We came on a Friday night and it was dead. We had the whole restaurant to ourself, which was very peaceful but also worrisome that there were no other customers. We ordered the cheese puff, chicken wings, and tom kha soup as appetizers. The cheese puff were okay, the outside the wonton was warm, but the filling with cream cheese was extremely cold which caught me off guard. The wings were perfectly crispy and juicy, but could use more seasoning. It felt rather bland, but was easily fixed with the sweet chili dipping sauce they provided. Tom kha soup was great. No complaints on that. Our server asked us if we wanted some jasmine rice to go with our wings and soup, and we agreed. The texture of their rice was absolutely perfect. That's how rice should always be made. For our entree we ordered the curry bowl salmon and it was almost amazing. The flavors were great, but we were not asked how spicy we wanted the dish, and it didn't taste spicy as all. On the menu there's a fire symbol next to the dish and that was disappointed to not have it as spicy as we would like. The presentation was very beautiful but it was so little curry. I could tell it tasted wonderful, but it wasn't enough to truly appreciate it. The salmon was seasoned well, but too dry for my liking. The garlic fried rice was perfect. If there's one thing this place knows how to do well is making perfect rice. The flavors for the garlic rice was simple, but amazing due to the texture. It really helped highlight the light garlic flavors. When we got the check I wasn't too happy that they charged us $2 for the small side of jasmine rice. I was under the impression it was complimentary since our server offered it to us. Overall solid Thai food, but I wouldn't go out of my way to downtown to come here since there's no free parking nearby. read more

The salmon curry is fantastic. The salmon is almost cooked to perfection and has great seasoning. The red curry complements the salmon well with a depth of flavor coming from the many spices and flavorings like fish sauce, galangal, and garlic in a traditional red curry, rounded out with coconut milk and seasoned beautifully. read more

The food is excellent in this high quality downtown restaurant located less than 100 feet off of Main Street. Great place to bring a date. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I had an overall nice experience here. Came here after not being selected for Jury duty and ordered the Pad Kee Moa, or drunken noodles with beef (the lunch special). The meal started with miso soup, which was very good, nothing extraordinary but I enjoyed it a lot! The salad was very fresh, the dressing was a ginger dressing that had a hint of mustard(turmeric). The dressing seemed like it was manufactured and out of the bottle, and I could've done without but can't complain about the very simple salad. The appetizer was a very yummy egg roll! Not greasy, and half of it drenched in yummy sweet sour sauce. Definitely crunchy and appetizing. I would recommend this! The main course, pad kee moa, was overall good! It didn't have tomatoes like some places do which I consider a positive thing! The noodles were sosooo perfect, fresh and melted in my mouth. I just wish there was more noodles haha plenty of meat for this dish, and fresh basil and red/green peppers. If your a fan of fried onion, this is ideal because this dish has a ton of it!! And it's fried egg rich as well. I wasn't asked about spice level but the seasoning was PERFECT; a balance of savory and spicy! I wouldn't be craving this place or be going out of my way to come back but I'm glad I tried it!! Went for lunch, and so glad we did! Their lunch prices and plate sizes are great! I had the ginger chicken lunch plate, it came with egg rolls, soup and salad for appetizers! The egg rolls were sooo good!!! I will definitely order extra next time! The soup and salad were tasty as well. Our group split the mango sticky rice and it was amazing! Finding a restaurant that can serve a large group and do it well is hard to find. We arranged a few days in advance for our group of 45 FIRST robotics students from San Jose CA to visit the Thai Cafe on a Wednesday evening. When we arrived at 8pm, the tables were set and the food was prepared and ready to be served as a buffet. The food was excellent and ample, and the service handled our large group without delays. If we qualify for the robotics championships next year, we will certainly be returning to the Thai Cafe for our team dinner! The curries are really good and the veggie lovers entree I ordered had just the right amount of spice. I found the service to be really good--I was here a little early and the evening diners began filling up the tables about the time I was finishing--but even then the service was courteous and conscientious. The ambience was absolutely perfect--caught up somewhere between casual and classy, open and intimate. Finally, I thought the prices were reasonable for typical urban dining--appetizer, filling entree, and hot green tea for around $20. Granted, I wasn't very impressed with their Shrimp Fried Rice, but a sizzling hot serving of their Tofu Pad Kee Mao turned things around rather well. A pretty solid Thai restaurant to visit with friends when you're hanging out downtown. Generous portions (or just enough if you're really hungry during dinner), friendly service, and good food for reasonable prices. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao with chicken, which I would highly recommend! It's savory and my ideal comfort food. (I like spicing mine up with chili sauce.) Fairly new restaurant at the end of Main street next to the UHD garage. There's no clear marking for the restaurant but you can easily spot the blue double door entrance. Still in the soft opening phase since the full menu is not in service yet. Modern downtown small joint. Classy vibes but decent prices. Came for lunch and ordered the Pad Kee Mao with tofu. Came with salad, soup, and egg roll. The salad sauce was amazing- not soggy or heavy on the peanut flavor. Soup was a higher grade egg drop and egg roll wasn't oily. The Pad Kee Mao was not oily either and was slightly spicy-perfect mild level. Loved the crunch on the fried tofu. Overall- much better than your strip mall/food court Thai place but not quite on Thai gourmet level. Interested in seeing the other options-may change my mind about the place. I live downtown and we saw this little hole in the wall, and by the yelp reviews we decided to stop on a monday at 4pm, not crowded, they sat us right away. The menu board is very beautifully made, we ordered hor green tea, coconut chicken soup and gyoza to start. The green tea is amazingly good, the also give you a little cup of honey and refill your tea water if needed. The soup was really good too, the gyozas were super good and lightly fried. For entrees we ordered healthy fried rice and spicy garlic shrimp, BOTH DELICIOUS. Overall service and food quality amazing, prices are duable. read more

So my go-to Thai joint (Erawan on San Felipe & Sage) bit the dust and I've been on the prowl for a suitable replacement. As I was downtown at dinner time, I gave Thai Cafe a shot. I had to circle the block a few times before I found a place to park and I almost walked right past the unassuming front door. The place was all but empty, with one other diner wrapping up his meal. The dining room was spotless and tastefully decorated and the ambient music selection was reminiscent of a late night Cinemax movie soundtrack. I'm one of those people who tend to order the same thing every time and since Erawan closed, I've craved good prik king and a good tom yum. The tom yum came out first - there's only one size - and it was delicious. My only improvement is subjective and would be to halve the amount of onion. I ordered the shrimp version and it was near perfect. The entree came well before I finished my soup, but was still hot enough for my taste. The pork prik king was an ample amount. The waiter offered to bring sauce to adjust the spiciness to my taste, but I found it hot enough without the need to add to it. The flavor was almost exactly what I wanted. I despise bell pepper and this dish had red and green pepper slivers, which weren't in the menu description, and I had to pick the meat and green beans out from among them. My iced tea glass never stayed empty more than a minute, which I like, as Thai food makes me thirsty. The staff included one waiter and the owner/chef, plus one guy who never came out from behind the counter. The owner and waiter were conversational without being annoying. The owner even asked for my permission to sit at my table while she showed me photos on her phone of how the dining room looked when she bought the place. We talked about their lack of marketing and I offered a couple of suggestions. I'd really like this place to be successful. There's nothing worse than falling in love with a restaurant only to have it close. In sum, I'm beyond glad to have found a new spot for excellent Thai and it will be in my regular rotation. read more

After an afternoon of watching a documentary on Thai street Food I quickly built up an appetite some Tum Yum. After searching for Thai Restaurants near me I found Thai Cafe. It seemed like a relatively new restaurant. After reading the feedback from their customer I decided to check it out, plus it was a ten minute walk from where I lived which was very convenient for my wife and I. The plants outside of the restaurant are beautiful and instantly put you in a great mood. We were greeted by our waiter who showed us to our table. The food was delicious! Great food. I love the red curry with shrimp. Three stars because of the service. Pre-pandemic service was so nice and polite. They were very courteous. It was almost as if they celebrated your presence and business. The chef himself would come out of the kitchen to check on you. I finally went back a week ago and they have a lot new faces. Amazing Thai food in downtown Houston. I had the spicy butter garlic shrimp (spicy shrimp with a sweet mild garlic flavor with spaghetti style noodle) and my friend had the Chicken Pad C Ew (flat noodle with broccoli and egg). Both were delicious. Hot tea was nice on a cold evening. Lightning and music with very mellow. Decor is a work in progress but didn't affect my experience. Staff were attentive but no one else was there. Seems to be off everyone's radar maybe because downtown Houston doesn't have that big of a foodie scene , but I will definitely be back. read more
