I wouldn't have expected to get good Thai this far north, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and the prices. Being from Chicago, there are so many Thai places that to stay in business, you have to be good. I would rate Thai Cafe right up there with my neighborhood joint. In a small storefront, Thai Cafe cranks out rice and noodle dishes as mild or spicy as you like. With a complimentary hot and sour or egg drop soup, the meal was more than enough for me. The food is amazing. I am from LA and grew up eating Thai food, and this is as good as I have eaten. The service was good and the food seasoned right on point. I read with humor the one post about Pad Thai with chicken and the description, knowing Thai food I would bet he ordered curry chicken, not Pad Thai and the waitress is actually a waiter, maybe he is totally confused. Thai Cafe is what you would expect from your average small ethnic restaurant in most college towns or medium sized cities. The actual restaurant is brightly decorated and the dining room offers limited seat. The menu is comprehensive and I have never had a bad dish... even when they accidentally gave me the wrong item in a to-go order. It is a solid choice for a good, quick meal (dining in or take out). Well, the recent posts are pretty spot on. This place could use a face-lift and some decent help. We had to wait to sit down because 6 tables hadn't been cleaned. They could use some good help. We had to ask the server several times to bring us eating utensils. There were 3 of us and I asked for some chopsticks and he brought just 1? He brought our appetizer soup, but didn't bring my wife's soup which was a separate order to our entree. She was starving. He thought he would bring her soup with our main dishes. Go figure... We had to go to other tables to keep getting napkins as he ended up talking to a customer that he hadn't seen in a long time. Now the food.. Well after we got our entrees he brought us the wrong one. Instead of fixing the problem, he showed us the menu to day that we asked for P8 instead of P9. This guy is clearly not meant for this job... Though small, the restaurant has a comfortable and appealing feel. More importantly, the food is quite delicious. I've had the Chicken Peanut Curry Pad Thai, the Chicken Yellow Curry, and the Tom Kha. They are all very good with just enough spice to provide a kick without overwhelming the other great flavors. The portions are also incredibly large and you really can walk in, look at the menu, order, and be pulling away in your car in less than 15 minutes. I recommend this to anyone. read more

I simply cannot understand why Thai Cafe has a good rating. I've probably eaten there six times and it isn't at all good. Compared to other Thai food at many places around the country, it simply isn't in the same class. I've had curries, noodle dishes, stir fries and soups, and nothing is particularly good. Maybe people keep coming back because it's the only game in town. Even simple Thai dishes such as the chicken and coconut soup falls flat with way too much lime and shrimp that taste strongly of iodine. I give up. read more

I have to say that I don't have high hopes for "ethnic" food in Northern Michigan but Ive lowered my standards in order to find something that sort of resembles the cuisine I'm looking for when I get tired of my burger, fried, or overly chic attempts at fine dining. Id just like something decent! so I gave THAI CAFE a try. The Pad Kee Mao ( typically a wider fried rice noodle with red peppers, carrots, sometimes green beans, bean sprouts, always basil and spice, often tomatoes ) was basically was a GIANT PILE OF SLOPPY RAMEN NOODLES.( but worse) no vegetables, no basil, i saw zero chili flakes.. no anything but.... A GIANT PILE OF SLOPPY BROWN NOODLES. My advice: Save yourself the 10 dollars you'd pay for this brown sweaty mass of garbage and go get a frozen thai entree from Meijer and dose it up with some rooster sauce. add a couple veggies and call it a day. oh and make a day trip to probably Grand Rapids to eat some edible thai. maybe? amen. read more

This is not great Thai food, by any means. But it's certainlthe best Thai food you'll find in Traverse City, it's cheap, the staff is very friendly, and the food is tasty. We were introduced to it by friends who live in TC, and we've made it a regular lunch stop on our visits since then. read more

The food was good not the best and the egg drop soup is not really egg drop. Its basically cabbage soup with some pieces of egg in it. And I know they where busy but waited forever to get served and the waitress forgot to give us our drinks and spring roll. Your best bet is to order take out if u can or have lots of time cause they dont have a lot of servers. read more

For Traverse City ... by far the best Thai Food in town ... we have several great oriental restaurants in the area but this is best for Thai. It is inexpensive good portions and served to your choice of flavor. I personally love Curry Chicken & lots of Vegetables very HOT ... and they never disappoint. Caution ... HOT means SPICY ... so be ready! If your not a Thai curry fan, lots of other options. It has small seating has good carry out, but is also worth the wait! read more

My husband and I love Thai food, but there's no decent place in Ann Arbor that we know of, so when we learned that there's one in Traverse City, we had to try it out during our stay there. First of all, the place is tiny! And when we went (for dinner), there was a big group of maybe 20 people occupying most of the place, so instead of having to cramp ourselves with a cranky baby, we decided to get take-out. I had curry fried rice, my husband the yellow curry, and my mother-in-law, pad Thai. I had mine mild, and my husband had the medium heat. The portions are huge, and for the price, it's a good value. I liked my fried rice: a bit spicy, but not too much (but I can't take any heat at all), they had at least 10 good-size shrimps and good amount of vegetables. My husband's curry, he said, was a bit too spicy, but it has strange sweetness to it, which he didn't expect to have in a curry. My mother-in-law's pad Thai, according to her, also was too sweet for what it is, so for that, I deduct a star. Overall, we liked this place, and we may go back, after trying out oh so many restaurants there. read more

Stopped in during our weekend visit for dinner. Pad Thai, crispy egg rolls, egg drop soup, summer rolls and masaman curry were all ordered. Everything was delicious, hot and perfectly seasoned. The only thing I missed was carrots in my masaman. Other than that it was great. The waiter was friendly and attentive. Would definitely return next time we're in town. read more

A pleasant surprise in Traverse City .. Thai Cafe had plenty of options on the menu for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. On my lunch visit we had the Peanut Curry Pad Thai and Gang Kali. Both dishes were great but the peanut curry pad thai was hands down my favorite. The vegetable spring rolls were fried but quite tasty as well. The only dish I didn't care for was the egg drop soup .. it was bland but somehow salty at the same time. And the service was great!! read more

This place is great. It's tiny so take out might be a better option. The waiter was great and very helpful even though the place was packed. The portions are HUGE! One entree will easily feed 3 people. They do really mean spicy when you see the little peppers on the menu. We will definitely be back. read more

Ordered for take out, order was done timely(15 min) overall high price for quality of food. Peanut pad Thai was okay; Ramen noodles in cayenne. My girlfriend had the sweet sour chicken, chicken is good though asked to sub lo mien noodle from standard rice. Received wonton noodles instead. The crab Rangoon were over cooked. As of today (June 16, 2019) the Thai Cafe is, without question, the worst Thai restaurant at which I have ever eaten. Every dish was terrible. The service was also bad. I don't know how this place continues to exist-- it should not. read more

Great Thai for the price. We get Thai Cafe as take out all the time. Awesome red curry and pad Thai. Really can't beat the price for the quality of food and the portion size. Have I had better, more elaborate Thai? Sure, but it was $75/ person... Not less than $15 for a meal that will provide leftovers. All and all, Highly recommended. read more

I really really love Thai food! It's one of my faves and finding authentic tasting Thai can be an exhausting affair. So I was pleasantly surprised to find decent Thai 5 minutes from my house. Kinda cramped inside but perfect for take-out (which comes up fast and is always warm). The portions are huge and easily serve two people. I normally get sick off Asian-cuisine but I've never gotten sick from Thai-Cafe. Very average Thai food, really just one step above your typical Chinese joint. I would probably get the Pad Thai again, but the curry dish was disappointing, skimpy on the meat portion. Also had a beef stirfry dish that was skimpy on the meat portion and the sauce was sickeningly sweet. It's the only facsimile of Thai food TC has to offer.
