This is, by far, the best Thai restaurant I have been to. I came across this place via yelp searching for a decent restaurant en route to the coast. It is family owned and they are incredibly warm people. They care a lot about food quality and use a lot of freshly grown ingredients. Also, they understand Thai hot and have good taste in chilies. Please, even if you live far away- make this restaurant a point to eat here. This evening, I called on the way from Raleigh and they kept the restaurant opened for us! We were greeted with smiles as well as fried taro and pumpkin. Even if you go the "non-adventurous" route , their pad Thai will knock your socks off in flavor and remind you that "real" Pad Thai is popular for a reason. Located in a storefront downtown, Thai Garden serves authentic Thai food in a casual atmosphere. We had beef salad, larb and wonton soup to start. Our entrees included pad see ew, drunken noodle and panang curry. We like it spicy and these guys bring the heat. If you prefer mild, be sure to tell them. Service was good. The chef, a Thai lady who introduced herself as "Janet," came out to say hello and see how we liked her food. While I have called Wayne County home for better than twenty years now, my first meal at Thai Garden was just last week. My bride and I had lunch there and we were both pleased. We started of with the pork pot stickers which were incredible. I then moved on to the Lemongrass Soup with Shrimp, followed by the Thai Cashew Chicken (both medium spicy) which were both incredibly tasty and well prepared. The food here is wonderful. That has to be said. However I almost never choose to dine here since almost all of my experiences have a similar theme... A very long wait time. The first time my husband and I came, we waited 45 minutes for our food after ordering it. Halfway througg the wait time, they asked what our order was again, then ran back to the kitchen. Yikes. I looked over and noticed they had a B rating for cleanliness and balked. Hopefully that has since changed. Each time after we have waited similarly long times. We even joked to each other that maybe they went to the grocery store to get the ingredients, and then once we saw one of the cooks coming in with a food lion bag stuffed with produce during a long wait when we were the only people in the restaurant... We have even tried to outsmart the wait times (since the food is so good) by ordering take-out. This hasn't worked either, because three times in a row when we went to pick up the food (after waiting 45m already before leaving), they ask what we ordered, then we wait 30 more minutes while they cook it. What is going on?! I'm convinced they go to the store for ingredients after someone places an order. There seems to be no system for takeout orders, even though someone on the other line gamely listens while I place it, it seems like they must just hang up the phone and forget about it til you appear to pick it up. If the cleanliness rating goes up to an A, and if they could have a reasonable wait time and also remember to share my takeout orders with the kitchen, I would love to start patronizing this place on a regular basis. read more

I can't wait to go back again, and again, and again. Absolutely delicious food and extremely friendly service by the two sweetest old Thai couple you could ever imagine. I've had the pad-see-ew, tom-ka-ga soup, and even recently tried the black pepper and onion with chicken entree, all very good, and I want to continue trying other dishes there. The service can be a little slow when it's just the couple working, but they bend over backwards to make sure you like your food. This place is no exception to the intricately decorated Thai interior, as most of my memorable Thai food experiences have included. If you're lucky, the lady owner will even show some of it to you because of how proud she is of it. Probably eaten in at least 10 different Thai restaurants over the years, this is definitely one of the best. Especially to find a gem like this in Goldsboro. I get it that you have to wait long for the food and truly understand why others docked star/s because of it- but if you get to know the owners enough, which by the way are also the cooks, you'll understand the pride they take in preparing their meals. I want to dock a star from their score but they are definitely worth the 5 because of their hard work. It's awkwardly quiet at this restaurant on a Sunday. You can hear people chewing from the other side of the wall. The decor has this typical homey, Thai vibe, it's nice. Only if they had some music, this place would be hopping. I think the husband and wife are the only workers here, super nice! I've had the Thai Tea, Mu Tod, and chicken Panang here. Tried Thai Garden 2 more times and I had great service with really good food. Third time I ordered my dish the hottest that they offer and it was unreal.... too hot to eat and I pride myself on being able to eat really spicy dishes but this was the hottest I have ever eaten in a restaurant. The older woman that cooks the food offered to give me some extra rice noodles to add to the dish when I get home with additional sauces, that was really nice of her. This place is an absolute Gem. In my book, some of the best Thai food I have ever had, and I've been a Thai lover for 20+ years. Very authentic Thai cooked by the nicest Thai lady you will ever meet. Thai Garden blows away many big-city Thai restaurants ... the people of Goldsboro are very lucky to have a place like this. Everything we tried (Pad Thai, Pad See-Ew, Mango and Sticky Rice, and Thai Fried Rice) was delicious. Next time I want to try one of the curries ... the chef told us that the curries are all home-made (not from a can like many Thai restaurants). I think this is my favorite place in Goldsboro. The downtown area has really improved lately, but Thai Garden has been around long enough that I really hope it's not going anywhere. The only negative I've ever had there is that their beer/wine license had expired the last time I was in, so they weren't able to serve alcohol at the time. It wasn't a big deal. Anyway, I always get the same thing. I get drunken noodles and I get them Thai hot. I thought I could handle the spices and I always could until my last visit. I ordered what I always get and asked for Thai hot. My boyfriend ordered something - I can't remember what - and also got it Thai hot. Oh my goodness they have changed the way they spice these things up because it nearly killed us both. My lips would not stop burning. It was still delicious as always, but I'll stick with hot instead of Thai hot from now on. The waitress recommended some Thai tea to help with the heat and that was quite good and did help. My wife and I travel through Goldsboro, NC, once or twice a month on our way to and from our home near Wilmington, NC, to Virginia or the DC area. Typically, we will stop for lunch at one of the fast food chains along I 795/US 117 as we drive through Goldsboro. On this trip, we decided to venture away from our usual travel path and venture into town. Having parked our car along Center Street, we ran into a local who gave us some advice on the available eateries along Center Street (there are a handful). Being long-time fans of Thai food, we were particularly struck by his comment that Thai Garden had a fabulous chicken Pad Thai. My wife was nervous about eating there because the restaurant is kind of funky looking and there were no customers inside at 2 PM. However, I convinced her to give it a try and we were not disappointed in the least! We ordered the fresh veggie rolls and also received some complimentary fried rolls (delicious!). Cindy ordered the Chicken Pad Thai and I ordered a Stir Fried Vegetable Curry with Shrimp. The Pad Thai was awesome and was the very best that we have ever tasted throughout our extensive travels both CONUS and internationally! The curry was also excellent and Peter, the owner, explained that his wife, Janet, made the curry from a recipe taught to her by her mother. Both Peter and Janet are very friendly, as was their staff, and the service was courteous and prompt. From talking with the owners, we also found that we all had lived in the Washington, DC area for many years! If you want a pleasant surprise while on a road trip through this area, make sure that you stop in Goldsboro and, in particular, stop to eat at the Thai Garden. First off, the food here is terrific, best Thai I've hoad in Goldsboro. It tastes so much like this awesome Thai place I used to eat at when I was stationed in Korea, it brings back good memories. I recently went on a trip to Houston and ate at a Thai restaurant there, and although it wasn't bad, this place makes them look like amateurs. Secondly, the hospitality here is fantastic, and is nice to see in a town where the concept of customer service is dead or dying. I love walking into a restaurant where you are treated like family, and these folks make you feel at home. I know that the decor is a little quirky, but that's kind of cool in my book. I'm sure the more the restaurant increases in business, the more they will update those sort of things. I know some may look at my rating and think that it may be over embellished, but the restaurant never pretends to be something its not. If you want 3 star + dining, your probably in the wrong town. A gem in the area! I eat a decent amount of Thai during business travel and this will be a repeat stop. 630 on a Monday night I was seated right away. Ordered a Singhah beer, shrimp wonton soup, and pork Pad Kra Pow (D1). I couldn't believe that the bill was only $18 after tasting how fresh the meal was. The broth of the soup was spicy and fresh, not salty at all. Wontons were didn't have too much wrapper and contained a medium sized shrimp. Pad Kra Pow was served with some white rice. The broth was super spicy (ordered "Thai hot" heat level, you can choose), but also savory and flavorful enough that I consumed most with my rice. Pork was well cooked and the veggies retained a nice crunch. Family run joint, my server (Matt?) was courteous and friendly. It sounded like the owner had cooked all over the place before settling in Goldsboro, you could tell by the meal :) Reasonable prices, great good, small business- what's not to like? Came here with my mother and a friend and was more than pleased with the excellent food and service. We all ordered the Thai Lemonade which was cool and refreshing, with funny top hat ice cubes. I ordered the Drunken Noodles which were very flavorful and delicious. I would definitely recommend them. My friend ordered the Pad Thai and my mother ordered a shrimp dish. Both greatly enjoyed their dinners as well. The rather small restaurant is decorated in a rather unique way. Small totems, particularly chickens, are stacked in the corners and on shelves, while the walls are adorned with colorful pictures and testimonials by customers describing their experiences. The decoration provides a fun and eclectic atmosphere which I greatly enjoyed. The real treasure of the Thai Garden is its owners. They were very attentive and generous. The woman, who is the one and only chef, came and spoke to all tables about their dining experience and was always thrilled to see everyone was enjoying their stay. She even brought out an extra vegetable Pad Thai to our table for free because she wanted us to try it. She then went outside and picked a jasmine flower and some lime leaves for my mother. Their service was astounding and really set the eatery apart from others. If you love delicious Thai food with very fresh ingredients and friendly service, the Thai Garden is a must. read more

While traveling out of town, I coaxed two of my Southern-dwelling family members to try a Thai dinner with me. I ordered the "medium spicy" Fruity Curry option since I have not seen that on other Thai restaurant menus before and my relatives ordered much milder Ginger Chicken and the Chicken fried rice. As expected, the fruity curry was fragrant, fruity, flavorful and had just the right amount of peppery heat with mango and pineapple being the dominant fruits at play in the dish. I was told that the ginger chicken was good too with that special little "kick" that only ginger and/or garlic can give. I was told that the fried rice was a "little too greasy" for my family member's taste, but she was gracious about it. The oh-so-sweet owner/cook, "Janet" came over to our table several times to interact with us. We asked her about her move from VA to Goldsboro, NC and she shared some of her story about how she is a struggling small business owner trying to bring good Thai food to the area and encourage the locals, who are used to Southern American fare, to visit her place and try it. She even gave us a small complimentary dish to sample. I do hope that Goldsboro residents and visitors will patronize this "little resto that could"! Delicious and very reasonably priced! I got sweet and sour chicken with medium heat, my boyfriend got a pad noodle dish. Hot. We both loved our meals! Then the lady who cooked them came out to check on us, and brought us a dessert (on the house). I don't know what the name of the dessert was, but it had mango and rice over coconut milk and topped with sesame seeds. Amazing!
