Best Thai in Des Moines! We've been eating here for years and years...the healthy rolls are wonderful, as are the curries. The tom kha soup is AMAZING. The pad thai is not quite as good as others I've had, but there is enough on the menu that it doesn't matter. As others have said, the spiciness level can vary from day to day. But that just makes it more fun! ;-) Yum. We never miss it when we're back through town! read more

My husband and i were in the mood for something different that we had never tried. I had read reviews about this place and they were hit and miss. Some said the service was bad, others said it was good, etc. But we went on a Friday around 6ish and sat right down. The waitress was very nice and gave us about 30 minutes to look over the menu. We orded the drunken noodles and veggie delight. My hubby got the noodles with Iowan heat and they were HOT!!!!!!!! Use caution with that heat...taste was good but the heat was HOT!!!. Thai Flavors! It had been 3-4 years since I ate at this hidden gem of a restaurant in Des Moines,IA. Make sure you hit them up for cheap lunch prices and show up before 2! We started with the vegetable fried spring rolls- the dipping sauce was sweet and sour and was a good compliment to the rolls. We both went in on the Pad Thai, chicken for me and fried tofu for my date! The spice range is from 1-6. We both chose to do 3 but agreed next time we will crank it up a notch. The food came out fast, piping hot and in huge portions! The food ultimately was delicious and we had plenty to take home for a round two later. This restaurant was a class act. Very kind and quick service, and the food was excellent. I ordered the yellow curry fried rice and it was delicious, just the right amount of sweetness and spiciness. I had mixed feelings about the place. The service is great, but the food failed. I had the Pad Thai and it had a fishy taste. My spouse had the asparagus dish and the sesame flavor over took the dish. We also ordered the vegetable tempura and it was just okay, I personally believe that avocado should not be fried. Pretty Impressed with its Pad Thai. I went there once, and really like the atmosphere. The waitress speaks Thai language, which make the whole places look so authentic. I've ordered also the sticky rice of mango, it's really good. Tom Kha soup is a bit little portion for only 2 people, but it tastes nice. I ordered drunken noodles and a thai basil stir fry. I was not impressed with either. I did enjoy the interior of the restaurant though. Both dishes tasted fine and had that zing to it, but the way it was prepared is not what I am used to. I know this place is in the middle of Iowa and access to fresh rice noodles may not be cost effective. The drunken noodles I had that evening was prepared from the dried packaged rice noodles. The thai basil stir fry kha phrao was watery but tasted find. It would taste better if there was a little gravy to it. Next time, I will avoid these dishes. In writing this review, I compared this place to Tasty Thai near the Kansas City airport. That place had the best drunken noodles I've had in the USA. Amazing given the location. The service here is terrible. My company wanted to order dinner for 5:30 delivery from the restaurant for around 10 people. We called before their 2:00pm close time to allow ample time for them to prepare for our large order and was told that we had to wait until 5:00pm to place a dinner delivery order. We called back at 4:45 hoping to get the order in somewhat early so we could make our 5:30 delivery and was once again told that dinner orders are NOT accepted until after 5:00. Thai Flavors has an awesome flare for food but if you want location or decor you may try some place else--But if you are like me once you taste the food you will care little about where you are located. It is known for Tom Kah Kai (sp?) soup. It is a nice blend of sweet, spicy, creamy and a touch of sour by mixing Lemon grass, spices, mushrooms, your choice of meat (we like chicken or seafood), coconut milk and a hint of lime and sweetness, Not for the weak but soon will be a fave for those who enjoy a unique blend of flavors on their palate. Many dishes can be customized to your taste and are made fresh. They offer tame dishes and also dishes for the daring. The wait-staff has always been helpful with the menu making suggestions. If this is your first time, I recommend asking your server for assistance. The wait-staff varies from attentive to over-whelmed. Most of time we do have excellent service but if things are busy and staff is limited it can get a little slow. I would have given them 5 stars but lately they have changed some of our favorite recipes and hope they will return to the "old" way soon. read more

This has been my favorite thai restaurant in des moines for years, Though for the past couple years I feel like the inconsistency regarding spiciness levels makes me has a time to bring friends there. I really enjoyed hot food but more than a couple times a friend has ordered something with 0, 1, or 2 stars and has been unable to eat it (at least not comfortably). That said, there are times that I've ordered 4 or 5 star and it's been very mild. I think there's just a little too much inconsistency between chefs. read more

This is such an excellent Thai restaurant, especially for those of who live on the South/East sides of Des Moines. The menu is huge and the spice level in many of the dishes can be customized to your tastes. The noodle dish portions are so big they can easily be shared between two people, leaving room for some sushi. The menu is the same as Cool Basil, which we used to trek out to West Des Moines for before we discovered Thai Flavors only a few minutes away. It is perfect for dine-in, with a pretty and quiet interior that you would not expect from the outside. It is also perfect for takeout, with quick and easy service. Highly recommended! read more

In a little strip mall a block from where I grew up. I'm 3rd generation white middle America so I don't know authentic Thai... I just know what I like. Love their Panang Curry. Perfect. I've seen many recipes online that don't include a ground roasted peanut or cashew, and then some that do. I always appreciate that additional flavor when having Chicken Panang wherever I'm dining. Lunch portion is more than enough to each half and take the rest for next day's lunch. I prefer sticky rice and order it... but I find I need a double order to have enough as the portion is smaller than I've had elsewhere. Sometimes I just use the steamed. The appetizers were all fine... I've had better satay and fried spring rolls but I never mind ordering and sharing with the table. Plus I love dipping fried rolls into the Panang sauce. A friend always orders their Garlic & Peppers with chicken, broccoli, and extra cabbage and raves about it. The place is busy during lunch. I've never had to wait for a table but they do use every inch of space and have seemed to found that balance between enough seating without having vast vacant sections. Just don't go here to secretly gossip without the diners next to you hearing about your misdeeds. The staff is fine. Not exceptional. Sometimes too busy for the numbers in the seats. I've never felt any neglect was intentional and servers are usually smiling and polite. I feel weird giving a 4 star having sample so little of their menu but if you like a yummy Panang and are on the east side of town and need a "fix" Thai Flavors delivers. read more

My grandmother is Thai so I am very picky when it comes to Thai resturants. I can say that this is by far the closest thing to my grandmas cooking. Very authentic and elegant to boot. Good portions, a bit pricy but for those who love Thai food it doesn't matter. read more

We just had Thai Flavors cater Pad Thai and Fried Rice for our son's graduation reception. The entire experience was exceptional. The food was fantastic, they provided so many extras (limes, spice, sauce, cookies, etc), and they were great to work with. I would use them again in a heartbeat. BAD SERVICE. The food is acceptable, but the service was not. I usually order lunch from here and have minimal problems. But recently i ordered lunch, and then I asked her to read back the order for me, she did, and it was wrong, so I had to ask her to fix it, and I confirmed with her that the order was correct. Well when I received my order, it was completely wrong. I looked at the ticket she wrote out and she did not listen to anything I said about my order. So I then called them back, and informed her that she had messed up my order, she did not say anything to me, she was quiet for about a minute or two, and I HAD to ASK her MYSELF if she was going to do anything to make up for the mistake, or even just to apologize. She still didn't answer me. And then she proceeded to hang up the phone on me. out of anger I called her back and she said that she did not mean to hang up on me....And I asked her if she would do anything about the mess up, and she replied with "NO" and I asked her why, and she told me that the kitchen was closed at 2:00. The kitchen closing at 2:00 has nothing to do with bad customer service right? So does that mean she can't apologize for screwing my order if the kitchen is closed?? I asked her if I could speak to the boss or anyone in charge, and she said that there was no boss, and that she was the only one working. I was completely insulted, she was so rude, and had the nastiest attitude!!! I will have to stop in and speak to the boss before I ever order from here again. read more

I was in there about 6 months ago and the service was awful. We were hungry for Thia food today and so I thought I would give them another chance. I called and ordered my food specifically letting the lady know that I could not handle spicy food so I wanted just enough for flavoring. I also told her how my son wanted his food cooked. It was wrong. Not only was it wrong but when I called to talk to her she said I never told her how to make the food. She tried to argue with me. I was just going to see about having it remade but there was no way after the way I was treated. Then she said she would void the order and send someone to get the food from my home. I told her that was fine but I wanted a copy of the voided receipt. She said she would only void the order after the driver got back. I told her no way that the driver needed to bring me the copy of the void. I will never go here again. IT sucks! Oh yeah and then when the driver came to get the food it showed only part of the money refunded. They tried to "steal"over $20.00 from me. When I called back and asked for the receipt again she argued with me saying I didn't tell her about the other food.On top of that I had to have my 16 year old drive back up there to get a receipt for the refund because she refused to send it out to me. The food is great. The service is awful though. Took us 2 1/2 hours to eat a meal there -there's no one else in the place except a table of six and our table of six. Since we had a table 6 we had a 18% gratuity. We decided we were not going to pay it. So they decide to try to call the cops on us. We told them gratuity is not a law. They called management which took another 30 minutes or they were going to call the cops though. Finally they decided just to get us out of there. We've been going to Thai Flavors since shortly after they opened several years ago. The food is consistently very good and the staff friendly/welcoming. We ate there a few evenings ago and I think the food was the best we've had there. We also enjoy Cool Basil in Altoona although they are no longer under the same ownership. read more

I had green curry. Chicken was super tender, bamboo shoots are crunch. amazing textures and flavors. very velvety and coconuty. I also had thai tea. Their thai tea was super strong. Not a bad flavor but really punch you on your tongue I had to dilute a little with water. Overall pretty good. I experienced Thai Flavors 3 times in the last month trying to give it a try/chance. The first time I went with my boyfriend they charged us a dollar extra and didnt explain why before they did it and didnt take it off for that time, the next time I went they charged me and my sister a dollar over for rice then it was priced, I just went last night and their egg rolls were horrible they were not cook fully through and they were very doughy even after we asked them to put them in longer. I have tried to give them a chance but they are not all they care cracked up to be for over all service and experience. read more

Really so-so. I got the drunken noodle with pork, and it was just average. I got a 3 in terms of spice and wanted to get more, but our waitress really wasn't a help in decoding their scale. (Why is Iowa spice above Thai spice on the scale? In my experience Iowans don't make their food as spicy as we do in CA and Thai spice is really spicy. So that was confusing.) Passing through on business with a hankering for Thai (I know, you just have to have Thai food in Des Moines), and I picked Thai Flavors sort of blindly -- great choice! I can only speak for two dishes - the Angry Dish (with tofu) and a pristine side of steamed asparagus, unseasoned but with plenty of crunch. I ordered the Angry Dish "very, very hot" and got 4 stars and it was perfect, though I did add a smidge of chili sauce myself. I've had Thai food in many different places, including Bangkok, and this was an excellent sample for the US.I'll certainly be back. read more

This is my place for a curry fix- they do fantastic panang, yellow, green and specialty curries. My mouthwatering fave is the avocado curry, rich coconut milk based green curry with fresh veggies & fresh avocado slices. You can add meat, seafood or fried tofu but trust, you won't need it. Their green papaya salad is fantastic, fresh green papaya, onion, tomato and cucumbers in Thai vinaigrette and roasted cashews on top. My husband's favorite is the fisherman's delight. A great mix of fresh and frozen seafood with veggies in red curry. They've continued to add more sushi to the menu, we sampled a few rolls and found them ok but why mix Japanese and Thai. I think sticking to what you do best rather than trying to appeal to everyone who thinks Asian food is all lumped into one category. We were here last night, my husband hadn't had a good experience with Thai in the past but agreed to try it so my son, husband and granddaughter and I had dinner there. We had sushi, healthy rolls (my fav), eggrolls, crab rangoon and we each ordered an entree to share. The service was fantastic, our drinks were always filled, the food came out promptly and the presentation was really good. My husband lived everything, he isn't a huge sushi fan but did try it and he said he would be back very soon to eat. My son was also very impressed and liked everything I had ordered for us. The food is great, the best Thai we have had!! Unfortunately they have a cockroach problem. I had one on the wall (2 inches from my head) that we pointed out to the waitress. We ordered our food...should have left instead. After 2 bites, there was another cockroach on the table, beside my plate. Did it come out of my plate, I don't know. We left, completely disgusted. I am a first year med student and i live a few blocks away from Thai Flavors. It always takes them at least 1 hour to deliver the food and on one occasion they told my girlfriend that it would take 1 hour to deliver the food once again. BUT i waited almost 3 hours from 6 to 9pm. When my girlfriend tried calling them again several times, they said that the food is already delivered and even described what i looked like over the phone and what i said to them. That did not happen. They also said that i signed the receipt. That too did not happen. I was sitting right in front of the door the entire time because its a small apartment. THIS IS FRAUD. i called them and confronted them about it and they apologized and said the bill will be cancel and the next meal is free. When i called the next night they denied knowing anything i said. So i demanded to see the receipt that they SAID I SIGNED. I am a regular and have been ordering from here for months. They left me a message the next day telling me to call my bank and have teh bank call them. WTF. Thats not all the only reason why i even found the food was because i went downstairs to the mail box and saw my food just lying there. I dont know if they are stupid or what but i gave them the apartment number which they have been to plenty of times. In the bag i saw the food that could have been tampered with by just about everyone. The copy of the receipt claimed the promise time to be "2 Hrs" which is a lie. The name is spelled wrong and the phone number i gave them on many occasions before including this time is incorrect. I called the bank and they never voided my receipt as promised. THESE PPL ARE VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AS THEY CLAIM. I will never order here again.
