Take 1: The first time I tried to go here, it didn't happen, because they locked their doors 15 minutes early, and then ignored us when we pulled on the door and waved. Oh well, their loss. I just wanted some to-go. Take 2: So, this place is good with a side of slow.... The service was a drag. The wait to get a table was not unreasonably long considering it was prime dinner time. I'm pretty sure there was only person serving that night, so understandably it got a little hectic and he got our drinks wrong twice. It took 20 minutes to grab our server's attention for anything. As for the food, my friend had Chow Mein and it was really boring. No flavor. Two others got the same plate, but one was *way* spicier than the other. I had a #30, the Thai name of it I don't remember, but I enjoyed it. Basically it was wide noodles, broccoli, pork, lots of red pepper, and a black sauce. Shared some fried ice cream for dessert. Oh man, sugary goodness. The price was right and portions are big, so I'll probably go back, Maybe I'll go in the middle of the afternoon when they aren't so busy, and combine my lunch and dinner into one really big plate of pad thai. read more

The food is good but the waiter was very unfriendly today. He threw our plates down on the table and had attitude, almost like we inconvenienced him. He also treated me like I was an idiot when I wanted to order something... "This isn't like Chinese food." I'm aware that I am in a Thai food restaurant, thanks... I'm from Austin going to school at Tech and I think this place can hold it's own with Austin Thai places. I had the green curry, which was tasty, and eggrolls. The medium was the perfect amount of spice for me and exactly the level I was expecting. It can be busy, so plan in advance when you want to go. I'm giving it 4 stars because I haven't been there enough and tried many things, but I did enjoy my experience. read more

The food here is quite flavorful and good to have once in a while. If you do eat out often, this place wouldn't be a good choice because the food has flared up spices and lots of oil, which wouldn't be healthy to eat too often. The portions of food are decent and worth the price. The Main reason I gave this place a low rating is because a different problem, not related to the food quality. The problem with this place is, that it is never open. The place is practically closed for a majority time of a month. This means, you cannot count on this place to be open, if you ever plan to go there. I just wished that the owners would either hire replacement staff or outsource the management to someone who could actually keep this place open. I no longer go here as I haven't caught this place open since October, I think, last year. read more

Pad Thai was so yummy! I ordered extra spicy & it was just right. Came right at lunch so it was a bit crammed. But the food was great!!

The food was amazing. We had the pork wontons, Nom Sod, Yellow Curry, Fried Rice and Kool Special. They were all fantastic! Authentic flavors instead of simply "Asian" as we so often see in this area. They were crazy busy at 1pm. The food presentation was not great - likely as a result of how busy they were. We also had a tough time getting our waitress to listen at all...it is hard to say if the service was typical but I would absolutely eat here again - just later in the day. read more

I freaking love Thai Pepper! Everything I've ever tried on the menu is great. It can get super crowded and cramped during lunch time, so it's best to come for an earlier lunch, or at dinner time. I've eaten at Thai Pepper since they opened about 20 years ago, but I gotta say, they really should hire friendly staff and open a larger space. I have nothing but great things to say about the food. The best and most flavorful Thai food around!! The problem is the staff. We had a table of 5 and found a 4 top that was dirty so we grabbed another chair, but that was all that was available by 1:30. One of the guys was going to come by and clean the table but told us that we had to sit on the opposite side of the short end of the table because it was a fire hazard. So we all sat down and we're talking about how excited we were about being together to eat. The cashier, with a line of people at her counter, came over and said "you can't sit there because it's a fire hazard." I told her that the other waiter told me to sit there. She said " well you can't." Not once being kind or polite and coming up with another option. Just turned around and went back to her line of people who were all watching the "show". I'm very disappointed in the staff and this lady's attitude with us. It'll be a long time before we go back, if ever after this. We were shocked at what we were served after seeing relatively good reviews. The food was not fresh and the taste was overshadowed by salt. The noodles were soggy and looked like it had prepare hours before. The worst part of the whole Deal was that you have to stand in line to pay for your meal after you've eaten instead of getting a bill at the table and paying. WONDERFUL! The pad thai was phenomenal. I can't help but order this again and again. I've also tried their delicious Thai Tea. Their chicken egg rolls are great; I highly recommend them. They're not your average egg roll, but perhaps I'm comparing them to the classic Americanized chinese egg rolls. These taste slightly like a samosa, which I love. Great prices! If I could give half stars, this would be a 3.5 STARS. Of the Thai places I've tried in Lubbock, this is the best of them, but only by a slight margin. Food is good for Lubbock standards. I go for the punang curry or pad thai. And I probably want to deduct a half star because of their poor service. Wait service isn't very friendly or on top of things. Often if you want a refill of your drink, you have to take it to the counter and ask them yourself. Otherwise, for the quality of the food at the price, this isn't such a bad place. Thai Pepper is easily the best asian place in Lubbock. The food is always good and the staff, while sometimes inattentive to the diner's needs, make up for it by what they serve. The Pad Thai, Kow Soy, and curry dishes are all fantastic. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

I had one of the most terrible experiences I have EVER had with this place. I placed an order to go and when I arrived home with it I had gotten two soups instead of one soup and a panang curry. I called and was assured that this was correct, but still felt unhappy. So I went back and and was told that yes, this was a mistake. So they remade my order of panang curry, but when I got home it happened again. The two containers looked, smelled and tasted EXACTLY the same! I called and spoke to the manager and was told that yes, this was the way their curries looked. Like a soup-y mess. Why in god's name would you pour thin soup made of milk, lime juice, curry powder, and chicken bits over rice? This is NOT curry! It's SOUP! And not even good soup! If I wanted soup I would order soup. The rest of our order was just as bad. The egg rolls were tasteless and mostly fried dough, the pork wontons were like eating rocks because they'd been fried too long, and the moo goo gai pan was a slimy, salty, watery hash. Also, it was clear that nothing in our meal was actually cooked on site. It was a nasty mix of canned foods. I ended up ordering a pizza. Will never go back and would NEVER recommend. read more

I'm a good cook, and there aren't too many places in Lubbock who cook better than me--yeah, I'm bragging, but it's true (and not hard in this town--I mean, this is a place that loves crappy chains, where it's rare to find goat cheese on a menu--it's a town for boring palates, salted for smokers). Thai Pepper is one of the places that beats me hands down. Their pad thai is great. Not too sweet. I think they have two chefs, though--the person who makes it wetter, less dry, is the better chef. The chicken egg rolls are amazing. Shouldn't even be called egg rolls, because they are nothing like the cabbagy, tasteless, greasy nightmares most egg rolls are. I often buy three orders and just eat them cold out of the fridge for the next 48 hours. I have never had anything there that wasn't tasty, and everyone I have brought has loved it. There's another Thai place in town that's good (Choochai), but their prices are higher and their portions are really small. I only go there when TP is closed or I'm really dying for this one coconut curry thing they make. Thai Pepper does have sticky tables and not enough seating, so you need to eat lunch at 11 or 1 or don't bother. But I like to pretend to myself that's part of its charm. read more

This is the best Thai food I have had anywhere!!! It is impossible to park or get a table most of the time so be prepared to wait for both!! Take out works as a good option, but often they are too busy to pick up the phone!. Service is pretty slow as well....but if you want killer Thai then sacrifice! read more

I tried 14 TIMES to call them this evening to get take-out and the line was either busy or if it rang, it rang and rang before the answering machine picked up. The waiter was pretty rude, but who knows he could have been having a bad day.. I order a mild dish and told him I didn't eat meat and it came out extremely spicy, so I told my waiter and he asked if I would like something else instead and I order a pad Thai and it came out with chicken and shrimp so I couldn't eat it. My husband enjoyed his first plate but he ordered spicy and it came out mild.. so he ordered another plate of the same food but more spicy, and it came out looking completely different and the chicken was not cooked. So we decided to just pay and leave. And the bill was way too much... The waiter added things to our bill that we didn't even order, then asked why we didn't make sure before we paid. Even though that should have been his responsibility to make sure not to lie on someone's bill. It was a pretty awful experience but the food was alright. read more

Been to this restaurant twice before and the food and Service was "OK", the place was cramped (much too small) so I was somewhat satisfied. This past January 17, 2009 at around 2pm I entered the restaurant (not too crowded this time lunch crowd had mostly left). I sat their for at least 10 minutes and not one employee approached me to inquire what I would like to order! It really was not busy at the time. I did not wish to make a scene so I got up and left... Have not returned since and probably will no longer patronize the establishment. read more

The food is terrific. No complaints. The pad thai is as good as any I've had. Minus two stars, though, for this very serious reason. They have a severe bottleneck in the form of one cash register where you have to stand in line to pay. it's extremely inefficient and can burn 25 minutes or more easily. Thai food lovers in Lubbock recognize this problem, all gripe about it, and though all love the food many avoid Thai Pepper like the plague. This is a terrible shame given the excellent quality of their food. TP would own the town if they somehow streamlined their operation. Having said all this, they do a big business (hospital next door). Maybe they don't care. If you're feeling intrepid, by all means go, burn the time, fight the crowd, you will enjoy the food. But, if this type of gross inefficiency irritates you as it does me and many, many others, go to another of the Thai restaurants in town. None hit the spot for me like TP, but most are good in their own way! read more
