surrender them to a shelter because there is no one to take care of them anymore. These people are trying to do a good thing but they do not have the resources to do it properly. They put you thru a lengthy adoption process but they are not checking the animals out and they are sending out sick animals. After only 1 month and 3 thousand dollars, our guinea pig didn't make it - from kidney stones that it obviously had for months prior to us adopting it. One problem is that they have children volunteering...I literally saw children under 5 cleaning out crates. If they are not staffed and resourced to have volunteers, they shouldn't charge the prices they do or put you through a rigorous evaluation. Questioning my own character as if I wouldn't do whatever it takes to take care of the animal but them not caring at all that we are without a pet now speaks volumes about their own character. read more

This is definitely a rescue for little animals by people who have big hearts! When you pull up to the building you are not sure what to expect. It's a plain looking building with a blue door, kinda in the middle of nowhere. Once inside though you are welcomed to a world of numerous little piggies, rabbits, and a couple other little animals. The guinea pigs all live in pairs of two with large boxes and plenty of hay. They are well fed, compassionately cared for, and given love. There are so many cute little guys, and some hairless ones that I'm sure someone thinks are cute. You can tell the workers care about their animals and will answer your questions honestly and in depth. They are definitely not trying to get rid of their animals just to make some money. We were looking for a class pet was told that you needed to buy two at a time because they need socialization. Unfortunately, class doesn't have room for two so we left empty handed, but enjoyed getting to hold and play with some of the piggies. My kids even got to feed some carrots. Support local businesses and people who love and care for animals. If you are looking to adopt please give this place a try. read more

1 star because they managed to reply. They're a joke! I emailed this facility because #1 they were near me and #2 they seemed willing to help...until they responded. I told this person that due to a loved one's health I needed to surrender 2 Guinea pigs, several gerbils and Roborovski hamsters. They told me they couldn't take the Guinea pigs but the others Yes. They needed to know ages, gender and breed. Once that information was provided they changed their tune and refused to assist me and directed me to the humane society. My animals are well taken care of, their cages (HabitTrail) ceramic homes, etc. They had the audacity to close their messae by saying, best of luck. Who ever they have volunteering really needs to take a proper etiquette course as well as learning how to deal with such situations especially when someone's health is involved. I'm glad I found out ahead of time how they operate before surrendering my babies because who knows where their heart really is. read more

Outstanding place tucked away in an industrial area of Lewisville. There's so many adorable guinea pigs and other rodents (as well as some birds) available for adoption here. They also have a small but very comprehensive retail store that stocks everything Guinea pigs and rodents need. Every kind of hay is for sale here, along with treats, critical care feeding formula, pellets, bedding, water bottles, etc. They stock QUALITY goods only, such as the Oxbow brand. This place was filthy! On top of that the pig that I adopted came with a respiratory infection( and ringworm)This infection turned into my worst nightmare, she didn't respond to the ten day treatment ( though after a month of antibiotics it is clearing up) the infection spread like wildfire all of my pigs caught it at least once and so did my hamster. A guinea pig "found us" when we were walking in a nearby playground; clearly someone had dumped it. We named him Komodo and decided to keep him. After reading online that guinea pigs are social creatures, we knew we should get a cage mate for it, and after digging some more, we found Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue. This is a very unassuming, almost hidden place in a nondescript industrial strip mall type place in Lewisville. However, inside is an enormous amount of heart and love for this small creatures (and rabbit and other smaller rodents too). Large open top cages, lots of hay, and so, so many guinea pigs! Each has a name and sex on a card on the front of the cage. Pairs or trios of piggies that have been together previously are still caged together. They accept "surrenders" when families realize that gp are actually more expensive and time consuming to have as pets than one would think....and then find them forever homes. And the finding of the forever home is a serious process for them. To find a cage mate for Komodo, we first had to visit the resuce and fill out a background form/application. Then after a two week waiting period, we brought Komodo to the resuce and had a "play date" with one of the other piggies there (Axel). The manager watched the playdate carefully with us, and interpreted for us all the noises and actions of the pigs, and was ready to intervene if it didn't look like the piggies got along. They did, so we ended up taking Axel home with us. We also learned how to make an extremely inexpensive and large cage for the two of them using materials they sell very cheaply in their store (only open Saturdays). They will also board pigs if you are going away for a while (although it is hard to get them to respond via email sometime, and you can't leave voicemails, so contact them a long time ahead of time). Note that this wonderful organization is run mostly by volunteers, so if you are looking for a place to offer a few hours of help each week they would certainly appreciate your time.
