Took my mom out for lunch today and decided to try Thai Basil. we both had a craving for Thai. Pretty empty for lunch but that didn't seem to matter to the unenthusiastic waitress who barely said hello upon entering. She set the tone for what turned out to be a cold, unwelcoming feeling. We ordered spring rolls, Chicken satay, soups and drunken noodles. All were pretty good but nothing that great that I would over look the bad attitude. Never cleared the appetizer plates, had to ask for more water, asked for boxes to take leftovers, etc. won't go back to a place that makes you feel unwelcome. Found a plastic ring in my soup! While eating the Tom Yum soup I bit into a plastic ring wrapped up in some vegetables. While there is room for improvement with Thai Basil, I'm giving this place 5 stars because the food is definitely the best Thai/sushi we've had in Detroit so far. The location is pretty plain and inconspicuous, however the interior is clean and new. Service was not incredible friendly, however it was easy to get a table and very attentive to our needs. I got the Thai basil dish at medium plus heat and it was absolutely fantastic. Really great flavor with a good burn. My wife ordered the drunken noodles and the last time we were there she ordered the pad Thai. Really enjoyed the drunken noodles (a little too spicy on medium for her, so go mild). The pad Thai was very tasty (a little too mild on medium for her). So they need to figure out their heat levels a bit. But the flavor is there. We also ordered sushi: Mexican roll, spicy tuna, rainbow. All were excellent and fresh. One other note, they are working in their liquor license. So no adult beverages yet. Usually that would knock them down a star for me. But as I said, they are working on getting it, and the food is the best we've had yet here. Great place!! read more

Okay, in my opinion 1 star is generous for my experience. This is my first and last experience at this restaurant! So, it's my friend's birthday and she recommended this restaurant. The pad Thai is a popular dish but the noodles were overcooked and it was drenched in some sort of vinegar! I have to say the chicken that was added was good but when it came in contact with the vinegar it was not pleasant. I couldn't take it longer so I sent it back and thought I would be safe with crab Rangoon? They were oily! It was literally dripping off of them! The lady serving said she was the owner and told me and my party not to eat there if we didn't like it! It's not our fault if the food was bad! My friend had eaten there in the past and she said that my dish usually tasted better but it was awful today! I wouldn't waste my time coming here! What a strange experience! I will try my best to give a fair review. Food alone is 4/5 stars. Treatment of the customers is 2/5. Overall score is 3/5. Ambiance is nice. Food is good. But that's it. Freezing cold inside with a fan blowing cold air right on our table. We went around 9:15pm. Restaurant closes at 10pm. I asked for no spices but was told my dish is curry which is already mildly spiced. I clarified several times that if it was mild that's okay, but that I don't want spicy. I was told each time I asked that it was mild. Asked for separate checks when we ordered. Food arrived fast and my dish was very spicy. Probably more like medium to hot. I know the hotness of a dish can be subjective, but I had my friends try my dish and they all felt it was more than medium bordering on hot. Checks were not separated. Asked again to have them separated. Waitress comes back with separate checks. Tip is included at 18%, which I think Is strange. Especially for one person ordering a $12 -$15 dinner. And then when they run your card you get the empty line to add a tip. So if you aren't paying attention the waitress gets tipped twice. If service is good I tip 20% and I tip more for outstanding service. So 18% is less than I tip 98% of the time. But the fact that the tip is added to the bill means the waitress doesn't have to earn the tip. I realized I could have I asked to have it removed. But if it wasn't added, I would have added 20% myself, but if they want less of a tip, that's their choice. I realize including the tip is to prevent people from not tipping at all or giving low tips. But I think it's tacky when it isn't a large party. Provide great service and give me the chance to reward it. I recently went to a restaurant with entrees starting at $40 with a party of 14 and the tip was not included. In that case I feel it should be. At the end of the night I pulled up my Yelp coupon for 10% off and handed it to the waitress. She took my phone and I wasn't looking because someone in my party asked me a question. But apparently she hit the "mark as used button" and then she told me she didn't know what happened to the coupon. Once you mark it as used it can't be used and it disappears on the screen. Did she do this on accident? It was strange. But the message seemed to be the coupon isn't there so you can't use it. Well, I am not a penny pinching miser, but it was the principle of it. So I grabbed my daughter's phone and logged into her yelp and pulled the coupon up on her phone. The two other people in my party got yelp and we all requested the 10% off of our bill. I also told the friendly couple next to us about it. They too were saying how cold it was in there. Anyway, we finish dinner and it's 10:06pm. Suddenly they turn on these bright lights like closing time at a bar and they start vacuuming with a loud vacuum right by out table. Get the hell out was the message. I was shocked to be treated that way! It was 6 minutes after closing time on a Friday night. We were just about to leave. There's no need to do that. They could have politely reminded us of the time and this review would have been better. I regularly frequent many Asian restaurants where I am warmly received as a good customer who tips well and I have been politely told that it's closing time, and I have no problem with that. I understand people want to go home. And I understand they can't go home until I leave. But the way in which we were treated made me feel like we were being thrown out of a bar. Bright lights and vacuuming are not the same as politely asking us to be aware of the time. We ended up going next door to get frozen yogurt, which closes st 11pm. At a few minutes after 11pm, the worker politely told us it was closing time. We had no problem with that and we left. To sum it up, I felt like my dish was not mild, but I was told repeatedly it was. The restaurant was freezing cold. My Yelp coupon was not well received, but it could have been an accident. The checks were not separate, as I requested, until I asked again. Tips were added on all bills no matter the amount. After cashing out bright lights came on and lots vacuuming by our table drove us out. read more

Save your money! I ordered drunken noodles off of the lunch menu today. No meat, no extra anything. Just wanted the vegetable. On the menu it says $8.25 and served with soup of the day. When I picked it up they charged me $11-something for it. On the lunch menu, it's $10.50 to add scallops. So I could have gotten scallops on my meal for the price that they charged me. I didn't get my soup, and their portions are small. I didn't even finish it. I am never ever coming back. EVER! Totally hate this place! read more

A little more expensive than most places, for smaller portion sizes than most places. My first impression led me to believe that there must be some kind of quality tradeoff that I was about to experience, but sadly, that just wasn't so. My benchmark for any Thai restaurant is Pad Khing, chicken, medium-spicy. A perfect Pad Khing will punch with fresh ginger, have a smack of garlic, a thick-but-not-sticky sauce, and plenty of fresh vegetables. This Pad Khing was anything but. In fact, I could see it served at the hospital cafeteria across the street as "chicken stir-fry". A watery, generic sauce washed over chicken that had been overcooked. A slight bit of bell peppers, even scarcer onion, and ginger that was almost entirely absent. Really depressing. Massaman Curry with chicken was somewhat brighter. The sauce was flavorful, but so watery, it didn't take to the chicken or potato. I prefer to skip white rice, but in their version of Massaman Curry, it's the only way to include the flavor. Thai Fried Rice was a real disappointment. Generic chicken fried rice sans soy sauce, and some crushed red pepper. The presentation with cucumbers was very pretty, but the flavor just wasn't there. It was one of those "we could keep eating it, but why?" affairs. There are a number of decent restaurants offering Asian cuisine within a 5-mile radius. Thai, Chinese, Japanese... you have choices. Thai Basil doesn't need to be one of them. read more

WORST. CUSTOMER. SERVICE. I've always had positive experiences here at Thai Basil...until last night. It was around 830pm and I placed a pick up order for 3 people. We ordered the Spring Roll appetizer, Pad Thai, Bangkok Noodles with Chicken, Pad Bi Kra Pow with Shrimp, and vegetable fried rice. An errand and unforseen mixup in communication ended up with us not actually picking up the food until about 915. As I'm going through the bag, I realize that our pad thai order was incorrect - chicken was added when I didn't ask for meat. In addition to that, the spring roll appetizer was nowhere to be found. Now, if this had been a $20 or $30 order, I could've shrugged my shoulders and said oh well. However, this order was upwards of $50 and when I spent that amount of money, I expect it to be correct. I called the restaurant to inquire about the order and while on the phone I hear in the background the person who took my order bickering with the girl who answered the phone. I was placed on hold for a few moments and a person named Sarah, who I'm assuming was the manager, came on to ask me what was going on. She informed me that I could come back to get the food that was incorrect, but the restaurant was closing in 15 minutes. At this point, it was nearly 10 pm, I was more than 15 minutes away and I had a group of starving people who had spent the entirety of the day painting an apartment - they were just ready to eat. I asked what the alternative option would be and she said that I could get 20% off a pad thai entree and a spring roll when I come back next time. I see two things wrong with this. 1) You're assuming I'm coming back to your restaurant for "next time" and 2) The only solution you could come up with to fix YOUR mistake is to have me come back to buy more food at a discounted price? You do realize you took my money and didn't even give me my food that I ordered and now I have to come back to buy more? How does that even make sense? I am completely appalled at the lack of customer service and I will most definitely NOT be back to this restaurant and I will tell my friends and family to do the same. OH and did I mention, there were no utensils in the bag and we were painting a completely empty apartment....that had no silverware. So it was fun staring at the bag for another hour while we finished painting before we could eat. read more

First when they gave the bill it was without gratuity. Then when we gave local FLAVORS DEAL THEY IMMEDIATELY ADDED 18 PERCENT GRATUTITY!!!! They have programmed their computer that if you give coupon they add 18 percent gratuity. I asked to talk to manager he said that is how their computer works, then do not use the coupon.!! So So rude!! I told them I go to La Marsa and other restaurants, but they do not add gratuity if you use the coupon.But they said that is not the way they work. They said if you use coupon then that is the way they make money. Atleast the manager should have had so much customer service to say that we will take it out this time but from next time we won't do it. But nothing. They are bent on making money on you!! But customer service is terrible!!! We ordered Pad Thai noodles without sprouts, she put sprouts in it and brings the dish. I told her we did not want it, but she was not ready to remake that dish!!! Excellent! Excellent! We were pleasantly surprised with this - nice to see another local gem around the corner! We called before we went and asked if they could accommodate our son's peanut allergy, usually a big concern for a Thai place- but I could tell that staff was trained to understand the nuances, and they assured me he would have a nut free meal. We had the Tum Yum, edemame, chicken friend rice, yellow curry, pad thai, salmon roll- EVERYTHING was great. During our meal, the Manager (owner?) stopped over to make sure everything was good and he was very nice. Wow! It's hidden in a strip mall but the interior is clean and beautifully decorated. I ordered the papaya salad and Panang curry were possibly the best I've had anywhere!
