They quickly got me an appointment when I called the Friday prior; they fit me into the schedule easily for that Saturday and as soon as I walked in, I felt welcome. They were personable, made me feel at home, and even recommended some tasty restaurants in the area! I've been to Textures a couple times and every time I was very happy with the way my hair turned out. The stylists are very nice and professional. They do mostly curly hair and did a good job with my wavy/curly hair. after visiting, my hair feels a lot softer and healthier. Covid wise, I think they did okay with handling, they seem to frequently sanitize and always wear a mask. one tip: sometimes they will run a little late so allocate an extra fifteen minutes after your appointment. read more

I was a walk in client and they fit me in right away. I was only there for a wash. Priscilla is a rockstar! Seriously. She used the shampoo twice (I needed it, I had hurt my hand and hadn't been able to really wash my hair well for a bit). She then conditioned me with a regular conditioner, an under the dryer conditioner, protected my locs and dried them under the drier. Lastly, she oiled my scalp. Was it more than a quick wash and dry on the price list? Yes. But she gave me a new quote after getting to see how much more work my hair really is since it was dirty, dry, thick, and long. Just left the salon with my girls. Sandi-Kaye did an EXCEPTIONAL job on their hair. Strangers in the salon, who were also getting their hair done, were complimenting my girls on how amazing they looked. Both my girls are natural. Their hair is thick and the older they get the more challenging it is for me to manage it. Thank goodness I stumbled across Textures and Sandi-Kaye! Sandi-Kaye arrived on time and went right to work. The only waiting I had to do was for their deep conditioning lol. I found the price to be fair. When dealing with hair you definitely get what you pay for, and the results were well worth the cost. My goal for my girls' hair is that it be healthy. I don't care about length or the most current styles lol. I want their hair to be healthy. More importantly, I want them to understand what it takes to maintain a healthy head of hair. This is where Sandi-Kaye went above and beyond. After their appointments, she took time to consult with me on how to manage their hair between visits. She didn't sugar-coat anything... she just gave me the quick and hard facts. My daughter went to this shop for a haircut ONLY upon agreement of 40$ by this girl named Patricia. Once she got there she confirmed haircut only and 40$. My daughter asked her to spray her hair so that it would be easier for this girl to comb it because she was pulling and raking her hair. She saw that as an opportunity to make more money by taking it upon herself to shampoo her hair without asking if she wanted it shampooed. My daughter told her she was tender headed, she assumed my daughter was hit in the head and that's why she was tender headed. My daughter has naturally beautiful curly hair and she keeps it very clean and brushed. This broad did not want to touch her hair and made her feel like it was dirty and kept saying it was tangled, as if she didn't take care of it, her naturally curly hair does not require much to maintain. She had a very nasty disposition and her attitude was the worst. As a result my daughter was caught off guard and unaware of a charge of 70$ on top of her nasty attitude. I spoke with her myself. I would not recommend her for no one's hair. read more

SINGING "AT LAST".....I finally found a beautician in the Montgomery County area that knows how to master natural hair care. First off I love my color! I'm giving the Fall leaves inspiration right now thanks to my stylist Sandi-Kaye, she is the absolute best! This salon does an excellent job! Everytime I leave my hair looks exactly as I hoped. Unfortunately, appt times are more of an estimate than exact. This last visit my appt was at noon and I didn't get into the chair until 1:10. So don't go if you're on a time crunch because you'll just stress yourself out! I'm sure all the stylists are great but Ms Carol is my go-to. Heads up, you can pay with card but can only tip with cash. read more

I feel bad about writing this review and almost didn't write it because I have liked Textures in the past for relaxed styles, but I had a really bad experience that I would have appreciated hearing before I made my last appointment. I have had natural hair for 2 years. I decided that I wanted to start locking my hair. making an appointment was easy. I did not choose a specific stylist. The problems started when I arrived at the appointment. I was on time, but sat waiting at least 20 min until my stylist finished working on someone else's head. I was directed to sit in one of the chairs where you get your hair washed, where I waited some more. When my stylist finally finished, she came up to me and takes of my hat and starts un-plaiting my hair. No words. No introduction. This was very awkward to me so I initiated conversation. The woman very was nice, but I still felt uncomfortable with the lack of introduction. At this point I will take responsibility of myself and say when those red flags started appearing, I should have left. But I did not. She finished washing my hair and took me to a seat. She then started parting my hair and using locking gel, started the locs. Now this is what really freaked me out! How do you put started locs on someones head without first asking them what size and style they want??? That is ridiculous to me!! I stopped her and asked her, are you starting the locs?? She said yes. I said well can I show you what I want first?? She kindly said yes. So I showed her pictures from my phone. Again, at this point i should have walked out, but against my better judgment I did not. After seeing the pictures she then continued, using locking gel mind you. I learned later that the brand of gel she used is disaster waiting to happen. Gels can attract dirt, they can flake leaving the locs dirty, and they can dry the hair and scalp. All of these things happened to me in time. When she finished, she put petrolatum based grease on my scalp and sprayed my head with hair spray. I never use these products on my own head, so I was cringing. I did not make a follow up appointment there, but made one at a different salon in Silver Spring that uses only natural products and specializes only in natural hair. Talk about night and day! The silver spring stylist had to redo nearly all of my parts because they seemed to be randomly sized, which I had also noticed myself. She scrubbed all the gel out of my head as it had left my scalp dry and my hair flaky. Even the look of the new parts were superior. It was just an overall better experience. I would never recommend Textures for starting locs. In hindsight I take responsibility for not stopping the stylist at multiple stages in the experience, but as someone new to locs I trusted her professional opinion. Now I know better. read more

The staff at Textures is really nice but not good to my natural hair. I am natural and have been natural for 4 years. I had 2 bad experiences. The first trip to Textures I went for a full head, permanent color. The color turned out great but the straightening of my hair left it dry and brittle and my ends split horribly. I returned to get my color touched up without the straightening and it turned out horribly wrong. They did not use the color I specifically told them I used on my previous visit, my honey blonde hair turned out orange. Very disappointed. I informed the technician I had a wedding to attended as maid of honor and I really needed my hair to look nice. It did not. I have orange hair in my best friends wedding pictures. The most frustrating part is I told them exactly what color I used previously and they chose not to use it. They over charged me for my services and when I called to tell them what happened they never returned my call. I would only recommend this shop for ladies with relaxed hair. I have seen great styles while there getting my service but only on those with relaxed hair. IF YOU ARE A NATURALISTA DO NOT GO TO TEXTURES! I had been to this salon before and had a pretty good experience with SandiKaye she was knowledgable and very patient with me. I looked forward to her being my regular hairstylist, its hard finding a place that specializes in natural hair and locs near germantown. My experience today though was a complete turn off. I had an appointment with SandiKaye at 4:30 but when I got there she was not there, it was only when I asked was I told that she was sick and since I had never been there before they did not have a number for me to let me know (i had been there at least once and i provided my number when i made this appointment). Another young lady was going to take care of me but I got discouraged by her disposition. I am particular about my natural hair and was looking to cut my locs after 6 years and wanted a nice straight style (no chemical), short cut (faded) possible color and extensions (if necessary). While I was explaining what I wanted the stylist was telling me I would not be able to do much and the style would not look as nice with my natural hair. Despite me telling her that i know my hair would be short I just wanted a nice cut and straight style with my natural hair. I was expecting some creativity especially since i showed a couple of pics of straight natural hairstyles. I really got the impression that the stylist did not feel like doing my hair, did not want to deal with my natural hair, or preferred to work with permed hair. After the brief interaction i decided it would be best if i rescheduled/went somewhere else. When I left I thought maybe I could do a faded bob cut with my locs. I went back and tried my hand, the same stylist said she could cut and style but not retwist my locs then said she does not do anything with dreads. My disappointment comes from the disposition of the stylists in what should be a professional place. Also, there did not seem to be any regard for my natural hair. I feel like if I would have come in for a perm it would have been better received. I decided to reschedule my appointment with SandiKaye b/c she seems to be pretty good. read more

This is a fabulous salon for women of color. They specialize in natural and relaxed styles. Great atmosphere. Friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff. This is the only place I bring my daughter to have her hair cut and styled. read more

I have been going on and off to Textures since they were on contour rd, and used Carole as my stylist. Although I was never very enthused about the styling, it is more convenient than driving to DC or my former stylist in Laurel and I can always re-style it myself. This year I told myself I would commit to a year of professional service and even had her scheduling regular appointments. On previous services I would tip anywhere from $5-$10, and even tip the woman that washed my hair in addition to Carole. My last two appointments I did not tip her because I didn't have any cash on me and was paying by credit card (their current receipt slip does not have a place to write a tip like other service places) and I knew I was going to use her services for the year until I became more settled in the neighborhood and could find a better stylist. She actually had the nerve to, what she may have thought was under her breath, say "cheapie" directing this comment towards me (as there was no one else around the payment counter and the music playing in the background had no reference to it). I was really disappointed in her behavior and will definitely not be back and would (and will) discourage others from going to this salon if that's how they want to treat paying customers. Whether she was upset or not about not receiving a tip from me was her business and should not have been spoken. She's lost out on $150 every six weeks (yeah that's right for a touch up relaxer and partial color - not even my whole head) for being so rude and unprofessional. All that negativity, not because I wouldn't pay for services rendered, but because I didn't have cash on hand to tip. This is definitely not the way to treat paying customers, and if Carole feels so passionate about tips you should remove the credit card option from your facility or get a printout that has a line for tipping. Either way it no longer matters to me as I'd sooner go bald before I would go back to this salon. read more

The people are nice, but I hate going to a salon that has a large black clientele, and significantly charges more for natural hair. It the equivalent of telling your black clients " I need to be paid extra to deal with your nappy hair." I didn't ask for curly hair, however I'm not going to chemically alter it to save a few dollars or make your job easier. read more

I started going to textures in 2007 and I finally stopped going in 2010. I couldn't take it anymore. The owner Pat was my stylist and she was not good to my hair. She over charged me most time since she knew I had money. She did not wash my hair good. Many times I still had an itchy flaky scalp within days of her doing my hair because it was not washed thoroughly. When she curled my hair she did the style of her choice. Which mostly was a bump like a grandmas hairstyle until I would ask her for more curls. She was lazy and wanted to do my hair quick to get me in and out. She did not nurture my hair. The last time I went there she over processed my hair by leaving the relaxer too long in my hair. The next day my hair was flat very dry and brittle and scabs on my scalp. I will never go there again. She was an acquaintance from high school. I was really sad and disappointed that she conducted business this way. I used to travel from silver spring to Gaithersburg faithfully every two weeks to get my hairdone. Now I have a stylist that is in silver spring and she is professional and she does a great job in styling and taking care of my hair. The difference is unbelievable. I would not recommend Textures to anyone. read more

It's always been extremely hard to find a great stylist for African-American hair in Montgomery County. In a purely spontaneous moment, I walked into Textures Hair Salon almost 4 yrs ago to give them a try and it was the best decision I could have ever made for my hair. My stylist, Sandi-Kaye, is AWESOME!!! I have complete trust in her decisions for my hair and I have yet to be disappointed. I tell her what I want and she gives me that and more.
