After rockclimbing, it was time for my bestie and I to get our grub on. Woot! We wanted to go somewhere without fussy parking so Solano Avenue it was. While reading through the Yelp reviews, apparently it is supposed to read "Bangkok Tam" but I started to think that perhaps Bangkok Jam was created in the mid-1990s after the movie "Space Jam." Perhaps I was getting deliriously hungry... Well, it was between the pumpkin curry or the mango curry. I asked the server what one she would prefer. She flashed me a genuine smile and suggested the mango curry. I went for the brown rice. The mango curry had a bit of a kick to it. I couldn't finish it all though but yum yum! Did they recently downsize the size of orders served? We've been eating here since they opened because we used to go the thai place previously in that location. We've been very happy with the food, particularly the veggie fresh rolls, pad see ewe and pumpkin curry. We typically do takeout and love that they deliver. Recently, we ordered delivery per normal and were quite surprised that the portions seemed much smaller than normal. Was it a fluke, as in new containers for the night, or business cutbacks? Not sure if we'll give it another try or not. Quite disappointing. And so they get only 2 stars from me. read more

I ordered here for the first time today, and had it delivered by Door Dash. I ordered the Praram Dish from the street food section of the menu, with duck, steamed vegetables, steamed rice, and salad. The food arrived in less than an hour. I was happy to see how fresh and delicious everything looked. The veggies, rice, and duck were cooked just right, and delicious. I'm very happy I gave this place a try and will definitely be trying some other dishes on their menu. Maybe I'll give them a visit in person next time. :) read more

Once you can stifle your giggles from the weirdish name of this place, you will not be disappointed by the experience. It's officially my new favorite Thai restaurant in Berkeley. I had the Bamee Pad, which was pretty good, but what I REALLY loved was my boyfriend's Pad See Ew. The sauce was perfect, the noodles just right (not too thick and clumpy like some places), and the portions were also decent. Everything is plated nicely and garnished. One random thing is that they don't offer pork as an option on the menu, so you have to choose between chicken, beef, and prawns. The interior of this place is GORGEOUS, including the bathroom. Beautiful white light fixtures, dark wood furniture, fun artwork. They have the cutest red leather chairs at two of the tables, which I vowed to plant my ass in next time. It looks like it should be a lot more expensive of a restaurant than it is. Our lunch entrees were only $7.50 each, and I still had leftovers. Get the mango sticky rice for dessert! read more

Forget your tired same-ol same-ol Thai place. Bangkok Jam has a far more interesting menu. Everything is fresher and nothing is tired. The Wrap and Bite is the greatest thing ever. Buddy Praram is another healthy-but-delicious dish. Good stuff. I really like that they don't cook their vegetables to death. They have a good fresh crunch them. read more

Bangkok Jam is situated discretely at the top of Solano Ave. and might be easily overlooked while driving by. This is probably the reason they don't get as busy as some other establishments (who shall remain nameless, but whose food is nowhere near as good) along Solano. Absolutely do not be discouraged by the lack of a line outside the door! This is some of the best Thai food I've had in a long time. The mango-chicken curry was incredible! The huge pieces of sweet mango were the perfect compliment to the spice of the curry, and lent a welcomed lightness to a rich meal. The brown rice (which is so dark it's almost black), is a must try! It's wonderful sweet, nutty flavor compliments any Thai dish. Wine and beer selections are a little lacking, and the atmosphere feels more like that of a fusion restaurant than an authentic Thai restaurant, but other than that I can't complain. Prices are fair and portions are ample. Service is friendly and fast. read more

Very nice. The shrimp spring rolls were fresh and lively and served with both a peanut sauce (good) and a sweet and sour sauce (surprisingly, better, with a touch of heat). The Pad See Ew (I chose beef for my protein) was good, not spectacular, and it could have been spicier (as I requested). This, of course, is not the most remarkable of dishes, but it's the kind of homey food that I tend to adore. The chicken green curry was a real stand-out for my date. I tried it and found it to be excellent, perhaps a hint creamier from a heavier hand with the coconut milk than ordinary. The flavor was full and balanced - the full reach without any disproportionate elements swinging the dish one way or the other. My date kept saying how good it was (and she has eaten more than her share of Thai green curry) - I can't go that far, but it was very tasty. This is a very simple dish to prepare at home, so it's hard for me to get excited about it. The barbecue pork was a nice surprise - bite size pieces, flavor-wise, that reminded me of Korean BBQ - slightly sweet and salty, it was tasty enough to require no sauces/sides, but it came with 3: a fish sauce mixture (typically my favorite), more of the sweet and sour, and even a Thai-style kind of kimchi (pickled cabbage that looked just like kimchi but is not fermented and much milder with no heat). All in all, good grub - it will take more tastes to measure the restaurant's full worth. 3.3 to 3.4 stars rounded down. read more

Yum yum yum. How do you say "yum" in Thai? Cute, stylish. Great service. Outstanding food. The green curry was simply fantastic-basil, chili, savory goodness. Mango curry was very good; I loved how the chunks of mango served as an excellent counterpoint to the richness of the coconut milk. The pad see ew was also fantastic. We also enjoyed the thai crunch salad, but I thought it was overpriced for what you get. We ordered everything vegetarian (for my veghead daughter). It was all so good, I did not miss the meat. I had the Bangkok Street Noodles for lunch. It was green curry with eggplant, chicken, basil and bamboo shoots in a bowl, accompanied by rice noodles. Flavors were good, and the ingredients definitely fresh, but the taste was a little flat, especially for green curry. We ordered delivery from here via grubhub. We loved every item we ordered and look forward to ordering again from here. Some of the best delivered food we've had in the East Bay - hands down. Very pleased. The Roasted Duck Rolls were golden and crispy and the sauce that comes with them divine. We wished we ordered the larger option of the Tom Kha soup - it was so comforting on a rainy day. Well balanced flavors. The Three Ladies Salad we raved about as well - it was easy to split between 2 people. Go to this place every couple of weeks. Some things are my favorite dishes I've ever had (the yellow curry & Tom kha soup with chicken) and other things that my friends get are good - just not stellar. Service is always kind & helpful. Bangkok Jam has become our hot spot for Thai. We went last night and it was crowded but, they sat us down and served us easily. We started with the ginger ice tea, which was a little warm since they make it fresh.....so we each asked for an additional glass of ice. That helped make it an iced ginger tea. Only open 5 months. We had dinner on a Wednesday night. It was not crowded but we eat early. We were walk ins and they seated us right away - we got to choose. The wait staff was attentive, the place was clean. I'd not go in with a group of more than 6 max - its long and narrow. Pleasing decor and not noisy. We always share our dishes so we don't over eat. They were accommodating to this. The green papaya salad was really good. So was the coconut / Chicken soup. The Ginger tea and the Thai ice tea were good. We erred however in ordering the fillet Mignon (which wasn't I'm pretty sure it was flank or skirt steak - very thin and strip cut), we ordered it medium - it was basically rare. The beef tasted like seafood - probably the cooks error w/ not always grilling in the same spot for types of meat. Our error in ordering beef at a Thai place I'd say. We'd probably have been safe w/ seafood, chicken or pork. The sauces were good. It's not the place for anyone who really likes all their Thai food and does not like unevenness in the menu and is critical, but for American Thai - it will do nicely. read more

This was my first meal upon moving to Berkeley and it kind of painted this fair city in a bad light for me. They weren't busy when we got there, yet the service was super slow. When we did see our server, she was kind of brash and hasty. While they had some more interesting menu offerings than your typical Thai restaurant, the food really lacked, well... taste. We got three different dishes to split and all met the same fate. It reminded me of this place we went to once in the Valley in LA. It was a place old fat white people went to when they felt like something "ethnic" that night (we're talking chicken tikka masala with a side of mashed potatoes here). It just didn't really taste like ANYTHING. Maybe they're skewing the flavors towards the North Berkeley/Albany crowd, which, let's face it, is largely comprised of older white folks, but come on! That weird buffet place in the valley could've done better at imitating Thai food! From my experience with other Thai places around Berkeley (and from conversations with others, this turns out to be a shared experience), Berkeley just sucks at Thai. It's like the first Thai restaurant opened here in the 70s, whitewashed the food so as not to scare away initial customers, people went crazy for it, and every Thai restaurant in Berkeley has been following that formula ever since. Though while other Thai places I've tried at least had a modicum of flavor, Bangkok Jam just really didn't. I might give them a second chance if I'm up on Solano and our original dinner plans backfire, but I'm not holding my breath. read more

The decoration is divine. Makes you think that you have to pay a lot more for the food items on the menu. But I was pleasantly surprised to find the prices to be more than reasonable. Service is good and not pushy. Noodle entree dishes are about 10 bucks. Definitely a good place to bring a date to impress without blowing the bank. Service is a bit slow though. Today is Valentine's Day, I and my wife was originally going to another restaurant until we found out that that particular restaurant was close on every Wednesday. So, we drove around Solano Ave. and on our way to Berkeley. We passed by Bangkok Jam Thai Restro, and decided to give it a try. We ordered Thai Fried Rice with Chicken. My wife ordered Coconut Grilled Chicken with Garlic Noodle. My Thai Fried Rice was just lacking any typical Thai Fried Rice flavor, and was overly salty and full of soy sauce. My wife's dish had good tasty Coconut Grilled Chicken, but the noodle was lacking any garlic flavor. I and my wife are not the type of people who really complain. We normally just never go back to the restaurants that we do not have a good dining experience or good tasty food. We are not choosy, and for about $15 per person, we do not really expect much. However, the dishes we sampled earlier today did not really measure up to even a causal Thai restro dining experience with proper flavor of Thai dishes. read more

Ordered from door dash padthai, bbq chicken and yellow curry. Ordered medium hot. The pad thai came with literally a huge dump of crushed red pepper on top. It was like someone was sprinkling red pepper and the lid came off and a huge load accidentally came off. It was nearly inedible. The food is reasonably good but THEY SERIOUSLY NEED TO BACK OFF THE QUANTITY OF CRUSHED RED PEPPER THEY ARE THROWING INTO THINGS. Until then, order everything as mild. read more

I got extremely sick after eating here. With that being said I'm not absolutely sure if it was because of what I ate here. The food was pretty good (even though I did get sick later [like, really sick]), but my main complaint was the service. I didnt get service until 10 min after I was seated. We've been looking for a new Thai Restaurant and had forgotten about Bangkok Jam. We were the first diners this Monday evening and there were only 2 other parties by the time we left, about 6.45pm The place is dark, too dark and not cheerful, but the food is 5-star good. We ordered the crispy tofu, salt and pepper calimari and the mango seafood curry and brown rice. The service was pleasant and efficient. But I take back 2 stars because the place is dismal and dark. There is space for lively, chatting parties enjoying being out, but I feel it's dark enough that I have to whisper in revererence. Candles were brought round to each table, but that didn't help. One of our staff members asked for this as his last staff meal with us before heading back for his masters. I'm so glad he did! First, I want to commend the staff for their patience while I made 3-4 changes and they accepted it graciously. Second, the food is yummy! One of the guys has a Thai test by tasting the Pad Thai - Score! Everyone loved the food - I had the eggplant with brown rice - delicious! The veggies were cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious without being overly sweet. The Thai Crunch salad looked amazing. Bangkok Jam has the best lemongrass noodle soup anyone has ever had in the world. I had to go twice this week, wednesday being the first day I tried it. Most delicious thing ever. the red curry was also very good and smoky. The chicken noodle soup was god but not extremely flavorful or anything special. I would recommend the pad basil noodles, spicy and delicious. You must try the lemongrass chicken soup on the lunch menu. You can't get any better than that. read more

3.5 stars: Good food but a bit on the sweet side. Service is uneven which is to be expected since it's been only open less than a month. The Wrap and Bite was more of a novelty for me (my wife liked it) than a satisfying appetizer. Pumpkin soup was tasty with the right amount of spices. Green curry tasted OK but looked blab. Crispy chicken was solid but too sweet. Decor has been updated and makes the place look spacious and airy compared to Boran. Overall a solid dining experience except for the overly sweet dishes . It was soooo good! I love this place! I had fried rice ( sorry forgot the name of the dish) and so delicious. My husband doesn't actually like Thai food, but he also liked it. He chose hottest curry, but it was not hot enough for him anyway...maybe the coconut milk makes it taste milder. Well,as I don't like hot/ spicy food, so I don't care about it. One of good thing about them was that they offer vegetarian plate. My husband doesn't eat meat and I asked them to make the meal vegetarian. They also have organic place and I will try it next time. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Berkeley. I have always had prompt and friendly service, and it's one of the few locations on Solano Avenue that has some outdoor seating (though only 2 or 3 tables). The decor is really nice, and it has a comfortable ambience. They also have really thick paper napkins, which I appreciate because I think I am an unusally messy eater. One thing I would like to note is that a few months back I had to make some changes to my diet and cut back on salt - the kitchen was happy to accommodate my request, and honestly my food still tasted really good despite the lack of table salt. My favorite item is the healthy fried rice, which has so much flavor and is a really big portion - I can usually make two meals out of this. I've also really liked their Pad Thai, Pumpkin Soup, and Pad See-Ewe, all of which I would recommend. I live on the other side of Berkeley, but it's definitley worth the trip! read more

I measure the quality of a Thai restaurant by its Tom Yum. Bangkok Jam's a 7.5/10. The Tom Yum street noodle is pretty good too. You have to get the FBI for dessert (Fried Bananas with coconut Ice Cream). this is a very yummy dessert. I love the ambience and they have a pretty good selection of Thai food. Not the best Thai food I've ever had (I've been to Thailand), but it's pretty good for a casual night out. Lovely ambience in a charming part of the city. read more

This review is from several years of eating here. Have gone for lunch, dinner, large group of 16 people, with grandma and kids, food delivered for 4 to 10 people. Never had a bad meal yet. Service can be unpredictable, for a restaurant that is always so busy they need another person to help. But not enough to ruin the experience. Things to order: Satay Chicken Roast Duck rolls Salt and pepper calamari Tom Yum and Tom Kha Soups Papaya Salad, Thai Crunch salad, Three Ladies salad.
