I must confess! I was skeptical about eating here. We're from LA and have some of the best Thai food in Hollywood (Thai Town). We're in town visiting for a few days and found this restaurant on yelp and Coconut soup sounded great because it was raining. We ended up ordering more than coconut soup! The asparagus with chicken is divine and so flavorful. The green curry was outstanding and literally flavors burst in your mouth. The coconut soup with chicken was absolutely amazing! This is my favorite spot in Merced. I eat here at least 2 times a week and always enjoy what I am given. The food is consistently yummy and the staff is always just as friendly. A nice helping of Pad Thai which will easily feed you and a friend will only cost about 10.75 and is definitely worth the price. Their curry options are also delicious but I would definitely go with the lunch special options for them because rice is included in the price. I went back again after I left Yosemite. Told my partner that this is the Best Thai Food I've ever had in US (at least comparing California and Maryland). This time, we had the tom yam, Yam Woon Seng (glass noodle salad), pad thai and roast duck with spinach. The tom yam is really good. Tasted fresh and you can see the fresh ingredients they use. The soup came in a steam boat (hot pot) pot. It was more than many bowls. 3 adults had 2 servings and we packed the remainder in a big tub. The roast duck was pretty good too. The duck didn''t exactly taste very fresh (the meat) but the skin was nice and crispy. The spinach was very good. Overall, it went very well with the rice. The Yam woon seng was a very large portion. They used the same big square plate. It was double the portion you would get anywhere.. even in Bangkok or Phuket. If you like it spicy, think you need to tell them cos our wasn't spicy at all. But again, generous servings of ingredients. Our order of 4 entrees (non lunch specials) and 1 thai iced tea came to $43 (before tips). Fantastic deal. Its a pity that they are so far away. Of course, we left with 1 more thai iced tea and 1 thai iced coffee. read more

Service: 3/5 Typical service for an Asian restaurant, where it is maintained lightly until you ask for the extra water that is needed from the burning papaya salad or to quench your thirst from a hang over. Pad Thai: 4/5 The Pad Thai is relatively sweet here (sometimes way toooooo sweet, that you can get a tooth ache), but with a perfect mixture of their chili oil, a pinch of black pepper, a squirt of Sriracha, and a dust of red chili flakes it can be rather delightful. I would much rather get the Pad Thai from Thai Cuisine II in North Merced where their is slightly more flavor and is less sweet. Pho: 5/5 The pho here is quite delicious and delectable (last time I had it, it was quite salty). It provides the perfect blend of flavors. The broth is a richer brown and not clear like other restaurants in the area. If you are Vegan, this is as close as you will come to a genuine, warm, and tasty Vegan meal here in Merced. Their Vegan version of their Spring Rolls with a substitution of tofu vs. beef, chicken, or pork is really good, and tasty. It comes with a delicious plum sauce, but you can ask them for a substitution of peanut sauce if you prefer. Since the nearest real Vegan cafes are in Capitola or way down in southern California, I highly recommend saving the gas and eat here. I think you'll like it. read more

Hungry for Thai food as we drove around and found this little place on 16th street in Merced. Thai Cuisine was open and parking was easy, right up front. There were a few patrons inside and two young lovely ladies greeted us at the door and showed us our table. I could see from where I'm sitting that the cook must be the matriarch and is using all her own culinary knowledge of spices and ingredients and savory broths. We ordered fried tofu that came out so deliciously Golden fried with a touch of that sweet peanut sweet sauce, 4 rice sheet spring rolls that were stuffed with an assortment of chicken, prawns, lettuce, bean sprouts and a special spring roll sweet sauce. For entrees we had the Rad Na, wide rice noodles and broccoli in a gravy sauce, and a cup of scrumptious sweet jasmine white rice, and the Pad Khing Tofu, a stir fry tofu chunks in ginger, garlic, mushrooms and onions. I admire the lady as she definitely knows how to bring out the authentic tastes of these dishes. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they have new ownership a couple of months ago.. My brother had told me that, and he said their pho is really good and so I had to go try.. I'm not a fan of Thai pho but it was quite good! I ordered the combo pho and the broth was pretty damn good! But I came here just recently last week, and the broth was off! It was too salty. Not only that, but I found a hair in my pho. I didn't say anything because i didn't want to make a scene and ruin anyone's appetite. Consistency is key!!! If I come here the first time and it was good, I expect it to be just as good or even better the next time I come!... TBH I was a bit disappointed. One of my favorites restaurants in Merced. I have been here more times than I can count and have always been happy with my experience! The parking lot is compact. The restaurant is small and many times full, there aren't any elaborate decorations...but if you those things don't bother you, you're in good hands! First of all, I just want to give props to the service there! The staff has always been wonderful and friendly. They have always been good on checking in to make sure everything is satisfactory to my expectations. It seems like there's always a bunch of people working in the kitchen, which is great because they always get the order out to you in 5-10 minutes tops! This is good if you're on a short lunch break. Was very excited about trying this place but was disappointed. I love Thai food especially Pad Thai. Both my friend and I ordered it with the prawns but the sauce they used was not Pad Thai sauce, it was tangy, tasted like orange chicken. Thank God we had also ordered some spring rolls. These were good and huge. We took some home. My brother ordered the yellow chicken curry, this was pretty good and spicy. This dish saved the night, there was enough food for all 3 of us since we couldn't eat the Pad Thai or the prawns that came with it (the prawns had no taste). They don't have an alcohol license and would lot let us bring some wine in even though we offered to pay a corkage fee. The wine would have probably helped us to drown some of that Pad Thai taste down. read more

We eat there every week or two and we will probably continue to do that until we move away... What a fantastic find! Next time I am driving to Yosemite, I will make sure to include a stop at this gem on my trip. The food is fantastic and I was delighted with everything I tried. There are many dishes you would not find on a run-of-the-mill Thai place, and a really interesting selection of soups. Authentic, bright vibrant flavors, with a great chef To challenge and excite your palate, order the som tum, Laos style. It's made less sweet than Thai style green papaya salad, with blah rah (an unfiltered fish sauce...think of it as an unfiltered sake, more flavor!) and without peanuts. It's got some heat to it, but was so yummy I couldn't stop eating it. I also had a fried tofu appetizer, tossed in sweet soy and served on lettuce. It provided a great sweet balance for the som tum and was crispy on the outside and steaming on the inside. And then my soup came to the table and I was floored: bean thread noodle soup with chicken and pork, black mushrooms and spinach. The broth had such a depth of flavor and the textures of the noodles and the mushrooms were so enticing that I couldn't stop eating it until I was uncomfortably full. I could have just ordered this and be writing the enthusiastic review. I ordered enough food for at least two people, but there were so many fun options on the menu, I couldn't narrow it down to just one. I ended up taking half of everything to go, but left so happy! The service here was attentive (they probably thought I was nuts for ordering so much food solo) and both the owner and her husband were present in the dining room. The dining room itself is nothing special, but it gives off that special hole-in-the-wall feeling that I dig. I got to chat with the husband and found out they bought the place from her sister (owns Thai Cuisine II) last month. I hope to get to enjoy it again soon! read more

SO delicious! Tiny dining room but very clean, and you can see right into the kitchen (which I like). A super nice waitress, she was great with the kids. Best green curry that either my husband or I have ever had! The orange chicken was on special so we tried it, it was supposed to just be for the kids but we all loved it and just couldn't get enough. I also asked for pineapple fried rice, dunno if its on the menu or not but she said "sure we can do something like that" and came out with the worlds best fried rice! Full of shrimp, chicken, egg, veggies, some sort of sweet sausage, and tons of pineapple. $33 including tip and we all left stuffed and happy. Everything they cook here is divine. So much flavour that keeps you coming for more. My family and I came here after visiting my brother who goes to UC Merced and we were pleasantly surprised. The shrimp spring rolls, Tom yum, drunken noodles, and Thai rice were cooked to perfection. If you're a coffee aficionado like me you will not be disappointed with their Thai coffee. It baffles me that this place has much better reviews than TCII. It's not bad, by any means, but it's smaller, not as clean/new looking, and the food, IMO, is less refined than Thai Cuisine II's. The food here is not bad, by any means, and everything is decently priced. I stopped here again on my way through town, mostly because I cannot find Crispy Tofu the way Thai Cuisine makes it. This time I had Spicy String Beans and my friend had Yellow Curry with Chicken. I've already commented on the quality of the food in my previous review. And, it's still good! Plus, they don't charge extra for rice like many restaurants are starting to do. It's no surprise to me that in this down-turned economy, when so many restaurants are struggling to stay alive, Thai Cuisine was filled with people who came here for Saturday lunch. What was a surprise is that they have opened another restaurant on the east side of town, Thai Cuisine II. The waitress told me that the second restaurant caters to 'American tastes' while this one caters to Asians. I'll have to try out Thai Cuisine II to discover the difference. I use to come here all the time when I was younger. This is the first place I went to for Pho back in the days. It is still as good as ever. Very tiny, but the food is great! Pho is one size, papaya salad Lao-style is BOMB, spring rolls are good, and the last time I was there (a few months ago) they had free refill thai tea special. The pad thai is really good here as well, not overly sweet and saucy. A lot of similar Asian/Thai cuisine restaurants have opened in the last decade, but this is still one that I highly recommend. I believe this Thai Cuisine makes the Lao version of papaya salad only, not the Thai Cuisine 2 across down, since they don't have the padek to make the liquid dark. By far my favorite Thai restaurant in Merced. I've been dozens of times, and have always been completely satisfied! Yum! Its a very relaxed atmosphere, not alot of, razzle dazzling, but the food speaks for itself, I personally love all the curry dishes, I am vegetarian, and they have tons of options for me to choose from... all this talk is making me hungry, I think I may just stop in before work! Ambience: Restaurant is the size of a master bedroom but the decor is plain and simple, which is something I don't mind. The menu, chairs, and tables were clean. The only thing that was off was their music. You never know what to expect. One day you enter, you hear pop music and then another day you hear country. Music plays a big role in the overall experience and ambience of the restaurant. When I entered the restaurant, I expected to have a full on experience of the thai cuisine, art/music, and culture. It did almost that. Price: The price was average. Expect to spend approximately $20-$30 for a full on meal, including appetizers and and dessert. But if you're just ordering an entree, expect to spend about $10 - $20. Food Quality: Mediocre and NOT CONSISTENT. If you're from a big city filled with many great restaurants, this is a restaurant you'll claim Mediocre at Best. But if you're from Merced or from smaller cities with not so many varieties, it is considered Good. I ordered the Pho. The broth was nice, not sure if they put msg or beef flavoring packets. The quality of the meat was not great. They were tough and rubbery. Some portions were burnt or had the appearance of being frost bitten. Quantity and quality are not consistent. Basil and beansprout were rotten. Very little care was given to the basil and beansprout. Not given enough attention to details. Every little details regarding to quality and quantity matters. Service: I tested their service by going in as a customer who doesn't want to be bothered. To give the hint, I put on my headphones and occupied myself with watching shows on my iphone. The servers did not get the point and continually bothered me over and over again, asking if everything was okay and if I needed anything. Service was okay. The servers need to understand their customers and know how to give their customers the distance without coming off as annoying. This is not the place for an angry person or a person having a bad day to go to, sadly. Servers need to pay more attention to their customer and pick up details of what their customer wants. Service needs improving. Overall thoughts: It was okay. Not amazing. Just another typical, average restaurant. I would come here again because they have potential to be better.
