It was warm out (finally), so we got to sit at an outside table and watch the traffic and the people rush by while we enjoyed a leisurely dinner. Our server was quite knowledgeable about the menu and recommended the Basil Fried Rice. I was looking for something light and summery (while still delightfully spicy) and this did the trick! "Medium spicy" had the perfect level of kick, where I could definitely taste it, but didn't have to take breaks. My first visit to Thai Bloom was when a friend took me to pick up some Miang Kum for a party we were attending in, and she told me that it is a famous Thai street food, and not very common in the US. I fell completely in love with it, and Thai Bloom as well. This time around, I went with the Pad Prik, my wife ordered the Crab Fried Rice, and we split some Seafood Wontons. We were seated outside because the weather was perfect, and 23rd is always good for some people watching, and some boutique shopping and dessert afterward. Our appetizer came with him 3 minutes, hot and fresh, and that filling is so savory and creamy...man. So good! Our entrees came out right on its heels, after only about 10 minutes in total. The Pad Prik sauce was peppery, and just as I like it: extra spicy. The veggies were crisp and fresh. Thai Bloom is probably the best Thai place in Portland. The only restaurant that compares in my opinion is Thai Orchid in Vancouver; they are neck-and-neck. I was impressed they knew what had fish sauce in it and had suggestions for things they could substitute (the sweet chili sauce instead of the peanut sauce) Salad rolls were small but flavorful and good. Pad thai tofu was slightly sweet, with a tangy tamarin flavor - I'd eat that again! Pad see ewe was mild and tasty, with chewy noodles, a little broccoli, carrots and some greens, and no spiciness at all. I used to live in the Pearl and would frequent this restaurant during happy hour. It's a light menu with several yummy options. The restaurant itself isn't much to see. Nothing bad, just your average space. They do have some outdoor seating but it may be available during covid. Anyway, for my most recent visit, I decided to place a to go order from their website of chicken Tom Kha soup - medium spice and some sticky rice. I ordered the large "family" size bowl, which is $14.99. Their website is really easy to use and order from. Once I placed my order, I was given a pick up time, which was within 20 minutes. Once I arrived, my food was waiting for me at the front counter. Super quick. My soup was absolutely delicious. The flavors and the texture of the chicken were both perfect. I really dislike when bad pieces of fatty chicken are used, which was not the case here. My only complaint would be that the soup was super thick. I actually watered it down a bit, but no biggie. Given the large order, & a bit of extra water, this covered 3 meals for me throughout the weekend. Bonus. :). read more

The coconut cream curry with carrots, potatoes, and chicken (I order extra chicken) served over brown rice is comfort food at its best! Flavorful, satisfying, and enough for dinner the next day. Which for me, is one of the best things about Thai food, having it twice! The chicken pot stickers were just ok and seemed smaller than I recall. The Miam Kum, a dish I've had many times in Thailand, ismy favorite way to start a Thai meal. It's a platter consisting of spinach leaf and a variety of fixings - dried shrimp, shallots, peanuts, coconut, dried chili, lime, ginger - so you can build your own perfect bite. For me, this plate represents Thai Food because you get sweet, spicy, sour and salty in one bite, along with several textures. As did my friend who doesn't like coconut. Still good, but not as expected. For dinner we shared three dishes: - Yellow Curry, of course! Was as smooth, creamy, flavorful as expected. Consistently perfection. - Swimming Rama, a first for me but my friends favorite. I went along because I liked the name! It's basically a dish of fresh steamed veggies (broccoli, cabbage, carrots, corn, green beans) with protein, we chose chicken, covered in a thick peanut butter sauce. My friend loved it. For me, it was good, but much better the next day when I added fried chili oil to give this dish some heat. When I make peanut butter sauce, it's always a blend of sweet, spicy, sour and salt. The spice was missing. - Even though brown rice came with the above dishes, we wanted some noodles. I always go with Pad See Wu, wide rice noodles sautéed with egg and veggies, the usual suspects: broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage. This dish was soooo good! My only complaint is that some of the sauces were too sweet; they need heat. For some reason, they didn't have the selection of chili oil on the table and we were so engaged in conversation that we forgot to request it. Food was absolutely amazing. They have great happy hour prices and a very large selection to choose some. I had the Crab Pad Thai, my son had the Green Curry and my other son had the Thai Yen Ta Fo. We were all extremely happy with our choices. The servings are large, the flavors are perfectly balanced out and the service is exceptional. The Thai Yen Ta Fo had a sweet and sour pink broth with prawns, squid, fish balls and other deliciousness. He did say all the foods were rich but it was delicious. We would recommend. We were visiting from out of town - Yelp helped us decide on an earl dinner. We strolled in after a nice afternoon at the Portland Japanese Garden Where we were welcomed by a very nice hostess and seated outside. To our surprise there was an extensive Happy Hour menu, which we took full advantage of. Started with the wontons with crab meat. So good. Followed by chicken satay. Amazing. Funny enough, we've never been inside to eat - but that's just because their food travels so well with delivery and we tend to hermit pretty hard. I love how robust the menu is - they have seasonal dishes that keep things interesting and authentic and you can tell everything is made with love. We always get the Cashew Chicken (at a 2.5 spice) and then rotate between the Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles and Pad See Ew. We also usually add on either the Veggie Spring Rolls or the Fresh Salad Rolls. This place is located in the trendy 23rd district. There are a few free parking spots in the back after 5:30 pm. We visited early (5:30) for dinner and scored one for them. The place has ample seating and is very clean. Happy hour ends at 5:30 which is a bummer because we just missed it. After reading others review about the free coconut ice cream with yelp check-in, my hubby and I both did ours with the server at our table. It is true folks. You get free ice cream at the end of your dinner (if that's when you choose to get it!) They even bring you a warm wash cloth at the end to wipe your sticky paws. I ordered the drunken noodles from all the raved reviews here, in Yelp and I was NOT disappointed. They were delicious and the portion was so big that I had lunch leftovers for the next day, another score...yes!!! But we before we had dinner we ordered their rolls, I call them spring rolls -- you know, the ones wrapped in rice and not deep fried? Ya, those ones. The peanut sauce was perfect, not too thick and not too runny. The rolls themselves were very tasty. They were way smaller in size than any other Thai restaurant I've been but very good. My husband ordered the crispy duck. They misheard him and brought curry duck. I was almost done with my dinner before his meal came back out. The duck is served with a too sweet sauce and some steamed rolls and rice. The duck was too over cooked. I felt bad and kept offering my leftovers but he kept eating his meal. Probably because it was $23. The servers were attentive and courteous as well. I loved this place and will return. I only gave four stars because of my hubby's experience. We went to thai bloom last week, it was around 2:30pm, not much crowded, ordered spicy wings, chicken green curry, tofu drunken noodles and sticky rice. Food was good, restaurant is clean, service is good. Quality of the food was good other than they gave sticky rice in a plastic cover placed inside a small traditional Thai container, rice was hot and placed in plastic, I didn't like it. Quantity is less especially curry way too little. But still recommend it, give it a try, and if it's me definitely avoid the sticky rice because of plastic. read more

Substitutions are not an issue: the server replaced the banana liqueur in the Pineapple Express drink I ordered without any issues when I asked since I do not enjoy bananas. The Pad Thai was decent; first time Thai diners would likely enjoy the dish, but more experienced Thai connoisseurs will have had better elsewhere. The Tom Kha soup seemed overfilled with veggies that were undercooked; it would have almost worked better as a curry. Overall, a fine local chain that is neither exceptional nor disappointing. I stumbled upon Thai bloom while visiting Portland and it's a great place for your Thai food fix. They have a bar code to scan for menu for safety precautions due to Covid 19. We parked on the side street because parking is limited. We tried a variety of dishes including the following: Crying tiger - The meat was a little over cooked. I did enjoy their homemade dipping sauce that comes a variety of spices. Thai noodle boat - The broth was perfect with lots of beef tendons and meatballs. It comes with a side of bean sprouts and basil. Duck curry - very rich creamy sauce with bold flavors and good variety of vegetables inside. A nice medium kick that hits you at the end. Crab pad Thai - This is so good and a nice change from your typical pad thai with good amount of crab meat. Be sure give it a nice mix! Fish on fire - A great presentation and the fish was very tender halibut. It comes with very in a curry sauce. Fried string bean - A nice kick deep fried green beans with chili peppers inside. Came here a month ago with some friends and sat in their outdoor dining area with table and chairs close to the street and it made me feel like I was back in Italy. They have a QR code at the table that you can scan to get your menu directly on your phone which is convenient and safe for COVID. Our waitress was friendly and attentive throughout our dining experience. For our appetizer we ordered some veggie spring rolls (pricey for $9 and only 3 pieces and the Crying Tiger (grilled flank steak) with a tamarind dipping sauce which was delicous. For our entrees we went with the Spicy Chicken with Basil, classic Phad Thai, the Panang Curry and Yellow curry. Overall, for the quality of food Thai Bloom is great! I like to meet friends here to eat first, then head to the gelato shop by the metal pig for some dessert, or visit the tea shop for some delicious Chai for no wait/casual hang out. The portion size was typical in comparison to other Thai places I've eaten at, but the flavors were nothing special, yet their prices are higher! I was with a larger party so we ate family style, sharing all our appetizers and dishes. There was nothing memorable except the waiter's recommendation of Tom Yum with noodles because the noodles were so overcooked and mushy, they couldn't even be picked up. When it was time to pay, the waiter was flustered over us wanting to split the bill. He kept saying, "The gratuity?! Who's going to take care of the gratuity?" It was like, "Dude! Chill out. I feel like pad Thai at a Thai restaurant is the baseline for quality and theirs does not disappoint (we are a big fan of their crab pad Thai). It's always hit or miss at Thai restaurants for that, so I was happy to see explicitly vegan items on the menu. We ordered dinner through doordash and it was here in a ridiculously quick amount of time. Everything is delicious! So fresh and amazing. Only thing I would do different is order more spice -- I ordered a 3 with my drunken noodles and it could make due with a bit more. I love Thai food and I think I have found my new usual to go to.
