This was my second time here at Thai basil. Right off the bed we came here for dinner and I thought that the portions were going to be a little bit bigger. But unfortunately it felt like the dinner portions were the exact same thing as lunch portions and they charge more for dinner obviously. That was one thing that I was disappointed in. The food was good that was in the point but if you going to be charging people more for dinner you better be giving more portion size. The service was good. The one thing that is my pet peeve is when we asked for a Coke and they fill the cup up with 75% eyes that's extremely frustrating. But overall it's not a bad place to try out I probably won't be bad just because the portions were they good but it wasn't a bad place. read more

BACKGROUND - Everyone knows you can find more Thai restaurants in Portland than you can find a McDonald's -- but what about Lake Oswego where I recently moved to? Hmmm... PROS - Extremely close to where I live. I could even walk here (It would probably take me 30 mins) if I wanted to, but come on! When you are hungry, the last thing you want to do is walk half an hour in cold weather to a place where you know would take you 5 mins to drive to! The interior is very clean, very Thai posh. In a strip mall, I find this surprising. It is also very spacious, with ample amount of parking space. CONS - I gave this place two chances before deciding to write a not so pleasant review. I visited this place for the first time a couple months back with a friend on a weekday night and enjoyed some tom kha with chicken (good flavor, a true basic to measure a Thai restaurant), Oswego noodle with shrimp (average flavor) and a mango sweet rice for dessert. What threw us off is the service. On our table, there was a promo that states "Summer Special! Mango Sweet Rice for only $4.99!" -- however, when the check came, we were charged $6.99. We waved down our waitress (who never came by to see how our food was) to ask her about why we were charged $6.99 when there is a promo for the dessert going for $4.99. She explains the promo is no longer valid, and that is why we were charged $6.99 as she grabs the laminated promo off our table and leaves. We looked around at all tables and the promos were still there. The waitress goes back to chit-chatting with another waitress -- didn't even bother throwing the other "expired" promos away on 20+ tables (empty tables as well, I should note). Last night was the second time I ventured into this place with a group of friends (4 of us). Two friends shared a pad thai with tofu and said it was okay. My partner had the pineapple fried rice and I had the Oswego noodle with chicken. The pineapple fried rice was flavorful, however the Oswego noodle that I ordered last time was bland, soggy and greasy. The three things that I dread in eating food were all evident on my dish with a small portion to boot. I was very hungry so I asked for the chili condiments and added a lot of spice to my sad dish. At $10.50 for such a small portion (it was basically LUNCH portion) and with the protein of chicken, that's a bit steep. I have been to enough Thai restaurants in my life to know places would not dare charge over the $7.00-$8.00 range for such a portion. So when a place charges $10.50 for a basic chicken pad kee mao that doesn't even taste good (let's agree to drop the "Oswego noodle" title), that's ridiculous. As for last night's service? You guessed it! BAD! No one came by to check on us. Even when we were done, waitresses were socializing and did not bring us the check. We had to go out of our way to wave a waitress down (they try really hard NOT to look at you) -- haha what's up with that? Do you not want our money for your lousy food? Needless to say...not coming back! No matter how enticing the proximity of this crap restaurant to where I live! POINTERS - If you really want good Thai food, you won't find it in Lake Oswego. Make the drive to SE Portland and bring worthy joy to your tastebuds. read more

I stay for a night or two every week at the Marriott Fairfield Inn off of Meadows Rd, right off the Kruse Way exit where I-5 meets 217. There are a number of chain restaurants in the area, such as Stanfords, Applebee's Chevy's, and the Olive Garden, but I try to stick to the family run restaurants like this one. Thai Basil opened up within the last 3 months and are a great addition to the area. It is run by a Thai couple, their daughters and other family. Without all exception, they are friendly and efficient. The decor is nicely done, and there are lots of tables. Prices are very reasonable. I ususally eat there for dinner and am working on trying the whole menu. Drunken Noodles is my favorite so far, but like you would expect from a Thai restaurant, the soups, curries, noodles, and stir fry dishes each have a unique flavor and are yummy. Ample parking and easy access. Give it a shot when in the area. read more

Thai Basil is one of my favorite lunch places in the LO business park area. It's a popular place during lunch time but the wait staff handles the traffic with ease; the little restaurant can accommodate more than it looks. Food comes out very quickly so you can eat and be on your way. The lunch menu items are affordable and come in big portions. I can usually make two meals out of the dishes. The sauce and veggie combinations are delicious and hit the spot. I recommend the pumpkin coconut curry - so good! The fried rice dishes and pad thai are also very tasty. I love Thai food, and my favorite dish happens to be tofu pineapple fried rice. So believe me when I say that I have had my share of pineapple fried rice in my day! And Thai basil, suprised me as being really excellent, it had alot of flavor that just outstood my current favorite Thai restaurant in San Francisco. The presentation was also fantastic for a 12 dollar plate, there was a carrot carved bird, top of a pineapple, and cucumbers and a small side salad. I would defiently recommend this restaurant to anyone staying or living in this area it was fantastic! My only reason to deduct a star is the waiters seemed to much in a hurry and ignored us at the table when trying to get soup, and seemed to really rush the bill. However the food is exceptional so give Thai Basil a try!! read more

I ordered the beefy curry (aka mussamun curry), which is my go-to, "test" dish if you will when trying a new Thai place. I like a little spice, but not much, so I usually order it mild because Thai mild generally = my medium. Out comes a sad looking dish of yellowish broth with potatoes, beef, and carrots in it. Some dried peanuts on one edge of it, and a mound of rice on the side of the dish. But....mussamun curry is generally a rich, dark orange-colored sauce. Ah! They must have brought out the wrong dish I thought....but no, she said mussamun when she set it down, and it says beefy curry on the check [that they have already set down before I took a bite, grrr.] Okay, I will try it. Perhaps this is a new, knock my socks off way to make mussamun. Um, nope! Oh no no no. No flavor, at all. Okay, well someone will be by in a minute to ask how we're doing and I'll tell them this isn't working. Sometime soon. Really, I'm sure they will. My friend stood up and waved her arms. Someone is bringing me peanut sauce to try to make this palatable. [I spoon on peanut sauce.] Nope. Friend is done eating. Finally, someone stops by to see if we'd like a box. No, no box needed here: there is no curry in my curry. Confused, she says she will check with the kitchen, and offers to get me something else. I appreciate that, but lunch is about over now and I've got to get to work. She comes back, and says they comped the curry (and I thank her, very much, for doing that -- this is the reason for 2 stars), and explains: "You ordered mild. So we don't add curry. If you order mild, we hold back the curry." But, the dish is a curry, I say, So mild = no curry in the curry? Yes. Recommended if you are a fan of bland coconut milk soup with chunks of potato, carrot and beef. It's on the menu, but in code: just ask for the mussamun curry, mild. read more

Oh this is sooo good. This is the best Thai Food I've had in Portland, and I've tried many, if not all of them. I've only been there once, just recently discovered them but I will go back soon! After several trips from our home in the Murrayhill area of Beaverton - It is official - WE LOVE THAI BASIL!! I am seriously gluten sensitive and the Drunken Noodles can be ordered Gluten Free!! The Fresh Salad rolls some with a delicious (and Gluten Free) sauce that I also use for the Chicken Satay (can't have peanut sauce!!). My husband is a huge fan of their shrimp and chicken pad thai - my boys (15 & 12) like the panang curry, peanut sauce curry, drunken noodles, and this steamed chicken with rice and spicy ginger sauce. We have not had a bad meal in over 12 visits and I have never had such attentive service. The portions are also quite generous. read more

My friend and I were seated right away in the empty restaurant on a Tuesday night but after waiting 10 minutes without any acknowledgement from any staff (no water, no greeting from a waiter or waitress), we got up and left. It also looked very clean. As we drove home I said " wow do they have the food hermetically sealed? I don't smell anything?" he agreed. That was a little hint of what was to come. Got home everything was luke warm (5-6 min drive) I plated the soup and we tasted it... It had only a hint of flavor.. it was as if someone extremely watered it down. The soup wasn't worth eating so I plated the noodles and lemon chicken. The drunken noodles are supposed to be a spicy dish and had no heat at all. I would serve it to a five year old. I was lacking flavor as well. The lemongrass chicken was a sad chicken breast that looked like it was a microwaved frozen pre-prepared you would get at Applebee's. with steamed veg. Again barely a hint of flavor. We were so disappointed we called and complained and said we would like to bring it all back for a refund. When we got there it was a scene from kitchen nightmares.. Complete indifference to why we were returning it.. I tried to have a conversation and explain the problems with lack of flavor.. Her only response was "you probably just don't like it" I tried to start a conversation about it by asking her if she tried our dishes. She responded by saying "I had this today and it was good" Very nice lie... She happened to have our exact two entrées and soup and desert just that day. I was looking for a "we are sorry, what is your complaint.... I will let the kitchen know." After advising she couldn't refund my credit card she tried to give me a gift certificate.. We advised we would never be back. The she advised she was not supposed to do this and gave me cash. She almost had me convinced it was us.. I thought I possibly had a cold and couldn't taste anything but we went to another Thai restaurant and nearly ordered an identical dinner and it was delicious. They might have had a new cook, quality normally goes down on Sundays since the head chef typically has off. Or the people in Lake Oswego like Thai food that tastes like it was prepared in a nursing home. But you can't excuse the manager's actions or lack of action. I have never sent food back let alone gotten in my car to return food. I am glad we did the food was so horrible, and I got to go to another Thai restaurant and have a delicious meal and settle my Thai craving. read more

I had Thai tea; the wife had hot tea. Appetizers: lettuce wraps, Tom yum soup. Stopped in and dicided to test it out so I started with Massaman curry and pad Kee Mao. The Pad Kee Mao was stuck together, gummy and really had no flavor. The massaman curry was just chunky potato, carrot and beef and holy moly was it salty!! Couldn't eat it. We returned our food and tipped the waitress (She was a dear) and wont be back here. We recently moved to the area and decided to try this place as it is near our home and office. We called in an order for pick up and it was ready very quickly (about 10 minutes). We tried the vegetable pad thai which by far my favorite of the three dishes we ordered. We also tried the lemon grass chicken and the peanut delight chicken. They also were good but the lemon grass chicken was superior to the peanut delight. We will definitely be trying other dishes from the menu. read more

This is a big favorite among my colleagues. We ALWAYS eat here. ALWAYS. And I'm not complaining. They do Thai food very well. My favorite is their crab fried rice, which comes with generous portions of crab meat. It's incredibly delish! Another thing to try is their drunken noodles. Three stars because the staff is very welcoming. I ordered my food spicy and it's pretty bland. I had a feeling it would not be spicy enough because it's LO, so I asked for extra hot peppers flakes. I was shocked when I got home and seen the container with the pepper flakes. It was basically empty. The chicken in my soup was rubber. Also, the soup container looked as if someone already had ate a serving out of it. That was disappointing because I paid $10.00 for a large and the broth was the best part but missing a cup. After a long day of work I was looking forward to take out. This place would be fine for a person who has only had American Thai food. If your well traveled or a foodie don't get to-go!! Service was great, no problem there. Had the Lemongrass Chicken Pad Thai. The flavor of the sauce etc. was good, but the quality of the chicken did the whole thing in. There was a pile of noodles with these strange pressed chicken strips on top, drown by a gallon of peanut sauce. Maybe to try to cover them up. Had there been fresh, moist white meat chicken, this would have been an entirely different review. This was prison chicken. I've never been, but it has all the qualities I would imagine in the type you'd receive behind bars. Unfortunately, I can't go back now. That ruined it. I was surprised to read a review on the 26th that the food was salty. I guess they used up all the salt on that customer because my main course (steamed veg and beef with peanut sauce) was completely saltless. I didn't really expect steamed veg to be laden with flavor, but the veggies were almost inedible except for the peanut sauce. The beef tasted like it had been boiled (twice) and was very poor. I had the vegetable spring rolls - same thing: tasteless and I had to drown them in the sauce to make them taste like anything. I am not someone who likes to drown food in flavoring, but there should be some sort of baseline. The service, while not specifically unpleasant, was very inattentive. I would have liked a second cup of hot tea, or the opportunity to ask for some salt, but from the time of my order, 'till the time I gestured across the restaurant to the man serving to finally bring me the check, nobody approached my table at all. Craving for Thai food so we decided to come here. Service was good. Person greeted us with a smile. He was going to sit us on the tables, but we requested for a booth since we has 2 little children. And they did accommodate us with that. We ordered Drunken Noodles, Chicken Pad Thai, and BBQ chicken. Taste was good since the littles ones at all their food. The server kept checking up on us to see if we need anything and kept refilling our water. Relaxing atmosphere with their calming music. Clean and decent. Our bill was less than $40!!! We started patronizing them after signing up with OnPoint Credit Union next door several years ago, and each time we have not been disappointed. It has become our favorite Thai restaurant. It has a decent classy comfortable atmosphere with a large dining room in a small strip mall, so we have never had to wait for a table. they have consistently good food, pleasant prompt service, and reasonable prices. What more could we ask for? It is in a cheesy strip mall with limited parking, so you may pass it by without giving them a chance, but we have not had a hard time finding a place to park close by, so don't let that turn you off. I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

A very delightful surprise tucked into an unassuming strip mall. Thanks to Yelp reviews we dropped in for a very delicious meal and friendly service. We had the Tom Yum soup with medium spice. The bowl was filled with enough of this succulent soup to fill our cups twice. Vibrant flavors and just the right heat (medium) didn't overwhelm the generous portions of chicken & veggies. We didn't leave a drop! Next we had the Yum Yum salad with beef. Again, a perfect combination of savory spices and crisp, fresh vegetables perfectly complemented the tender morsels of medium-rare beef. Our final couse was the Garlic Halibut. The spices in this dish were toned down to not overpower the more delicate tasting fish. A thick filet of halibut, topped with vegetables in a light, garlicky sauce was plenty for two of us (especially after the soup & salad). A side of sticky rice was perfect for sopping up the remaIning sauce. A crisp glass of Washington state Pinot Gris added to our excellent dining experience! The tab was under $50 before tip. As Summer turns to Fall here in PDX, I often find myself with a hankerin' for some spicy food. So yesterday, hubs & I decided to check out Thai Basil in Lake Oswego - an unassuming looking Thai restaurant in a non-descript strip mall not too far from our home. We walked through the doors and were pleasantly surprised by the colorful and attractive decor. We were greeted quickly and warmly, and perused the menu looking for some old favorites. Hubby ordered Pad Ga Prau with Chicken, and I ordered the aptly-titled Yum Yum Salad with Beef. Both dishes were well-executed versions of themselves - the Pad Ga Prau sauce was light and not at all greasy. And my Yum Yum Salad was probably the best version I've ever tasted - the beef was plentiful and extremely tender. Portions are generous without being ridiculously large. The entrees are a dollar or two more expensive than some other Thai restaurants nearby, but I was happy to pay a little more for quality and great service. read more

I tend to like Thai places that are quick, flavorful, and offer a good value for lunch. I don't need a ton of food, just something a bit more than a sammich. Thai Basil not only provides a close stop to my office, but the food is quick, flavorful, right-sized, and well spiced. I usually get the drunken noodle hot, which gives a wonderful amount of sweet heat without setting my kneecaps ablaze. I usually get my dish with tofu (not a vegetarian, but I prefer tofu in my Thai dishes...not sure why...), and they always seem to hit it just right. The little strip mall in LO that houses Thai Basil is an absolute CF to get in/out during lunch, so I would strongly suggest either going before 11:30 or after 1:30. While Thai Basil might not be too terribly busy, the parking lot is a mess. I like the place, but I don't think it is worth the hassle of parking during the lunch hour, so that is the only reason not to get 5 stars. read more
