I'm not sure what all the hype is on this place. I have to say i love the decor, it is a modern trendy feel. This is what gets this place a three star review for me. Appetizer: Crab Rangoon - now this was REAL crab, you never seem to get that anywhere, however, it was a little fishy for the crab rangoon taste, the shell was delicious though, nice thin and crispy. The sweet and sour sauce has a honey it and was some of the best I have had, very different. Vegetable Pad Thai - there was absolutely nothing special about this dish, and was not my favorite by any means for all the pad thai I have had...i was quite disappointed :( Surprise Roll: This was a huge disapointment, for the simple fact that it was $11.95 and it only had a chopped up white fish and avocado on top. This was one of the pricier rolls and claimed to be a chef's creation. If that was really all the chef could come up with he should be kicked out. We saw some delicious rolls coming out and they were $3-4 cheaper than this roll and it had way more going on with it! This place is very expensive for lunch our bill was $34 with tip just for an appetizer, entree, an roll, no drinks just water. I came here on a suggestion from a friend and glad I did. I took a seat at the sushi bar and the restaurant seemed pretty busy. It was hard to choose what to order so I ended up ordering a few appetizers and some sushi. The sushi was hard to choose as well so I ended up getting the California roll. I was disappointed that they pulled it out already wrapped in plastic wrap, but did notice that most other sushi was made to order. I had spring rolls, dumplings and fried tofu. All was delish! I used to live in Dayton, and used to enjoy going to Thai 9 and kicking it outdoors for lunch and happy hours, and it's always been awesome; but I've never reviewed it. So...after a couple of drinks at Century Bar, we scuffled over to Thai 9 for some grub. I don't have to tell you what the dishes look like, as you can see from photos, or what the place looks like, as you can see those photos as well. Just know that they are true to the establishment. Our hostess was extremely cool. We swapped compliments and stories on how fly we each looked in our stylish eyeglasses from Zenni Optical. I said, "hey, cool glasses", and she's like, "I know, right!?" And we bantered on from there -to the chagrin of my date who was probably wishing she had cool eyeglasses too. I'm like, "awww, you're sexy as hell with or without glasses, don't be like that." This helps get you out of the doghouse somewhat. LOL. Our appetizer was the Crab Rangoon. Girlfriend smashed it. I had like one piece. She did say she was hungry beforehand, so... Next, she had the Pad Thai. #3 on the spicy scale. Too hot for my tastes. She loved it, but couldn't eat it all. One of the best Thai restaurants in Dayton. I was part of a large party of people on a busy night, and they took care of us well. I had the Pad Thai spicy 7, which is my go-to dish at a new Thai restaurant, as if they can't get that right, it doesn't generally pay to go deeper into the menu. Also had spring rolls and wontons. The pad thai was excellent - not too wet, and a 7 spice level was good. Next time, I'll probably go with an 8. The wontons and spring rolls were good as well, and everyone I was with enjoyed what they had. My only negative was that the ambiance was lacking, as they were so busy. The tables next to us were extremely loud and made it difficult to talk to each other. The service was a little slow because they were so busy, so it took us almost 2 hours to complete our meal. We didn't mind, but keep it in mind if you're in a hurry on a Friday night. read more

There's not a thing on the menu that isn't good, from the edamame to the crab ragoon, coconut milk soup, the curry (ANY color), the noodles, the sushi! Everything is fresh, authentic and delicious. It's one of my favorite restaurants and as a foodie and pretty good cook myself, I love being able to go to a restaurant and actually enjoy the meal instead of thinking how I could've made it better. Something has changed in the past year or so, and not for the better. It was average Thai food for Dayton, OH. in the past but now you'd be off going to the Panda Express. Really had 3 issues with dinner tonight, which is/was a Friday 6:30ish. 1st) service was slow and inattentive, waited 7 to 10 minutes before anyone came to get drink orders. Waitress had little or no knowledge of draft beer selection. Another 6 to 8 minutes to get our Diet Cokes. Over all we spent more time waiting on drinks, appetizers and dinner then we did actually eating. 2)Draft beer selection was all local crafts, which is normally ok, except all where either IPA's or Stouts, no Lagers, Ambers or Reds. no main stream ie; Sam Adams, Yeungling etc . Bottle beer selection was normal, but NO cold glasses. 3)Food was somewhat tasteless, Drunken Noodles, Pad Thai mostly all noodles and few veggies, peanuts egg etc. Too many other choices for dinner around to waste money and time here. read more

Hey just so we are clear the 1-10 level of hot you'd like you food to be... they use real Thai chilies. I like spicy, not too spiced but I prefer a good kick. My partner and I decided on a level four, seems pretty reasonable.. our first visit here and we decided to do three appetizers, soup, and the pad Thai to share. Som Tom Wonton soup Shrimp rolls And something else Hey mistakes happen and our server handled it like a pro, but our food was way too hot that I couldn't even eat it. Believe me I tried, I felt like I was going to pass out.. but our waiter took the pad Thai and som Tom back and took it down to one. Pad Thai had no heat at all and the som tom I was still unable to eat. I know that it would have been good though. It was good when it caught my tough on fire. Cocktails are nothing special. The place is beautiful definitely expected some small dark place but it's a HUGE dark place. Not going to lie we went two night in a row trying completely different things each night. My partner got the duck Thai basil? And loved it. Wings and those wonderful dough wrapped pan fried half moon shaped yummy things that the name of has slipped my mind. Recommend that you ask not to set in the middle room next to the kitchen entrance all you will hear is the silverware clashing, kitchen chaos of your food being made. After ALL THE HYPE and ALL THE GOOD REVIEWS, our visit last night was a disappointment. This is mostly because we thought the price was high considering this wasn't the best Thai we've ever had. It was certainly the most expensive I've ever had, but not the best. We visited at 7p on a Wednesday night. There was no wait for our table of three and our server was great. While we could tell the ingredients were fresh, we felt that $75 (including tip) was too much for one appetizer, three rolls and one entree. Crab Rangoon - we could absolutely see the freshness. I thought they were nice because I was craving something fried. But hubby felt they weren't sweet enough. Rolls - Hubby got the Red and Rainbow Rolls. He felt they were pretty basic and nothing special. He usually enjoys spicy and/or creativity. I don't think this hit either for him. I got the Bakery Roll. They tempura fried each individual piece instead of the roll as a whole. I never thought I'd say this, but it might've been too much tempura - I could no longer feel the texture of the rice or the flavor of the cream cheese. Pad Thai - The portion was on the small side and it wasn't as flavorful as we expected. For the last few bites we decided to request a side of peanut butter sauce and this made it much better. I've been here so many times and every time I dine here, it's a great experience. The staff is accommodating and the food is incredible. You can choose how spicy you want your dish. I almost always get the pineapple chicken, spicy level four. A good tip: go here for lunch. The portions are almost the same and the cost is less. While the name is Thai 9 the menu is Asian. There is a long sushi list and other non Thai items. I found the sushi to be good, but not excellent. I really enjoy the other items on the menu that include noodles, curries, udon and tempura. The appetizers are very good from the spring rolls to chicken and coconut milk soup. For entrees you can pick your level of spice based on a number system (spicy is really spicy). I really enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant which is modern/trendy but not over done. My favorite Thai place in Dayton, a must stop for anyone craving some Thai in the area! Thai 9 is located in the historic Oregon District of downtown Dayton. It's tucked away behind the Omega music store and you can't miss it. This restaurant has a great atmosphere perfect for every occasion. It is nice, rustic and open with high ceilings and modern decor. There are a lot of options here for anyone new and familiar with Thai cuisine and an array of sushi offerings as well. We arrived on a Tuesday night craving Thai and opted for the chicken satay and lard Kai to start. The peanut sauce with the satay is to die for and the lard Kai is one of my favorite Thai dishes and not too bad here. Our main course consisted of Green Curry w/ chicken and Pad Khee Mao w/ pork. The Pad Khee Mao has an option of egg or rice noodle but keeping it authentic I suggest the wise rice noodle. The Green Curry was nothing special but they were definitely generous with the portions. We couldn't finish most of the food. Overall great atmosphere, a little on the pricey side, but tasty food and attentive service. I'll be back! read more

It's a little on the pricey side for Thai food, but this was a great escape for us when we were in town for a soccer tournament and staying just down the street at the Crowne Plaza (a very dated hotel just across from the convention center). Thai 9 was a short walk to get to in a very hip area. The food was high quality and the wine selection good. We were able to get in with a party of 3 pretty quickly for a Saturday night, but the restaurant was definitely hopping. The decor really makes you feel like you're in Thailand or in a Thai neighborhood - lots of warm wood, decorations, etc. If we make it back to Dayton, I'm sure we'll check it out again. read more

Well, for someone who has been to Thailand a few times, as well as Thai-9 a few times, this place is an excellent and consistent representation of Thai food with the American twist. Salads and curries and spot on. I grouper grouper curry is my favorite. (The waiter asks for the spice level from 1 to 9, so you have a lot of flavor control). Place is big, spacious. The only complain that I have - the ambiance: its a little dull. Could be solved by some nice background music (I've been here 5 times - never heard anything chill and relaxing on the background). Come blistering heat or blistering cold, we were determined to go eat in town. This particular night, it was the blistering cold version. We parked about half a block away so it wasn't terrible for a normal night but because it was so cold, that half a block might as well have been 3 miles. Needless to say, we were very relieved to finally step inside this classy, well decorated establishment. I saw the patio area and saw the awesome potential of eating out there during warmer weather. But, for the sake of a well-rounded Yelp review, I ordered a a roll in addition to my chicken green curry, spice level 6 (had to warm up after that 3 miles walk). Our server was very nice, attentive and fast. The curry was absolutely fantastic and even though I was full, I wanted to order more. But, there was one more thing to do: try the sushi! And the final verdict? It was great! I finally found a place that can do Thai and sushi very well. I no longer have to choose one or the other! This doesn't get any better! But wait, this place does! Their drink and beer selection was on point as well. Cuz, you can't just warm up with spicy food on a cold night. You need good beer to top everything off. The Thai food I had the last time I was here was delicious. I happen to like spicy and you can request whatever spice level you like. For those who are less into spicy, you may want to err on the lower side of spice level. I ordered garlic chicken stir-fry, which I loved. The portions were large. My wife ordered something similar and we ended up with some nice leftovers for lunch the next day. I was also delighted that Thai 9 has some interesting and varied craft beers, and on tap, no less. On the negative side, the service we received was notably slow. We had a large group but there was another large group adjacent to us that seemed to get all kinds of great waitstaff service. The hubbie and I went here for dinner and though it was good, I can't say it was great. The good: The service - absolutely 5 stars. The papaya salad - Good flavor, nice heat (to our liking) and a good portion size. A plus - it wasn't swimming in "dressing". The not so good, but okay: The Tom Yum Goong; the broth was flavorful, but unfortunately to me tasted like chicken stock without all the flavor that you normally associate with this dish (such as lemongrass and ginger). The shrimp though was perfectly cooked!. The curry was also only so so. It had a wonderful flavor except that it was missing something (perhaps fish sauce?) It was just overly sweet without that "bite/sour note" you normally associate with a good curry. The really not good: The steamed fish - it was completely over steamed and quite dry. I went to college at the a University Of Dayton and didn't discover this little piece of heaven until my junior year. I've never had Thai food that tasted fresher or had as much flavor as Thai 9. Everytime my parents came to visit me or if a friend was in town or if we just wanted a night off campus, we would come here. Their green curry is mouth watering while their noodle dishes are perfectly cooked. They have great choices, great appetizers, and great service. I really hope I can get back there as soon as possible because I'm missing it everyday. This place is also great for parties, we went here the night before my graduation with about 15 people. I did the check in on line using Yelp, We arrived on time and Thai 9 didn't respected the check in, so they put us on the list at our arrival. They told me they don't use any software or system for early check in or for reservations, so we wait more than an hour for our table. Don't waste your time using Yelp for Thai 9. We decided on Thai Nine for our last dinner in Dayton primarily because: 1. This place had the most reviews on Yelp out of any restaurant in Dayton. 2. On a Sunday night, this was one of the few places open that didn't contain the name "Dennys" or "McDonalds". 3. I like Thai food and I like sushi and I also liked the area this place was located in. We started with a Won Ton Soup, Tuna Roll and Miso Soup. The Won Ton soup was very flavorful and the pork dumplings were tasty and giant sized! M liked his Tuna Roll and honestly, you can't really mess up Miso Soup so that was fine For our meals we had Chicken Pad Thai and Shrimp - Vegetable Tempura. I liked that they would spice up your food on a "hot" scale of 1-9. I did 4 as I like to be the one to dump more chili sauce in my food!!! Nicely done with white meat chicken and flavorful sauce. I liked this better than my usual Thai haunt in Sherman Oaks, CA. The Tempura was very good and a giant portion enough for two. They also had a good assortment of specialty cocktails and wine list. Decor was nicer inside than on the outside and the staff was friendly and fast. If I ever make it back to Dayton, I would come back here for sure!!! read more
