I've been coming here for the past 6 weeks every Tuesday for their daily special which is the hamburger steak. I have never had a problem with the food quality or service. Both have been consistent so far! Portion size is also great for the price. The daily special runs for around 8 bucks and boy does it fill you up. Was a bit skeptical at first because there was a sign when you enter that said "Please Wait To Be Seated" and it was probably 3-5 minutes before someone said seat yourself. Once we were seated we received menus and our drink order was taken...and we waited again. In all fairness, it was Saturday night and they were busy. Finally, a different waiter came to take our order and seriously, our food was served in less than 5 minutes, piping hot & Delicious! I had the small chicken fried steak which filled my plate! The meat was tender and flavorful and not a processed, preformed steak. The batter was tasty and not over done. The green beans were very tasty as well. Hubby had the The Big Daddy? Burger...a half pound burger with a half pound of chopped brisket on top of it, served on a jalapeño bun with jalapeño coke slaw. It was HUGE! Hubby enjoyed it greatly! I have to say this place has a mix of southern charm with their friendly staff and home cooking. I've been to Texas Traditions numerous times. I have had pretty much everything on the menu... breakfast to regular menu and their homemade pies..theynever disappoint. On the weekends they have live music which adds to ambiance of this unique establishment. I have to say the waitress (Autumn) is always on point and never slacks in her customer service. So if you want a little piece of Texas..great food accompanied with an ice cold beverage and awesome people then you have to go to Texas Traditions. Worst please I've ever eaten! Chicken fried chicken was Burnt to a crisp on the out side and tough on the inside. Baked potato was hot to the touch but hard and cold on the inside. For my kid I order a cheeseburger and got a hamburger then they simply slapped on a cold piece of cheese to which my kid wouldn't eat it. Got the Katy Tiger Football coupon books today and decided to use one and eat at Texas Tradition. We have been here before and food was good. However, recently I had heard their catfish was delicious. Being a Mississippi boy, and knowing good catfish, I decided to try it. It did not disappoint. Where I prefer thin pieces and crispy exterior, moist interior, these were much thicker. The cornmeal batter was good and the catfish was cooked to perfection. Crispy/moist. I will definitely come here again for this. Upon leaving, I asked one of the waitstaff where the catfish came from. They could not tell me, only they purchase from Sysco. I know in some places it is not North American, farmed raised catfish but a species of catfish from Asia called Basa. If someone from Texas Tradition reads this, please let me know. Won't make a difference to me, but I like to know where my fish is from :). Also had the homemade peach cobbler with ice cream and it was good, not great. Cheap, southern cooking with a small town atmosphere. I have been eating here since high school (10+ years), so maybe its just the good vibes and nostalgia I get when coming here, but I always leave pleased and VERY full (and I don't eat for 24 hours afterward). Don't expect any healthy dishes... just come expecting to eat your weight in fried fattening food. The service is as expected... always welcoming, will holler across the way to see if you need a drink refill, and always willing to strike up a conversation about the "crazy weather we've been having". A visit here is good for the soul, and the home cooking is always consistent and tasty... especially if you don't want to stand in line at the Luby's cafeteria. read more

Massive 1/2 pound burger, with BBQ toppings, and fries for $13. Yes, it was excellent but it's hard to justify waiting for this great burger. Certainly the décor should lead you to believe this place may be a great deal the walls being unfinished raw OSB. Not so!! Now we get to the food quality. Blah.....sorry Texas Tradition but your less that acceptable fry portions paired with the bland everyday burger just didn't cut it. I wish I could give zero stars! I only went because my MC was giving extra miles because the food is only so-so. Canned green beans, powdered mash potatoes, bland gravy. The mac and cheese was good so I went back and ordered the chicken fried steak with said canned green beans and powered mash potatoes and was going to order some mac and cheese to go after. I ate probably half and then got to a thicker part of the chicken breast (which was very good) and the meat was mushy like it wasn't cooked and I looked and it was just barely pink but it was not cooked. I told the waiter who was very nice and he told a guy, maybe the manager IDK who came back with the plate and said it looked cooked to him. I told him I didn't want to eat raw chicken and please take it away. He didn't apologize or not another word just turned and walked away. I was charged full price and I will never go back! I used to be in the restaurant business and if a manager did that with a guest of mine he would be fired. The waiter, the ticket says Thomas T, was very nice and I feel bad about not tipping him but I was pretty pissed when I left. But remember that the majority of people are also not foodies, and they stick to what they know. This place has salty food, overcooked green beans, bacon flavor on everything. It wouldn't let me give zero or negative stars so here's my very generous 1 star. Came in and sat down- table behind was getting up to leave, 2 other tables were eating, ordered right away. Beer took forever- seriously, just pop the top off the bottle and walk it out, the place isn't full. Order another, appetizer FINALLY arrives. The 2 tables eat, pd and left and we're filled again. No food- ordered 30 min ago. The other two tables that changed patrons and another table got their appetizers AND meals. Still no meal. Left paying for what was received because my order "was entered" and they "have no control" over the order that meals are prepared but mine "is next". It's been an hour- I ordered chicken nachos, it doesn't get quicker or easier than that. I can't speak to how the food tastes because... I NEVER GOT IT!!! All I got was excuses, the right to watch everyone else around me eat, and to go orders get filled while I just sat there waiting. No updates, no apologies, just excuses when asked what was taking so long- that was after 45 min. It's NACHOS people, NACHOS!!!!! read more

This place was great for a weekday lunch. They have a great home cookin' menu! I loved my chicken fried steak and the sides. The side salad was better than I expected. They also carry several Texas wines, which I thought was a nice touch and definitely in line with their brand. I've lived in Texas for almost my entire life, and I don't seem to recall there being a tradition of slow, inattentive service and overpriced for the quality greasy food. We went here for breakfast and were thoroughly unimpressed. You can pretty much order your breakfast two ways: eggs with fatty meat or eggs with sugary starches. If you're looking for any semblance of vegetables or fruit on this menu, look elsewhere. They don't even have a veggie omelet or a western omelet or a freaking fruit salad option. Your choice for omelets are plain, meat, cheese, or meat and cheese. They don't even offer onions or peppers. Zero vegetables. I ordered a cheese omelet with a side cup of salsa just to break up the fat a little, and the waitress actually tried to talk me out of the salsa. "It's not very spicy. You sure you want it?" The fiance ordered a ham and cheese omelet, and then our waitress left. Thus began the nearly half hour wait for our food in which the fiance's burnt-tasting coffee was refilled once. For a solid fifteen minutes I did not see a single plate come out of the kitchen. When the two tables on either side of us did receive their food, there was something wrong with at least one plate at each table that had to be fixed. When we finally received our food, our waitress left before we could ask for butter for my grits and burned, dry Texas toast. After ten minutes of attempting to flag someone down the fiance had to go up to the counter and ask for butter. Otherwise, the food was pretty lackluster. Greasy and bland pretty much sums it up, and the salsa tasted like straight up tomato sauce, but at least THAT didn't have grease in it. The only saving grace food-wise was the biscuit that came with the fiance's breakfast. It was fluffy, slightly salty, and warm. Otherwise, everything else was gross. Towards the end of our meal, we heard the waitresses at the counter start to exclaim about how thankful they were that breakfast was over and how crazy it had been. At this point we had been there for an hour, and during that entire time a good 50% of the tables were completely empty. Ladies, you work at a restaurant, not a Blockbuster. Fifty percent capacity does not a crazy morning make. Perhaps the fiance and I missed the 7 AM rush, but something tells me the waitresses there are just lazy. I've never left anything lower than a 15% tip before. I guess there's a first time for everything. read more

Headed out to Snappy's famous breakfast spot in old Katy. TX for a country breakfast. Once in Katy we filled up the car before we got food. Talking with locals at the gas pump they suggested Texas Tradition over Snappy's. OK, we are game off to Texas Tradition we go - test one passed - Texas Tradition has a great and smooth parking lot that will accept an Italian performance car with a long nose without scraping on entrance. On first impressions - you realize not everyone has the same Texas Tradition's. The waitstaff wear Camouflage shirts, Katy still allows smoking but segregates the puff from non-puffing crowds - if you can with an imaginary dividing line, and evidently you cannot have an inch of wall space without decoration in some parts of Texas. Still we are about the omelette's, the pancakes, the oatmeal (?) well with lots of brown sugar and butter. Problem arrive late and breakfast time can turn into lunch only at Texas Tradition. After a full morning of car enthusiast stuff to prep for a brisk drive, we had pushed our arrival time out to early afternoon. Eyeing the plates and patrons on the way to our table, everyone at Texas Tradition was enjoying a burger or a CFS -- Chicken Fried Steak with white gravy. The waitress was pleasant and quickly suggested that Texas Tradition was known for their Texas Toothpicks - strips of jalapenos and onion and then deep fried. $6.95 - didn't try them - too much for two people. We did try her suggested chili cheeseburger and onion rings - $6.95. All burgers are 1/2 pound and looked great. My mate had another local favorite the CFC - Chicken Fried Chicken. Both orders were great but lacked enough gravy and chili for our taste. For $.75 and they will bring you more gravy and chili. I did not want my fries but for another $.75 had rings and gave those to my co-driver and these got a great review. The place was good - family place with great community pride - don't expect cheap but then the quality was higher than 59 Diner, Denny's, IHOP or the old New Orleans Po-Boy or Pig Stand. The place is friendly - people still speak from table to table as if all one big family. Worth a 30 mile drive in a car that gets 12 mpg (and less at speed)... I think so but I will have to go again and again before it becomes one of my Texas Traditions. read more

Texas Traditions has a Friday catfish special. I have been there on a Friday for the special several times. The last two times I have gone to eat there, I have noticed a SUBSTANTIAL decline in the quality of the food. The potato soup and mashed potatoes were just terrible. The taste of substandard instant potato mix was definitely apparent. Then I went there tonight, taking a long-time Katy resident for his first time. The catfish had noticeably been sitting under a heat lamp and was clearly not fresh. It was extremely rubbery and poor tasting. By far some of the worst tasting catfish I have had. Now the waitress was terrific in the entire situation. She kept the drinks filled and had the cook make up some fresh catfish which was noticeably better. The entire trip was on the road to recovery until I took the check to the register to pay/split the bill. The lady working the register was EXTREMELY RUDE. I asked a simple question regarding splitting an item (mind you the key punch register could accommodate anything being split.) The response I got was terrible rude, sarcastic, and demeaning. I felt she was insulting my intelligence, as did my friend. I quickly pointed out that nobody deserved to be talked to like that, much less a customer of a restaurant. Her reply was she needed a smoke break. I am so infuriated with the way I was treated by the lady working the register that I will not be returning to this terrible restaurant. read more

Decent little local join. Drive by on a Friday night and it looks like a pickup dealership. Average food, at best. Average beer list. I have done take out 2 times and dine in once. Both times the take out was super fast, dine in service was decent.
