We went for HRW with a reservation. It was packed so we were excited. There was a saxophonist and he was great, not too loud. The food just took way too long to come out. Our waitress was super sweet but you could tell they were either understaffed or not used to being that full. It took super long time for all of our food to come out. Appetizers came over 40 minutes after ordering and the mains came over an hour and 15 mins or so after we arrived, and that was with the mains being ordered halfway through the apps. The first bite of the oyster was ok. It didn't taste like it was just made but maybe pre-prepped perhaps. We were supposed to receive bread soon after the first bite but we didn't. It was difficult to flag someone down because the waitstaff was moving fast and bringing out food for all the tables. We received our appetizers and then I had to let them know that we didn't get bread. So our bread and appetizers were eaten together. Now onto the food. We ordered the shrimp, jollof ball, calamari, and tacos. The calamari was straight up not good. We didn't finish it and no one in our party thought it tasted fresh. It had a very odd texture. It wasn't chewy or have a bite like normal calamari does but it was like a sponge. We all took one piece. Our party is all about not wasting food but the fact that the appetizer was not finished was very telling. The shrimp had good flavor but wasn't spectacular. The tacos were good. The jollof ball was spicy and nice. Between the appetizer and the entree there was over 35 minute gap. For this reason, we asked if we could have more bread, but they said they charged for extra bread. Tbh, I don't mind if places charge little for bread service, but if it takes over 35 minutes for the entree to come out, I'd expect the restaurant to give another piece of bread per person for no fee. That's just good customer service but alas we declined the bread. For the mains we ordered the brai (10) up charge, the lamb chops, the ribeye, and pork chop. The ribeye was great, cooked well, juicy and with good flavor. Lamb chops were also nice. The pork had an interesting flavor that my party member wasn't fond of, but it was cooked nicely and was reasonably juicy. The big miss was the brai. It had a 10 dollar upcharge for 1 row of lateral axis short rib, 1 lamb chops, and 1 sausage. The short rib was fine but a crap ton of fat. The lamb chop was good, the sausage was raw in the middle. When I brought it up to someone that the sausage was raw, they took the same sausage and cooked it until it was done. Keep in mind the restaurant is dark and my other companions had some of the sausage but the outer pieces. I had a piece in my mouth and had to spit it out because I could feel the raw meat sausage texture in my mouth. Instead of bringing me a new sausage they took the same one, which to me is outrageous especially because I had spit out a good piece. The waitress apologized but I had to ask to speak to the manager instead of someone coming to our table first. When they brought the same sausage out, it rolled off the plate onto the table....i just accepted it. They took off the 10 dollar up charge off the bill but I don't think that was enough especially with the whole debacle of the sausage being raw. I expected the restaurant to have a solution but I was put on the spot about what they needed to do. I wished I'd asked for the 1 meal to be half off or more than 10 dollars off just because of everything and the food quality and the terrible wait times. The mashed potatoes also weren't great. I was really excited to try Astor's Table for Houston Restaurant Weeks, especially their Sunday brunch, and had been looking forward to bringing my family. I considered making a reservation online, but it required a credit card to be placed on file. Since the website was showing plenty of availability throughout the morning, we decided to take our chances and walk in instead. When we arrived, the ladies at the door asked if we had a reservation. We explained that we didn't and that we had planned to walk in because the website was showing plenty of availability. We were then told that they were no longer taking reservations and that they had no tables available. I was honestly surprised and disappointed, especially because the online reservation system was still showing multiple available times. If walk-ins were not being accepted or reservations were required, that should have been communicated clearly. It would have saved us the trip and the disappointment of arriving with our family only to be turned away. I completely understand that restaurants can have policies regarding reservations and capacity, but the conflicting information between what was available online and what we were told at the door was frustrating. We were genuinely excited to try Astor's Table because of Houston Restaurant Weeks, so unfortunately, this experience left a disappointing first impression. read more

I love the decor but it was really cold inside. We came here to try the HRW menu. Upon entering we were seated and the waitress introduced herself. I believe her name was Sandy. Sandy was welcoming and did a great job throughout. To address the 4 star, part of the knock on the star comes from little things throughout the night. First, we waited quite a bit to be served. To no fault of our waitress it looked like she had been pulled to handle other things. The hostess ended up taking our order for sandy and then she took it from there. Also, another waitress Jada stepped in as well to help and made sure we were good. This was very nice of them. Again, our waitress was not a problem, but logistically if she had tables you could see her physically having to handle other things so its not like she just went missing. The restaurant has a great vibe. There was a pianist playing and the lights were intimately low. The chef also came over and introduced himself which is pretty cool. On to the food: The oyster Rockefeller first course was delicious. Creamy, spinach, oyster with a bit of a zing from the sauce Next we had the heritage tasting plate and the oxtail tacos. The oxtail tacos had a bit too much lettuce for my liking but my fiancee enjoyed it. Savory, hers didnt have as much lettuce as mine, so if youre not a lettuce fan you could he rolling the dice here. The heritage tasting plate was good. Camel, kangaroo, and rabbit. I loved the kangaroo a ton. Who knew? The camel was very good too it had a ground turkey type if texture. The kangaroo tasted like stewed beef roast. Very good. Finally, the rabbit, as I've had this before, was good rabbit. Its like a chicken ish flavor to it. For the next course we had the lamb chops and suya ribeye. The lamb chops were flavorful and the green beans on both dishes were good and tender. The suya ribeye had good suya flavor. We barely touched the mashed potatoes and jollof because we were so full. The bite of jollof that I did have was traditional flavored jollof. Pretty good. We got the peri peri shrimp with the lamb chops and they were ok, but not anything to write home about. We were expecting that peri peri burst of flavor like the lamb chops had. To finish off the meal we both got the creme brulee. Id say this missed a bit. The brulee didnt have your traditional hard top of bruleed sugar. The sugary portion tasted a bit burnt. Not the traditional brulee burnt but a stronger burnt sugar flavor. All in all a great experience and we would go back and do this again. read more

I have been here before for brunch and not sure why I never posted a review...therefore Houston resturant week was prime time to try it again! I made reservations same day. I showed up, parked, was greeted and sat immediately. It was a nice intimate atmosphere. They had the young man playing the piano for a vibe. It was a little dark which made it a little hard to see. It was really busy due to resturant week so we knew patience would be necessary. We did sit about 10-15 minutes before we were helped but understood. Then Jayda came over and took care of us. She gave recommendations and knew her stuff. I had the shrimp that were good and the steak and potatoes were good. I tasted the fried fish and it was awesome. I also liked the bread and sauce that came to the table. The lemon drop was pretty strong too. I enjoyed it. I would like to try it again when not so busy. So...on this day we decided at 7pm that we would get a little dressed and go out. We made reservations for 9:45pm. They asked if we had reservations but never asked for a name but...so be it! We were sitting maybe 10 min before a waiter came over and said she would take care of us. She stated they would serve bread and an appetizer curated by the chef but neither ever hit the table. We had the calamari (ran out of the sauce) and ox tails tacos, amazing by the way. For our main course we had the lamb chops and suya prime ribeye, also amazing! We were checked on a lot of times which I appreciated but did want to enjoy the entire experience. I also had a prickly pear margarita that happened to be my second choice because they ran out of the grapefruit juice but it was still great! I visited Astor's Table with some coworkers. Everything was amazing! It was such a great experience. We were greeted by a friendly waiter who held the door and welcomed us "home". We were seated and given a tour of the menu and some suggested options to try. Once the order was placed and the appetizers arrived, the chef came out, introduced himself and spoke to us what we liked best and answered questions about each item. He also came out after the mains were served to make sure everything was being enjoyed. We ordered a few sampler platters for appetizers, as well as oxtail, antelope and ostrich for the mains as we wanted to get a taste of everything. There was nothing that didn't taste amazing! This was the first time we tried camel, kangaroo, antelope and ostrich. We were surprised at how flavorful each of them and the other items were. Love the feel of the restaurant. It has a welcoming "small dining" or "family cafe" feel. The decor and feng shui of the restaurant is fitting for dining for families, just the friends or date day. The food is delicious! It says farm to table in the name and you can tell that it's fresh. There is a wait for the food but it's because they cook to order. This is not a place where you come to get your food fast. Waiting comes with great and fresh food. I had the oxtail breakfast and my husband had the fish and grits breakfast. Because we don't eat pork, we don't have the grits because they use bacon drippings in their grits. The menu has something for everyone: pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan and meat eaters. Today's service was a little slow with drink refills and condiments we needed but the server did tell us they were not only cooking for the restaurant but also a big event that was being catered off the premises. They also have a space that seems like it can be reserved for private or large party dining. I definitely will be back!! read more

The service was excellent. The chef/owner came out and shook our hands and welcomed us home. That was a great touch. There is such a variety on their menu that it's hard to decide what to order. That includes their appetizers. We wish we lived closer so we could come back and try more dishes. Anyhow, we had the chicken empanada and the beef empanada as an appetizer. We got one of each that we split between myself and my husband. We could have ordered two each but we weren't sure of the size at the time. We ordered them to be baked rather than fried. They were delicious along with the chimichurri sauce. We preferred the beef, but the chicken was excellent too. We ordered the beef kebabs, which has a name on their menu that I can't remember at the moment along with their sweet yellow rice and veggies. What a presentation! You have to go look at the pictures. The kebab was hanging over the dish and we would slide off a chunk at a time as we ate. The yellow rice was slightly sweet and had raisins. My husband is a fussy eater, but he loved the rice! The meat was tender and cooked to perfection. We had to try the desserts because how often can you order the South African Trio of Desserts in a restaurant? The Milk Tart was slightly sweet and pleasant. The pudding (can't quite remember the name of it) was hard. They were out of the peppermint crisp so they offered us to sample a new Keylime pie they had. That was delicious! Table for 2 and our baby for Mother's Day Brunch. $42 per person for a 3 course brunch, sign us up! $55 for premium experience, even better! But wait, there's more....... This is where they get you. It was all a lie. A very deceiving menu written in a way where you think you're going to get oxtails and jollof rice plus appetizer and dessert for $55 per person. Because that's a great price, not really a deal, just a great price. WRONG. Santiago had to clarify that it was $55 EXTRA ON TOP OF $42 PER PERSON. SO $97 PER PERSON FOR OXTAILS AND JOLLOF RICE, AN APP & DESSERT. RIDICULOUS! TOTALLY DISHONEST AND DECEIVING. Write it as $55 additional per person, so everyone knows what they're getting into before they reserve their table. Because Santiago admitted everyone he served that day was shocked at the additional cost. Not wanting to ruin my wife's FIRST Mother's Day, I brushed it off and still continued with the order. Appetizer: tequeño & empanada. Bland, came out cold and after our entrees came out. Entrees: Oxtail & Jollof rice. I loved it. Flavor was great. Just wish there was a lot more. For $97, you expect to have 6-8 large oxtails and a side of rice. What i got was 4 very tiny oxtails and a full plate of rice!! Peri peri chicken & jollof rice- flavor was nice and smoky. But again, for $97, you expect more than 2 avg size leg quarters and a full plate of rice. Dessert: They were out of key lime pie by noon. I saw the cheesecake, it was a thin plain slice, so we opted for their seis leches cake. It was not good. It was not soaked enough, very dry. The reason the score wasn't lower was because service was great, the entrees tasted great and they gave each mother a single rose and Mother's Day card which had a pin in it that said best mom ever. Which made my wife's day even that much better. Thank you Chef Casey. After spending over $325, I can confidently say I will not be patronizing this establishment again. To start, we were not given a purse rack and had to ask for one. Not a huge issue on its own, as oversights happen. However, the biggest insult came from the owner. Years ago, around 2018, I frequented this restaurant often and even had several long conversations with him. During this visit, he greeted every surrounding table except ours -- six tables in total -- and very intentionally avoided acknowledging us altogether. What made it even more disappointing was that this happened on Mother's Day. Roses and cards were being handed out to mothers dining there, yet neither my mother nor I were acknowledged, despite us both being mothers. To add to the experience, when it came time to pack our food, we weren't even offered bags. Individually, these things may seem minor, but together they painted a very clear picture. I've noticed this shift in treatment during my last few visits, but this experience confirmed that I will officially write this place off. The food is okay -- neither terrible nor exceptional -- but even if it were truly five-star quality, I still wouldn't return. read more

Even though it is so hot during the summer, it felt breezy under the patio and it was so nice to get fresh air. We ordered the african spicy fried chicken empanadas and one beef fried empanada. I can't believe I have not left my review. This is the longest houston restaurant week menu I've ever seen! This place was packed to the max, the food presentation was amazing. I really love that one of the menu features which is an around the world theme, is presented with those country flags. I never seen anything like that before. Wasn't something that I ordered on this visit, but it definitely inspired me to return and explore the menu much more. Chef Casey is the BEST TO EVER DO IT. I admire his charismatic personality he makes time even when he's the most busy, this man makes time to introduce himself and greet each table. I never seen or felt so seen and valued, on going to a place on a whim. This makes me want to bring my entire family. Dining here feels like you're visiting your uncles home. It really feels like home. Oh yeah, and your girl STILL NEEDED SOME MILK with that heat that was delivered from that jollaf rice and fish I ordered. My table guest had the ox tails. I chose this location for the day of my birthday...and I am so glad that I did. My first time experience was so fun, light, and welcoming. Parking was a breeze as they have a lot with ample parking. No valet needed!!! Yay!!! They have an indoor, outdoor and covered outdoor seating options. The DJ arrived and provided a music playlist that was catered to his audience. I noticed other patrons from various ethnic backgrounds which is always a good sign and plus! A lot of families and single couples were enjoying brunch time. The owner/chef came around to make sure everyone was doing great....he obliged me with a birthday tres leche piece of cake! My friend wanted a place that had multi brunch options, and chose this place. We both came here for the first time on a Saturday AM. The reviews looked pretty solid, so I was sold. We made a resy for 10:45am, but upon arrival, we really didn't need one. Place was quiet at that time. But my the time we left, the crowd came. I like the easy decor with black art on the walls, wine rack display, and nice indoor outdoor seating. Food- was solid. I had the Spicy chicken empanada, and 2 pancakes. My friend ordered the Shrimp and grits and this was great. She gave me a good portion to try, and I would definitely order this next time. She also got a biscuit on the side. She had to ask a few times for butter and jelly, but she eventually go it. Service - was pretty solid. I love that Chef Casey came out to the floor, and greeted each guest. Braised short ribs were seasoned well but certainly not braised. Please read the meaning of braised, they should be tender enough to be eaten just using a fork. My friend who ordered salmon after asking to make sure it will be medium rare was given a salmon that was so overcooked it was bone dry! The server Jada was excellent but the food was not worth going back for. The worst part was I was lied to when I called the restaurant for a reservation before going in, was told there are no reservations but I can come in and will be accommodated. Yesterday, my husband and I visited Astor's Table for the first time. We decided to try it based on the yelp reviews and extensive menu options. Ambiance: So the ambiance... is interesting. It's giving like "upscale, wine / piano bar" but at the same time "comfy & established Mom and Pop." That's the best way I can describe it. It's not a bad vibe but the decor does clash a little. You can tell that with the prices, black table cloths & cloth napkins the aspiration is fine dining but the decor and setup just slightly clash with that. Based on the reviews I just didn't gather that. Experience: We were promptly greeted by a hostess and sat down for lunch. Our server Jade was very friendly and knowledgeable. The Chef also came out & asked if we had any questions and made recommendations. (It was during lunch so there were only a few tables seated.) **Food: We ultimately ordered the oxtails, one with jollof rice and sweet plantains & the other with mac & cheese, (around $35 each.) Our meal was hot, fresh, and quick. I'm not a huge fan of oxtails, but my husband said this was his second favorite oxtails EVER. They were extremely tender, falling off the bone, well seasoned, great portion size, and the Mac n cheese was delicious. It wasn't baked and it wasn't extremely cheesy, which I loved & still very flavorful. 9/10. The only two things that we didn't like was that our water was served without ice and the jollof Rice just wasn't what we were used to. It was flavorful, spicy, and seasoned, but I don't know what kind of rice it was. It seemed to be some other sort of grain that was smaller and a little harder but it wasn't bad. It is a South African restaurant and I've never had South African Jollof Rice but it just wasn't our favorite. 7/10 on the rice. 9/10 on the sweet plantains & oxtails. Other than that, they have a very extensive menu, a beautiful outdoor patio for seating, the staff was very nice and the restaurant seemed to be very clean. They offer a full bar with a great mimosa deal and the Chef seems very involved. Closing Remarks: While I believe these other reviews are their honest experience, you can tell that the chef is extremely involved in his business. Meaning, if you have any issues, he seems extremely willing to accommodate. If we would've asked for ice, he would've given us ice. You can tell that he wants his business to thrive & to provide great service. I don't get that from many restaurants these days. We came here for HRW and it did not disappoint. There were 3 of us and we ordered different things so we had a variety of plates. The flavor of the beef empanada was probably one of the best I've had. My favorite entree was the Picanha plate. The beef was perfectly tender and flavorful however my cousin and sister swear the lamp chops were the star, there was no gamey flavor or aftertaste. It was clean, well cooked, and seasoned. We had a fantastic dinner here during Houston Restaurant Week. The atmosphere was incredible, with live music, South African-themed decor, and a dog-friendly outdoor patio. We were pleasantly offered a choice of still or sparkling water, and the extensive wine list was impressive. Our server, Jada, provided excellent service, and it was a nice touch when Chef Casy visited our table; he seemed genuinely proud of the restaurant's offerings. We loved the South African mini bunny chow, which was a spicy beef curry in a unique hot dog-shaped bread, and the global veg platter, which featured a wonderfully textured arepa and empanada with a great dip. For our mains, the South African gugulethu espetada filet medallions and the flavorful, albeit slightly fatty, suya grilled beef were both standout dishes. The desserts were okay but could have been better; the seis leches was densely packed with milky sweetness, but the crème brûlée's sugar top wasn't as crispy as I would have liked. Decided to try South African Cuisine with a friend visiting TX and this place came up highly rated so we gave it a shot! First off the menu is EXTENSIVE so you might be needing to study a bit before you get there just to see what kind of vibe you're feeling! Which can backfire right, with so many options I was questioning just how good the quality would be but i was just tripping cause it would not disappoint. I went with a chicken and waffles combination (I know how could I with so many other options but hey when the crave calls it calls) and it was kickin, I mean it had a good heat to it and everything including the potatoes were very tasty! Friend went with a Mac & cheese oxtail and she raved it was delicious. We also split a table mountain sampler which came with a range of cured meats and other items specifically South African. Lemme say this was definitely the highlight of the meal to me. My friend and I are team peppadews cause them little guys were SO GOOD. Service was also amazing, we had a great waiter who was so patient with us and answered any questions we had! Now the only "downside" if you want to call it that is it's a little pricey. With the food quality and vast options available i understand why. I think if there's a time you want to spiff up the weekend brunch/lunch/dinner plans with the group or treat your partner to somewhere nice or even just try South African food this could be a great move! read more

Had such a lovely time at this South African spot! We went for Houston restaurant week. I've always wanted to try jollof rice and fufu. Didn't get to try the fufu this time, but the beef gugulethu was amazing. It was definitely our favorite! The jollof was super spicy (the waitress even warned me!) and it was a bit much for me, but I wanted to try it. The chef came out to say hi, which was such a nice touch. For dessert, we had cheesecake and key lime pie. We were too full to eat them there, but they were just as delicious the next day! Can't wait to go back and try more. read more

For my Houston friends: Last night we went to Astor's Table off of Mason Road. Phenomenal South African food with Latin specialties. Chef Casey came out and talked to us about his menu and made us feel special. He focuses on great food and a great experience - he exceeded our expectations! I had the beef empanadas and the ham and cheese empanada, which was beautifully crisp and juicy. My husband had the lobster soup which was so rich and full of lobster. Our table had the Peri Peri shrimp and my dish was one of my favorites, oxtail stew. My husband's baked Seabass was done to Perfection. I'm going back for the lamb chops, curry and Argentinian Churrasco steak! Your experience will be like having a meal at someone's home, a good friend who loves to cook for his family. On Friday and Saturday night, he has a singer that plays great ballads. Please go and support our small business restaurants that are a hidden gem in our community. I really enjoy the "feel" of Astors table. It's a very intimate piano lounge vibe type of restaurant. Came here with some friends and we were seated pretty quickly. The waiter attending to us was pretty amazing and explained and recommended a lot of the things on the menu to us! The menu is pretty extensive and it's actually quite impressive! Everything I ate was pretty good and tasty and felt fresh and freshly cooked. I'd love to come back for brunch to try it out! read more
