I have short hair, so I went in for a quick check to make sure they could braid my hair - they let me know they could do it. When my appointment came up, ( I went early on a Sunday) I did not have to wait to have my service completed. They made great time and asked questions before hand to make sure they had a clear picture of what I wanted. My hair looks exactly like the picture I wanted. I really wanted to love this place because my first experience was great. About 2-3 weeks ago, I came to Sylvia's Hair Braiding for the first time, and everything went smoothly. Online booking was easy, and I was in and out in about 2.5 hours. I was so impressed by how efficient they were that I decided to bring my children here as well. Unfortunately, my second experience was completely different. I booked my children's appointments the day before the 4th of July and had even called two days prior because I needed help with the online booking. The employee I spoke with assisted me but never mentioned that they would only be accepting walk-ins. When we arrived for our scheduled appointment, we were greeted at the door and told they were only taking walk-ins. The salon was already packed. I explained that I had called ahead and was never informed of this change, but no one apologized, acknowledged the inconvenience, or attempted to offer any accommodation. The owner was there, sitting at the first chair in pink, braiding a client's hair the entire time, and never even spoke up or acknowledged the situation. After being told they were only accepting walk-ins, they took down the hairstyles my children wanted, discussed pricing with me, and agreed to call me when they were ready since I explained that I live nearby. Nearly two hours later, I received a call asking me to bring one of my children in. I returned immediately after. Once there, I was told it would be "10 minutes or less" before he would be in a chair. Instead, we waited for an hour before my son was finally called back. While I'm glad he was eventually seen, the wait was far longer than what we were told, and no one ever acknowledged the delay or apologized for yet another inconvenience. I will say there was one kind gesture during the entire experience. One of the braiders noticed I had been standing the whole time and offered me her seat. I declined because she needed it as well. I genuinely appreciated her thoughtfulness, and it stood out because it was the only act of kindness we experienced throughout this ordeal. What has been most disappointing is how I was treated throughout this entire experience. Instead of empathy or even a simple apology, I felt like I was being met with rude looks and dismissive. Whether that was their intent or not, that was the impression it left. As a paying customer whose scheduled appointment wasn't honored, I believe I had every right to be frustrated. At no point was I disrespectful or rude; I simply wanted clear communication and the courtesy I believe every customer deserves. Good customer service isn't just about doing great hair--it's about how you treat people when something goes wrong. A simple apology, honest communication, and realistic expectations beforehand would have gone a long way. I understand that mistakes happen, but the complete lack of accountability and professionalism is what was most disappointing. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at Sylvia's Hair Braiding in Germantown. I was assigned only one braider, which significantly increased the time it took to finish my hair. Unfortunately, the bigger issue started after I left--the braids immediately began coming loose. I returned to the shop to explain the situation. She offered to put the hair back in but how? The hair continued to come out for several days--everywhere (my car, bathroom floor, living room, etc.). The most frustrating part was attending an event and feeling embarrassed, constantly checking the floor to make sure I wasn't leaving a trail of hair behind me. Overall, this was a very frustrating experience, especially for a paid service. I won't be returning. Now, I have to take this down after only a week and have it redone. I was very disappointed to WAIT FOR AN HOUR WITH AN APPOINTMENT and a paid appointment. No one said anything to me. When I asked the owner when someone would get started on my hair, she said they were short staffed and called a braider to see when she would arrived. The woman didn't answer the phone. I asked again when someone would start on my hair. I was told that someone would start on another woman's hair first. I had an appointment and have been going there for four years. I asked more my deposit back and went to Nadine's because I was leaving town the next day. All they had to do was communicate with me. I won't be going back. I hate to have to find another place to get my hair done. But the lack of customer service after four years of investing my dollars is inexcusable. read more

I made an appointment on Wednesday even talked to a lady there to guide me and help me make the appointment. When i get there so many people are in the chairs and they said even though I made a appointment and payed a deposit they were only taking walk-ins and which was not communicated with me before I arrived so I had to wait almost 2 hours to get my hair done and still had me sitting wating inside for another hour and the braiding was ok there were so flaws but it was ok. People always say there aren't any good braiders in the area, but that's just not true--Sylvia's Hair proves them wrong. I started going to Sylvia's last year after getting tired of the long wait times and poor treatment I experienced at another salon. The owner at my old spot didn't treat her staff well, and it created a negative vibe. Sylvia is completely different. She's kind, professional, and even steps in to help with braiding herself. The entire team is warm and friendly, and they work together like a well-oiled machine. You're not stuck sitting there all day because they have a great routine--everyone helps each other and keeps things moving. My braids always come out amazing. Hair salon sucks I've went before she even had a salon employee are lazy and they cheat you out your money with the length. What ever you do don't go to the lightskin lady very havey handed and lord forbid you have fine hair that will mess your hair up. I had an appt at Sylvia's recently. Once I was seated, approximately 15 or so minutes later, the older lady who would be starting my hair asked which colors I wanted. I told her I wanted a mix of three colors and shared which ones. She goes back to get it and gets the wrong colors three times. She finally comes out with the right colors, but two of the three were together in one pack as an ombré. I had a doctors appt at 3 and a vacation coming up so I told her it was fine. This lady was really rough with my natural hair. There was no care with the brushing or combing, and she used a blow dryer for areas that were reverting without any protectants. Two younger girls ended up taking over my hair and were more pleasant, and I was happy with their work aside from my middle part being slightly off. They were nice and I could tell that they were having a long day so I paid, tipped and left. My total was 280 and I tipped 18%. A couple of days after this appointment, I noticed tension bumps forming in the back of my head. I reached out on IG and asked if I could return after my vacation to redo the back. I was given a day to come in, but when I asked who I was speaking to to confirm and reference so I am not showing up blindly, I did not receive a response. Growing frustrated with how it was being handled, and the bumps still being present on the back of my head, I decided that it was best to not let any one from this shop touch my hair and request a partial refund. I was denied and told that I can get $20 off of a future style instead. I thought that I found a closer shop home but it's safe to say that I will not be back and I hope that others strongly consider giving this place your business. I also feel as though I need to mention that there is another review on google for this shop from a lady named Courtney Byrnes. While I wasn't present during her whole appointment, I was there for the end of it and did see her voice her concerns to the owner. The owner's response here and account of events, particularly points 4 and 5, are not entirely accurate. The person sitting next to her agreed on the weird smell of her hair. read more

Time management is a big issue. The first time I went there loved my boho knotless braids however, didn't get into the chair until 2 hours after my appointment. The second time was atleast 45 minutes. Both times I saw various women waiting and when they got in the chair had looked to be annoyed, rightfully so. I know they advertise getting you out in a short amount of time but I never experienced that. I thought the first time was a one time situation. I can say I gave them a chance and they are nice people but the time is a huge inconvenience. Also pricing on their site should be more transparent. Both times there factors that caused the style to be more than expected, when it could have been upfront. I rather go further and know what I'm getting and know I won't be there all day. read more

Never again! My sister and I called the day before to be sure the salon could do smedium boho waist length Knotless braids. We were told yes. We then asked how early we could walk in and was told 6am on Thursday. She drove two hours and I drove one hour and arrived at 5:45 and after waiting til after 6am when no one was there I called the salon number. Whomever answered sounded asleep when they answered and asked what we wanted to get and then said someone would come and open the salon. The lady that came was nasty and seemed annoyed by us being there. She then proceeded to ask what we were getting and we told her again smedium waist length boho Knotless braids. She then told us that we couldn't get that and would have to choose small or medium. We told her we called and confirmed it was ok before we came and she started speaking French and got on the phone. After a lot of back and forth and me having to explain to whomever was on the phone what the issue was, they said ok and started our hair. The lady who braided my hair seemed to be annoyed with me and had a very heavy hand and was rough. I called her several times not to be so rough as my scalp was feeling sensitive from all the rough combing and pulling hard to braid my hair. After a few hours another woman comes and starts braiding the back of my head with the First Lady still working on the side of my head. This lady was even more rough and was using too small of a comb. I could hear and feel her ripping my hair out with the very fine tooth comb she was using. I asked her several times to switch to a smaller comb to which she acted like she didn't hear me talking to her. I also asked the other lady to stop cutting the stray hairs at the tops of the braids because that was my hair. She ignored me. I also got human hair in my braids for the boho look and the bundle they used smells horrible. It was a mix between fish and corn chips and when I asked about it they said they didn't smell it. After six hours my hair was finally done and my scalp is on Fire. They asked how I wanted to pay and I asked them about the hair and the way it smelled. She said human hair smells like that. I proceeded to say I've never had human hair I bought smell like that and she tried to tell me otherwise. The lady who braided the back of my hair proceeded to laugh and say "maybe you didn't pay attention". That set me off because don't downplay my concerns and laugh on my face when you addressed non of my concerns while braiding my hair. For almost $400 this is the quality of work and service they provide. I will never be back nor will I refer anyone to this place. It's a shame how I was treated and dismissed after spending so much money on my hair. Hopefully I can wash the smell out but then my parts won't be as fresh so I'm doomed either way. Wish I could give zero stars. *** UPDATE I've washed these braids three times and the smell won't come out of the hair. This is disgusting that I sat for six hours didn't get the size I wanted and she didn't leave my edges out. Now I have to either take these out or walk around smelling disgusting from whatever this smell from this subpar "human" hair is. read more
