I have to say this place was pretty impressive when it came to Thai style cooking and cuisine. It's a small restaurant and I would say it can sit about 35-30 patrons all at once. I would recommend reservations on busier nights. Let's get talking about the food! We started with the Tum Thard; an appetizer mixture of eggs, noodles, papaya salad, pork rinds, and pineapples. Based on the layout and flavors we knew we were in for a treat! I personally ordered their Spicy Basil with Tofu. I thought I was a big boy and went for a #4 spice level; I was not a big boy! Needless to say, the spicy garlic sauce stir-fried with the bamboo, onions, and bell peppers paired well with my tofu, but I wish it was tad bit more crispier. Moreover, my brother in law is Laotian so he was able to order stuff not on the menu or that I'm aware of. One of them was the pork intestine soup. I'm not a fan of innards, but I had to try the soup. Boy am I glad I did so cause it was sweet and aromatic of herbs. Minus the innards this would have been my pick for favorite bite of the night. Desserts ensured with sticky rice and mango along with fried bananas. Service all night was solid as patrons poured in. Imagine like a pad Thai, but one with the life sucked out of it. It slightly resembled it aesthetically, but a very pale version. Black and white. Which is coincidentally what it tasted like. I declare this to be my favorite Thai restaurant in the east valley for its customer service, food and affordability! My fiancé knows that I love Thai food. We were heading to Tum Nam Thai but when we pulled up, we remembered that we didn't have a good experience there. So I pulled Thai Plates up on Yelp and thought we'd give it a try! Bingo!! Most dishes were right under $10 even for dinner! I was a bit skeptical about it because when we walked it, it was quite empty. The server showed us our table and brought out the waters and menu. He gave us a couple of minutes to look at the menu and took our order. He quickly came back with a Thai tea. The food took less than 5 minutes to come out. That works for me! The thai tea was delicious ... a little sweet but still yummy! The pumpkin curry with beef (medium spiciness) was excellent. My fiancé got the mild yellow curry with chicken. Saturday lunch. This is a very clean strip mall restaurant with prompt service. The spring rolls were some of the best I've tasted, cool and crunchy with a good bit of shrimp. I ordered the spicy basil with chicken. The vegetables were fresh and crispy, the chicken plentiful and tender. The dish wasn't over-sauced, and obviously cooked fresh to order. The white rice was cooked perfectly. The best surprise was the spice. I've been to many Thai restaurants where the spice level is determined by how many red peppers the cook tosses on the plate after cooking. I ordered this dish "Thai hot", and it was correctly and accurately spiced as it was cooked, with a subtle but nice bite. The portion size isn't huge, but certainly adequate for the price. This is a sad version of Thai food. Chicken pad Thai had barely any chicken, gummy noodles, no taste with no other discernible ingredients. Sugar is not what you should be tasting in Thai food. Tom Yum soup was hot enough with ingredients that should be removed before serving. Very expensive for hot broth. Spicy Basil with green beans? You got me. First, excellent customer service! I ordered for pick up. It was ready in about 20 minutes. They even called me when my order was ready, which I appreciate. Ordered 2 lunch specials with medium hotness, 2 Thai teas that had just the right amount of sweetness and fresh spring rolls. Very yummy. The orange chicken had a nice breading on it with an additional orange chicken sauce coating. We will be trying 'spicy' next time as medium was not that spicy at all. Super flavorful though. Great little spot for Thai food, their peanut sauce is amazing! They have a wonderful sticky rice and custard dessert that is a must have so make sure to save room for dessert. My craving for Tom yum Kung has been happily fulfilled by this local place. When I see the Thai owner actively serving their customers and flawlessly handling the lunch rush I know I've found a good place. I also really enjoy that they give you the option of a smaller portion of Tom yum and not just a big size bowl like other restaurants do. The Tom yum Kung is wonderfully spicy, wonderfully brothy and fragrant and slightly sour with the lime. It's one of my favorite soups and it's healthy for you too! Just don't do what I did the first time and eat the galangal slice! This place does not water down the broth and adds a good chunk of veggies and shrimp. I also ordered the larb salad and it comes with cooked, heated ground chicken. This is mixed with mint, lime juice, onions and then topped with crunched up sesame seeds. Its served with shredded purple cabbage and carrots on the side. It's a basic meal but the flavors are just a punch in the mouth. It's really good. You can add rice to the soup or to the larb salad for extra cost to make the meal heavier but since i was aiming for a low carb lunch this was the perfect meal. After having eaten here a half dozen times I have found that the consistency and quality of the food is the best of any Thai restaurant in Mesa, Arizona. The balance of flavors, herbs and spices have been absolutely perfect. No particular tastes have been overwhelming , not even the meals with Curry. The chicken Satay is the best I have ever had. The Chef here knows how it is suppose to be made! I really enjoyed eating here! The gf and I are visiting/staying with one of our old time best friend for the week and she recommended this restaurant. We got here around 1pm on a Saturday and it was pretty packed. We did have to wait, but it wasn't long at all, maybe 5-10 mins max. He was so nice and very patient. I got a coke, the gf got Thai ice tea, and our bestie got the iced coffee. Thai ice tea was girlfriend approved so to you Thai tea lovers its legit! I tried both and they were great! Next time I visit ill make sure to take an ice coffee to-go. As for food we did order the crab puffs (6 pcs) for our appetizer and it tasted great especially with the sauce. Getting in to the main meals we all ordered something and shared which was enough for all three of us. I ordered the Panang curry with rice (Meat of choice I got Beef, green beans, carrots, bell peppers and coconut milk), the gf got Pad Thai (Fried rice noodles with shrimp, chicken, egg, bean sprouts, green onions, and peanut sauce), and the bestie got Cashew chicken (Chicken, onions, bell peppers, and cashew in a garlic sauce). Dropped by Thai Plates for a quick weekday lunch with a few colleagues and was not disappointed. This place looks small and unassuming but has some great food and service. In terms of food we all had a variety of dishes but I went with my favorite -- eggplant tofu. It came out piping hot and was a pretty good portion for the price. It does come with rice so you can easily make it into two meals if you want! I also grabbed a thai iced tea which was delicious and my friends had the thai iced coffee which they enjoyed as well. They have certain dishes at lower prices for their lunch specials, but you can order the regular items off of the menu as well. This place is always good. We had the orange chicken, pas si ew and Tom Yum soup. We were the only group sitting in the restaurant.. which is not an indicator of what to expect. There's a lot of senior citizens in the area and we went between dinner and supper. The restaurant is always clean and in good order. The food came quick, and was made exactly how we ordered. The orange chicken is always crisp and not overly sauced which can make it soggy. The pad see ew had flavor good but could've used a little bit more sauce. I was very excited to try this place as it has great reviews! I wish I could have had the same experience so many others stated to have but I did not. I only ordered fresh spring rolls and the service was very kind over the phone. Here is the issue, I asked if I could please get no cucumber in them, I was told no. This tells me they are not fresh, so I asked, I was correct. They were already made earlier in the day. Not so fresh :( I also asked for fish sauce instead of hoisin. I know Thai fish is waaaaay different than Vietnamese fish sauce and I am aware of this. I did thank the gentleman for his concern, so he finally reluctantly gave me fish sauce. I took a bite, the rice paper wrapper was tough since they were made earlier and then I had to pull the cucumber out thus making my rolls loose and messy. Inside was not great, there was a ton of shrimps but I will not go back for spring rolls. I usually like Thai spring rolls. My daughter had the orange chicken. It's similar to a family style serving and plenty for two to share. It came with a fluffy white jasmine rice. I had the #54 Yellow Curry Noodle with chicken. The chicken was thinly sliced and tender within the dish. The squash was the perfect consistency somewhat al dente & a better option ( in my opinion) than potato. Creamy coconut milk, Rich flavorful curry that I requested medium. "Do it" They will bring extra chili sauce to the table, so it was a perfect offering as you can add more heat if you wish! In speaking with our server Tommy, the family has 5 locations including - New Mexico & California ( In Hollywood). Each location is family owned & operated. Everything is made in house. Orange chicken is made from scratch. All the authentic dishes are also made fresh daily! My Curry was absolutely delicious! I left there completely satisfied with the portion sizes & price. We're originally from Seattle and have not had luck finding Asian cuisine that resembles that in Mesa. That was until we found Thai Plates! Always fresh ingredients and not pre-cooked. Unfortunately I won't be returning. I've been a patron for many years. Foods decent- not great. But close to my house so I frequent it. On a recent order I realized my dish was beyond spicy. I can handle heat but this was too much. I had ordered medium like I always do. So I called to discuss a refund the next time I come back. They refused. I was disappointed but it's their business and they can choose how they want to respond. I stayed calm and hungry! Choose to not let this impact my day and move on. Nothing I could do about it. But then........here's the weird part. They called me back! Not to reconsider, but to blame me. He argued that I ordered it hot. So now they are admitting it was made hot (which they initially denied). They were too caught up in the blame game to even realize they just did self incrimination. I'm done! I will never return. This is a small family owned and operated business, The restaurant is small with maybe six booths and maybe 6 small tables. The tables are a little high for the booth benches and they provide optional pillows for you to sit on. The better of the two meals we tried was the Pumpkin Curry with Chicken. They cooked the pumpkin and carrots absolutely perfect I don't see that too often. The sauce was mild and VERY thin. I don't think pumpkin was a part of the sauce. The chicken was on the dry side but not bad and still OK. I asked for brown rice with my meal but didn't receive any. Not a big deal and I used some white rice because we received a GIANT serving of white rice. Cucumber Salad was pristine fresh and crispy but was also very sweet. I did try a small amount of the Pad Gra Pow with Beef. The beef was a little chewy but not bad and tasted sort of like soy sauce. I didn't taste much basil in this dish and this dish is about the basil and should taste like basil. We also expected it to be spicy and asked very spicy but we received, "OLD WHITE PERSON FROM SUN CITY SPICY". For me not the best but also not the worst either and A-OK.
